Google Now has a Built-in Pedometer – Tracks Miles Walked and Biked From Each Month

Last night, and possibly because the month of October came to a close, Google Now started showing a new card to a number of our readers. That new card is a pedometer that has been tracking their steps and miles biked over the last couple of months, behind the scenes. I say “behind the scenes” because this is a card that we have yet to see or hear about. In fact, I took a quick look through Google Now settings and could not find this feature mentioned.

Pretty cool though, right? As you can see in one of the screenshots, it actually compared September to October and split up the activities depending on activity type. There is a mention under the results that reads “Based on your device’s location which is periodically sent to Google.” A Learn more link sits below it, but doesn’t provide any useful info.

Has your Google Now pedometer card showed up? Feel free to post ’em in the comments.

Cheers Zeas, NCSUgolfer01, cory, Stephen, Dale, Jose, Grady, Matthew, and Brian!

I just looked at my Google Now cards and it does show that card now. Very interesting. Although it says I biked 3 miles, even though I didn’t use my bike at all last month…lol

  • Its a cool feature, but boy howdy was it ever inaccurate.

  • Aaron Burroughs

This is both cool and creepy… I love hw ‘Google now is ever evolving though… really interesting in my book

  • Sirx

HA! I was JUST looking at this card like “What the hell? I didn’t ask them for this. But that’s kinda cool.” Thanks for the explanation!

  • Chris Pinola

I got 28 for October, but I don’t think that’s accurate. I walk at least 3 miles a day during the week while I’m at school…

  • Stoker

Google Now knows that you slept with your secretary after last year’s office Christmas party.

Soon it’ll be able to show you a card when she comes within 100 feet of you.

    • Random

I guess was a nice way for you to expose your secret.

    • I would pay good money for that app.

  • norgeloki

Mine said I had bike 10 miles when I had actually used the Endomondo Pro app to log mountain biking in October and had quite a bit more miles than that. It will be cool if there is increase integration of this info but it does kind of have the “Somebody’s Watching Me” vibe.

  • it showed up on mines this morning..i walked 5miles in october.

  • KreeTerry

7 miles walking and one mile cycling, which is weird because i never ride a bike lol. kinda of a cool feature.

  • Mine shows it, show’s 54 miles in Oct. 36 walking, 18 cycling, which I’m not sure is quite accurate since I bike to work 2 miles each day and bike at other times. Interesting that it tries at least to pick out cycling automagically.

  • Addison Todd

It must be if you have tracks enabled…

    • r0lct

This was my assumption as well except I don’t have it installed, but I did install at one time and maybe that authorization was all it needed going forward.

  • Nope. I would love to see that information, but no dice.

  • antwonw

Showed up on mine. Both Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Not showing accurate results. Like another guy in the comments, I too live on a college campus and walk all the time.

  • MikeSaver

I wish that Google Now could somehow figure out when I use certain transportation method. Like you can either set “Public Transit” or “Driving”. I often mix it up. I’ll usually take public transit in the morning to work but drive everywhere else. It’d be cool if I could set the “work” card to public transit.

I believe it’s just using the location history setting. You can have location data enabled, but if you turn off history, it won’t be able to track these metrics.

    • Andrew Merewitz

Where is the setting to enable google now to track your location?

      • drewbie_al

As far as I know, the only location history setting is in Maps -> Menu -> Settings -> Location Settings, under the Location History heading.

        • and prepare for horrible battery life 🙁

  • markgbe

    i love google.

  • Thomwithah

No great mysteries revealed in the “learn more” link; http://support.google.com/?hl=en&p=gqsb_locationhistory&version=210020112

  • ejtsang

Yeah just showed up this morning. Says I walked 44 miles in October!

  • Shows up on my phone, but isn’t terribly accurate. Says I walked 9 miles in Oct. which is maybe true. But it also says I biked 3 miles. I go mountain biking weekly. That number should be closer to 30 miles.

  • Showed up this morning. This is what “Learn more” leads to. I wonder how accurate it is. Regardless, kind of badass.

  • Asimoalex

Dose gps need to be on? I want this I have the new update and nothing just the weather always in my notifications…

  • Daniel Milton

Got it on mine today. Funny thing is when I run or walk for exersice i usually don’t take my phone with me. 15 miles in october. yeesh.

  • gpzbc

Weird. I updated Google Search but it is not there for me.

  • Alexa White

Mine popped up and said 2 miles in October. Pretty sure I’ve walked more than that, but if the service is new, it might not be getting all the data.

  • I’ve got it on my phone now. I like it, just wish it used the gyro or the acceleration sensor to actually count steps.

  • Corey Foltman

i also have a periodic history reporting card, no miles walked or biked yet though…a friend of mine plays basketball every wednesday; and that randomly added itself to his calender and pops up on a google now card.

  • abert78160

Showed up for me. 36 miles of walking in October.

  • Don

    It’s on mine today

  • MikeSaver

yeah but how does it know how many miles I was walking and not driving or biking or something.

  • Rob Putnam

Just checked mine and the pedometer was there. Strange, I haven’t ridden a bike in a few months. The walking may be accurate. Seems low though.

  • hfoster52

I use google now in the morning to plan my commute. I looked this morning and the pedometer showed up and was surprised (by how little I actually walked). Also showed me the flight information for my wife. Its like a one stop shop. I can’t imagine going back to a phone that doesn’t have it.

  • Ike Plemons

mine has shown up…. i saw this on a video the other day and wondered what it was… now i know.

  • T4rd

I thought this meant that it would show you how close you are to pedophiles XD.

  • strozykowski

Does this tie in at all with My Tracks? I use My Tracks when I go walking, and it would be nice if that accurate data (as I don’t have GPS enabled all the time) was factored in.

    • Turning the GPS off doesn’t really save battery when you are normally using your phone. The GPS is actually only enabled when you have a map app open. It’s a common misconception that leaving GPS on means it’s running all the time.

      • strozykowski

Oh, I realize that. I think it’s more a force of habit at this point.

  • shamu11

    does it count driving?

  • Nick

Nothing here yet but I did see someone on Reddit get it yesterday. Would the Great Google Outage affect it?

  • s3pt1k

I ride every day and have no card yet. ):

  • Dillon Brown

I got 37 miles walked for October? I do walk a lot but seems a little high.

  • Steen Kendle

Mine is saying I only walked 3 miles in October and 2 in September. The learn more page takes you to the Google help page. So how does figure out if I am walking, riding or driving? Pretty cool though. Will use this a lot.

  • I just saw it on mine. Said I walked 6 miles in September and 31 in October. The learn more link took me to a google support page that didn’t really tell me anything. I do a lot of walking during the work day so that seems pretty accurate perhaps.

  • Gaurav K

I got it the card, but its a bit weird that it says I walked 0 miles in October. I live on a college campus, and all I do is walk everywhere.

    • Bigwavedave25

Do you keep GPS services off all the time (for battery saving perhaps)?

      • Gaurav K

GPS is always on for me.

        • Bigwavedave25

Sorry dude. I have no clue, prob a checkbox some where…

          • Gaurav K

No worries. Thanks either way. I’ll see what happens next month. Maybe it didn’t collect enough information for some reason.

          • Michael

Do you only walk on campus or do you walk other places as well? It could possibly think 0 miles if you only stay on campus, as it may only use GPS to find the address and then measure distance between the addresses. In that case, my college campus would be all one address meaning no actual distance measured. Just a guess, but worth considering.

          • Gaurav K

Hmm… I’m pretty sure I went outside campus. I did go home for a weekend, and that’s no where near campus. You make a good point. Hopefully it’ll change for November.

        • Have you enabled location tracking/history?

          • Gaurav K

Yup. Its all on. I believe that has to be on to have Google Now working properly anyways.

  • Just showed up for me!

  • Lenesse Berg

I’ve started seeing a “Location History” card and it says, “You are periodically reporting and storing your location” and it has a link to learn more. I had a hunch that it might have something to do with the pedometer thing.

Google Now also randomly started showing me HPQ (where I work) Stock info after having a verbal conversation with my boss about stock, so now my phone eavesdrops on my conversations (I never searched or did anything on the computer/phone in regards to stock) so that was a little creepy, but I still think Google Now is AWESOME!

  • Yes……. And im lazy I guess lol

  • gbenj

‘Learn More’ leads to this page (http://support.google.com/?hl=en&p=gqsb_locationhistory&version=210020112) Not sure why though

  • The Learn more link just brings you to the general Google Support page. Not sure how to change these settings. But I like it!

  • I got this card today, but what was interesting is that it said I had cycled 3 miles even though I hadn’t actually cycled for the past month..

    • Br_d

Same here – 3 miles biked although I haven’t ridden a bike in over a month. How many miles does it say you’ve walked?

    • sygyzy

Guys, give it a break. This is a bonus feature they added in that takes advantage of the accelerometer. It’s not a dedicated app like Nike Run or Strava or Endomondo where *you tell it what activity you are doing* and the *start and end times*. It’s just guessing. Maybe tomorrow it’ll say you were running when OMIGOSH you were actually just jogging briskly.

      • sonicyoof

All he did was say it is “interesting”…

        • sygyzy

I had to reply to someone but I wasn’t attacking Nipam specifically. Look at all these other bozos on here that don’t understand how this app works. Br_d, Gaurav K, DanWazz, should I go on?

  • DanWazz

I noticed this when I booted my phone this morning. Kinda creepy. Also, I showed I rode 10 miles on a bike last month. I haven’t ridden a bike in like 5 years. Also, does running on a tread mill count for this?

    • Fattie McDoogles

I don’t think so. Not yet at least. It says “Based on your device’s location” which to me means its using GPS.

      • It’s actually all locations (network, wifi, etc.). Since I live in about a 3 or 4 mile radius (all walking) and never use wifi, My location is always the same, and Google thinks I have walked a grand total of 3 miles in October.

    • mtkregs

Maybe you drive really slow and it though you were on a bike because of that. 🙂

      • DanWazz

        Hahaha. Fair enough.

      • Justin Hunt

That’s what I’m wondering because I have a really dreadful commute

    • it counts by the speed I guess

    • Guest

      derp. wrong comment.

    • pholocity

someone else mentioned that it showed them riding a bike when in fact they rode a bus to work. probably has some speed parameters to determine things like that?

  • Slightly creepy

    • Abhisshack D

      why creepy !!!!!!!

      • ramesh

are yaar yeh bahar k logon ko har choti cheez ek intrusion of their privacy lagti hai…tu tension mat le

        • Abhisshack D

@e8c039e6af346533a31fc1a8facc9874:disqus Sehi hai yaar . bilkool sahi bola tumney 🙂

        • Jab desh me exploiting companies apna jaal bichaana shuru karengi, jab desh me tum log government agencies se bachke rahoge, jab desh me patriot act laagu hoga, tab tumhe samajh me aaega ki location tracking kitni gaand-faad cheez hai.
India me mujhe bhi aisa hi lagta tha, par yahan par kuch saal rehne ke baad privacy ki asli ehmiyat samajh aa rahi hai. Aur sach me ab dar lagta hai, ki companies kitna sab jaanti hain mere baare mein.

  • Marques Stewart

This is actually a new feature that was enabled with the update to the Google Search app on Monday. This was talked about when Google discussed the upgrades to Android 4.2

    • I didn’t have it, read this comment, updated, now I have it.

    • I agree. the card was not showing up on mine. I checked updates for my apps, updated google search, and there it was.

    • ProfessAndObey

I don’t have time to confirm right now, but I thought Matias spoke about this in the video from The Verge.
