Rumor Mentions Existence of Motorola RAZR X, Moto Nexus, and Key Lime Pie Update Schedule?

If you caught the first episode of The Droid Life Show last week, then you would have heard the first mention of a rumored Motorola phone called the RAZR X. We first dropped this name on the world in our show, and sure enough, it has appeared again today in a leak of what is being reported as an Android update timeline for Moto engineers. While this purported leak doesn’t talk specs or any of the goodies that we were told, it does bring up a couple of other things that may pique your interest. Before we dive into it though, take it lightly, as there is no proof whatsoever that this is real. Take this as nothing more than a conversation starter.

There is a mention of a Motorola Nexus. After that, the leak goes into potential time frames for Android 4.2.2 (“Key Lime Pie“) updates to rollout to a variety of devices. See, I told you this would be interesting.

First off, here is the leak that was posted over at Droid Forums:

Motorola Mobility Android Engineering

Below are the authorizations an unauthorized/pending of Motorola phones to receive android 4.2.2 (code name) Key Lime Pie

  • Droid RAZR X: Authorized Reason: Being shipped with 4.2.2
  • Motorola Nexus: Authorized Reason: Being shipped with 4.2.2
  • Droid RAZR i: Authorized Reason: Pushing 4.2.2 out between Q3 and Q4 2013
  • Droid RAZR HD/MAXX: Authorized Reason: Pushing out 4.2.2 between Q3 and Q4 2013
  • Droid RAZR M: Authorized Reason: pushing out 4.2.2 between early Q3 and Q4 2013
  • Droid RAZR MAXX: Authorized/Subject to change Reason: Support time frame may not support 4.2.2 estimated push date late Q2 2013
  • Droid 4: Authorized/Subject to change Reason: Support time frame may not support 4.2.2 estimated push date early Q3 2013
  • Droid RAZR: Pending Authorization Reason: Support time frame may not support 4.2.2 estimated push date mid Q2 2013
  • Droid Bionic Pending Authorization Reason: Support time frame may not support 4.2.2 estimated push date mid Q2 2013

The above documents have be reviewed and authorized/Pending authorization and are subject to change by VP product Management.

So if this is real (and there is no way to tell if it is), then the RAZR X that we were told about is potentially legit. But beyond that, how about a Motorola Nexus? About time, right?

After you get done drooling over those couple of thoughts, did this leak just confirm that Key Lime Pie is Android 4.2.2? That’s tough to tell. Because, again, we have no idea if this little pasted schedule is real or not.

If we were to assume that it is, this says that KLP will ship with the RAZR X and Moto Nexus (no dates given), but then will arrive via update to the RAZR HD and MAXX HD in Q3 and Q4 of 2013. What makes this whole situation confusing, is when it starts mentioning other phones like the old RAZRs and Bionic. It appears as if they are still deciding if these phones should receive the update or not, and will make that decision by Q2 or Q3 of next year.

So if any of that is true, then we are pretty sure that Android 4.2 is still Jelly Bean, but Key Lime Pie will come once it hits 4.2.2? Not sure that makes much sense. If it does arrive as KLP, then why is it going to take Motorola 6+ months to get their flagship devices updated to it? They are going to try to update the RAZR HD and MAXX HD to Jelly Bean by the end of the year, so if KLP is announced next week or shortly thereafter, is it really going to be until July or August before we see it? Keeping that in mind, does that mean that the RAZR X and Moto Nexus are going to arrive during the first part of 2013? Lots of questions with no definitive answers from a pasted schedule that we aren’t sure is believable.

And…your thoughts?

Update:  After talking with a couple well-placed friends, we are finding this schedule less and less legit. Not that we were even 20% convinced to begin with, but again, take it lightly. It’s a conversation starter and probably not much more. Also, removed “confirmed” from the title – not sure why I used it, but it was a poor, poor choice of words.

*I probably don’t need to mention this for the 10th time, but we have no idea if this is real, which is why it has been flagged as “rumor.”

  • MicroNix

I thought Motorola was going to slow down the release pace in 2012? Will they ever have a flagship phone for more than 3 months?

  • Bionic

Motorola nexus will be happening first half of 2013. Bet on it.

  • Brad Tarpley

I was at the Big Android BBQ this last weekend and Motorola was there along with a regional manager for Texas. He said that a lot of people had inquired about a Moto Nexus, but couldn’t comment on any existence of such device. He did seem odd about the subject and quickly changed it to talking about the RAZR M (which is a fantastic device). But I suspect that he knew something…

  • speraider430

Why do people care that google is releasing updates so quickly. I am hoping that this quick update cycle forces manufacturers to create unskinned devices to keep pace with the OS releases. Another option is this could push people towards nexus devices. I know the average user doesn’t know too much about what version of android their phone is running, but at the very least they will feel crappy buying a phone that ships with ICS when JB is already released.

  • Joesred

The moment you open the box of your NEW up to date….phone….before you have time to plug it in to charge it…..you new phone is soooooo yesterday’s news!!!

    • wickets

Not if you have a nexus

  • Justin Swanson

Sorry if this is a repost. Why would Android 4.2.2 be called KLP and not 4.2? Are they assuming a second push of KLP by the time these devices ship? (i.e. 4.2.1 comes next weekish, 4.2.2 comes in Q1 of 2013?)

  • http://twitter.com/sspediacci Sean Spediacci

On Facebook it says “Rumor Confirms Existence”. You got me there

  • SeanBello

I don’t take any credence in this. the Bionic is JUST getting ICS. no way they’ll ever see 4.2.2 especially with the Atrix not seeing ICS

  • Jcopernicus

Point releases don’t get decided until the last minute.

    Relax fellas.

  • http://twitter.com/tfleming223 Tom Fleming

Personally, when rumors like this come, I am a big believer of the theory that if one part of it is blatantly wrong then the rest of the rumor is just as blatantly wrong as well. Let’s think about this logically. The Bionic/Droid 4/RAZR have not seen even a Jelly Bean update yet nor has one even been leaked/discussed as a leak yet. Not saying any of those aren’t going to get it, but come on. The typical device lifespan for any Android phone is to receive 1 major update from release version. If these get two, pushing them to 4.1 that is HUGE, but believing they will get a third…and get a third when they are 18 months or more old? Not happening people. Based purely on that, I put all of this in the bunk pile.

  • Aaron

This must be true. There is no mention, and thus no intention, of updating any Motorola phone that is not on Verizon. So Photon Q, Atrix HD, and Electrify 2 customers prepare to be left out in the cold. Just how Motorola likes it.

  • BrianLipp

damn you kellex, getting my hopes up for a moto nexus again

  • http://www.facebook.com/robstunner Rob Wisz

If the RAZR x is shipping with 4.2.2 and the RAZR HD is getting the upgrade between q3 and q4 2013 then I would assume the x wouldn’t even come out till April or May of next year. Just imho

  • paul_cus

I don’t think we’re going to see a Nexus made by Motorola for at least another year.

  • http://twitter.com/umiwonder CODEMAN

I doubt the Droid Bionic will even see Jelly Bean let alone Key Lime Pie….

    • http://www.facebook.com/aarontrevor Aaron Sentell

Motorola already confirmed JB for the Bionic. Don’t spread FUD. This is coming from a GSIII user.

    • Bionic

Don’t talk about crap you obviously know nothing about.

  • Tarak

Maybe the potential 4.2.2 leak is due to the Android PDK that Google told us about at IO.

  • lovehate

droid razr to get updated before razr hd I dont see that happaning

    • arthur2142

I agree with you. Even with the “pending authorization” tag, why would it get KLP 3-6 months before the Razr HD?

Droid RAZR HD/MAXX: Authorized Reason: Pushing out 4.2.2 between Q3 and Q4 2013

Droid RAZR: Pending Authorization Reason: Support time frame may not support 4.2.2 estimated push date mid Q2 2013

  • zmberven

    Wait a minute. RAZR X. X=10. 10=10in?

A Moto Tablet under the RAZR name?

    Sounds like a good idea.

  • fanboy1974

I wonder if those Razr HD buyers are waiting to jump off a building. Oh wait, what Razr HD buyers?

    • Bionic

      Uhhh really? I know plenty.

  • aye_winchell

maybe the motorola nexus is a nexus tablet? and the razr X a nexus phone? maybe otherwise i agree the naming seems off.

    • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

I doubt the RAZR X is a Nexus phone. The RAZR brand is pretty exclusive to Verizon at this point. I think Moto should make RAZR their product like in following the Galaxy and One line ups, but right now RAZR is tied to VZW.

      • aye_winchell

true, but the nexus 4 is pretty not exclusive to verizon, so this could be an attempt to get a nexus phone on verizon and why wouldn’t moto want to tie there most famous brand to googles most famous brand, i get what your saying though.

        • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

It’s more that I think Verizon won’t allow them to merge the two. Moto would likely already have used the Razr name on non-Verizon phones otherwise.

  • nightscout13

    RAZR X? I’m balls deep.

  • http://gplus.to/bdbplatano M. Puente

With all the people bitching about the Nexus 4, it would be enlightening to see the Nexus line have another (phone) addition to the lineup. I see nothing wrong with the LG Nexus, but I have to admit that offering more than one Nexus phone would be the hotness

  • Jigga_Z

I’m both excited and concerned about the ecosystem at the same time, on top of being very skeptical.

As far as excited goes, I’m impressed to see Motorola committing to devices, especially the Bionic. The idea of a Motorola Nexus is fabulous of course, but I wonder if that Droid Razr X is the locked Verizon version of the Motorola Nexus since both launch with 4.2.2, whatever that may be.

I’m concerned about the Android ecosystem because if Key Lime Pie really is announced, most phones will be drastically behind in updating. Granted, this month has been very good for Verizon in terms of ICS, but to be two major versions behind really concerns me. Not to say that I want to hold off on innovation just because carriers and OEMs are slow with updates, but on principle, I’d like devices to be more up to date as a whole.

    • Stevedub40

My thoughts exactly on the X vs. the Nexus

      • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

Same here, as RAZR is pretty exclusive to Verizon at this point and so was the X (ie Droid X), it’s a safe bet that RAZR=Nexus but bloated and locked down for VZW. If this rumor is true at all.

      • CopierITGuy

You are most likely correct. The RAZR X will be VZW’s version of the Moto Nexus. They will not release the Nexus on VZW. It will only be the locked-down, bloated, blurred device

    • chris125

I agree. I am all for updates but what happened to Google doing 1 update a year like they said? If this is the case they are already on 2 for this year( we assume with the upcoming event next week) It already takes long enough to get updates and unless this can fix that which I highly doubt it is just another update most will never see.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Google announcing Jelly Bean in the summer made this whole thing seem so much worse. Because now, during the winter when they release hardware, we are thinking we may see another new release.

      • cooksta32676

Exactly. So how many retail phones have even shipped with JB?

    • cooksta32676

Has there even been a single phone shipped with JB yet?

      • chris125

        Note 2

  • MafiaMM

DROID RAZR ULTRA X HD is the one I’m waiting for

  • chris125

Why is it referred to as motorola nexus yet none of the others include moto in the document? I have an upgrade in june so by that time we will see what is out.

  • Stevedub40

In my heart I want to believe that 4.2 will not be KLP, simply because of all the flak that Google has received for fragmentation, thus further adding to it. To name 4.2.2 KLP still doesn’t make sense, as this is a minor revision.

Could it be possible that the RAZR X and the MotoNexus are going to be similar devices released on different carriers? Maybe Verizon to get the X and everyone else get the Nexus?

Lastly, I hate to be the grammar police, but I think it is “piqued” :P

    • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

Why would you want the RAZR X over the Nexus, unless of course you’re not on VZW? Likely, RAZR X will be the bastard child of the Moto Nexus all locked up and bloated with Verizon garbage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angel-Luis-Gonzalez-III/591224353 Angel Luis Gonzalez III

I’ll wait for Motorola Droid Razr Nexus Maxx HD Pro 4G LTE

    • Verizon

I’ll wait for you to realize that joke is old.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angel-Luis-Gonzalez-III/591224353 Angel Luis Gonzalez III

sounding like at&t there :P “that was so 47 seconds ago”

  • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

Doesn’t seem very logical. Why would Motorola project to have KLP pushed to their most recent phones after being pushed to the Bionic or original RAZR?

  • Swoops212

Sounds fake, too many mistakes in legistics. With that said I still want the nexus part to be true

  • Naga Appani

    Thunderstruck

  • Trevor

I declare shenanigans. But I would love love LOVE to get my hands on a Motorola Nexus.

  • TruEastSydeBoi

Upgraded/dated specs of the Razr HD with the same max battery would be nice (ie: Ram, Camera. Quad Core). Then Nexus to top it off.

  • Silver Veloz

Wouldn’t that be something if they extended the updates for KLP to Droid Bionic. Talk about a phone with many lives.

  • leonard daniels

I believe the razr x is the international version of the razr hd with intel chip

  • vx117

This seems unlikely or too good to be true. I don’t think Motorola is gonna release a Nexus until around this time next year. Google and Motorola still have a lot of work to do with each other before something big like this can happen.

    • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

The rumor doesn’t really say anything about releasing a Nexus anytime soon.

    • aye_winchell

i do think your right, but goog and asus got the 7 from concept to production in like 4 months, but again i think your right.

      • r0lct

But that “concept” was a product Asus already had basically completed and just needed to be revised.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jeremy.turnley Jeremy Turnley

If the rumors are true, any company can release a Nexus any time they want once KLP is out – all they have to do is follow the guidelines and get Google to approve the device. If that’s the case, doesn’t have to be a full year before Moto puts one out.

  • Daniel

has moto ever shippped with the lastest version of android?

    • Stephen Zipprich

The OG was the latest iteration at it’s release I think.

    • MikeD675

      Yes, the OG Droid did.

    • jak_341

      Lol. Doubtful.

    • Tim Hardeman

Xoom and Droid (Milestone) come to mind.

    • Diablo81588

The Bionic shipped with GB, which was the latest version at the time. It came out on September 15, and ICS was announced October 19th. The Droid 3 was also on GB, and was released July 14th of 2011.

  • jak_341

I hope next week is KLP! That would be great. My GNex NEEDS Key Lime Pie! As for Moto, this screams two words;death bed. Way too many lackluster devices.

  • Liquidretro

Looks like I might be waiting for that upgrade a little bit longer! Now lets hope moto puts a good camera in the RX or Nexus.

    • Abgar Musayelyan

      RX – i like that..
Like mazda’s Rotary eXperimental line of badass cars that have been released over the years.

  • SubMatrix

just fyi kellex the correct word is pique :P

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Uhhh whoops. :P

  • Q’s

Why wasn’t the Motorola Nexus bolded? Unless the Razor X is the Moto Nexus?

  • Mark Duenas

Reserve a Moto Nexus for me.

  • Tommy Thompson

0.0.2 update for Android wouldn’t equal a new name. It doesn’t make sense.

    • DroidzFX

It doesn’t make sense but I would say Google can rename their version numbers however they see fit.

      • NexusPhan69

I was thinking maybe Moto has internally referred to 4.2 as KLP and that’s not necessarily correct.

      • evcon

I don’t see why you’re getting downvoted. That’s a completely true statement. Look at Apple with their 6th iPhone being the iPhone 5.

        • DroidzFX

People always looking for the norm but don’t contemplate all possibilities.

    • http://twitter.com/kashtrey Trey W

Could be that 4.2 is the named update but Motorola is working on a specific build of 4.2. Google may simply market KLP as 4.2 but really ship it to manufacturers as 4.2.2 or something like that.

      • Tommy Thompson

That would make more sense than a small 0.0.2 update being a brand new OS. I always thought the last number in the version when there are three was just bug fixes.

      • michael arazan

the time table would fall in line with a newer os by june/july next year for a new nexus and 4.2.x

    • EC8CH

      chewbacca lives on endor

      it doesn’t make sense!

      • http://www.facebook.com/smartguy0101 Anthony James

I know where this comes from but it has always bothered me, I’m pretty sure Wookiees are from Kashyyyk.

        • EC8CH

Exactly… Wokkiees are from Kashyyk, but Chewbacca chooses to live on Endor with a bunch of 2 foot Ewoks???

          IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!

          • http://www.facebook.com/smartguy0101 Anthony James

Yes, but to get pulled further into nonsense, Chewbacca doesn’t live on Endor, he was just there for Episode VI.

          • EC8CH

What you need to ask yourself is why are we discussing Wookies and Endor on an Android Blog. Does that make sense? No… it doesn’t make any sense.

          • http://www.facebook.com/smartguy0101 Anthony James

I thought we were talking about Wookiees and Kashyyyk.

  • Michael_NM

I’ll wait for the Droid Razor X Bionic Maxx HD.

    • DroidzFX

with headset jack on the side…….boom.

      • cooksta32676

        And screen on the rear.

    • Symbiotx

What about the Droid Razor X Maxx HD dlx J Butterfly DNA Nexus??

      • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

        No. Stop.

        • MicroNix

          Why stop? Motorola hasn’t!

      • SEAN GT

        HAHAHA, Termidroidtor

      • LiterofCola

        How original!

        • Symbiotx

          Like your screen name?..

      • Abgar Musayelyan

i dont know about all that, but Droid RAZR X MAXX HD LTE sounds like a real device to me.

  • Chris Pinola

i’m gunna preface this by saying I’m well aware that this a rumor, but why would they refer to their device internally as “Motorola Nexus”?

    • teleclimber

That jumped out at me too. To me that pegs it as fake.

    • bratliff

Cause all those new Google people would be confused if they didn’t. Hah

    • http://www.DavidPat.com David Pat

Unlocked Nexus sold in Play store. Probably how they are going to try to get the Tmobile and Sprint customers.

      • michael arazan

Hopefully if there is one, an lte one for verizon will be in the play store too, that way it’ll be $200 cheaper than verizon’s full price.

  • Guest

    What happen to less phones?

    • r0lct

      More is the new less

  • Mark Duenas

    1 Moto Nexus please!

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

I don’t believe this rumor one bit. Too many crazy pieces of information that don’t make sense. Why would Key Lime Pie be 4.2.2? Never has a newly named Android OS included a third digit, it’s usually two (like 2.3, 4.0, 4.1, etc), only subsequent updates get a third number. And a Motorola Razr X just sounds…pointless. The only one that I can see being true is the Motorola Nexus considering they’re a part of Google now, but anyone can make an educated guess about that eventually happening.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I’m sort of with ya. But then again, what if 4.2 is Key Lime Pie, and they are just expecting 4.2.2 to be out by then? I dunno, a lot of questions which is why it’s just a giant rumor.

      • arthur2142

Why would 4.2 still be Jelly Bean? If it’s that major of an update, why wouldn’t they just name it 4.1.5 or something, that way 4.2.0 could be KLP?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angel-Luis-Gonzalez-III/591224353 Angel Luis Gonzalez III

I doubt they are making another razr until 2013 Q4. Google bought out motorola mobility and changed them up a bit, cut 2000 employees and said they are going to keep release of phones down to a minimum because its outrageous, and KLP rumor before even pushing JB out to any motorola phone, okay bs. If anything maybe just maybe a MotoNexus will be in the works but no more razrs until end of next year

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Only thing about this 4.2.x is most likely Jelly Bean again, so…no idea where KLP came from.

But a Moto Nexus would be amazing.

  • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

yep. I’ll take that Motorola Nexus, but will Verizon support it ?

    • Nicholassss

Only if it says “deroid” everyone someone gets a text message.

  • NexusPhan69

    You just made my day!
