HTC DLX to Launch as the HTC DROID DNA for $199 in Mid-November?

According to Verizon’s most recent MAP (minimum advertised price) list, the HTC DLX (the 5″ 1080p phone) may launch as the HTC DROID DNA around November 20. We are under the impression that this is the same phone because of the model number HTC6435LVW, a number that we first reported months ago along with the codename “dlx.”

What’s even more interesting than the name, is the price that Big Red has listed. How does $199 on 2-year contract sound for a device with an industry leading 1080p display? The DROID DNA should also sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 16GB of internal storage, 2GB RAM, 8MP camera, and run Jelly Bean. By all means, this is one of the most high-end devices we have seen in some time, and is at a level that Verizon usually attaches to a premium $299 price.

The first photos of this device appeared over the weekend, showing one of the sexier Android devices of the last year. A November release matches up to what our sources have been whispering into our inbox over the last few weeks.

On a related note, the Galaxy Note 2 is appearing on this list as well, with a $299 price tag and a potential launch of, today. We know that it isn’t launching today, but our sources mentioned yesterday that the device could go up for pre-order as early as tomorrow.

Thoughts on the name? “DROID DNA.”

  • Will

If october 24th is the preorder date for the Galaxy Note 2, then will we only be able to preorder the DNA on the 20th? Not sure if I can wait until december for a new phone…

  • Daistaar

Could we now call this an “edge-to-edge display” as well?

  • calvin35

If the charged 299 for this phone most would get the note 2. Right now HTC can’t compete with Samsung at the same price point.

  • Spider210

Its droid DNA by HTC htc64353pksp and blue black purple covers already available in accessories

  • Stew

DROID Incredible X would be a much better name than DNA… like where does DNA tie into DROID branding. Verizon has been using robots and weapons and such for the DROID campaign. Now they’re trying to use DNA as a name… Doesn’t make much sense to me… Awful name…

DROID Incredible X flows better and connects better with the name already established by the DROID brand and the Incredible line of phones.

  • bikerbill12

    I want it now.

  • geedee82

I am honestly getting sick of this whole DROID marketing campaign thing. (Please don’t bash me) It has just become so corny. The original DROID was awesome, but I wish they would just let it die already…unless they’re gonna bring back stock android phones with unlocked bootloaders…

  • bigillz

Whoever first started attributing “sexy” to electronics should be put down. I’m pretty sure it started with Apple stuff, and really needs to end. The curves and lines of exotic cars and boats can get away with it; not a simple black chunk of electronics.

  • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

    Off contract price please?

    • LionStone

      Hopefully it’s $599.99…the Inc4 is $499.99

  • cooksta32676

So face unlock is now strand unlock.

  • ddevito

    Dear Droid DNA,

    Your name makes me laugh

    Sincerely yours,
    XYBOARD

  • Yep

As someone who’s going the full-price route from here on out to preserve unlimited data, I gotta say, I’m really irked that every phone coming down the pike seems to be limited in some way.

DNA: no expandable memory nor battery
Note II: seems to be getting less than stellar reviews (with BGR’s being the worst) due to flimsy build quality
    LGNex4: is a joke w/o LTE.

I realize I’m probably in the minority as far as buying full-price from here on out, but damn…

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I don’t think the DNA is confirmed to have no expandable storage but it would be a BIG bummer for me! I’m in the same boat with unlimited data and having to pay full price for new devices and it seems Verizon is trying to stick it to us by releasing devices with a few quirks but offering them to subsidized users for $200 but making us pay $600+!

  • Tyler Casilio

There’s no way thats the name………

  • Tyler Casilio

My thoughts on my next phones name? D.o N.ot A.sk

  • Ibrick

    Happy Thanksgiving to me!
And I agree, the only reasoning I can see this beast being $199, is pushing the DROID brand over Samsung, and the cheaper the phone, the more likely people are going to be to sign over their soul in the form of shared data.
On that Note 2, wonder what the unsubsidized price is? $599 maybe?

    • LionStone

That’s what I’m thinking, hopefully no more than $599.

  • Ohiwastedmylife

Truly the first phone to require DNA samples in order to provide you with more relevant Google advertisements. I LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING

  • PhillipCun

HTC needs to do better branding. Who wants a phone called DNA?

Their phones are FUGLY compared to the competition. They have a unique look that worked 2-3 years ago but now it just looks like every other Android phone.

Step it up HTC or you’re going to continue to suffer.

  • hkklife

With the usual Sense bloat, an undersized fixed battery and no expandable storage, $199 is all it’s worth. Actually, it may not even be worth that. With that many pixels to push around, we may be looking at terrible battery life reminiscent of the Thunderbolt era. Love that CPU and RAM, however. And 5″ is probably the perfect phablet screen size IMO.

  • Bewara2009

Hahahahah that name is a joke.. ok enough is enough Verizon we can see all your DNA all over that phone.. :D

  • http://twitter.com/jdrch jdrch

The specs + price combo = HTC is really going after the jugular vs. Samsung with this phone. Unfortunately, HTC doesn’t have the same pan-carrier release strategy as Samsung, and until they have that nailed down they’ll always be playing catch up.

  • http://twitter.com/worseisyet2come Jason

Look at those specs. Ugh… I just got Droid DNA all over the place.

  • KB Smoka

I’ll leave my DNA all over the screen from watching 5inch PornHub in 1080p.

  • coolsilver

Sorry HTC. My Thunderbolt tells me I have burned enough.

    • JoshGroff

Charge, Bionic, Revolution… One bad phone does not a bad company make.

      • coolsilver

My XV6800, Touch Pro 2 and Thunderbolt all have had terrible battery life. Updates that take forever to come. Nice phones overall but I can’t overlook the battery life or the constant management failures.

      • trob6969

Yeah, I bought my rezound when it first came out and still think its top-notch.

        • Kevin McDole

          Agree!

  • Temp

Notice that subsidized prices on phones through Verison have dropped $50 – $100 from their typical price points? Notice that these new price points were established when the option of renewing a contract with unlimited data was taken away, starting with the Galaxy S3?

  • jldleo

Give me the Note 2 over this Rezound 2..

  • EC8CH

Low price brought to you by a butt load of Verizon bloatware.

    • Daistaar

You can freeze and disable bloat starting from ICS up.

  • CopierITGuy

I can see the commercial now…

    Some average Joe giving blood…
Mad scientist inserts blood sample into HUGE supercomputer…
Cheesy Droid-esque robotics morphing into human form in painful anguish…
Voiceover: “The new HTC Droid DNA. Your next phone, because it was made for you – from you.”
    ~cue evil laughter~
Then, of course, cue the “Drooooooid”

  • Symbiotx

I don’t know why everyone is crying about the name. I don’t think it’s bad, better than butterfly or dix. Who cares what they call it, this could be a great phone.

  • http://twitter.com/whatisajimmy ok

    rip razr hd

    • HTC1

No way!!!! Until these phones have the batt life of the HD I won’t buy one. Especially one that has Capacitive buttons. HD lives on for now. Best thing i’ve ever downgraded to recently…….Don’t even have a desire for anything new (and I buy EVERY new, good phone that comes out). Don’t know how i survived without this batt life. this is how it should be!!

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

After the Droid Razr I have a sour taste for Motorola and even though all the reviews of the Droid Razr HD are promising I just can’t get over the horrible experiences I have had with my Razr (constantly freezes, locks up and it always drops 4G LTE until I turn airplane mode on/ off).

“I got Droid DNA in the palm of my hand.”
    Riiight.

Ewwww. Maybe it should be the HTC Droid Seed

  • http://www.matthewdlyons.com/ matthewdlyons

For for the love of all things Android…HTC Droid DNA????

  • zepfloyd

Notice there is no LG Nexus on the list…

    • jnt

You won’t see the LG Nexus on any cdma carriers any time soon, if ever. Heck you might not see any more Nexus devices on them.

      • Stew

Which won’t be a problem in a little over a year when Verizon is all LTE or almost all LTE

    • https://plus.google.com/110773438514346746273/ tjhrulz

damn you, if Verizon does not get it I am blaming it on you now, even if the chances before were none.

    • http://www.facebook.com/cindy.leavell.3 Cindy Leavell

      or a nexus period ….

  • Xeneize480

FK!! Why is VZ customers always unhappy with something? If the name, if the price, if the color, if the size, if the screen, if you are a fkn idiot that can’t afford to buy it.

    • TheDrunkenClam

I’m upset with it running a stupid manufacturer skin (sense) and most likely having a locked boot loader.

      • JoshGroff

HTC is usually good about unlocking their bootloaders, it’s s-off that’s usually a hassle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Terrence-Tequilashots-Adams/736413489 Terrence Tequilashots Adams

I dont care what the name is… I will give my money regardless

  • http://twitter.com/doubleOHdevn Dev’n★Ryan

Uhm. On a side note… Where is the Spectrum 2?

  • Jigga_Z

Not a fan of the name, but that wouldn’t stop me from getting it if it turns out to be as good as it sounds. We’ll see what comes down the pipe in the coming weeks!

  • htowngtr

Too bad there won’t be a dev edition….

    • Butters619

If it’s anything like other locked HTC bootloaders, once you get root you can spoof your CID and unlock the bootloader.

      • TheDrunkenClam

Even though the bootloader is unlocked does not necessarily mean you’ll be able to flash the latest, bone stock version of android on it. Just look at the Thunderbolt. Completely unlocked boot loader, yet the best you can get is an ICS ROM. Does the galaxy s3 on Verizon have any stock jellybean ROMs yet?

        • Butters619

It has CM10, AOKP, and a pretty big handful of others.

And the only benefit to a dev version is that it is unlocked, but if the phone is unlockable that doesn’t matter. Not sure where your point was going.

          • TheDrunkenClam

In regards to the Galaxy S3, I was genuinely asking a question, not trying to make a point with that. That comes as great news to me that there are JB roms on the GS3.
In regards to the Thunderbolt, my point with that is that even with S-off and Bootloader unlocked, devs still struggle with getting a Jellybean rom functioning, due to complications with the radios. Back in the day when there was only 3G, when google released new software, it could usually be easily ported to a device with an unlocked bootloader. Now, even with bootloader unlocked, it’s not always easy to get it to work if you don’t have matching RIL to play nice with it.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

  • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

thats a pretty awful name for sure.

  • BrianLipp

The real question is, will this be another Rezound situation? They release the DLX now, then at MWC they announce a new line of phones (maybe 2nd round of One series) that have upgraded internals (A15) and newer software (the DLX wont get the version coming next week for months, probably). Cause the Rezound looked good when it was announced and then was destroyed a few months later, and Verizon didnt get any of those phones.

    • brando56894

Yea that kind of sucked. I looked at the model number of this (HTC6435LVW) and my Rezound (ADR6425LVW) and this one looks to be an upgrade to the Rezound. This is my second HTC device (first was the Incredible) and I don’t think I’ll be getting another HTC phone anytime soon. The Rezound kind of sucks quality control wise.

      • KB Smoka

        Incredible > Everything else

        • Ohiwastedmylife

still using my OG Incredible. Runs 4.04 just fine.

          • cherry919

What 4.04 ROM are you using for your Inc?

          • Ohiwastedmylife

I forgot I switched ROMs but ATM I am rocking CM9 unofficial

        • brando56894

In terms of overall quality hell yea, in terms of pure tech specs the Rezound wins.

          • KB Smoka

Uhh….of course, it came out 2 years later

    • zepfloyd

I don’t think you’re going to do much better than the quad core S4 Pro for a while, coupled with a 1080p display how much more future proofing do you really need?

    • AlexKCMO

Burned from HTC after the Rezound, and burned by the starving dev community.

      • Kwam Gary

I and a lot of others have put out loads of ROMs aosp/aokp and sense for the rezound. How can you say dev community is starving..
        Xda DragonStalker

        • brando56894

AOSP/AOKP ROMs are good but not perfect since ICS development has pretty much stopped. I was never a big fan of Sense. Once jellybean comes along things will get better.

    • brad

The Rezound is a darn good phone. My wife has it and we love it. Sure battery life sucks, but it is removable and she simply carries a back up in her purse just in case. The phone is fast, the screen is great, the camera takes top of the line pictures…what is not to like about the Rezound??

      • K L

what is not to like about the Rezound??
It’s a HTC, answer your question?

        • brad

What is so wrong with HTC. As I said, my wife has not had one issue with her Rezound since she got it last November. I don’t care a bit about a locked bootloader. Just give me a phone that works and does everything very well. The Rezound does that….minus battery life..BUT that is not an issue for a phone that has a removable battery!

      • BrianLipp

im just saying, they announced the Rezound in Nov, S3 processor, 720p display (is it their LCD brand? i cant remember, i just know its not AMOLED) and……Gingerbread. Fast forward 3 months and they announce the One series (mainly looking at One X here) with S4, better 720p LCD (2?) screen that almost everyone says is still the best phone screen and ICS. 3 months is too short a time for a jump like that. Im not saying the Rezound is bad, just that it was good when it came out, then a, lets call it “next gen” version comes out shortly after. Its kind of a dick move

        • trob6969

The One X wasn’t a “jump” from the rezound, it was moreso a trade off of features: for the One X you give up a much higher ppi, swap

    • Stew

How can a phone improve from those specs in three months???

      • BrianLipp

i dont know, but its HTC so theyll find a way to do it!

        • Stew

A 4K screen? An 8-core processor? 4GB of RAM? I mean those would be the only major upgrades to be made and they’re all unrealistic…

          • BrianLipp

geez, everyone is getting so butthurt and literal over this. Im making a joke here. Remember the whole Sensation/Sensation XE(XL?) thing? The Rezound and One X is the same situation. HTC has a reputation for releasing a phone as “flagship” and then, usually less than 6 months later, releasing a “refresh” of the device with new internals (and sometimes new hardware). Yet people are quick to forget the past

  • http://twitter.com/wade_county John P

    Droid DNA. WORST NAME EVAR

    • paul_cus

      Nah, the Cha Cha was.

      • kixofmyg0t

        ^THIS X100

Cha Cha? Who the eff thinks of that? I’m glad HTC moved away from the fairy names(Desire, Sparkle, Cha Cha, Venus….or w/e they were).

    • Trueblue711

I think it’s a great name. The DROID lineup has always been Verizon’s high-end phones, and they’ve drifted away from that the past year. This phone represents a return to the DROID lineup’s DNA.

  • chey023

Sounds great. This might be the the phone to persuade me to give up my precious unlimited data.Firstworld problems.

    • Ravi Rao

I’m very interested, especially with the price listed.

I’ve made the decision to give up unlimited data on both lines once the right phone comes out. I can’t justify spending full price for a device based on my usage.

  • http://twitter.com/StBurke Shawn Burke

    Sweet phone, awful name.

Also note the Nokia 822 (butt ugly btw) and the HTC 8X

    • michael arazan

HTC is also making a new windows phone for Verizon i have read to be out soon, just an FYI.

  • John Lane

they are really trying to tempt people to use subsidized upgrades so they can make money on the share everything plans

  • Butters619

So the Note II is $300, but the DLX is $200? That doesn’t make much sense.

Although, that makes the choice much easier.

    • r0lct

That’s Verizon increasing the subsidy for a DROID branded phone to push “their” phones.

      • KB Smoka

        Ahh, f*ck it…..You mad bro?

        • r0lct

Not as mad as someone trying to sync their Sense mail app with exchange. :P

  • SirSoloDolo

Will you be required to donate blood to purchase this phone?

    • Symbiotx

      Just a cheek swab

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

I guess I’m in the minority for thinking that the name is awesome. I’m a bit disappointed in the price of the Galaxy Note II, but at least it isn’t a ridiculous $370, like T-Mobile’s variant is.

    • JoshGroff

T-Mobile also doesn’t have a $350 ETF, theirs is only $200. Also, their plans are noticeably cheaper, and they have unlimited data.

      • chris125

They also have much less coverage. To me I’d pay a little more to know I’m covered wherever I go

        • JoshGroff

Pretty much the thing that made me switch from them in the first place, but T-Mobile has vastly improved in the 7 years I was with them prior.
