RAZR HD has a Massive Multi-color Notification Light Under the Front Speaker

I’m a sucker for a good notification light. When the Galaxy Nexus first launched with its multi-color notification light that sat in the chin of the device, I was super excited because this allowed for another level of customization. Thanks to apps like Light Flow, you can set up a different color for almost any application on your phone that has notifications. While playing with myΒ DROID RAZR HDΒ this morning, I realized that this is a phone that can take full advantage of multi-coloring, as well.Β

Embedded under a see-through plastic grill at the top of the front of the device, you’ll find the notification light. When lit, it fills up the entire plastic piece, giving off more colorful light than any phone that I can recall. Rather than being the simple dot of color that you see on most phones, it expands light throughout the see-through rectangular cover, making this one of the better notification lights I have seen.

I immediately installed Light Flow and started tweaking specific colors for specific apps. In the video below, you can see it in action.

Sony Xperia S with the transparent bar got this beat.

  • It would of been better if they would of made it shine through the Motorola logo!

  • Asuriyan

The Photon Q was the first phone to feature this. It really is slick and I envy my wife hers at times.

  • Uncle Paul

OK, so whats the deal with the bootloader? Unlockable yet?
Also, A car dock as good as the Droid X? If so we have a winner..

  • joejoe5709

    Gimmicky. But kinda neat.

  • Adam

I need a moto nexus. Take my money

    • omgitzjose

if moto makes a nexus u know verizon will get it because moto basically only makes phones for verizon now lol and in that case they can take my money too

      • Adam

Despite Verizon’s nazi like hold on updates, I appreciate their network compared to the competition. I’m gonna flash it with a ROM based on the latest build anyway, so the update really becomes a non-issue. Please god, make a moto nexus.

  • Larry Franks

I am on the fence, but leaning toward this phone. If you can make this notification bar light up like the Knight Rider scanner light, I’ll buy it on launch day. I’m a sucker for 80s shows about cars. I run a blog about Dukes of Hazzard.

  • Chris Hollenbeck

I’m used to seeing the red light on my Thunderbolt (low battery).

    • Zing!

    • CopierITGuy

      All the freakin’ time!!!

    • you should get this phone tomorrow then so you can use your phone. I will be upgrading to the razr maxx hd tomorrow and cant wait.

      • Robert M

did you get your maxx hd today? i got mine but my notification light doesnt work at all

        • Yes I did get it. I’m using it right now. My led works fine.I got it at 10am this morning with 47% battery and its 7:45 pm and I just now plugged it in (2%) so it did pretty good for as much as I played with it today.

        • neither does my notification light, I even took my first one back and same problem with the second one. Did you get yours resolved?

  • Nicholassss

I really wish my sissy RAZR had that.

  • Detonation

While we’re on the topic of notifications, how loud and strong are the speaker and vibrate? One of the first things I noticed when I get my GNex (coming from a DX) was how quiet and weak those things were.

  • Butters619

Any Droid Life readers in Brazil want to send me a GSM/LTE Razr HD? Seriously I want one.

  • Tom

The Damn Thing should say “By Your Command” when it Boots!

  • bogy25

If you have multiple notifications does it cycle through the different colors? I hoe the MAXX has this feature hint hint πŸ™‚

    • cooksta32676

      I wondered that…..my X doesn’t do that.

      • It actually does cycle through them with different colors!

        • Tyler

Is that when using Light Flow or stock? Because Light Flow cycles every 20 seconds (free) or 3 seconds (paid).

        • kixofmyg0t

Even without Lightflow it uses different colors for different notifications. Though I only think that works with facebook(blue).

  • omg, that looks sick.

  • Sam_K

Does light from the notification light affect the performance of the front facing camera? In other words if you’re on a video chat or taking a pic, does the notification light affect the picture? I’m asking because it looks like they’re pretty close together.

    • Diablo81588

Doesn’t the notification light only turn on with the screen off? Can’t see much of a point otherwise. You’ll be able to see the notification panel with the screen on.

      • Sam_K

Good point. I was just thinking what if you’re running an app Light Flow and you’re in the middle of taking a pic or doing a video chat, would the notification light go on and bleed into the camera lens?

    • cleetose

I believe the notification light only comes on when the screen is off.

  • a real question

    Does light flow still suck?

    • Tyler

Light flow sucked? It’s always worked for me besides when Jellly Bean was new but that was fixed a week or so after release.

  • Rocketjrb

  • Diablo81588

    Kick ass!

  • Aaron Fredricks

LOL. we’re such a simple community. i dont understand why OEMs have such a hard time satisfying us. we really dont ask for thattt much.

  • k_nivesout

Gaudy. Looks like Motorola is ricing out their devices (further). Although as a disclaimer, I’ve never been a huge fan of Motorola’s industrial design. I think the galaxy nexus, nexus 4, and AT&T LG optimus G serve as good examples of how to do a notification light.

    • Diablo81588

So a notification light on the side where you can’t see it is a good idea huh?

      • k_nivesout

I see what you’re saying, although from what I can tell, you would also be able to see the optimus G notification light from the front. I know I can see the power button on my nexus looking straight down at it so I don’t see where the big issue is. Of course, being that most of this blogs followers are moto/Verizon fanboys, I can see my opinion being unpopular. I just personally don’t think the mondo multicolor LED is very refined from a design perspective.

        • Diablo81588

I was referring to the Optimus G about the side light. Problem is, picture you have the phone set down to the right of you on a desk. I havn’t seen how bright it is, but I can only imagine it being tough to spot in certain positions, where this can be seen from virtually all angles.

          • k_nivesout

Fair enough. I can see where in that very specific situation, the light might be difficult to see. I still think it looks better (also LG’s device as a whole), but that’s of course JMHO.

  • Buckoman

  • NorCalGuy

I am getting it just for the light bar

  • Tyler Casilio

That is really cool actually. Nice

  • S9779

I love notification lights they give me a chubby, my favorite was the on the the og DROID. I could see it when my phone was on my hip

    • Diablo81588

      Gotta love gettin’ a chubby.

  • *Long slow whistle*

  • Apostrafee

The red was like Knight Rider!

  • Tom

Yea! more than 3 colors or is it two (damn Thunderbolt). This is great!

  • Ibrick

    That is pretty sweet!

  • nightscout13

    Kitt? Is that you???

  • radiohead14

    reminds me of knight rider

  • John Scott

I’m sold! Between the Motorola hardware, being Google owned, and cool features. Sold Sold Sold!

  • nightscout13

    ! WIN !

  • Josh

The maxx has this too I assume? I really want this phone, even more so now! lol.

    • kixofmyg0t

The HD and MAXX HD are identical except for internal memory and battery. In fact if you hold the 2 side by side you would have to squint to tell the difference.

    • It should have it, can’t imagine it wouldn’t. Identical phones other than battery and internal storage.

    • itznfb

Pretty sure the HD MAXX will be replacing my Thunderbolt. That or the LG Nexus. Going to have to wait until I get them both in hand though. Paying out of pocket is going to suck….

  • MikeSaver

Ever since I rooted my Gnex lightflow has stopped working, anyone else have this problem? None of the notification lights ever turn on. Even when I do the test.

Using verizon gnex, latest bugless beast build

    • MyStroPro

Have you tried a different rom to see if it comes back? It could be a rom glitch honestly.

    • Check and see if its marked on under services in accessibility. I’m running bug less 4.1.2 and its fine

      • MikeSaver

it is marked on. I’m running the same build. Any idea what else could be the issue? Would a restart of the phone do anything?

I remember I tried to run it when I first installed BB back in July and it was asking me about superuser permissions and then crashed..

        -Mike Saver

    • Is “Run in foreground” checked in the settings? Mine is. It works on my GNex w/ latest Bugless Beast.

      • MikeSaver

Yep that’s checked. Still no dice. Nothing lights up

    • Diablo81588

      Not so bugless eh? πŸ˜›

      • MikeSaver

Lol well it works for other people on BB. Not sure why it won’t for me. Open to suggestions.

  • Yitz

I’m so sick of always finding a different phone that has features that mine does not!!! I’m sure It’s neat when you get to try ’em all πŸ™‚ I just wish that so many more great features and hardware options – like this for instance – would be available on more devices!

  • Dr_Buttballs

Nice. A notification light is the only thing I don’t like about my SII.

  • JMonkeYJ

that is even better than i expected from the headline. really wanting a Moto Nexus right about now.

    • cooksta32676

Do you really think they’ll do a Nexus with this line launching. That’s the only thing that would stop me from getting this….maybe a newer chip, more memory. Stick with the 720 screen, 1080 would be impressive but not a deal maker for me. Qhd isn’t even that bad for basic stuff.

      • The qHD on my Droid Razr really isn’t that bad for average use however it is clearly noticeable when watching YouTube videos because for some reason YouTube uses red colors for the playback bar and it shows very pixelated on the Razr (that probably has more to do with it being a pentile display).

      • JMonkeYJ

my guess is that we won’t see a Moto Nexus that soon. maybe the supposed multi-Nexus system will allow staggered releases so we don’t have to wait a year in between Nexus releases, tho…

  • I must say, that is very sexy.

  • Mark

    Color me impressed

    • I see what you did there πŸ™‚

      • I was going to say the same thing but when I went to hit reply… alas, you beat me to it πŸ˜›

  • That light is mad sexy. If only my iPhone had one πŸ™

    • tobie azeez

why do u own an iPhone?

      • KleenDroid

I think he must be joking. Can’t think of any reason he would buy one. Unless maybe his company buys them and he has no choice and is stuck with it. He probably has a good phone for his personal use.

  • Trevor

That’s really cool. Good thinking Moto! Also, Light Flow is frickin AWESOME!!!

    • EC8CH

Cool it is. G-Nex light is slightly more bad ass because it is invisible when it’s not on, but I like this too.

    • brando56894

I used to customize all my notification lights on my OG Droid but I would never remember what I had them set to and it was annoying to have to set it up each time I flashed another rom. I’m on my second HTC device so just have the standard red and green lights πŸ™

      • Trevor

I’ve actually passed on a couple phones because it wasn’t possible to customize the notification light. Apparently it’s become a rather big deal to me!

  • All I can think of when imagining red is KITT or a Cylon

    • Diablo81588

  • that is pretty unreal

  • agent_xlvii

  • kixofmyg0t

Lol I bet the engineer behind the HD is happy his notification light got a entire Droid life post.

Also, I hear that speaker is LOUD AS F**K.

    • duke69111

If its true, that’s highly welcomed.

    • Indeed it is loud. πŸ™‚

      • JFB

        How’s the quality, though?

        • lilmoe2002

Yea, I’d like to know too.

          • michael arazan

C’mon Motorola with an HD nexus

        • CopierITGuy

I was in my local VZW store yesterday making the jump to Share Everything for our company, and I got to use my rep’s RAZR MAXX HD. It was very impressive. The speakerphone was incredibly loud and crystal clear – even with all of the background noise in the busy store! This phone is uber-impressive! Waiting to see what else releases before Christmas, but this will probably be my next device!

          • lilmoe2002

I wish it came with a quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro though πŸ™

      • Like the person below asked. How does it sound at loud volumes? Is there a significant amount of bass, or does it get really distorted? I only ask because I love listening to music and something like a really astonishing speaker could make it a lot easier than having to carry one of those iHome thingies which require batteries.

        • WAldenIV

The M is really loud, much louder than my old DX. I can’t tell you if it distorts, though, because I’ve never needed to use more than half volume even when in the shower.

          • I’m so glad I am not the only person who uses their device for music while in the shower! πŸ™‚

  • Guest

Surely google’s doing, too cool for Motorola (says jokingly)

  • Michael

    Ok, that’s legit.

  • This is a big deal.

  • ok

    • pball_inuyasha

My Droid 3 has at least 3 different colors for notifications. I’ve never played around to see how many colors it can do. I’d also guess other Moto phones have had mutlicolor notification lights for a while.

      • gokusimpson

True. My Droid X has all kinds of colors. Not sure why it’s a big deal now. Maybe something is different about it that I don’t know about.

        • It’s big and really easy to spot.

My Rezound (and any HTC I’ve ever ufsed) has a whopping…amber and green.

          • I remember that one…. I remember being frustrated when I saw people with lights that do all different colors until I got the Razr (non HD and non Maxx).

        • I think it’s the size of the indicator. If it’s just the colors yeah, most moto phones have supported full color range LED notifications forever. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think even the OG droid had full range LED notification abilities.

          • Mapekz

@facebook-500698751:disqus Yes, OG Droid had a multi color LED as well (which was what I was going to post before I read the article). I think this one is not only huge as hell but in a really well designed place that lets it stick out yet look awesome and appropriate at the same time.

        • ok

Not the multicolor LED but the LED+Speaker+Logo combo. I totally predicted lmao (well, wrong logo, but.)
