LG-E960 Pictured in the Wild, is This the First Sighting of LG’s Nexus? (Updated)

Remember the LG-E960, a device that we first reported last week after it cruised through the FCC? We questioned then whether or not this was the LG Nexus phone that the internet can’t stop talking about, and according to an XDA user, this is that same phone. He hasn’t said much about it’s origin other than a “random source” gave it to him and that it seems like a prototype.

As we can see from the pictures, it’s running stock Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and carries the codename Mako. In the past, Nexus devices all hid under fish names until they were released, so this at least looks good for the sake of this being a Nexus. The shape and styling are as plain black as you can get, but it does have on-screen navigation keys, something Google introduced to smartphones with the Galaxy Nexus.

Other than that, we have a couple of side shots that show a volume rocker and power switch on opposite sides of one another. We can see a camera with a flash on the back side and an LG boot animation (which is odd if this is a Nexus).

This tipster says that it works on both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Update:  Here is a set of pictures of the device without the dummy box. It does look like a Galaxy Nexus.

I can’t help but wonder why it has the stock Android browser instead of Chrome? Didn’t Chrome become the standard with Jelly Bean?

What do you guys think? Liking? Hating?

Cheers to everyone who sent this in!

I don’t often take spy photos, but when I do… I do it from the scene of an episode of “Hoarders”

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

I hope it’s the end of the curved display.

  • anezarati

my jb verizon gnex still has the stock broswer on it. obviously it was updated from ics, so maybe this test device started out with ics and was updated to 4.1.1 then 4.1.2

  • florious80

Kellen, Jelly Bean on my Vzw Gnex still uses the stock browser, not Chrome.

  • Alan Paone

The browser’s there because they’re just testing the open-source stuff. The search bar looks wrong because they’re using the non-google, opensource search thats built into android. The probably don’t bother installing gmail, chrome and search on test builds.

Im pretty sure this isnt a nexus…
    exhibit a) The boot screen
exhibit b) the lack of pogo pin connectors
exhibit c) the guy who posted the pics has the device up for sale for drying out loud…

  • burntcookie90

    Looks rather thick

  • Art Carter

Hey guys check out the pic on the bottom far right (last photo), is me or does that look like a case around the phone. If it is indeed a case, than it appears to be rounded after all.

  • stubbX

    Whats with the black levels?

  • Bionic

Here is my theory. Motorola is making a Verizon nexus along with Samsung as well. LG is making the ATT and t mobile version

    • Larizard

that’s what i thought too. LG will make the international/ATT/T-mo version.
Moto will make a Droid branded Nexus for Big Red (“occam”).

  • DainLaguna

i kinda sorta saw the resemblance between certain og galaxy devices and the iphone…but even as a dyed in the wool google fanboy, that back shot look so much like an iphone its not even funny. not to say it isnt a handsome design, its just VERY derivative. hopefully this is just a developer device. lg’s newer (overseas at least) designs are very unique, and if they give it a curved-glass aesthetic like the previous nexi, i’ll be happy about it.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackTaxi2d BlackTaxi2d

    disgustingly large bezel :(

    • datbezel

yeah, really don’t see the need to take up screen real estate with software buttons if you’re going to have a bezel that takes up half the height of the device anyway…

  • http://twitter.com/Pyre0 Steven DeFreitas

It’s in a box. That’s not how it really looks.

  • TheCheapGamer

    I have a great idea…
Let every device be a Nexus, no more skins!

    • DainLaguna

while i love stock android too, no more skins means less differentiation between oems…which would kill em. to which i’ll add…we just need more oem nexi

  • UrDoGG

From a design standpoint, I am completely unimpressed. Go ahead, down rank me.

  • jack ciroc

This a little irrelevant but the code name mako reminds me of the game ff7

    • Larizard

      mako is a shark, too

      • fixxmyhead

yea like mako tsunami from Yugiooooooh. he was the fisherman duelist

  • Paul

The chin is so big it might as well have capacitive buttons so you can have a larger viewing area on the screen. I’m pretty sure Google visioned an edgeless phone when they brought out the onscreen keys.

  • MattyWalnuts

dear picture taker, please clean your studio apartment before taking shots for the world to see

  • JMonkeYJ

that thing is taking the Motorola chin to new levels of Leno-ness.

  • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

looks really nice….but honestly, im not the only one to say it, but it seriously looks like an iphone from the back. dont kill me, but it really kinda does. and i know im gonna get reamed for saying i want a removable battery, but i want a removable battery. ive been able to deal with non removable storage, but a non removable battery would just kill me.

    • UrDoGG

      ^^This.

  • Tardy

    Look at this!
    https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/view?q=&psc=G&filter=1&camera=mako
Here’s the photos from Picasa. All the photos were taken by Korean, and the info in the EXIF …

    Camera Google
    Model mako

    It’s obvious…

    • Larizard

why is this down-voted? this is front page material. It does say Google and “mako” in there.

  • Aj

I thought that it was supposed to have a ring around it and the “nexus x” on the back?

  • JDub

What’s the point of the cupboards if everything is going to sit on the counter?

    • http://www.facebook.com/gerald.n.pelt Gerald Neal Pelt

      LMAO!

    • Ray

      LOL!

  • Jason Purp

    I want it.

  • ERIFNOMI

    That viewing angle.

    • Diablo81588

      Could be a glare?

      • ERIFNOMI

I mean that in a good way. Check out the third to last picture.

        • http://twitter.com/havens1515 Randroid

I actually noticed that too. The screen itself is BARELY in the picture, but you can see the image on the screen perfectly.

  • Detonation

Looks (hopefully) like it’s in one of the bumper cases like they hid the GS3 in. See the corners of the back shot. Because otherwise it’s get of thick and bulky.

  • speraider430

I can’t wait for someone in the comments to complain about lack of an SD slot for their five 64gb cards they always carry and no removable battery for the 3 spares they keep with the g-nex….WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!

    • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

i have a spare battery…… nothing is wrong with me

    • http://twitter.com/Mayzse Dave Amburn

SD slot I can live without. As far as removable battery, sounds like you’ve never been somewhere with the Gnex where you had to go all day without charging it and actually use it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/larry.wei Larry Wei

It definitely looks like it’s in some sort of case to hide it’s true form, no?

  • dan

    The phone looks really thick

    • Peter Stover

Its either 3/4 inch or 7/8 inch!

  • Jonathan Stevens

Not a big fan of the upper & lower bezel/chin, the third thumbnail in the first row looks a bit like a wide i*hone. Edge to edge would be nice, but the sides on this seem decent. Looks like the body’s unfinished to me, I’d expect the final version to have a slightly different shape and finish.
Edit: It’s possible that this is a case wrapped around the phone

  • http://www.facebook.com/gerald.n.pelt Gerald Neal Pelt

Don’t know about an LG nexus phone, love my G nex!

  • http://www.twitter.com/helmes/ Henry

I thought the stock browser was going away for all future devices?

    • descendency

The stock browser is part of the AOSP build. Google isn’t pushing Chrome to the AOSP.

    • Larizard

That was Motorola making that promise, i believe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rodger.ahearn Rodger Ahearn

    Look at that counter yikes!

  • BaconEater

Meh. I’m still stuck with my galaxy nexus for another year.

    • Ash Hanna

Stuck…LikeMe…..Not A Bad devIce To Get Stuck With Tho
Time To Get In Some Over Time Lol

    • michael arazan

Sell it on ebay, or go to swappa, or craigslist, and use the 100-150 you get from it towards the new Nexus phone. I’ve already started saving up to $600, hopefully Verizon isn’t going to charge more than that, if they do, I’m going to figure out a way to put antennas and software for the phone of my Gnex into a Nexus 7.

      • http://twitter.com/xtcvapor uh what

Why kid yourself? Verizon won’t get the Nexus…. I have Verizon and I’ve already come to terms with that

    • picaso86

      LG electronics really suck!

  • Alexander Garcia

Oh what a f–kin’ tease! Why didn’t he strip it outta that gawd awful box!?

    • r0lct

Agreed, no way that’s final hardware. Or I would hope not.

  • http://twitter.com/BodaciousBryce Bryce

Incoming joke about apple suing Lg in 3, 2, 1

    • Trevor

Pretty sure that’s the only company they haven’t sued.

  • Dale Gribble

The thumbnails make it look disgustingly thick. Good thing I viewed the full size.

  • Jack

Looks pretty fat from the pics to be honest. And i’m just not a fan of LG phones in general. I think I’ll pass on this and wait for the Nexus from another manufacturer

  • Greyhame

Definitely not AMOLED blacks on that boot pic.

    • StuckwithmyGnexanyway

Was thinking the same thing. Looks washed out. Huge strike against it for me. Looks like a non-removable battery might be likely too. The fact that it’s LG in the first place was already a check in the cons column (just being honest)… soo…. pass.

  • Aran Miller

I think LG is about to get sued by Apple to be honest….

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Can we just cut that out?

      • 4n1m4L

Really, honestly, I’d agree. At least they didn’t put a home button on it like the gs3.

        • TheCheapGamer

          My Droid X had a home button…

          • Diablo81588

It wasn’t a single home button right in the middle either, that is coincidentally not round to make it look like they didn’t copy the iPhone.

        • Ray

The Home button on my GS3 is beautiful. Stop hating! :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bobby-Wright/100000797708370 Bobby Wright

Ha! i was thinking the exact same thing. If this is the nexus then I will need to snag one before Apple counts the number of ((shape)) patents LG violated..It does look like it might have a dummy case around it though.

    • http://twitter.com/havens1515 Randroid

It’s definitely thick enough to look like the iPhone

    • Tim Hardeman

No chance in hell — Apple stole the iPhone 4 design from LG, so they really have no ground to stand on.

  • http://twitter.com/DrewM25 Drew M

I am guessing this one will be a no go on Verizon?

    • Josh Nichols

If it works on T-Mobile or AT&T it will not work on Verizon in its current configuration, no.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Looking at the last pic…. Is it in one of those GS3 boxed dummy cases?

    • Jonathan Gomez

That’s what I was gonna say. It looks similar to the GS3 prototypes. Underneath that the design looks more rounded.

      • michael arazan

And why is there so much bezel on the top and bottom, like a half inch or more on them each. The phone would have looked a lot slicker getting rid of the bezel or expanding the screen if the space was needed, making it all edge to edge.

        • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Edge to edge displays are stupid when it is a TOUCH screen. When you hold your phone, do your fingers touch the very edge of the display where the bezel is? Without a bezel your phone would be registering rogue input constantly.

          • Beezey

i mean throw a case on there and you’re good, i dont understand why people get so worked up about that

          • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

There is nothing to get worked up about, just applying some common sense to an extremely technical market.

  • Smokeey

Doesn’t look to be a Nexus though, but rather maybe a in-house developer device.

  • p_droid

    Sexy can I?!

  • Lachlan De Hayr

Don’t care if it’s only 16GB want it. Want it now!
