The difference is that you have to interact with it, whereas on Android the app can prepare (as it can do it with whatever you save in the right way) and present it for you (with that play/pause/tracker you see up there).

Actually,
Apple didn’t advertise it, but with iOS 6, any selectable text can be
read aloud. It figures out written language from context and when it’s
not sure, it offers languages in a pop-up. Don’t believe me? It’s in
settings under accessibility, called “Speak Selection” and is off by
default. It even highlights words as they are being read and allows for
pause/resume. You can choose how fast or slow text is read aloud in the
options, as well as which dialects to use.
