My speakers already have a nice amp, so it would just be wasted money. They really should offer the device without an amp.

No, I assume you’re just out of the loop on current events as are many. In the last year much attention has been made of tech companies producing items overseas (particularly Apple) and outsourcing jobs some people feel could be done here. At various interviews companies’ executives claim they CAN’T make those items here because of labor laws, wages, work ethics, and access to materials. Now, the Nexus Q, to much fanfare no less, is being manufactured in the USA. It is in this light, my comment is sarcastic. The dots have been connected.

If you wanted to watch media belonging to you and your friends, family, visitors on a Google TV how would you do it?
Not happening. As a matter of fact watching any video purchased through Play store requires jumping through hoops.

The Q is meant to be something new, Whether it takes off or not we shall see. But it’s not meant to overlap and/or compete with GTV.

If you can name me the product that runs on Android, has the best YouTube player for TV yet made, full control via Android, integrated multiple user interface with Android allowing access to Google Music by individual, a super-slick form factor, made in the USA, and a pretty nice amp with matched speakers/cables (very important; far more so for audiophiles than the power of the system) that’s around your $99 price point I’ll agree that this is overpriced. Until that point, it’s just niche.

Because the Vizio co-star was not made and designed by Google to receive the coolest latest updates first. Imagine pairing the Nexus Q with Project Glass. The possibilities going forward are there. Look at all the recent next-gen patents Google has been filing for Project Glass and other next-gen things.

With the hacking already done on this I can see this as being kind of awesome. The ability to fully utilize the Android Market on your TV. Control streaming music via the handset. Ability to share when people are over. The possibilities are endless. That’s why they gave it away at I/O. They wanted devs to hack it and come up with cool ways to use it.

If it was missing the amp, it wouldn’t be much of a music player, and that would pretty much defeat the whole point. This isn’t a Goole TV replacement, and it’s not a Nexus at home replacement. My guess is that it’s the first piece of hardware that they’re planning on releasing, and they thought that a music player would be the best way to go.
If you’re going to make a music player, it’s a good idea to not skimp on the details, so they included a good amp, obviously spent a ton of time on design, and even made speakers cables to go with it. If you’re the kind of person who’s going to be an early adopter of this kind of audio tech, those kinds of things are very important, and are the kinds of details that are worth paying for. Obviously, that kind of market exists (even if it’s not me).

I think that’s basically it’s intended purpose, it’s marketed as a social music player. Well, to utilize Google Music (you can upload any music you want, it doesn’t have to come from the Play store). I assume most people who are buying own a decent set of speakers already, and use Google Music.

I’m sure this must be a good sign for Google, and probably a sign that we’ll end up seeing more hardware designed by them.
Ahead of the announcement and launch of the Q, they had to make some predictions of how many they expected to sell initially/per month/per year, etc. Plus how many they would need to sell to break even, and what level of demand they could scale up to if it was a success.
Based on all that they built/scheduled some for the initial launch, it probably wasn’t 10m (like the Galaxy S3), but it would have to be high enough to fall within some range that includes breaking even, otherwise the project would’ve never made it to market. Selling out your initial allocation is a good sign that the project is going to be at least profitable.
Of course, this could be a situation like the Nexus7, where they’re selling the hardware at cost (or maybe even at a loss), with the expectation that profits would be driven by purchases through the Play store, but that analysis would still rest on selling a certain minimum number of units.

Oh believe me, I very much doubt I will ever order from them again. I sent an email asking to cancel my Q order, I’m sure it will end up like my other request which was to cancel my N7 order, finally got a reply to it a week and a half later, half a week after I got the N7, saying it’s still too late to cancel.

It’s just not run well, and I’m not going out of my way to hand them money for something I mostly only bought on principle (made in america). I don’t think it’s rational for anyone to suggest you just eat somebody screwing with almost $1k of your money like it’s a city park and not a bank account.

They’ve sold the Nexus, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus on the play store.

And that’s all good and fine but it doesn’t make it suck any less that they lock up $340, $282, and another $282. Only one of which is valid, with no explanation or recourse. Again, I don’t mind the shipping delay (it’s frustrating, as it seems they use a dartboard to determine shipping order, but it isn’t a huge deal) I mind the d**king around with my bank account without any ability to get them to stop. I’m not running around bouncing checks or anything, far from it. But a bank account isn’t someplace you put your fingers when you feel like it.

If it isn’t on the dock, ready for UPS…stay the hell away from my money.
