Quick Look: Samsung Galaxy S3 Flip Cover

If you checked out our Galaxy S3 review from last night, then you probably saw the two pictures under the “Accessories” section of the device’s Flip Cover. There isn’t a ton to say about it, but we thought we’d whip up a quick video to show it off a bit. For those that haven’t seen it yet, think of the Flip Cover as a replacement battery cover with a soft, screen guard attached. It flips open and closed over the device, hence the name. It probably won’t offer you the ultimate amount of protection, but it will give your screen some relief when sliding the device in and out of pockets or bags. We are wondering how easy it is going to be to adjust the volume with this cover on though.

The Flip cover at Rs 1790 is neither useful nor ornamental. There is no magnet to keep the flap in position, I dropped the Phone accidently and it fell on the concrete floor completely open and the screen face down. Fortunately the screen guard took all the damage which had to be replaced another Rs 500. I am not at all confident of any protection.

Unbelievable. It’s actually surprising that it’s not called S-Cover. Would it be possible for Samsung to copy Apple any more than they do?

while they are at it, they should make another accessory that puts an external antenna on the top to improve reception and then also put a smaller display on the outside of the flap(lcd to save battery) so you don’t have to open it to see who is calling. the next iteration of the phone could be smaller to fit in your pocket better with all the external accessories. here is a mockup: http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/wp-content/phoneimages/Z1403.jpg

so no one has asked this question. is it magnetic, so it stays snug against the screen, even when it’s in your pocket & rattling around with other stuff? or does it come away from the screen because there’s nothing to keep it tight against the phone?

This was available for the note. Makes sense for the note, GSIII…not so much. Its a pretty cool thing though. Not 29.99 cool, but pretty cool. Also, its pretty flimsy.

I imagine volume buttons will be as difficult to push as they are through TPU cases with soft spots. Probably easier, actually.

These types of cases are very common in Asia (India etc). In fact.. people go out of their way to purchases such cases.. especially the ones who are new to smartphones.
The biggest reason for the popularity of these cases are because people are hesitant to expose the screens to the elements.. and in such countries they live very much exposed to the elements.. there is plenty of dust, particles flying about.. crowd bumping into each other etc… hence it suits them quite well from what I understand.

  If people are bumping into each other, it does not anything to do with the flip covers; and, dust and elements are not gonna get onto your phone screen everytime you use it. I guess your connecting the flip covers with the Asian countries like India is nothing but your assumption.

Not liking it. The idea seems nice, but I would not want that flap whipping around there and how would I still hold it one handed and text, scroll etc?

If the phone is on and you close the flip cover it would automatically turn the phone off and lock the screen, correct? Does the home button turn the screen on when pressed? If so, this cover would be a nightmare (I’m assuming it doesn’t). Just saw the hump for the home screen button…ignore my last comment.

I actuality kinda like this. It’d be better if you could flip it all the way back and clip it to stay open while using the phone but still not to shabby.
