If 900000 a day multiply that by 365 = 328,500,000
Then multiply that by average life of a phone or upgrade time on major carriers 2 years = 657,000,000
That just barely covers the U.S population in 2 years so yeah worldwide I could see it!!!

ok, lets see… 900,000/24=37500, 37500/60=625, 625/60=10.41… so there is about 37,500 android phones activated per hour, 625 per minute, and 10.41 per second… holy crap

How does this compare to other OS’s? iOS, Blackberry, etc? 900k seems like an awful lots, but so does 500k, it would be interesting to see this number put in perspective. I know that other companies don’t usually report activations, but instead do sales or subscribers or something, but I’m sure we could dig up something comparable.

Depends on whether or not they were refurbished. Each device is counted only once, so it doesn’t matter how many times it gets returned, refurbished, re-flashed, w/e…

If each of them was a brand-new device, out of the box, then yes. Google counted each one. (…and will not count them when they get “refurbished” to someone else)

Yes, as long as you activated each one only once. They only count 1 activation per phone. At the end of the day, Google doesn’t care if 1 million people buy one phone or one person buys 1 million phones.

Not if those are refurbished units someone else had. As it states above, once per device. But yes, I’m sure there’s some inflation of numbers going on due to returns, but I wouldn’t think it is dramatic.

What it confirms is most of the Android sales/activations are of GB devices likely because they are free/cheap and the DROID lineup on Verizon doesn’t even have an ICS phone yet.
Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s the cheap (<$100)/free phones likely making up the majority of worldwide sales.

I will leave this here for you genius, via Android Central although this useful information has been available since these activation numbers have been growing.

“When a new Android device with a cellular radio has a Google account signed into it, it’s counted as an activation. Each device only gets counted once — not when you flash a new ROM, or when you sell it, just the first time the device is registered.”
