Verizon CFO: Unlimited Data Plans Going Away, All Users Pushed Onto Shared Data

verizon logo

During the JP Morgan Media and Telecom conference, Verizon’s CFO Fran “ShamWow” Shammo dropped a bomb that most of you are not going to be a fan of. During his talk, he mentioned that unlimited data plans will go away completely when the company introduces shared data plans this summer. He talked about everyone’s next upgrade cycle and how at that time, users will be forced into shared data tiers and off of the unlimited plans that you have come to love. He mentioned specifically that 3G users on unlimited data will indeed have to go into a shared plan once they upgrade to a 4G phone, but in the quote we have below, it sounds like it is going beyond that.

Here is the quote from the conference:

LTE is our anchor point for data share. So as you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto a data share plan. And moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everyone into a tiered structure/data share type plan.

So when you think about our 3G base, a lot of our 3G base is unlimited. As they start migrating to 4G they will have to come off of unlimited and go into the data share plan. And that’s beneficial for us for many reason, obviously.

Many of you are currently “grandfathered” into unlimited data and cherish that status as if it were your own child, so this move is going to be one that won’t be taken kindly. In the quote above, Shammo does mention that eventually, “everyone” will be on a share, but for now, it seems like just 3G customers who are forced into upgrading to 4G phones. The scariest part is the mention of your next upgrade cycle, which for many of you, isn’t all that far off.

Update:  This whole conversation with Shammo at the JP Morgan conference is fascinating. He really opened up and talked about their plans to make more and more money off of tiered data plans. They have set them up so that as consumers realize the power of LTE and use it more, that they will have to keep buying up in tiers. Also, as families add more devices over time, they will again have to buy up in tiers. While I understand this is a business and Verizon needs to continue to find ways to increase revenues, this is like a slap in the face to its customers. As if we all aren’t paying enough already, the way shared data plans are set up (according to Shammo), is to get you to continue to spend more and more money on data. Welcome to the future, folks.

  • Unlimited-Data-Plan

Here’s one solution to keep your unlimited data plan!

  • i’m glad i just got grandfathered in a couple months ago, but looks like my next phone might not be a smart one

  • Jwhap

900 comments between two posts…….people are PISSED!

  • nightwaves

Ok everyone revolt……Verizon has finally shown why they chose the color red for there logo when they developed it…..They chose red because they are blood sucking greedy corporate suits……Hence the red stands for blood.

Lets all band together and put an end to this before its to late.

    1. When will the end of grandfathering happen? I figure we will all be watching to see, so not a good question.
    2. Will this only affect upgrades or also phones bought for full price?

2.5. I got an extra line (ghost line) 4 months ago so that I could get the Rezound without waiting for my April upgrade. I am up for an upgrade now, and my contract is up in a month. Will I lose my unlimited if I don’t renew my contract?

    3. What if I upgraded soon, but then immediately had my old phone activated again, waited until it dies, and then had my new, unused upgrade activated in a couple years (assuming technology doesn’t change so much that it won’t work anymore), would I lose my unlimited then?

    4. Can I transfer my phone number and unlimited data to my extra line and dump that phone number and take over the remainder of that contract once mine is done?

F-You Verizon, I can’t believe I am reading this! WTF MAN!

  • enigmaco

Looks like I got kicked off verizons forum for a simple comment. Either that or they are being flooded because I can’t log into it. They deleted my comment because I just spoke the truth with no foul language involved. This really pisses me off, I can’t remember the last time I was on a tiered data plan.

  • Evil-D

So I am already on 4g LTE and unlimited from my 3g days. So this doesn’t effect me right?

  • T.O.

Imagine what my bill would be since I have used 115 gb this month!!!
Looks like I’m keeping my rezound forever

  • Edward

I just created a petition: Verizon Wireless: allow unlimited users on 4G to keep unlimited data for another upgrade, because I care deeply about this very important issue.

I’m trying to collect 800 signatures, and I could really use your help.

To read more about what I’m trying to do and to sign my petition, click here:

    It’ll just take a minute!

Once you’re done, please ask your friends to sign the petition as well. Grassroots movements succeed because people like you are willing to spread the word!

When did the gnexus come out? 6 months ago? so thats 14 more months till we all go to sprint?

  • Vollrathian

If Verizon actually goes through with this I’m sure AT&T will be right behind them. I’m actually AT&T hadn’t forced people out of their unlimited data plans already, I think verizons lte coverage had surpassed AT&Ts 3G coverage rofl

  • dbag

looks like i’ll eventually switch to sprint when this hits

  • So I guess this means I should get my GNex now? 😐

  • Thats it! I have had it with Verizon. I’m gone see you later you greedy bunch of people. I hope you make a lot more money when everyone leaves.

  • willie

no more cell phone for me if this happens I will use wifi devices and keep in contact that way

  • AndroidUser00110001

JP Morgan: Verizon..our dumb ass CEO and the manager of our trading group just lost 2-3 billion dollars and yet we still paid one 15 million and the other 26 million for the year. Can you help us get that back?

Verizon: Sure, we will screw customers more, invest or new found revenue stream with you guys but when we ask for a favor down the road you will have to be there, no matter how shady it might be.

JP Morgan: Done deal, F***K the consumers.

  • Androidandwp7equalsPower

Thank goodness, I renewed my contract with VZW, so I have 2 years more of unlimited data, and if they change it, I can go to Sprint.

  • It’s almost hilarious how trapped we are as consumers. Gasoline and Cell phones… SELL YOUR SOUL

  • kris

This would be good for tablets though, alot of people don’t have a tablet because they dont wanna pay 600 bucks for a wifi model or another 30 a month to put device on plan. I guess it depends on what these shared plans are? 2 gigs is a joke, but 8 gigs for 30 bucks could supply a few devices.

  • Noah D.

Or if you’re willing to spend a little extra, add a line and upgrade to 4g by switching the phones around. And to make it even cheaper go to Amazon Wireless and add the line from there, got my Gnex for 69.99 before the price drop.

  • MrEnglish

I have no problem dumping Verizon. I really have no problem dumping cell data altogether. They are going to do what they need to survive…..and so will I.

  • tech247

I hate Verizon……………but there is no other choice if you want rock solid national reliability. AT&T, Sprint and especially T-mobile are all bad jokes…..

  • djembeman

I guess I’ll have to find other ways to “upgrade” to a new phone next time. About 1.5 years from now. Seriously??? The two $30 data plans that I currently pay for isn’t enough for them??? My $180 +/- that I pay them per month isn’t enough??? I guess I’ll try to make my Bionic last like 5 years.

  • crobson1985

I have no reason for a personal cellphone with out unlimited data if it goes this way I will cancel my line and just carry my company phone.

  • pat kerby

Well i got my unlimited plan and i am a 4G user! But if Verizon drops my plan, were going to Sprint!

  • Well when that happens bye bye verizon

  • AlexR69
  • As @facebook-1257157532:disqus points out, we finally won’t feel we’re enslaved to Verizon. We’ll be freed for the other providers to compete for our business. I guess this is why independence among carriers is so important.

On the other hand, I don’t really mind the thought of buying a phone at full price just to continue my month-to-month as long as they’ll let me.

  • Michael Figueira

See ya later Verizon. I’m taking my 4 devices and going to Sprint!

  • micco

I doubt this will actually happen but if it does I am going to a pre paid unlimited plan.. Its cheaper anyway..

  • Trevor

    What a pisser.

  • The wording makes it seem as if you only get pushed if you upgrade. So I will never upgrade. Galaxy Nexus, it’s you and me for the long haul.

  • Drewgy

I am paying too much already, especially with no access to 4G unless I happen to leave my 3G black hole and drive 45 minutes. No unlimited data = another carrier.

  • Phil V

I’m not going to freak out just yet but if this is true I may look elsewhere for my service provider. I have been with Verizon for 15 years and they have been very good about carrying my contracts forward. I have a voice plan that hasn’t been offered in maybe 10 years or more but they honor it to this day. If they can’t carry my unlimited forward that opens things up for me to review many carriers and I most surely will look at them all if this is the case. I would like to stay with them but I have to do what makes the most sense for me and my house. I sure hope they come to their senses.

  • mdeamicis

VWERIZON, HEAR THIS. wall mart sells a mid range android for about 150 bucks with a 40 dollar a month unlimited every ting plan. I love my 4g speed but I will throw my bionic in the toilet if you ever pull this shit on me.

  • LoyalCustomer

Please Start a Petition to stop them!

  • Tom

I’m not jumping to conclusions yet. I’ll wait and see what happens down the line (in 1.5 years) when my contract is up. I’ll make my decision then. No matter what, I’m not going to make a snap decision based on this. There are too many factors in choosing a phone and a service to just take only one into consideration.

  • Jesus Malena

Just like you can’t get out of their contract. They can’t make changes in the middle of them. If they do that alone nullifies the contract. They can’t charge you a cancellation fee because they changed the terms on you. If their customer service says no, they’ll be getting sued, period.

  • BlueDolphin

I have a question about this. Would this be a good time to upgrade to a 4G phone so I can keep unlimited data? I have the Droid X right now and I’m thinking about waiting for the SIII. Help?

  • Finire

I’ve got to be honest and put my little thoughts into this.

I have stayed with verizon because they have amazing coverage, and I have my unlimited data plan. I don’t think I’ve ever gone over 4GB/Month, but it’s really comforting knowing that I have it. Could I do with only 4 per month? Sure I could… But you know what? I don’t want to HAVE to do with 4 per month.

  • Confused and Disgusted

This is a bunch of bull. Even more after yesterday in my town Alltel had a tent set up giving out free phones with free activation on a $10.00 month plan if you presented a food stamp card. This is why our plan continues to rise! So that we may continue to pay for those who milk the system. Oh and lets not forget about the “OBAMA PHONES”. When do I start getting my “FREEBIES” for being a hard working tax contributing citizen!?!?!?!?!?

    • Actually, this is the result of a GOP-backed company which can afford to treat its customers better but want to clamp down on us in order to get us to blame entities which have nothing to do with the mobile phone world.
      Either that or you just work for Fox News or something. Keep your politics to yourself, please. Or get Credo Mobile. {{-_-}}

      • Confused and Digusted

Money is Politics Grand Master!! Or maybe you benefit from the “FREEBIES”!?

  • when they kill the 4g data ill do the switch to GSM/LTE and hop from badass phone to badass phone.

  • cmorty72

Didn’t Cingular do something like this a while back, and got burned majorly for it? Unlimited data was the ONLY reason I’ve stayed with Verizon this long (and I’ve been with these greedy sob’s since the Bell Atlantic days)! If this is actually for real and not Verizon’s CEO just testing the waters with its greedy plan… then like everyone else, I’m gone!!

  • No. No No No.

  • TheWickedShepherd

This is moronic how Google is pushing for more reliance on cloud services that use data and carriers are pushing out more draconian data limits at the same time.

  • kris

How is this not a breach, they made a minor change to contracts last jjune anand it was enough foe oopportunists to get out.

    • Again… They won’t make any changes to one’s contract until their current contract is up and you re-sign one. (and possibly even if you just go month-to-month)

  • Liquidretro

This might just rally the troops

  • inboy81

Cell phone company 🙂 can I pay you $30 dollars to stay with you and be your prisoner for 2 more years? Cell phone company take my $30 “upgrade punishment” so I can give you $2,000 or more the next 2 years. Maybe if Im lucky I will get a droid that has alot of bugs and not thought out completely. Cell phone company I want to pay you so you can mirco manage me. Please cell phone company take my “upgrade punishment” fee.. Now take away my unlimited data that you allowed me to have. You take away the NE2, and make excuses of course to why. BOYCOTT! Cell phone companies. The bigger they get the greedierthey get. Just like government
