RAZR, RAZR MAXX and HTC Rezound Receiving Ice Cream Sandwich Updates as Early as Next Week?

According to Best Buy systems that were updated this afternoon, Verizon is preparing to launch Ice Cream Sandwich updates for 3 of their top phones, the DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, and HTC Rezound. Both Moto and Verizon had caught flack for not giving specific enough time frames for updates to the RAZRs, but we speculated at that time that it was likely because they were going to try to release them as soon as possible. If this screenshot from BBY is correct, that assumption was also on point. The Rezound was in a similar boat – we knew it was getting it, but had no idea when. We may know now.

How does April 4 for the RAZRs and April 6 for the Rezound, sound?

We checked out the usual spots for update info and came up empty. If these all do get pushed next week though, we are in for some fun.

That would be a nice treat.

  • Daniel Archibald33

To all Samsung adopters! Quit trolling Motorola posts

  • Cruise2876

Isnt it funny how MOTOROLA and HTC were the first to build Android phones and now samsung thinks it can compete? They try and try and only manage to build mediocrity.

    • KaseyLa2da

Isn’t it funny how the GS2 was phone of the year and outsold every other Android device? They try and try…

  • Rick

Tbolt taking up the rear yet again

  • ABerry5

This would be excellent news for.gnex owners if it actually happens.. it should give Google a kick in the ass and rethink their lives why all nexus phones are updated yet.. unfortunately if u were an OG ans DX owner like I was then you know all too well this is just stage 1.. stage 2 comes the day the update is suppose to be released and no one gets updated.. stage 3 happens the following few days when all the leaked rumors of the update bricking phones happens then fast forward 2 months to stage 4 when u get ur bugged update!

  • Cgh

Hopefully, this is not April’s fool joke.
    O.O

  • rdnckcub

i just received an email asking to participate in a soak test specifically for the Razr/Razr maxx, ICS?!

  • Alexander Garcia

LOL I’m 90% sure that this is all an April Fools joke! Please prove me wrong Motorizon!

  • appdaddy

Man. I may trade my nexus in for the Maxx! ICS AND an awesome battery life!?!?! Am I wrong to think this way??? Battery is the only knock on the Gnex. Extended battery or not. Blur shmur…. Bootstrap roms are a-ok for me… So, SHOULD I stay or Should I go????????

    • Alexander Garcia

If I were to get the G-Nex, it would only ONLY be the GSM version runnin’ on T-Mo. If I need a kick @$$ phone on VZW, RAZR Maxx is the only way to go. Cheers.  =)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

i would, but my 4th nexus is on its way,and they didnt give me that option, of course they might if the maxx has ics

    941 error… anybody ???

    • KaseyLa2da

It means you’re a negative prick.

  • Danielcee3

Wtf galaxy nexus lte on 4.0.2 is buggy af

  • http://www.facebook.com/mattenno Matthew Ennocenti

When is my Droid 1 getting ICS? lulz

I really want to see how ICS affects my Maxx’s battery life…will it be even better?

  • RoadsterHD1

    What about Bionic!!!!

    • Sk102704

The Bionic is very similar to the Razr/Mazz (hardware and software) so I would think the Bionic isn’t too far away. At least I hope!

  • RoadsterHD1
  • MKader17

I’m not mad that I won’t have 4.0.4 (considering I already have it, but I won’t use that excuse) but I feel it is certainly a legitimate to confront Google about why one of there Nexus devices will be behind other skinned devices and there other Nexus device still doesn’t have ICS.

That is the big point of having a Nexus and if CDMA phones such as these are getting it, then why in the world would the Galaxy Nexus CDMA not have it?

    • Darthseph23

I guess a lot of GalNex users didn’t read about Google no longer considers CDMA devices true Nexus products because of the Verizon approval period.  It’s funny that everyone missed the article here:

      http://www.droid-life.com/2012/02/06/google-offers-further-clarification-on-why-they-removed-support-for-cdma-devices-in-aosp-like-the-galaxy-nexus/

      • MKader17

First, just to be clear this change is only related to AOSP support for these devices — that is, personal custom builds.

These are obviously still officially-supported Nexus devices for everyday use, they will receive official software updates, and so on.

Similarly, these are still fully-supported development devices for app developers.

Shall I continue to quote the official message from Google that you linked me too?

      • KaseyLa2da

It’s funny that you missed the article above that doesn’t even mention the phone you’re talking about. Then people wonder how these little girl fights start in here.

    • r0lct

It’s why it’s called the Toro, Verizon sidestepped Google and made the nexus program miss its mark.

      • MKader17

This is true, but what makes things difficult for Toro are the CDMA binaries and apk signing that is handled by Verizon due to IP. The Razr, Maxx, etc. have to go through the same approval process, so there is no reason that Google couldn’t have got this out to the Nexus owners already imo.

Unless, of course, Verizon is purposefully stalling on the Nexus to make their Droid branding look better. And with the way they have treated the Nexus, it doesn’t seem to be too much of a stretch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

hey guys, what a  941 error ? i get it everytime I try to update google +

  • RedPandaAlex

Not surprised. Moto was one of the first to update their flagship u.s. phones to gingerbread too. I knew they couldn’t be stupid enough to leave their phones behind for too long. But don’t get me wrong they can be pretty stupid

  • MKader17

I’m really not convinced that this is true. I just don’t see Verizon not leaking anything and then BB drops the news less than a week before it happens.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

just hopping i can return a nexus a week ( on my 4th ) till the S3 comes out, id take it sight unseen over this turkey

    • KaseyLa2da

I too hope that you can return your Nexus.

  • djkoz78

Apparently I came into a my penis is bigger than your Droid convo. Who cares who’s phone is technically better? I am not going to hold my breath with this. VZW sucks when it comes to updates. I hope that I am so wrong, but I doubt it. Oh & my Rezound has the biggest penis of all! Muah ha ha haw suckers.

    • KaseyLa2da

I agree. I own a GNex, but I am always happy with the lack of Rezound owners shooting their mouths off. Y’all just lay back and enjoy your sick phone and let Moto/Sammy fans duke it out over nothing.

      • http://www.elementary-project.com Kevin McDole

        Exactly.

  • Darthseph23

Hopefully, this allows for developers to fix the bugs in their builds.  I enjoy Axi0m rom of AOKP far too much now to think I’ll switch back, provided the issues get solved with official files rolled in.

    Good to hear though.

    • http://twitter.com/bboyairwreck Eric Chee

yeah AXI0M is great on the bionic too! never went back

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Travis-Royer/100000358962998 Travis Royer

Woot!! My Rezound gets ICS update, AND our adoption finalization happens on the 6th! Frak yes!

    • tjmonkey15

The question is, which one excites you more?

      • Benjamin Landwehr

Haha!  This made me laugh for some reason.  Congrats on the adoption BTW, Travis.  I was adopted myself. :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Travis-Royer/100000358962998 Travis Royer

Hahaha!! The Adoption of course, the update is just…..Ice Cream on the Cake.

    • lilschil

Congrats, dude.  All the best to you and your growing family.  Something like that really puts things like .02 or .03 or .04 into perspective.

    • djkoz78

This is only a rumor as of yet. Nothing is official. So sorry to bring you down, but it’s better to get disappointed now & if it does start to roll out on the 6th then you get to be pleasantly surprised. Instead of soul crushing disappointed that VZW enjoys so much.

      • ABerry5

Agreed.. if owning an OG and DX taught me anything its a release date is leaked then the night of that day no update in sight.. then over the next couple of days come the flood of rumors that it bricked the test phones and was bugged.. fast forward 2 months and u finally get ur update

        • Droidfann

no reason for 4.0 to brick these phones since they have basically the same processors and a gig of ram, even the screen are somewhat close to each other. They Just had to figure out how to overlay the skins on them. Unless they’ll be throwing in a ton of bloatware. Thought they did a soak test first before a major update though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Travis-Royer/100000358962998 Travis Royer

        lol touche’

      • TC Infantino

LOL’d at the ‘soul crushing disappointment’

  • Taglogical

Yay, soak it in on the Razr for a change instead of the Bionic; release ICS for the Bionic when it’s TESTED AND READY – There is absolutely nothing the Bionic won’t do for me right now so I can wait : )

    • RoadsterHD1

      I completely agree…. !!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Beer_Man_Mike Michael Bassett

Bionic is also getting an update on the 4th, but not ICS. When updated you turn on your Bionic and it sends the nearest Verizon employee your location and they will show up an F U in the butt for an hour, after they’re done you say “thanks” and they leave.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

im getting my 4th nexus monday, so as you can guess, when they leave my house I walk funny for days

    • Mark Wilk

       You Arrogant Bastard!

    • RoadsterHD1

      Not Cool.

  • Rollercoasterguy

Some of you people sound like five-year-olds. Seriously, whining about a MINOR version of android? Gimme a break. Many people don’t even have 4.0

  • http://twitter.com/teardropcity teardropcity

I first saw this info tweeted by the Droid Guy, and have my doubts, but we did see leaked screenshots for a ICS razr build back in Feb, so it could be. Got my fingers crossed.

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

I do question this since there has been no mention of a soak test yet.

  • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Can’t believe that some of you Nexus owners are whining about this. You’ve had ICS from day one. You’re really complaining about 4.0.4? Root your dang phone and download a 4.0.4 rom. You’ve got an unskinned Nexus on Verizon, and you’re jealous of a blurred/sensed up phone?Gimme a break.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.cross1 Tony Cross

So where’s the Bionic update. It’s 90% the same as the RAZR so there shouldn’t be any hold up. Let’s see what happens now.

  • Liderc

Not nice to play April fools on the Non-Nexus users =P

  • @wade_county

Android is a complete utter mess. Skinned phones running a newer version of ICS. I thought that’s the whole purpose of owning a Nexus device, to get the latest and greatest? Now you have the Nexus on a bunch of carriers that their all different phones cause of the radios. How many ICS devices are out there officially? Oh, Jelly Bean is around the corner too.

    • Taglogical

No, the whole point of owning a Nexus is to aid developers in the development of software for the Android platform; alas, it’s a pretty crappy phone with 1 thing going for it: ICS. As soon as superior phones like the Rezound, RAZR/MAXX and Bionic get ICS, there would not be much point to getting a Nexus outside of software development.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

        yep

      • MKader17

Unless you want to consider that every Nexus owner is not stuck with whatever the manufacturer’s give them. ICS is great but there are a few key features that I get from ROM’s, good luck with that on Moto

I’m getting an entire days worth of usage while never turning off 4G or worrying to turn on wifi. I make calls all day without trouble on easily the best looking phone :) Not sure what makes it a crappy phone to you.

Oh yeah, and soft keys ROCK!!! It would be tough to trade those away, especially when they are so customizable.

        • Blackbullet4749

You are talking trash. Moto phones have plenty of roms available that change pretty much everything about the phone. Don’t talk about things you obviously know nothing about.

      • KaseyLa2da

        The phone ain’t crap, guy….

  • KrispyKrink

I’m getting the feeling Google and Verizon just don’t know WTF to do with the LTE Galaxy Nexus. Let it wither and die? Or just keep saying an update is “coming soon” for another 5 months?

  • SR

All you nexus people forget one thing…if the Razr does get this update it will more than likely be the last update for a looooong time.

    • Blackbullet4749

Doubt it, the Bionic has had pretty regular updates from moto so I would assume the Razr would as well.

  • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Just another reason I’m.glad I got the Nexus.

  • greenbacks

I would not trade my Gnex for any of these phones…

    • MotoRulz

Its far more likely that no one would trade one of these phones for your Gnex since it will be on an older version of ICS.. LOL LOL

      • Mustang5Oh

Weird…my GNex is on 4.0.4 and can be updated using AOSP source code with minimal work…your Moto do the same? :)

        • MotoRulz

Weird…my Rmaxx will be on 4.0.4 and will be updated using OTA with NO work…your Gnex do the same? :)

          • http://www.facebook.com/5.second.minute Kit Tihonovich

How long did it take you to get there, bro?
And when are you moto kids getting JellyBean?
            Oh…never?  Cool bro.  Cool.

          • MotoRulz

Lets see.. the Rmaxx has been out for about 2 mths and ICS will be here officially next week.. On the other hand the Gnex has been out for almost 4mths and it still drops calls has shity radios, speakers etc.. Ha Ha. So much for that pure google, unlocked, Nexus experience..

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506434126 Randy Luna

            gnex sux big time

          • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

You mean the phone that has already been running ICS for several months??? :)

          • David Hayden

So? My Rezound has had ICS ROMs available since early January.

          • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

So? My Next has had stock ICS since December.

          • ABerry5

this bickering an fanboyism within specific android phones is ridiculous.. especially to those of us who have been on the Verizon android train since the OG.. I guess its part of the evolution of android getting so massive as we predicted but still I cringe when I think about how DL is becoming closer and closer to engadget.. isn’t the reason most of us prefer android because of choice and openness? Why do android owners troll other android owners with different phones.. are all DL readers 15 years old now or something? anyway I’ve had s gnex since Jan ive never had s dropped call and don’t have problems with signal either.. I’m on my 1st too.. I will admit the speaker volume is very low but if an marketplace app can fix it then 4.0.4 will too…. but I find it ridiculous and moronic that other android owners are mimicking iOS trolls by using rumors/things they heard on the net/their own made up problems due to jealousy because a Verizon rep talked them into a razr when they went in the store for a gnex to troll other android phone owners

            Grow the fk up kids

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Graham-Cluck/1848256183 Graham Cluck

Agreed friend. I don’t get this either. The phone envy is just dumb. All of these devices (RAZR, MAXX, Rezound, and GNex) are great devices in their own right. Yes, they all have flaws here and there, but what phone doesn’t? My GNex signal is crap, and the battery life is atrocious, even with the extended battery, but still, I love the thing because of pure ICS, as well as other features, so I can deal. I like Moto too (yes, WITH Blur), having had the OG and Bionic. I’m seriously considering the Fighter if it has the Maxx battery and HD screen. They all have their pluses and minuses, but the bottom line it that they’re ALL ANDROID, which is the point, and why we’re here. What happened to the community mentality? Stop with the trolling, peeps. There is no one phone to rule them all, and certainly not the Nexus (like I said I own one and can speak from experience). Great device, but not the best, guys. Take it easy.

          • Stephen Morrison

Ha! He said never. Go tell all the dev’s out there that, “bro”.

        • Get A Life

These GNex fanboys are much worse than the ifan club. Makes me wanna vomit! Is it just me, but I didn’t think this post was about the GNex? I thought it said Razr, Razr Maxx and Rezound. Trolling anyone?

      • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

So your phone isn’t running ICS yet???

    • Taglogical

I in-fact, traded THREE Galaxy Nexi for the Bionic, because the Bionic is a superior phone. Have a nice day!

      • Bob Martin

wtf is a Bionic? Oh yea isn’t a bionic that overrated phone that was talked about for months and forgotten about in less then 2?

        • Keith Sumner

          Bionic is a great phone

          • RoadsterHD1

I agree, My BIONIC ROCKS!!! no issues, pure power and speed.

        • MotoRulz

Yet you still seem to remember it…

          • Benjamin Landwehr

How could you forget?  Just because it’s bad doesn’t mean it leaves your brain instantly after being over hyped since January.

      • Mustang5Oh

LMAO biggest moron of the year award!

        • Taglogical

You sure about that? I have used (THREE) Galaxy Nexus devices as my daily drivers for 13 days per device. I have used an HTC Rezound and Droid RAZR as my daily drivers for 13 days each as well.

I went BACK to the Bionic, as empirical evidence points to the Bionic being a superior device (after the 2 updates) in almost every way; it has a better +/- ratio than the aforementioned phones.  I’m not talking as a fanboi nor am I mis-informed or uneducated as you so hastily accused; I have USED all of these phones as my daily drivers… I gave that Samsung garbage three chances to not be… well a Samsung as it turns out.

          • Mustang5Oh

Nothing you have stated proves it better than the Nexus. All you say is you used 3 of them. The Bionic screen is reason enough to never own one.

          • Taglogical

I don’t have all day to laundry list the things that suck about those phones. Suffice it to say, I have used them and I have returned them.

Comparing the screen’s is subjective. The Nexus has a ‘better’ resolution; I say this because I would never, ever want 1920×1080 on a screen 5 inches big; everything would be too small and the hardware would have to work much harder to drive that res = lower performace for something you’re going to have to zoom-in on anyway. It would be ‘okay’ for videos (as long as they weren’t subtitled) – So the Nexus is arguably pushing how high (720) I ever want resolution to be on such a small screen and given the mobile hardware that has to push it.

Nexus is OLED, which produces black well, and does nothing else well. No amount of calibration can make OLED display colors display as accurately as LCD.  No amount of calibration can make the OLED visible in sunlight. By the same token, the Bionic has the absolute most visible display of any mobile device I have ever used. Motorola has released updates for the Bionic which addressed color calibration, contrast and ghosting issues, leaving a beautiful screen that I am more happy with vs the Nexus/Razr devices.

What did I just say you ask? Simply, the Bionic has a better screen than the Nexus imo.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

The Bionic does NOT have a better screen than the Nexus or the Rezound.  If you honestly believe that, enjoy your Bionic, but stop stating such an idiotic comment as fact.

          • snowblind64

Maybe he has poor vision. I had the Bionic for three months and the screen is garbage. The Nexus’ screen while not perfect is an amazing display. Only two things that are good about it, outdoor visibility is great, and battery savings due to the white sub-pixel being added.

          • Taglogical

I honestly know that (the Bionic has a better screen than the Nexus and the Rezound). The Rezound has a ‘better’ screen than the Nexus too; the Rezound is not as visible outdoors as the Bionic, however, and costs the Rezound horse-power and battery life, which is why the Bionic gets the nod; it’s res is a sweet-spot for such a small screen. The Bionic’s screen is not the same today as it was when DL reviewed it; Moto has calibrated it via updates.

These are mobile devices, and must be usable when I am… mobile.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Graham-Cluck/1848256183 Graham Cluck

Sorry man, that’s a bad argument. I loved my Bionic. Only reason I gave it up is my brother busted his OG. Yeah the camera sucked balls, but never have I had better call quality. Battery life was quite good too which was a surprise. And Blur really does not deserve the hate it gets. Ever use TouchWiz? Yikes. We don’t all by smartphones for screens friend. The only purpose an badass screen serves is for lots of video watching. If that’s your thing, get a Rezound or Nexus, but don’t blindly hate on a perfectly good phone that didn’t get the love it deserved. And yes, I own a GNex, but it is NOT the be all, end all of Android phones. Sorry, not with that battery life and signal quality. Great phone otherwise though, due to the software.

          • http://twitter.com/QSMinSD Q

Bionic is a good device.  I had one.  I had no qualms about giving mine to my girlfiend and upgrading to the Nexus.  When I grab her phone, I never think to myself, “Oh man I should have kept this one”

If its 4.0.4 there will likely be a few pissed off Gnex owners out there.. Just sayin

    • MooleyBooleyTroll

VZW GNex users where told that updates wouldn’t come as fast as they thought since Verizon likes to approve “ALL” updates first. They just chose to ignore it.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I mean even if… the rumored version for the VZW nexus is 4.0.5

  • Boblank84

if this is true i would think there would be some leeks out by now.  it seems in the past at least for moto you see a leak a few month before ota…

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

    Time to cheesecake I guess…

My Bionic and LTE Xoom are snarling at their maker.

    • T Hall

      Same here!

Happy birthday to me April 4th lol

  • Jer85008

Very possible, especially seeing how close the leaked ICS version for the Rezound was to being a viable daily driver. Hopefully they worked the battery bug out and this is true.

So these phones will be running a newer version of android than my verizon nexus? great!!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Yeah basically.

      • Greg H

I still love my Gnex but this update process is kinda ridiculous! I remember when my OG received updates almost immediately after the Nexus One back in the day…  sometimes i miss my og

        • 2001400ex

You are delusional. You don’t remember the fury over waiting 2 months for 2.1? Then another few months for 2.2? Man the villages were being burned back then. Nothing like gingerbread for the thunderbolt, but they weren’t timely.

          • Greg H

Hmmm maybe I bought my OG a little later then.  My apologies, however, it was still lucky to get updates a little more quickly than this flagship, but a lot luckier than most of the phones getting slow updates today.  Not trying to cause trouble. Both phones are great IMO.

      • Droidzilla

Are the x.0.x versions really releases? I thought those third-tier numbers were for device specific releases, so this wouldn’t really mean us RAZR owners are on a newer release than you GNex guys. If it were 4.1.0, that would be another thing. Or am I off base on this?

    • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Newer version? Did I miss something?

Will they be getting 4.0.4 while all of us Nexus LTE users are still running 4.0.2?

4.0.4 just came out. They’re probably building on an older version so doubtful.

    Rezound Maybe…

    Razr…lol maybe not so much…

Glad I left the Bionic, it would probably wouldn’t have seen it till the end of the world.

      December 2012?

I really hope for your sake that you don’t believe that stupid “prophecy” that you obviously don’t even understand.

If you account for the fact that the Mayans didn’t have Leap Years, that time has already passed. Also, if you account for the fact that the Mayans didn’t see the Spanish coming, their track record for predicting future events is pretty poor. Also, if you account for the fact that the Mayan calendar doesn’t say the world ends in 2012 but rather that they simply didn’t complete any dates passed that time, it’s all moot.

I’m sure he was just joking around. “Why so serious?”

        • Adamspencer89

lol way off topic. but your right. the calender doesnt say anything about the world ending. all it says is that the gods will return the last 2 or more scribes are gone with time. I guess the ironic thing about all this is the fact that how similar these moto rumors are to the myan rumors. if this keeps going people will go insane trying to crack the code. i believe moto is spending to much time on facebook asking what moto fans are doing/buying than actually working
