Chrome Beta for Android Released!

chrome for android

Chrome for Android literally just went live in the market all of 2 minutes ago. We haven’t even had a chance to play with it ourselves, so go grab it and come back for our reactions in a bit. So far, it is only available to Android 4.0 devices.

So far…Google Chrome for Android is pretty damn fast…I’m really liking it.

  • fury

Is anyone in America not finding it in the app store? I can’t find it. I’m Nexus and ICS…

    • Bifflet

i couldn’t either so i used DL’s market link to get it.

  • Anonymous

It also replaced chrome to phone as it has the functionality built in and in a much more user friendly way.

  • RadicalPie

All I am missing is quick controls and perhaps flash. However I would have to say I am impressed for beta.

  • Anonymous

Is it me or is the text much clearer than the default browser?

    • RadicalPie

The text is def more mobile friendly

  • Anonymous

    incredibly fast

  • angermeans

Wow! I’m loving it, what a great surprise. Very minimalistic (which is great) and lightweight. I already like it more than the stock browser on my Galaxy Nexus. I wonder if once this is released if it will take the place of the stock browser.

  • John

Fyi, when you’re in the tab preview page, move your device upright & back down slowly. Slick

    • RadicalPie

    •  Tab preview is by far the coolest thing about this… I could do that all day, it is BEAUTIFUL!

      • Obi_Shwan

        Exactly what I was thinking.

    • Anonymous

run your finger up and down does the same effect i noticed.

    • Chris G

That is flipping brilliant. Thanks for pointing out.

    • If you do it quickly it makes it do a flip 🙂

      • John

I keep trying. It  only lets me do it so quick

        • Use yo fangers.

          • John

? I’m talking about the front flip it does. Not the side flipping/swiping

          • Wait. What? You knew about the flip?

          • John

          • Rofl copter.

          • John

    ICS only 🙁

  • Fury

I have ICS on my nexus and its not in the app store for me.

    • It wouldn’t be in Apple’s App Store, it’s only available in the Android Market.

      • Usurper

I’m pretty sure he was using ‘app store’ as a generic term for the android market, not referring to Apples app store. What are you, the android police? lol

        •  Careful now, knowing Keith here, he’s going to go all gonzo on your lack of an apostrophe in “Apples….”.  He is more than the Android police, he is the SS, the gestapo.    He is Keith Sumner, Android Nazi.

      •  Way to be condescending on the grounds of semantics Keith!

    • PC_Tool

Use the direct link.  It’s not searchable yet.

  • Lito31

    This also needs quick controls

    • Anonymous

Integration of the Quick Controls would be the best of both worlds!  Really hope they add them in the final release.

    • Kenneth Warness

For real. Until they add quick controls I am sticking with the stock browser.

    • I agree. but the bookmark syncing and tabs work way better in this browser. Plus, don’t forget that this means that updates to the browser can come at any time, not just with OS updates. Which is the best part about this.

  • tanknspank

“So far, it is only available to Android 4.0 devices. ”

Son of a biscuit eater! >.>

    • PC_Tool

“Son of a biscuit eater! >.>”

I am so stealing that line….

  • Mickey Bennet

I think the fact that it’s only ICS is total bull. A minuscule margin of devices have it. The RAZR should just update to ICS already. It’s taking far too long.

    • Matthew Rosidivito

It hasn’t even been on the market an hour. Give it some time. 4.0 is the current version of Android. Don’t be mad at Google for releasing software on the current OS, be mad at Moto for not upgrading yet.

    • ddevito

      it’s a Beta version.

    • Anonymous

you bought motorola a mistake ive made in the past they take foreeeevvvveerrr to update their devices i bought the galaxy nexus first updates!

  • Lito31

    Um needs flash support NOW

    • Anonymous

Its a beta, theres no doubt flash support will come eventually. Theres no need to be so demanding.

      • Anonymous

It’s not going to get Flash support. Adobe is dropping mobile Flash.

  • pilot25

not in the market for Nexus.  Not showing up.  Is this tablet only?

    • Josh Groff

Use the direct market link, it won’t be searchable for a little while.

  • Chris

This feature to view what tabs you have open on your desktop browser is fantastic.

    • Anonymous

it even says that “it’s pretty awesome” haha. just having this feature is the reason this is going to replace the stock ics broswer for me. SWEET

    • RadicalPie

you can also view tabs that you have open on any device with it. EX- my xoom shows my desktop and galaxy nexus tabs

  • HerroMoto

Why don’t these stock google browsers have tabs!? This is the number one reason why I do not use the stock browsers on android phones. I like the quick toggle, but it would be nice if it kept the web address at the top as well. I will probably just stick to using Dolphin. Wish they updated Dolphin Mini more for ICS though.

    • Anonymous

they do have tabs…. ?  you mean ones that you slide the page left or right and it opens a list of tabs on the side or something?  i like those interfaces much better, but there are still tabs in the stock browsers.

      • HerroMoto

I meant like on the top of the screen. Swiping is pretty convenient but for some reason I really like to have visible tabs at the top of my screen.

        • Anonymous

well then i definitely agree.  it takes way too long to do anything with the tabs on the stock browser.

    • RadicalPie

If you start on the outter edge of the screen and swipe to the left or right it will bring up those tabs… very nice plus has a slick all tabs preview screen.

    • M.Slab

The ability to flick from tab to tab instead of using up limited screen space is a far better implementation in my opinion.

    • Scott Souder

I hate when the tabs show. I quit using Dolphin cause it’s cluttered. If you want quick toggle, the labs option in Honeycomb and ICS allow you to switch between tabs rapidly with the flip of your thumb along the right side of the screen.

  • Eyeymnepo

i am now swollen and blue balled.

  •  Finally! — Glad to see Google finally is making it available! Excited to try it out.

  • Josh Groff

    Download # 17 😉 Yay me.

  • Maui88

This is amazing! Switching tabs is so easy and fluid, just swipe left or right on the screen!

    • Josh Groff

Did you see how it brings up clickable items close together? I’m in love. 🙂

  • RadicalPie

  • Piotr G.

    Downloaded 😉

  • EC8CH

    Come to my Nexus beautiful

  • Anonymous

First impression: definitely not as smooth as native ICS browser. Not even quite as smooth as the honeycomb browser was.

    • Anonymous

I have the opposite experience so far.

  • Fg2srt4

AHHH….You can instantly view tabs from your PC chrome on your android chrome! and the window previews are awesome (like stock ICS but better)

  • Can someone download it and upload the APK?

  • Ics only o well I’ll be testing you later today as soon as my g-nex hits.

  • Evileclipse

Bummer! Only available for people on ics.

  • This is pretty awesome. The sync the tabs to chrome on the desktop is awesome!

  • That’s nice and all, but why wasn’t this already built into the Android OS already?

  • Anonymous

I need this on my GT 10.1 ASAP

  • Anonymous

    No gingerbread love? Really?

    • Josh Groff

      All ICS I’m assuming.

    • Nexussss

      Any device that runs 4.0+

  • gdi, reall 4.0 and up?

  • Anonymous

Can only download it on my AOKP Touchpad. ICS only?

    • Josh Groff

Yep. 😉 Another reason to love my Sensation.

  • Shaunsr8705

    only for ICS

  • Cldstl76

    Blah only available for 4.0

  • Fg2srt4

    Requires android 4.0 and up

  • Askjfcnwiben

    Holy crap on a crapstick!

  • Anonymous

No Flash support, but slick otherwise.  And ICS only.

  • Anonymous

Will download it and try it out.

  • not supported on DX

  • John

    Oh HELL yes.

  • Nexussss

If this goes well it should just replace the stock browser

    • Mtaylor924

Yes, Google needs to eliminate duplication of apps for Android!  Replace stock browser with Chrome, replace stock music app with Google Music app, etc.

      • Anonymous

The stock music app is replaced with Google Music in ICS

      • Anonymous

i agree, but then the manufacturers would butcher it and call it “Internet” or something.  at least this way it can be downloaded intact.  i’m torn.

        • Anonymous

I would think the opposite.  Once it is branded Chrome they would not be able to touch it like the other Google branded components.

          • Anonymous

aaah good call, i didn’t think of it like that.  that would indeed be awesome.

    • Anonymous

      Definitely where it’s headed.

  • Anonymous

    Chrome only loves ICS…

  • cblair

    4.0 only. …………….. -____________________-

  • not compatible with Droid Bionic

  • Derek Stiles

Playing with it and it is awesome.

  • Van Hicks, Jr

Only for ICS, FAIL!!!! Now I am sad.

    • I don’t see how the million people below you didn’t see you complaining about it being ICS only. We get it people, upgrade.

      • Darthseph23

There is a single device that actually is running 4.0 / ICS stock right now.  Get off the high horse telling people to upgrade. Not everyone can afford the Galaxy Nexus or likes the Galaxy Nexus.

I will agree with this… MAYBE people should read the damn article.  Kellex points it out right there.  Bitching that it doesn’t work on your device because your device doesn’t meet the requirements is superbly stupid.

        • The Transformer prime got an official ICS release too

    • it’s a beta, not a final product

      • Van Hicks, Jr

        Captain obvious to the rescue!!

        • Honestly, YOU were the captain obvious, so you are the one who appeared foolish and misinformed, thus why he commented on you in the first place.

          • Van Hicks, Jr

Maybe I saved some people some time from having to go through a few click and finding out the way I did. 😛

          • Anonymous

People who can’t read a 2 sentence article probably can’t be saved.

          •  …or, maybe it’s just a matter of being a juvenile attention whore who rarely misses an opportunity — no matter how tenuous or pathetic — to keep his name before the public? 🙂

Chrome looks slick as hell….but what’s even more of a fail is the utter lack of ICS devices on the market or even firmly announced on the horizon.   The RAZR “developer edition” should have been launched with stock ICS to hold everyone over until Moto gets Blur atop ICS.

When on earth are we going to have a new superphone with a 4.5″+ 720p screen AND expandable storage running ICS out of the box?  I am so tired of seeing mildly refreshed Gingerbread phones (Droid 4, RAZR MAXX, endless SGS II variants).   Also disappointing is the lack of ICS updates to the various HC tablets out there.  There is no carrier certification foolishness to deal with so why such a huge delay?  I would have thought that the OG Transformer, the Iconia A500 and maybe the Thrive would all have received ICS officially by now.
