Quick Hands-on Gallery: Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus – Extended Battery, GSM Comparisons, and More

galaxy nexus lte gsm

We finally have the Verizon 4G LTE Galaxy Nexus in hand and the “how to” videos of fun are already processing. But before we get to those, we thought we would toss out a glamour photo shoot of the device, since it is just so beautiful. And for the heck of it, we compared it to the GSM version, which as you can see from the pictures is basically identical. The icon for the lock switch is slightly different and it’s about .54mm thicker – other than that, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them.

After that, we took some shots of the device with the extended battery inside. All I can say, is you may as well pick one up since it adds almost zero thickness to the phone, but could get you another hour or so of use out of it.

Oh, and we tried to swap the “Google” branded GSM back onto the LTE version and failed miserably. They are just slightly different, although with a little scraping, we may be able to get it. Will report back after a littler hackery.

Versus the GSM version:

With extended battery:

Pickup any accessories? Extended battery a must have?

  • Brgulker

I picked up the extended batterry. Looks and feels great. Definitely worth it.

  • Anonymous

Are any of the docks available?

  • Anonymous

Does the extended battery fit in the dock and car mount?

  • droid336

    does it have hdmi?

    • http://twitter.com/Peesashit Rohan Lal

No, but it has MHL, which uses the Micro USB port. You can buy a cable that connects from Micro USB to HDMI on Amazon or something.

  • Karma

The fact that is says Verizon on the back and the Google logo is know where to be found is just bad joo joo. I have a bad feeling about this device being on Verizon. Has anyone unlocked the bootloader yet?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bill-Smith/1423564580 Bill Smith

I just got back from Verizon with my brand new Galaxy Nexus.  I showed it off to the people at work and they all are marveling at how crisp and sharp the Screen is.  They were also blown away by the camera and how fast it takes pics.  Regarding the Pics, they are pretty clear and they don’t have that hue that people were talking about.  I also received my update while I was walking out of the store, so no two hour wait.

I bought the extended battery and it adds nothing to the phone.  So if you get this phone, spend the extra coin and get the extended battery.

Love the Ice Cream so far, more impressions later.

How much does the extended battery cost?

      • Porkweasel

I got mine on a 50% off promo for $25.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bill-Smith/1423564580 Bill Smith

I bought a cool looking blue rubber outer case to protect it, screen protector and the extended battery, so I got a 25% discount.  The battery cost me $40 after discount.  I kept my unlimited data plan and got my $50 new every 2 discount.

      • Anonymous

The extended battery was $49.99. It definitely doesn’t add much bulk at all.

      • Anonymous

My store (corporate store in Chippewa Falls, WI) had extended batteries for $49.99 but was selling them to day-one purchasers for 50% off.

  • Anonymous

Got mine right at 9am. In fact, I was the first one activated at the store in Chippewa Falls, WI (the sales people working there were as excited as we are, so they all cheered and clapped for me). Also had a nice conversation with a couple people waiting their turn about Droid-Life and what custom ROMs they were using on their particular phones. Who would have thought I’d run into two other Android-hacking nerds in rural Wisconsin.

Anyway, I’m loving this phone so far. But I’m coming from an OG, so it’s like night and day. Heck, this is the first phone where running a live wallpaper doesn’t slow my phone down to a crawl.

Oh, and if you happen to live in the midwest, that promo that was mentioned a week or so ago ($100 off) actually works. I never got the flyer, so while sitting in my car in the parking lot I called *611 and asked about the 3G to 4G $100 off device promo going on. The very nice and helpful lady I spoke to hadn’t heard of it, but all it took was 10 seconds of searching and there it was. She applied it to my line and said if the store associates had any issues they should call and it would be taken care of. The sales guy needed his manager to override the system (which she was happy to do), but in the end I got my Nexus for $199.

    • Whats_shakin_

I’m in Missouri and called and asked for the same thing and she looked and stated that it is only available for the Chicago district. Oh well, thanks for posting though. It was worth a shot.

      • Anonymous

Funny. I wouldn’t say I live in the Chicago district. I live in Western Wisconsin – an hour and a half from Minneapolis and nearly six hours from Chicago. I guess for Verizon I’m close enough.

    • Anonymous

The local store I got mine from couldn’t get the $100 off code to work right, even after Customer support confirmed it was valid for me.. the store manager wasn’t in yet, so the asst mgr put 2x $50 discounts (store discretion discounts) on the order to offset it. (1 per phone)

Wound up walking outta there with 2 Nexus, 2 car mounts, 2 extended batteries, and 2 sets of screen protectors for a little over $500 :) (note, I also had a $50 NE2 discount, and the Living Social thing too)

    • Shaun Ober

I got the promo in the mail and mine was only for $50, wonder if its because i get an automatic $50 when I upgrade.

  • Booboolala2000

Even though there may be issues with battery swapping and nfc, i got the extra battery cahrger. And a simple blue silicon gel case for now. Car charger is getting mailed to me and the screen is awesome.

  • http://twitter.com/pbolton70 Paul Bolton

I received the OTA update on the way home from the Verizon store. I have noticed I do get alot lower signal strength then my thunderbolt and even drop to 3G in areas where my thunderbolt was showing full bars. I also show one or two bars where my wife’s Droid charge has full bars as well. I am wondering if this is going to be a problem?

    • Samsung_bad_signal

Samsung has always been known for poor signal quality.  Look online at forums on the Samsung Fascinate for Verizon.
Good luck trying to receive or make a call…

      • Anonymous

lol i have told these geeks about Samsung, but they do not listen.

        • napes

We get it, you don’t like Samsung products.  We don’t care.  Go away now…kthxbye.

Well, for your information turd, the GS2 is my second best device right now. You go back to Arkansas and stop trolling.

hey dick licker j_mcclane wants to have anal sex with you tonight when your dad is finished raping you.

          • Guest

he’s a loser faggitt that was raped by his father.  now he likes to run around and suck cock and slurp cum!!

        • Guest1

hey faggitt your dad is looking for you he want to rape you again!

    • Oksin

I’m surprised the Charge has full bars.

    • Jesus

I noticed this too. My Tbolt has worse signal than my Droid 1 and the Nexus is worse than the Tbolt. For example, there’s a buliding at work were my Droid 1 got an okay 3G signal, the Tbolt only got 1x and the Nexus gets no data.

      • sailor

My Droid Razr gets far better signal reception than my OG Droid.  Glad I didn’t wait for the Nexus.

        • Anonymous

We are on the same boat :) Razr and moto won again as usual.

          • Guest1

My gnex actually has better signal and is rendering in 4G faster then my “rented” razr.

      • Anonymous

What do you expect from Samsung. I have told you that they use weak radios lol.

        • Guest1

          ……

    • ctannerd

Wow, i just upgraded from a Droid Charge and i am expericing the same thing. I was wondering why my Charge had a better signal in comparison to the GNex in the same location. Well this really sucks! I hope this can be corrected with a future software update….

  • Anonymous

I would pay $50 for a legit Google branded battery cover that fits this.

    • J Robert Bonser

I’m sorry, but that is nuts.  Who the heck cares what the back cover of the phone says?

      • Anonymous

Okay maybe a little extreme, but I would be elated for Google to get the credit for this phone and not Verizon.

  • Anonymous

I was third in and first out at my store. Maintained unlimited data plan. Because of my corporate discount I was able to get the device for $250.

I almost offered everyone in the store 25% off of all accessories if the activation had taken any longer, though.

  • Anonymous

Congratulations to you all. I am glad you all finally received the device you desired. As a friendly note could we stop the hate on other phones. We don’t want to give any new comers the wrong or biased impression. Razr, Bionic, Rezound and GNex are all great devices…it depends on what you are looking for.

    • Anonymous

Agreed – we really want as many people on ICS (or one OS) as possible, right?. Would like to see Google help out OEMs with fragmentation issues better then they have in the past. Perhaps one major OS revision a year could help that.

      • Anonymous

Good luck receiving calls with your samsung’s weak radios lol.

      • CanThinkForMyself

This coming from you = irony.

        • Anonymous

well isn’t it true? Don’t we Android owners all want to be on the same OS? I’m not spreading love for the OEMs, but Google could alleviate some of the fragmentation issues with one major release a year, just saying…

    • Rezound_user

+1, minus the Bionic.  Also add Droid 4 to our list.

      • Sk102704

I’ll take the Bionic over the Rezound anyday.

        • Anonymous

I love HTC but I would take the Bionic over the Rezound too. I did actually. Droid 4 looks cool too.

      • George Davis

The Bionic is a terrific phone.  Especially now with the OTA update.

  • Anonymous

Sammy should have just made the extended battery standard

    • EC8CH

apparently the Korean version was packaged with both.

we just have to pay more for less here in the states.

  • Jmark

I can’t believe how happy everyone seems to be to pay $30-50 extra for a slightly larger battery that buys you maybe 1 hour more battery life. If it was me, I’d be mad that they didn’t just put in the right battery in the first place. If I’m paying $50 extra, I want a much bigger battery.

    • GNex_bat_rip_off

Exactly what I was thinking- now the phone is $350!

    • Porkweasel

The store I went to sold me one for $25.  Some special 50% off promo.  Well worth it then!

      • James

Still $25 more than what you should paid.

  • http://twitter.com/MrYizzo Michael Tucker

My OG Droid has given me approval to buy the G-Nex lol ” A new and better device is available now my time is up” lol sorry I’m hype bro….

  • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

I must wait a few more days before I can get mine. Also I’m still hoping I randomly get that $100 mailer.

    • Anonymous

Just call them and mention it, worked for me although it was only $50 since I had a way early upgrade.

  • Anonymous

Hey DL, IMO when you stack a phone with a small hump in the back against a curve screen it is really hard to see the thickness difference, especially in that last pic

  • PeterG123

This has probably been brought up, but in regards to the SIM, it is simply for the 4G service. Having a SIM card in the GNex allows the phone to connect to verizon’s 4G data towers. There is no GSM voice on the GNex so it wouldn’t work in Europe (for example).

  • http://twitter.com/pbolton70 Paul Bolton

No it is now a micro sim like in the galaxy tab 10.1 in

How is the battery life so far (I know hard to tell). This is the one thing that has stopped me from going out buying one already..

  • Anonymous

For you new folks coming into a 4G device (not just the Nexus). I just got a RAZR last week, (my choice, leave me alone for that) and I noticed that the  4G has been spotty over the past few days. It is not horrible but it was spotty in Phoenix and it has been a little worse here in Chicago over the past two days. If you just got your phone (especially those upgrading from the D1 or 3G device) and are noticing some 3G action coming in and out, do not fret, this has only been that way for the past couple days. Not sure why, but I am sure it is only temporary. I would suggest for anyone to get a 4G switch from the market and turn off your 4G when not using it. Switching between the two will kill your battery life and leave you with a bad experience. As a RAZR owner, I am happy for you folks that waited all this time and I hope it comes with everything you patiently waited for. (ok, who’s kidding who, here?) You guys were obnoxious and impatient as hell but I am still hoping that the device pans out and gives you a pre-Christmas smile. I think Kellex or TimO should write a piece helping some folks come into their first 4G devices. They are finicky battery hogs and some basic tips can take you a long way.

    • Porkweasel

I tried the Razr before bringing it back for the Nexus.  I couldn’t take a clear picture with it at all.  Wonder if anyone else has similar issues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=596642670 Aaron Victoriano

wow its practically the same not much difference from the extended bat to the normal one

  • Guest

Let the complaining of this phone begin…It’s either complain that it’s not out or complain that something isn’t working!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=641868416 Patrick Stinson

kellex, are you going to do a video walkthrough on unlocking?  I’m on a mac and having trouble with getting started, even following the directions that were posted in your “unlocking” post.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10600664 Eric Levine

Yeah, even if the written directions are perfect. Video walkthroughs are epic and a strong suit of DL. There doesn’t appear to be one online right now so you could get some serious hits on one if you’re first to do it.

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I’ve heard talk of a micro-sim.  Has Verizon gone to micro sim cards or will the one from my Thunderbolt fit?

    • Silveruberxeno

Micro-Sim for most newer stuff. Rezound is an exception, I think.

  • FortitudineVincimus

.54mm thicker in phones is the difference between a fat beotch and super model IMHO.

What is your hatred for this phone

          • Anonymous

People may think that I hate Samsung, but if i have to choose between HTC and Samsung i go with Samsung. I feel Samsung still playing games with their devices. They still are using the weak radios, plastic and bad speakers. Moto seems too improved on the display, camera etc. HTC is also improving with camera, sound quality etc. I hope that you know that the GS2 is my second best device right. Samsung did something good with that one even though the sound quality, radios and gps is not as good as the razor, but not as bad as other Samsung’s devices.

  • J RIDD

Where can we get the official accessories for the LTE version? The VZW site doesn’t have all of the docks and cases on their site yet, and if I just google search for them I see plenty, but how can I verify they will fit the LTE version?

  • Anonymous

I bought the car dock too. Problem is, they sold me the one for the Samsung Stratosphere and not the Galaxy Nexus. Guess that’s what I get for not double-checking Verizon’s sales associates.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

will the extended battery work with the cases verizon has?

    • Roshan John

      read the post dude

  • Nonya

For $50 the extended battery better do more than just give an additional hour or two.

    • Anonymous

I bought a extra battery for $30. Not the Extended not worth $50 for a couple of hours

    • FortitudineVincimus

It does.. it allows you to continue to use NFC :(

  • Anonymous

Does the care dock work with the extended battery in it?

  • djdsf

Is it unlocked? that is my main question. I want to buy one, and be able to use it around the world because I travel a lot, whch leads to my second question, does it have a sim card? I know Verizon used sim cards on the BlackBerry devices before, so that;s why I ask.

    • http://twitter.com/AthoraX athorax

This is a cdma phone, most the world uses GSM. So even though it has a sim, you can’t use it else where really

    • Anonymous

The Verizon version doesn’t have any GSM radios in it, so unless some other country uses the same LTE and CDMA bands as VZW, the no–it won’t work elsewhere. You’re better off getting the GSM version and switching to AT&T.

  • Ryanh

    Just picked mine up…..finally!

Then you just got pwnt by Verizon… When I get my phone if they try to raise my unlimited data price, or change it at all they will get a STFUGTFO immediately… The unlimited data plan is a 3g/4g plan so nothing should change.

Life is short if $250 wont take food off the table then do it and enjoy.

I got mine at letstalk.com with the $75VZN discount code. It came down to $145. But they will hold it for me and only ship it on 12/29 when my 2 year full upgrade eligibility quicks in. I offered to pay an extra fee to get it shipped sooner but the store rep didn’t go for it. For now, I’ll have to read your experience and hear how good it is :(

    • Anonymous

It might be too late now but you could try saying you got a flyer in the mail about $100 off a 3g to 4g phone upgrade, mention it expires 12/31/11. I was able to get $50 out of it.

    • http://twitter.com/Gastripod Gastripod

Confirmed. I did not receive the $100 coupon that was floating around for some in IL, but I had the $50 off. I also bought the extended battery for $25. They are doing some 50% off promo on it this week. The only thing I forgot to ask about was my phone insurance. I doubt it transferred over, but the sales rep didnt push it either. Truly, it was a painless experience. Took maybe 15 min.

  • JDizzle

Its just stupid why they didn’t just put the extended battery into this device in the first place.

  • Stillsimon1

Just got mine added the otter box to it…. makes it kinda big but not bad….the only thing in noticing is i am running 3g and one bar while my droid x used to have full bars.

    • JJ

did you do the update that they released? it’s suppose to help with the signal

      • Stillsimon1

yes and i think it went worse

  • Dfdf

Am I the only one who is dealing with painfully slow transfer speeds when trying to upload to the phone?  I am trying to put about 500mb of photos on there, and it is claiming that the transfer will take close to 4 hours.

    • http://twitter.com/jofficus44 Joseph Joffe

Didn’t a post mention that since there is no external sdcard, there is no mass usb storage? (hence the slowness???)

Does the GSM battery cover fit on the LTE version? (For those who would like to remove the branding :) )

    • Anonymous

no it doesn’t, it says this in the article.

    • EC8CH

Kellex…… you promised us this would be one of the first things remember???

      • EC8CH

Sorry, actually read the entire article now..

        /bumbed

    • James Friedman

No it says that in the article…

      • http://www.facebook.com/TreyMotes Trey Motes

I guess the “…” is to imply that you think I’m an idiot?

        • U_an_idiot_bro

          Good catch…idiot

        • Brian Mejia

One could infer that from his use of ellipsis…

He might also be questioning your eyesight, or your reading abilities, or your attentiveness. More than likely he thinks you’re an idiot, though.

  • Dan

Got a 2nd battery for free when I bought mine

    • Roshan John

      with who? where?!

      • Dan

We have a discount through our employer and I think it was an upgrade ‘promotion’. Basically they give you $30 credit to use for accessories, so I used it on a spare battery/standalone charger hence free

  • Rick

Bought the car dock from VZW and was disappointment that it was not the same as the GSM car dock we saw.

    • A G

So will the GSM car dock work with our version then?

      • Anonymous

Don’t know. Need someone to test. I really hope it does.

        • http://twitter.com/bstag black stag

          yes it does. :>

          • Anonymous

Sweet, if you actually tested it.

    • Anonymous

How is it different than the GSM car dock? Does it still have the aux/line out at the base of the mount?

      • EC8CH

No, it’s a hunk of plastic.

      • Anonymous

No. No usb/no aux. The “dock” is a joke.

      • Anonymous

Nope, manual wire connection, not worth the $39.99 at all

    • EC8CH

      Return it!

      You got scammed by VZW.

Their car dock is a joke.  Wait till we get a fully functional version like the GSM ones.

      • Anonymous

I was thinking of getting one thanks man :), I have a friend that works for Adobe will check to see if he can order the G Nex as well. lol They get Verizon devices too not sure about his corporate policies

    • http://profiles.google.com/gorgio1 Alex G

hows it diffrent looks the same on vzw website…?

      • EC8CH

The one VZW sells doesn’t use the dock pins on the nexus.  The dock itself doesn’t have usb or audio ports like the real GSM dock.  The VZW one is just a hunk of plastic so you have to plug all of the connections directly into the phone.

        Repeat… DO NOT BUY!

        • Anonymous

Too late for me. I will definitely be returning it.

      • Anonymous

No contacts for charging, and no charging at all actually, its just a mount, nothing more. There’s people on the forums online that are taking the plunge and getting a GSM one to see if it fits the LTE version.

        • http://profiles.google.com/gorgio1 Alex G

omg that is retarded im glad my store did not have them yet once we figure out if the gsm one work i will def be getting one Thanks

          • Anonymous

The Multimedia Station will be out in January according to the Verizon store I was at, so maybe more premium accessories will be out then, if not on Samsung’s official site. Verizon gimps non-Motorola accessories to keep theres “premium”  They are in bed with them after all, i mean look at all the advertising they do for Motorola DROID’s and accessory support compared to other devices that deserve the same treatment….  also as far as the GSM car dock goes, i wouldn’t see why not, there isn’t a big difference in size for the LTE version.  but i think i’ll wait till either Kellex or another site compares the two, the dock is a complete sad excuse for an accessory, a gimped one at that…

btw, according to those GSM accessory previews SAMSUNG told the reviewer that the media dock would fit both versions, so hopefully the same is true for the car dock.

      • Anonymous

You have to manually plug in the usb cable to charge and plug in the 3.5mm to connect to the car everytime F ing time you dock it because all they have are holes where the ports are and the dock itself doesn’t any connections on it. So it’s just a $40 piece of plastic.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus out = Droid-Life site traffic plummets

    • NFans=iFans

Good, less trolls and fanboys maybe.  Site still blows though because Kellex is a douche.

      • Guest

        you mad bro??

  • Anonymous

I assume ours is the darker Nexus?

    • EC8CH

ours is the one with the crappy VZW branding on the back ;-)

      • Anonymous

Ah, I don’t have mine yet so i was just curious, i read some articles saying the LTE version was darker but i guess its more silver, oh well, it will be in my otterbox i just picked up anyway.

  • gregwilliams
