Sad Rumor of the Day: Galaxy Nexus Release Pushed to December, Still Undergoing Testing? (Updated)

I can tell that many of you follow our buddy @P3droid on Twitter and noticed his remarks this morning about the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon being bumped from November 21 to some time in December. While I can’t confirm from any of our normal sources that this is indeed the truth, I will say that a number of folks on Twitter also chimed in around the time of his tip to say something very similar. And to add to the possibility of this being true, let’s just say that I’ve seen that Verizon’s current in-store marketing calendars do not mention anything about the G-Nex for the rest of this month. That could mean a variety things, so I’ll withhold judgement.

Word on the street suggests that Big Red is in the middle of testing it and has found a couple of bugs that they need to see fixed before they can press “Go.” So let’s not rush out and buy pitchforks just yet, the testing of a device does take time. You would rather the phone be bug-free wouldn’t you?

But remember, this is all rumor, folks. We could still see it on the 21st, but from what we are hearing, December 1 isn’t out of the question.

Update:  Just heard from one of our regulars, and they have been told that the device has been pushed back. They are expecting the next round of testing to be completed by November 19. Not sure exactly what that means for November 21 release date.

Update 2:  The Android Site found this listing for the Galaxy S II Nexus Prime 4G Android Phone. Clearly just a placeholder, but we might as well report on it all at this point.

Update 3: A reddit user is claiming that the phone will be out this Friday, November 18. I would highly doubt that knowing what our source told us up above about the 19th being the next testing deadline, but hey, another rumor that you should probably know about. I would love for it to happen – no way to tell until we get to Friday though.

Update 4:  Our buddy @muffnman was on set at the taping of The Verge’s new show which had Matias Duarte on as a guest. According to Matias – during the show – the G-Nex is launching this month (November). He was pressed for a specific date, but would only go as far as saying “November.” I think we would all hope that this man knows what he is talking about as one of the architects of ICS and the experience on this phone.

*Note – Again, we flagged this as one massive rumor for a reason. We have no idea if the phone has been pushed to December or not, but we wanted to pass along some info that was tossed out by 3 or 4 people at or around the same exact time. If we call something a rumor, that means you should look at it as a rumor, not fact. You guys know that we just like to give you as much information as possible.

Cheers @mmolda, @mplacido9, Dominick, Tom, and James!

i’m starting to feel like I dont even want the phone anymore…

  • Charlie

First off, I know Verizon employees aren’t always the brightest of the bunch, but when I was in my local store the other day, they guy I was dealing with seemed like he knew what he was talking about.  We were talking about the Razr coming out so soon after the Bionic and then I mentioned the Galaxy Nexus.

He immediately knew what I was talking about and then mentioned that he “hoped it would be out by Christmas.”

Again, I know how VZW employees can be, but this guy at least seemed somewhat with it.  Sad.

  • Anonymous

Bionic part deux. It will release sometimes this summer.

    • Sporttster

That would utterly kill the phone. Other ones will be out sooner than that…

  • Anonymous

I knew that last week, nobody listened…

  • Alexander Garcia

I bet the Droid RAZR and the Rezound look awfully tempting now to those who seem to be just a bit tad impatient with the G-Nex at this point.

  • Anonymous

If there are bugs delaying the release of the phone, why haven’t we heard of these bugs from those with the phone in hand? I mean, P3Droid has had the phone for a while and wrote a pretty nice review of the device over the weekend and he didn’t say anything about bugs.

    • Anonymous

I think that Verizon is probably bloating the phone up

  • C-Law

wtf!? I hate you verizon. I’m sure this is just BS to help the RAZR.

  • roffl24

So google is giving away 10 phones in a contest that aren’t being released until at least december? Right.

“Word on the street suggests that Big Red is in the middle of testing it
and has found a couple of bugs that they need to see fixed before they
    can press “Go.”
Translation: “Verizon is still writing code to include all their bloatware on this device before they can release it to the public.”

  • Djlowproz

just might keep my og droid till my contract is up in jan 2012 smh….

  • fialcon

I went to a Verizon store today and was told that they have not received any emails or training for the Nexus. The rep also said that the phone will probably come out in December…

    • It’s funny how all of a sudden everyone’s saying “Yeah, I knew that”

  • Cam

Actually, aren’t the Google contest phones set to be sent to winners in December? Guess that date makes a little more sense now.

  • Eddi

Don’t jump your guns yet, P3droid seems to have connections but his predictions are sometimes way off base. there is quite a bit of circumstantial evidence the phone is coming out very soon. only time will tell.

  • Ray

Im so over this…Someone just call me when the phone is released

  • Anonymous

    Boinexus.. just sayin

    • joejoe509

Bionexus you mean? Yeah it’s getting that way… Yeesh.

  • Jason Purp

Maybe all of the other people are just saying what P3 is saying because they trust him enough? And maybe P3 is wrong?

I don’t know. But I want this damn phone already.

  • I may have to settle for the Razr.  The G-Nex was a real dream come true. Guess thats just a dream!

  • DroidzFX

cant see any damn comments. Screw you disqus

  • John

So…the day after the RAZR gets ICS?

  • I’m getting so tired of this SH*T

  • Charles Blackmon

Well I’m going to look at a Razar, maybe I can just return it when the G Nex comes out

    • Eddi

if you buy a razr, vzw wins. teach them a lesson with your wallet, nexus or bust.

      • Charles Blackmon

        good point

  • you guys/gals see that animated cartoon regarding guy wanting an iphone.
vz:yes im sorry its delayed we are having connection issues
us: you mean like both the new moto devices
vz: oh yes just like that
us: than why did they get released
    vz:they are motorola
us: yeah but they had the same problem so why were they released
vz: well you know they are motorola
us: yes i understand but why did you release phones with a problem but than hold up another phone with the same problem
vz: oh ok i understand..they are motorola

    • This was a waste of my reading time thanks

  • Anonymous

Release the phone then fix the bugs, is that not standard practice.  How bad can they be anyway.

    • joejoe509

Unless they are massive bugs. I agree. Just release it. I can deal with minor bugs or even minor freezes. It’s got a removable battery, right RAZR owners? 😉 Just playin’

  • Anonymous

    Poopy pants.

  • Eric Payne

Hold me, I think I am going to cry 🙁

  • I’m starting to get impatient with this. The Razr is starting to look better to me

    • joejoe509

That’s what Verizon is hoping you’d say. Somewhere a CEO is cackling with an evil laugh.

  • Anonymous

An office of apple users cheers….while an office of android nerds makes nooses to hang themselves….while the ones that picked up the RAZR, BIONIC, Rezound, etc. say……meh

  • Sheesh Man

WTF!!! they had plenty of time with the phone. this thing has been in rumors for almost a year like the Bionic. release the phone. with all of this testing Verizon does, you’d think every phone would be perfect when it released.

  • Anonymous

Given how many bugs (I like to call them quirks) I deal with every day trying to run umpteen different ROMs on my OG, I just want the damn thing now.

  • Anonymous

It can’t be much more buggy than my OG Droid.  Just release the phone and update it later.  I don’t want to wait for the phone to be obsolete to get it.

  • Anonymous

For anyone that ever owned a BB storm, I am in support of delaying it until it is good.  They pushed that phone out in a response to the iPhone and contributed to the downfall of BB.  Hopefully they are actually fixing things and not just positionining it away from the RAZR and Rezound.

    • Sheesh Man

RIM contributed to the downfall of BB. they just refused to be innovators anymore. They had a brand new phone with subpar technology especially for timeline and an OS that was basically the same outdated version that was nowhere near optimized for the phone.

they could have tested the Storm for years and it wouldn’t have mattered. I have one and after a thousand patches and updates it still doesn’t hold up as a basic phone with decent battery life. its not even LTE.

the Nexus isn’t like the Storm. it’s built off of proven hardware architecture and an updated OS. i believe this is why they played it so cautious with the hardware.

  • Wait… how does P3Droid (no hate) get a Nexus that seems to work perfectly on Verizon weeks before anything and the rest of the world has to wait now. ?

    • Anonymous

plus he got multiple ones so that each of team black hat could have one.

      • oh that I did not know of.  Hmmm.. strange

  • Verizon definition of exclusive: We will have it AFTER everyone else

    • joejoe509

Lol. Made me laugh. And then cry.

  • gadgetryan

Well if it is not the 21st then I can at least go and enjoy my vacation! I’ve been hoarding the money to upgrade to this phone, but if it DOES come in Dec, then I can spend that money on Black Friday!! Lol!!

    • joejoe509

      Ditto. Vacation starts this weekend.

  • chris

Who cares about this phone anymore, droid 4 will be out in december too now with the same specs and a keyboard (since all i do is text) plus a smaller screen so it doesnt feel like i have a tablet in my pocket

    • Anonymous

those who want stock android and not moto blur.

      • …will get the European GSM version of DROID4 with its unlockable bootloader.

A QWERTY slider by Motorola with nice tech specs and an unlockable bootloader is exactly what I need.

      • STiK

        ICS looks like MotoBlur/WebOS mix!!

    • Dynaxicom

    • Anonymous

A nice 4g keyboard phone would be sweet

    • joejoe509

Those are two very different phones appealing to two very different consumers.

  • Jaime Ramirez

  • Bblackinc

If they push it back they could at least up some of the specs a little

    • Anonymous

    • joejoe509

Not needed. It’s fine the way it is. I heard the battery might be bigger than originally thought.

    • You don’t understand how any of this works do ya?

  • Some Random Dude

  • Galaxy Nexus. Brought to you by the Bionic.

  • Eric Hedden

Verizon is a bunch of asshats. Just release the damn phone already. Who cares if there are a couple bugs to fix… that’s what patches are for.

    • Anonymous

hell they released the thunderbolt with a ton of bugs and it only took them like a month to patch a quarter of them. With verizon if it doesn’t have bloat installed they dont care about it.

      • joejoe509

Except for the iPhone of course. They care about that phone a great deal. Took them 3 years to get it however…

But yeah… I think they are purposely delaying this phone to give the other phones a chance to make some money before launching this beauty on the world.

  • so….. by the time this thing actually comes out, the galaxy 3 will be out the month after with far better specs.

Seems like the bionic all over again… (Im hating this phone more and more each day)

    • Anonymous

I wish verizon would have just got the sgs2. That is the better phone and at least then we would have a phone and not get strung along.

      • MFG

        • Anonymous

uum ok if you say so. Better processor, pretty much only android phone that was praised so highly. Yeah the nexus has a better screen thats about it.

        • Anonymous

The SGS2 is better in almost every way over the GNex at its current specs.

      • EXACTLY!!!

The reason VZW didnt get the SGS2 was because we were getting the nexus, which based on everything I have seen… is an “upgraded” version of the GS2…. yet while the world is loving the GS2, we are sitting here waiting on this unicorn of a phone.

do they not realize that the longer they wait to release this phone, the crappier it gets by comparison??
I mean seriously, high-end android phones get released so frequently you really cant delay a month or so to release it!

      • joejoe509

I’m kinda glad we didn’t get the GSII. I like the looks of this phone WAY better. Personally the only thing the GSII has that’s possibly better is Exynos. Other than that, the GN is VERY similar specs wise.

  • NewONEplease

    wow disqus is having problems

    • MFG

I think it’s Droid-Life’s new layout. Disqus has been weird since.

  • Baker1015 Sb

So there is a bug and there are thousands of these phones in a warehouse somewhere. Are they going to open each one and fix it. No, they will fix it in an update. So it doesn’t really make sense that they would delay it for a bug that the will have to fix with a update that has to be installed on each phone.

    • Anonymous

I think “testing” is just an excuse they will use to delay it and try and get more razr’s and rezounds sold.

      • joejoe509

        Unfortunately… I agree.

      • Steve Blais

so true.. funny thing I almost bought a razr.. but when I looked at the status bar no signal.. I said to the rep hey whatsup with this do you have a working model I could see. He said NOPE.. I shrugged my shoulders and thought to myself maybe I should hold off until the Galaxy or the rezound.. yup thats what I am going to do. If Big red doesn’t have a razr working that doesn’t make my chances of getting a working razr too good .. ughh

        • Anonymous

I will stay away from moto until they get rid of blur or change their stance on bootloaders or atleast not encrypt them.

      • zein

Actually they didn’t use the word “testing” someone else did.  We don’t even know if this is true.

    • If the “Bug” has anything to do with their network. LOL it could be never released until VZW is “satisfied” we can’t “break” their network.

  • Anonymous

    I’m getting Bionic flashbacks -_-

    • joejoe509

      More like nightmares?

  • Anonymous

No. Unless it’s gonna brick, give me the phone now and an OTA update in a couple weeks. I can deal with a couple bugs if it means getting the phone this week instead of in a month. I’m tired of this crap from Verizon. They’ve screwed up so many big launches now it’s ridiculous. If I wasn’t so dead set on getting the Nexus I’d go ahead and get the Razr or Rezound…two phones that actually got out at least close to when they were supposed to.

    • I can’t wait to get this phone but you can’t say they screwed up the Nexus launch when they haven’t announced it yet. I hate Verizon.

  • Anonymous

Sadly, Apple has figured out how to launch a device much better than anyone else. Verizon/Google/Samsung has really missed a great opportunity here.

    • Well its pretty easy not science….announce the phone and when you announce it state the carriers, date, and price pretty damn simple to me….but Verizon has its own plan……

  • John Landgrave

Personally, I’m fine with a slightly bugged device, because people like P3Droid and the CM team are damned faster at fixing the general bugs than are Verizon’s people.

  • PSU_DI

Just give us the phone already, if there are bugs the devs in the android comunity with squash them for us, we don’t need VZW to do it for us.  More than likely VZW probably just realized the Bootloader was unlocked and was like well we can’t have that can we.

  • NewONEplease

HAHA!!! I don’t give a SH!T about this POS anyway weakA$$ pentile screen, no gorilla glass, no sim card slot and a embarrassing GPU to boot BLEH all coupled with a OS that was obviously super rushed and is full of BUGS. NO THANKS

    • joejoe509

Cool. So… what are you gonna buy instead? Cuz I don’t see a single phone on the current market that will satisfy you.

    • Guest

good.  now go the fuk away dikhead.

  • hatethanet

Would be surprised, considering they didn’t even have an LTE version to show off during the press conference.

    • Why would they? They were in china that does not use the lte…..you have to understand that thousands of people have this phone and are using it on Verizon with no problems and no major bugs….its just Verizon wanting to cash in on the rezound and rzor
