Samsung Nexus/DROID Prime Cruises Through Bluetooth SIG with a CDMA Radio

A Samsung device by the model number SCH-i515 found its way through Bluetooth SIG today, which just so happens to be the same model number rumored to be the DROID/Nexus Prime.  In the posting, we can see that the phone runs on CDMA networks and is also headed to North America.  One could easily assume then that we’ll see this device on Verizon, especially with the “SCH” in the model number which seems to be the three letter combo reserved specifically for Samsung devices on our favorite red carrier. (Charge is SCH-i510)

Who knows if it’s coming or not as a DROID or a Nexus device.  Our sources say they aren’t expecting this to be “DROID” branded, but at this point, it’s anyone’s guess.

Can someone explain this to me…
In this post: (8/25/11)  http://www.droid-life.com/2011/08/25/samsung-nexus-prime-receives-wifi-certification/  The Prime is referenced as Model # GT-I9250
But in this most recent post: (8/29/11) http://www.droid-life.com/2011/08/29/samsung-nexusdroid-prime-cruises-through-bluetooth-sig/    The Prime is referenced as model # SCH-i515I am not as saavy as some of y’all, but I don’t understand…

    • Dave

Interesting, no? As with previous models, SCH (at least in the US) is typically reserved for Samsung Verizon phones. It would seem there will be other variants outside of whatever Verizon might be getting.

Im worried that the jump from SCH-i510 to SCH-i515 is an indication of a refreshed Charge and nothing more. Certainly doesn’t seem enough jump in model number to justify the difference between the two devices…

no nexus for us, aint happening. Verizon will NOT give up their control over handsets in their line up. This will be either the Fascinate 2 or the Droid Charge 2. Lets keep it real folks, no reason to get our hopes up over rumors that have no chance of turning into reality. More touchwiz anyone??

    • jimbob

People said that same thing right before they got the iPhone.

      • Anonymous

iphone was simply a matter of time and money. Nexus Prime is a matter of carrier policy. If it does come to verizon I will be the first in line to throw down 600 for one, but I just don’t think its realistic to expect that to happen considering their history of bloatware and locking down every device that has ever been released since the OG. I hope it comes, but I have a feeling that if it does it will release in january like the original nexus, not fall. Lets wait and see! We might get lucky afterall.

I flipped through other pages about this phone, but it’s only BT details, no phone details. For all we know, this could be feature phone (not likely) but there’s nothing on theBT site to suggest that it is the Prime (Droid or Nexus)

I must express appreciation to you just for rescuing me from this type of matter. Right after checking throughout the internet and obtaining ideas which were not powerful, I figured my life was well over. Living minus the approaches to the problems you have resolved by way of your good posting is a crucial case, as well as the kind that might have negatively damaged my entire career if I hadn’t noticed your site. Your personal talents and kindness in taking care of a lot of things was vital. I am not sure what I would’ve done if I hadn’t discovered such a solution like this. I’m able to at this point relish my future. Thanks very much for your reliable and sensible guide. I will not think twice to suggest your web site to any person who should get counselling about this matter.

DROID Nexus Prime sounds good to me, the best of both worlds!

  • rrosotho

Stupid question but is this phone LTE? or not?  i see only CDMA radio does it mean only 3g?

    • Anonymous

Droid Charge was listed the same way.

      • rrosotho

        Appreciate that!

  • Anonymous

Why does it say there is no LTE?

    • Anonymous

The Droid Charge was listed exactly the same way.

      • Anonymous

        Sweet.

  • Anonymous

How about the Nexus DROID? That way, Verizon can have its circlejerk for the droid nomenclature and we can all still have a Nexus phone!

    • Anonymous

thats actually a pretty good idea… even if i think it was meant as a joke ;P

      • Anonymous

Facetious tone, sure, but the more I thought about it, the more that seemed to make sense to me. I kind of hope this is what happens now. And I called it here, so come Fall if I’m right, everyone owes me internets.

  • Sinofue

Are we sure this is LTE? CDMA sounds like 3G.

    • Anonymous

It needs to have 3g for if you go into a 3g area its not all LTE.

  • Anonymous

i completely agree. Verizon and moto took forever to release the bionic. They wanted it to be the best device for big red before the year ends. Prime and vigor will sell but not as much as the bionic :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MRXKXFO5F7NVWFJHNZFO7NEHVY Big R

Are you crazy?  The Bionic has nothing to offer that does not already exist on VZW except slow Dual Core + 4G LTE together.  If someone is stoopid enough to waste an upgrade for a Bionic, then live with your decision without complaints. For $300, I would wait to compare them side by side.  You have already waited too long for the Bionic.

      • Anonymous

no it has a dual core with a good processor omap not tegra. It also has webdock, zumocast hdmi mirror and the build quality of moto. What else do you want? Do you know that if you get the sammy 2 or nexus or droid prime, there will be more devices better than those. I will get the bionic and since i downgrade my contract from 900 minutes to 450, they gave me a one year contract. Therefore, i can upgrade October 28 of 2011 and then October 20 of 2012 :)

All LTE phones can do voice and data simultaneously. As I recall, data drops to 3G during a phone call.

  • http://twitter.com/NemaCystX NemaCystX

Except we also weren’t expecting the DROID Charge to be a DROID phone either, With the specs of Vigor and Prime, there both worthy of the name “DROID”

I’m finding it hard to see how Verizon is going to market this if it is a NEXUS phone though, because if they attach DROID to the name when most Android enthusiasts know what a NEXUS device would be if it were called “NEXUS Prime”  it’ll be interesting to see how Verizon markets it when the DROID name is attached to this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1156848303 David Hayden

      Droid Nexus.

  • Scott Hartman

I normally make similar arguments about the spacing of phone releases (that’s why I expected the original Bionic to get bumped for Targa…too crowded of a summer lineup and too close to Targa once the original Bionic couldn’t ship in Q2.  But…I’m not sure that the Bionic will get top billing for more than 30-45 days (which could still leave an October time frame open).  It may be the first phone to combine LTE and a dual core CPU, but it didn’t get to either first, and risks getting lost amid previous VZW dual core and LTE releases.  It will probably rapidly supplant the Charge and the Thunderbolt (especially if battery life is as good as is rumored), but it probably won’t be able to compete with the iP5 hype machine beyond us Android fans – Droid/Nexus Prime will, and Verizon seems to have a keen interest in stopping Apple from getting too much leverage over them.  So yeah, I could see Verizon putting the Droid label and a ton of marketing clout into this, even if they were eating their own a bit with regard to the Bionic.

All’s fair in love and smartphones after all…

i really hope this phone won’t be 4.5 inches. that’s way to big.

If you were to remove the buttons off the normal 4.3″ phones you could get the screen bigger without making the phone bigger right?

        • Anonymous

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_E6UNKOLSRDXXGIP77NMPHSALO4 Jaciel

It could become a DROID…remember the Incredible was changed so suddenly that the first batch of phones were shipped in their original box that said HTC Incredible, but later moved into a nice DROID box. I doubt it though. It wouldn’t be unlocked and bloatware free if it was a DROID.

  • Sporty

Well you also cant forget about the unknown LTE phone by samsung, were dose that fit in with verizon. Google could end up advertisering for the nexus prime and it get released in october, then verizon could end up adverting for the unknown LTE samsung and realease it near christmas under the name droid prime

  • Anonymous

The only reason I feel that this may end up being a Droid phone is so Verizon can lock it down. Jerry from Android Central made a great point during their last podcast. He basically said that Verizon getting a Nexus would be irresponsible on their part because of how easy it is to unlock the phone and then abuse the network through tethering. I understand that other phones on Verizon are unlocked, like the Droid Charge, but a Nexus phone would obviously sell way more and many people will look to getting some free tethering off 4G and would end up costing Verizon a whole bunch of money. At least with the Droid branding, Verizon has more control over the phone thus allowing them to prevent or at least make it harder for the phone to be unlocked.

But who the hell knows, its all rumors and speculation at this point. Just thought it was a really good point to keep in mind.

    • Anonymous

They could issue an update like the sprint nexus s got to make you pay for tethering. Also Verizon is making a killing they charge so much for data that they get really cheap so no its not because they would lose money its because they can rip you off and charge more for the same data.

    • Newton122189

This would have been the case before VZW transitioned to tiered data plans.  Now that it’s tiered, if people tether illegally then it’s no big deal because they will just go over their data cap and VZW will annihilate them with overage charges.

I’d like to point out that the LTE/CMDA/GSM chip is actually an LTE/W-CDMA/GSM chip, meaning it is not CDMA2000 (EVDO). W-CDMA is another name for UMTS aka GSM 3G.

    SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE.

That doesn’t mean the SCH-i515 isn’t a DROID Prime w/ CDMA and LTE radios for Verizon, it just doesn’t use the same radio chip as the LTE GS II.

    • Dave

Just wondering, whose bubble are you bursting? I’m not seeing anyone make the claim that this phone will have the same chip as what’s coming in the LTE GSII.

      • Anonymous

If I understand what he is saying correctly (and there is a chance that I don’t) – he is saying this is not a Verizon phone because it has GSM 3g chip and not the Verizon CDMA2000 3g chip.  That is my take anyway.

        • Dave

But the Bluetooth page does not indicate what chip it’s using outside of a reference to CDMA (unless he is replying/referring to someone/something else). Keep in mind that the Droid Charge (SCH-i510) has the same description as SCH-i515 in that it refers to CDMA.

      • http://fabdroid.com Andrew Xie

This article has since been edited ;)

Earlier, it was implying that the SCH-i515 contained this magical LTE/CDMA/GSM chip.

        • Dave

          Sneaky! Thanks for clarifying. =]

    • MAD MAX

I hate to break it to you, but the SCH-I515 is already in the Verizon data base.  From there, its just a matter of time for release date & official name.

I can wait. I am sick to death of stock Motorola bull crap. I hate my D3 with Blur. I soft bricked it after I rooted it and I don’t even care. My Liberty DX is far superior anyway. I disagree with your understanding of the nexus, hasn’t t mobile launched nexus phones? certainly the nexus one, and im fairly certain a few others. exclusive for months.

  • Tacoman

I’d bet money it’s going to be a DROID Prime.  Why the hell would Verizon use the Nexus name that is basically unknown?  Of course they are going to add this to their D line (haha…D line) with all the marketing behind it.  I’d guess a holiday release close to Christmas in order to not compete with Droid Bionic sales along with iphone 5 sales which are all coming out on Verizon in September/October…ish.

As much as I’d like to see a Nexus Prime, Verizon has never seen a Nexus and I don’t see anything appealing for Verizon by branding it that way.  (They only care about money, Verizon, and some more money).

Regardless I’m passing on the Bionic to see what’s up with this sexsay bish!

    • Jarred Sutherland

Yeah the Nexus line isn’t well known at all, hence the reason for the generally abysmal sales at other carriers. Verizon isn’t stupid, why in the world would they want a phone that won’t appeal to their general audience. Now tack the name “Droid” to it and it appeals to their general audience and still rocks. I’m thrilled to see what’s coming. This will be my next phone if it makes it to Big Red.

    • EC8CH

I really don’t think VZW cares too much how many Nexus Primes they would sell.  To them its all about getting subscriptions, so they don’t care which phone you pick so long as you sign a two year contract.  They would probably rather you buy a phone with all their crapware installed in the hope you’re stupid and you will pay for their services (which is why they put their marketing dollars behind the Bionic), but if they are smart they are looking at the Nexus Prime as a way to target potential customers looking for a Google Experience phone.

In my view it’s the manufacture (Samsung) that is taking a greater risk if the phone doesn’t sell well.  They are the one committing the resources.

  • http://twitter.com/moids Omid Mirshafiei

“Google and Verizon teaming up to launch a Nexus just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense – Verizon already has the DROID brand.”
Logic fail! What does “already” having the DROID brand have to do with another team up? Besides, why do you consider a Nexus phone to be a teamup between the carrier and Google–as if it were some sort of exclusive partnership–when Nexus phones have traditionally launched on MULTIPLE carriers?

Or do you mean the “Nexus” name is equivalent to “DROID” and thus Verizon doesn’t want to cannibalize DROID sales? If that’s what you mean, then the solution is easy: don’t dump the DROID campaign marketing $$$ behind the Nexus phone, but offer it with a tiny “Google experience phone” tagline and that’s it.

But a 4.5″ screen is stupid. If the chassis is narrower than the Thunderbolt, it might work. I bet the battery life will suck with that LTE and 4.5″ screen.

  • http://twitter.com/moids Omid Mirshafiei

As far as we know, the Bionic is getting the marketing budget from VZW this year.  The Vigor could get a huge bump from HTC and this Prime device could get one from maybe Google or Samsung.
