Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple, Will Remain on as Chairman of the Board

Talk about news that no one was expecting to see on a Wednesday…Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple, but would like to remain on as Chairman of the Board.  In a letter sent to the press, Jobs makes it clear that he can no longer meet the duties and “expectations” that come with being Apple’s CEO and has asked that the board turn over those duties to Tim Cook who is currently the COO.

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Shocking.  Whether you like Steve Jobs and Apple or not, this is massive news.  He doesn’t specifically bring up the health issues that have plagued him over the last year, but one would assume that those are the driving force behind this decision.  The dude has meant a lot to the world of tech, so while we bat for Team Android, we can admit that this is still a pretty sad day.

With that said, I can’t imagine that he won’t be leading the way in press conferences, product events, etc. for at least the time being.  Thoughts?

Don’t you have a Stevo poster to go pray to?

  • http://www.facebook.com/twpayne Wil Payne

Sure, I don’t like Apple, and I don’t own an Apple product.
But I would probably still be on some ruddy dumbphone if Steve Jobs didn’t change the way we think of smartphones. Heck, you look at Android prototypes, and you’ll find out Google wasn’t planning on making smartphones a ubiquitous tool. I wouldn’t have the Droid I have, the Zune I can’t live with, and the good collection of Apple stocks if not for Steve Jobs.

What would a world without Toy Story and the iPhone look like? It’s a world that runs on BlackBerry OS/WinMo 5 and frankly, kinda sucks.

Godspeed Apple, good luck Jobs, and Cook… drop the suits and focus on competing outside the courtroom.

    • Jam120992

Hope he can overcome his health issues and stay on with Apple, love him or hate him, he turned a floundering company into the greatest American success story of our generation. And for all the haters, go watch MegaMind, without a good aversary the fight is pointless! Maybe Tim Cook will ease up on the patent suits, who knows….

“Apple corporation joins millions of recession-era Americans suddenly finding themselves without Jobs.”

  • ChrisI

I respectfully request to be considered for the CEO position. I will even take a pay cut, and make only 600 bajillion dollars a year….far less than my competitors in the industry.

  • RW-1

    Sad.

His leaving as CEO doesn’t mean Android won the “War”, just that we lost a very worthy opponant to battle with.

My only comment on this would be something like:

“If only Jha would follow suit and leave Moto”

    • Anonymous

      OK seriously.

Apple isn’t going to die because of him leaving. (though its going down slowly)
I am sure all of Apple’s ideas haven’t all came from him.

      • Anonymous

Take a look of what Apple was like before Jobs came back and what it is today.  You can pretty much say that Steve’s leadership and vision 99.999% made that company what it is today.

The ignorance in the comments disgust’s me.  The man played a major role in our computers today.  If not for him, you may not be on this site at this moment. He left due to his sickness.  You are all horrible people to get enjoyment out of a man who has changed all our lives sickness.  It is even more ignorant to believe iOS will shrivel up and die, and Android will succeed even more. Just because Steve is leaving, that most deffinatly does not mean iOS will die, nor will the iPhone be discontinued.  If anything, it means it will thrive even more than it has, or it will go at the same pace it has been.

Okay, I don’t believe Steve did any of those things as a single person, and how does any of that directly affect your life?

        • Anonymous

Really?  You don’t believe Jobs, the CEO of the company in question who makes all the decisions and is known for pushing his ideals and opinions, is responsible for his own company’s actions?  …..really?

How do you think it affects me.  You know how marketing works right?  You know short of becoming a hermit I have to deal and interact with people on a daily basis right?  Maybe a better question for you is, how do you think a pervasive company, one of the biggest and richest in the world, with massive influence in the tech space, consumer mindset and media doesn’t affect my life, especially when they try to bar the devices I prefer from being sold and remove my options in favor of a monopoly.

So how does buying out small developing companies out to take their ideas and then canning them because they don’t want competition sound? Please … as much as I love my OG Droid and wouldn’t trade it in for an Apple phone, this is crazy. Almost sounds like our affiliation with a company (google vs. apple) defines who we are. It’s a freakin phone and some dumb os that we can live with or without. The fact that you guys talk about it this much shows that there is some sort of interest in this person. Negative attention is still attention people.

you are an idiot. apple’s marketing is destroying your life? you are mad because apple uses the legal system to prevent their intellectual property from being infringed upon? you are mad because the websites you go to write about apple? hopefully you reread all the shit that comes out of your head when you turn 18.

          • EC8CH

“you are mad because apple uses the legal system to prevent their intellectual property from being infringed upon?”
            ^ yes

They are abusing a broken patent system.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Bernard/100001785826703 Jeff Bernard

well vote for a candidate who shares your uninformed opinion on the patent system.

50000 patents to cover a single phone… yeah nothing wrong with that.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Bernard/100001785826703 Jeff Bernard
          • EC8CH

            Yep already read that.

Not sure an *pple centric blog on the internet is the only place to research when forming an opinion on the state of the patent system.

I tend to also rely on my own professional experience as well, and the fact is, too many overly general patent claims are approved which leads to excessive litigation.

Thanks for the smug attitude though… wouldn’t expect anything less from you.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeff-Bernard/100001785826703 Jeff Bernard

you have no professional experience on this matter, let’s be clear about that. this fact is apparent from your statements. Thisismynext.com is hardly an apple centric blog so lets get that out of the way as well. now with those two facts on the table the only logical conclusion is that you are completely talking out of your ass and therefore your opinions on this matter and all other matters will be immediately disregarded by me. thank you and have a nice day.

          • EC8CH

You know, your right…  I don’t know why I thought working over nine years as a design engineer in robotic machine automation has given me any first hand knowledge of the state of our patent system.  All that time I’ve spent filing for patents, responding to cease and desist letters, and researching patent claims for possible infringement really doesn’t give me anymore insight than someone who read an internet blog once.

And if you think Topolsky and old engadget editorial staff don’t have a biased view towards *pple… then you probably also believe Fox News is “fair and balanced”.

I used to think you were one of the smarter *pple trolls around these parts, but after this its pretty clear that any intelligence you do have is overshadowed by your arrogant prick attitude.

          • Anonymous

You’re a perfect example of the delusional morons I’m talking about. Why don’t you go get a tattoo on your face of Apple’s logo and save it for someone who cares.

          • Anonymous

I’m not going to insult you, like others have…but, you are way off base.  Apple innovation plays a huge role in the non-Apple branded consumer electronics that you enjoy today.  That’s reality.  Also, if you don’t want to buy from a company that has taken legal action on another company, you might as well stop buying stuff altogether.

          • Anonymous

Too bad his stepping down is a result of failing health.

Apple announces the iPhone, with than Google CEO there and on board of directors for Apple. They scrapped the original plans and went after the iPhone before it could take the Blackberry spot. It was a brilliant move, very brilliant move. They foresaw what the iPhone could become and outdone it in every way possible and pissed the hell out of Steve Jobs.

            That hasn’t been proven.

            And who knows.
Maybe HTC is getting near to winning that Apple lawsuit banning devices in america.
Or maybe the iPhone 5 is not as great as it should be and he’s running.

I doubt both of these but there are endless possibilities.

Possibly but like Lion said, everybody dies eventually.  Jobs is a douche, you won’t see me crying at his funeral.

Just like you won’t find me crying on yours either.

Oh another douche doesn’t care about me, I weep.

You may have had a few good points on these comments, and that can be respected in a constructive argument about something, but your tone has been incredibly rude, distasteful, and disrespectful, especially on a post about a sick and dying person. There’s more to life than smartphones.

There’s more to life than making money but Steve would rather be a dick and screw other people over for lots more of it.

I’m disrespectful for a reason, I have no tolerance for stupidity, fanboyism or FUD.

Thank you… As a humongous Droid fan, I still have to say that we should have a little tact people. I hate to say it but there is no greater driving force for Android than is our competition with Jobs. Every Batman needs a Joker.
