Unlike PowerAmp, simplePLAY allows you to tap or gesture anywhere on the screen. PowerAmp does have gesture support, but the target is typically half the screen (depending on what features you have enabled), and tap to toggle play/pause is not possible. My goal was to have a totally ‘no-look’ design, allowing you to safely control the music while driving.

I’ve been using this app for several months and it’s very stable and the perfect simple music player, IMO. Essential for listening and controlling music in the car. And the developer has responded to bug reports very quickly. If you want an equalizer and endless power tweaks then this won’t do. But for simplicity and safe driving, simplePLAY lives up to its name.

There is an option to keep the screen on while driving, and I am looking at adding an option to lock it without power, although battery drain would be a concern

Does this make the screen stay on, too? The most dangerous part of controlling music while driving is having to turn on the phone, then unlock the screen before you can even tap a button.

The setup that’s worked best for me is to use the car mount with my Droid X, connected to my vehicle’s AUX input. It’s effective and cheap. You can take phone calls over the speakers, too.
