Logitech Revue Drops to $99, Anyone Ready to Try Out Google TV?

If Google TV was something that looked interesting to you back in 2010, but the price and lack of an app market turned you off, then maybe now you’ll want to reconsider.  The Logitech Revue has been dropped to just $99 from $249, making this one heck of a steal.  The original price back at launch was $299, so you are essentially getting a GTV box for a third of its original price not even a year after it became available.

I will mention that I’ve had the Sony version with a Blu-ray player since the day it launched and can’t say that I use it much anymore.  Sure, it’s convenient if I need to look something up on Google quickly and my phone isn’t handy, but for the most part, the experience is not as polished as you would expect it to be.  It definitely has uses, just not as many as we’d have all hoped for from the beginning.

With that said though, the re-launch of Google TV, based off of Honeycomb, should be here in the next month or so.  Once that happens, the platform will essentially be brought back from the dead with the Android Market, apps and a whole new UI.  From some of the leaks that have popped up around the internet, along with some of the stuff we saw at Google I/O, I’ll even admit that I’m excited to see where the future of it is headed.

Buy.

Cheers Dustin, Brett and everyone else!

    Price back up to $249

is there any website that are shipping them now? amazon and best buy is on back order.. any suggestions..

    • http://twitter.com/Curtis4545 Curtis.

I just bought one from logitech, im not sure how many are left. They are selling out fast.

  • http://twitter.com/Megan_Watson Megan W.

Strange…we use our Google TV all the time.  The kids love it!  Pandora, PBS Kids, Sesame Street, LeanBack for Youtube with the kids shows you can watch. Plus Amazon movies on demand etc.  It is only going to get better when Honeycomb hits.  I can’t imagine one day without using the Google TV features.

Man am I glad I waited… Just ordered mine today from Amazon… It’ll be here friday and at this price its worth it. I just hope that it is revved with the latest OS version so that we can have the market and Google HD Videos on demand (along with Amazon and Netflix). It was a easy decision between this box and another Roku.

Thank you a lot for giving everyone such a splendid opportunity to read articles and blog posts from here. It is often very excellent plus packed with a great time for me and my office fellow workers to visit your site no less than thrice in a week to learn the newest tips you have got. And of course, I’m also at all times fulfilled with all the eye-popping principles you serve. Selected two areas in this posting are in fact the very best we’ve ever had.

  • Polarbear

Had a Roku that died within the first year. Was a pain to switch video inputs to watch. Revue has been a piece of cake to use and the update to Honeycomb will be a bonus. Just bought a second one for the bedroom. Can’t wait to retire the notebook that I’ve had on the nightstand by the bed for the GTV keyboard that will control everything..

Sony’s BluRay Google TV is $100 when you purchase a computer or laptop from them, which I’m about to do so. I figured I might as well since I wanted it anyway.

My spouse and i felt absolutely delighted Edward managed to complete his survey through the precious recommendations he grabbed from your very own weblog. It’s not at all simplistic to just possibly be offering techniques that many some other people could have been trying to sell. We really already know we’ve got the website owner to give thanks to because of that. The type of illustrations you have made, the straightforward site navigation, the relationships your site give support to create – it’s got all remarkable, and it’s facilitating our son in addition to us reason why this matter is cool, and that is rather indispensable. Thank you for all the pieces!

Thanks a lot for giving everyone an extraordinarily superb possiblity to read critical reviews from here. It is always very kind plus packed with a great time for me personally and my office mates to search the blog on the least thrice a week to see the fresh tips you have got. And lastly, I am also usually contented with the sensational concepts you give. Certain two ideas in this posting are certainly the most efficient I’ve had.

Maybe a few months ago before I built my HTPC. Honestly I think the platform is dead unless Google can work out a deal with the content providers.

  • Kinchas

Back ordered at Amazon & Best Buy.   Somebody must like the price.  I am going to take the plunge.

  • Randal

do you sign in on the HBO Go or does the set top box recognize if your a subscriber?

  • http://cityboytech.wordpress.com cityboytech

i bought one yesterday and plan to root it to access all of that blocked content. cant wait til Honeycomb gets on there

  • http://twitter.com/Druuseph Andrew Sileo

As much as I love Android and appreciate Google products GoogleTV does not hold a candle to Boxee.

  • Anonymous

Can’t find any info on DNLA on their website.  Anyone have this and confirm it doesn’t support it?  If not then no go for me as I have my media sitting in a WD TV Live Hub and need to stream from it since Revue doesn’t support MKV.

  • Wahmuk

I read about the price drop last night and ordered one directly from Logitech a few minutes later. This is the price I thought it should have in the first place.

  • Matthew Koenig

I really like my Google TV because its linked with my DishNetwork DVR and theres alot of cool features that entails. Also you get HBOGO now with it, which i really love having.

  • http://www.anishvshah.com Anish

I want to get one, mainly for the web browser (to watch Indian movies & shows). Just not sure if the browser is good enough. Any knowledge on that front?

  • Drewd

I am definitely in the minority, (and I definitely think Google TV is not as good as it should or could be), but I LOVE mine (Sony).  Wish I could go back in time and buy the Logitech for $99, tho!  I bought it the first day it came out, have a work-around for network content (PlayOn), enjoy Netflix, Pandora, Napster, YouTube Leanback, Chrome, Picasa, streamed mp3’s, tablet/phone remote, etc. on it.

Bought a Logitech Revue at Christmas and I have to say that I’m pretty dissapointed. Lots of things are blocked and there have been no major updates that have changed anything with the UI, apps, etc. If it doesn’t get Honeycomb I’m going to consider chucking this on eBay. This news just hurt my wallet.

    • TomHolmes

When you say lots of things are block, what do you mean other than the full-length shows that the networks allow you to play on the web? I know Hulu is not available yet, and that’s a problem for some folks. I’m a Netflix guy so it doesn’t bother me. You can still watch the networks on your cable service through GTV of course but I understand it’s not the same.

I just got back from best buy and I went with the intention of buying the revue. Upon further review, I decided against it. There will be no support for the revue and I believe that the company has been trying to get rid of the units to stave off some of there losses. When and if logetech comes up with a honeycomb version, it will not be an OTA update for this $99.00 revue. Don’t waste your money. Save it till next month when something comes up, and it will. I I suggest you take that$ $99.00 and get a VGA or A HDMI CABLE, AND and plug in from your PC.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dustin-Carney/1004713533 Dustin Carney

logitech stated yesterday it will be recieving the ota for HC.

      • http://twitter.com/dizknee24 Peter Wassel

Correct they already confirmed they will be bringing 3.1 to the Revue.

  • John

    Full browser.
“Channels” like netflix, pandora, amazon VOD.
    Nifty search.

    Not much else.

UI is still weak, and slow.

Honeycomb update with Android Market access will be a big plus, but I don’t know how much the Revue will be able to use HW accel, and I don’t know how well it will run some of the games.

  • http://twitter.com/jamdev12 jamdev12

I’ll wait until Google brings and updated version of the OS for this toy. I’ll buy it then. Until then, I’ll be sitting by the sidelines.

  • http://slally.myopenid.com/ Sean

Bought the last one from my local Best Buy.  Haven’t had too much time to fiddle with it yet, but I like having the ability to google search with pip.

I simply needed to thank you very much once more. I’m not certain the things I could possibly have made to happen without these ideas provided by you concerning my theme. It was actually the hard difficulty in my circumstances, nevertheless looking at a new well-written tactic you managed it took me to leap over contentment. Now i am grateful for the support and in addition expect you realize what a powerful job you are always doing educating people through the use of your web site. I am sure you haven’t come across all of us.

HDMI only? Don’t have HDMI/HDTV. Need a digital cable box? Don’t have a digital cable box. I have a 32″ SD CRT tv with basic cable channels 1-99. I use my xbox 360 to stream media to my television from my ~11 year old PC. Yeah, hate all you want, but at least I save a shitload of money on technology.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

and my second bedroom, I have a 27″ CRT that I found out back by the dumpster, and hooked up to it are my dreamcast, SNES, NES, and modded PS1. XD

      • Parrel

And what do you spend all of the money you save by not buying electronics on?  Food? Movies?  Minigolf?  Powertools?  It’s all the same thing, isn’t it?  Why post in a thread about technology you care nothing for?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

Because I’m allowed to share my opinion, whether you like it or not :)

          I like to travel.

Your also extremely outdated on technology…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

        I’m fine with that :)

        • Anonymous

While I’m not as hardcore at saving as you. I’m also happy to report that after quitting subscription TV in 2007, I’ve saved well over $4800 in TV programming alone. Old PC’s have saved me thousands by acting as media servers/ whole house TV recorders for OTA HD, which let me buy my one (outdated) big screen TV and fancy shmancy cell phone. Nerds FTW.

I don’t feel the need to pay the money needed to get a giant HDTV, HD video equipment, subscribe to HD programming, etc etc etc. I barely even watch TV anyway. I probably watch less than 1 hour of TV a day.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dustin-Carney/1004713533 Dustin Carney

Picking mine up today, best buy had 1 left <3 small towns

  • Anonymous

I’ve always though about buying one, but the lack of a market when it first came out turned me off. I would buy on of these but I’m already in debt because of my Asus Transformer. I’ll probably get a gTV box when they have Ice Cream Sandwich on them.

  • Anonymous

I ordered it basically just to watch netflix on my TV that I don’t have my xbox hooked up to.  Hopefully it works out well.

  • Ryan

I bought mine yesterday because of the upgrade that will be coming.  I will be nice to essentially have an Android tablet on your TV.

    • Ryan

Also as a replacement to my Roku.  The Roku is great for Netflix, but it won’t be anything much than that.  I don’t see how anyone could even compare the Roku and GTV.

  • http://twitter.com/batfandotcom Ben Rollier

I got one for free as part of the developer program.  Haven’t used it much but, I’m excited to check out the Honeycomb implementation.

  • Anonymous

I would rather just see google release it on ps3’s, xbox’s or roku boxes.

  • http://twitter.com/JasonAGrier Jason A. Grier

Android Police said they heard some rumbles that honeycomb might not make it to the Revue. If it does, then maybe I’ll get this. Hopefully this isn’t a liquidation sale.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dustin-Carney/1004713533 Dustin Carney

they also came back out and said it will be coming to the revue,(logitech said it) they reassured people yesterday that it will be coming by the end of the summer to the logitech revue

  • Anonymous

No MKV support is a no go for me.  My parents purchased one when they first came out and wanted me to test it out.  I couldn’t really find anything that was great about it and on top of that it added another remote they had to learn to use.

It is like adding a middle man to a transaction that really just does the same thing but you had to pay for his service.

I know people will rip me on this but I just did not find it worthwhile to me and I do not plan on purchasing one until I can use it as a media streamer that supports MKV.

  • Anonymous

Dish is still selling it “discounted” at $179.99, lololol

I really wanted to buy one, but my wife said no :(

      • http://twitter.com/LiveInTheDream litd

Just put a 22″ tv in the RV for the incredibly hot days. 1080p movies? Yeah definitely.

Planning on throwing in a roku player and streaming movies from my computer. Gonna be nice.

  • Anonymous

The keyboard and web browser capabilities alone are enough to tempt me at this price point, having Honeycomb would be a huge bonus. Browsing the web is a big feature I always felt was missing from my WDTV and my Roku box (which I still have time to return).

  • Scott Willenborg

SUNUVABITCH!  I just paid $249 for mine 5 weeks ago!  hhhmmm, maybe that noise I just heard is not my sanity snapping but the sound of it breaking and needing to be returned…

    • Peter Bartholomul

thats exactly why you wait before you buy. there are many reasons why you should wait. Wait for reviews. The product you buy the day it comes out might have problems or might not have what you are looking for. Another reason you should wait is because the day it comes out the product might be $300 or $800 and a month later it will be lowered to $100 or $400. It’s no ones fault but your own.

      • Scott Willenborg

It launched last fall Brainiac.  What kind of Smart TV technology do you have that let’s you know that 10 months after it launches and it’s still full price, $249 that it will drop $150 to $99 in the next 5 weeks?  I waited until summer, I figured it wans’t going down fast enough to suit me.  I get attrition in early adopting, there is a big difference between buying a techno-gadget that costs $249 today and over the course of 6 months it drops $50.  By the time it’s a year old it’s $149, then down to $99 when a newer model comes out.  This case is WAY different.

I do agree it’s no ones fault but my own.  Fortunetly, Best Buy didn’t feel the same way and since I am a Silver Premier Memeber I get a 45 day price match to which they just issued me $149 credit to.  I just got a free keyboard for my Asus Transformer.  From now on I will refer to my Asus Transformer as “Peter Nincompoop” in your honor.

        • Anonymous

I just ROFLcoptered all over the place!

“From now on I will refer to my Asus Transformer as “Peter Nincompoop” in your honor.”

  • FortitudineVincimus

Already have this functionality – with a keyboard less than have the size – built into my bitchen Samsung tv

  • Anonymous

I paid $50 for a similar Logitech keyboard for PS3. The extra Revue box sounds like quite the steal

  • http://twitter.com/UndergroundWire Andrew G.

I got mine yesterday. I always wanted it just to complete my Android trifecta (Phone, Tablet, TV).  Played with it and it’s a great device but I don’t see it being used beyond the Netflix portion and the occasional YouTube videos. I see why people have returned theirs at the price they bought it.

  • http://www.stateofslate.com Octotron

I bought one yesterday.. for THIS price point, it is pretty awesome.

  • http://twitter.com/Super_Six_Two ss2

I still use my revue, it really does need to be polished and should be a lot better with honeycomb.

  • TomHolmes

The price is Roku competitive. You can surf the web and have extended search functionality. You can use your smartphone, which many people at Droid-Life may have, as a remote control for it, and it also includes a fully functional keyboard with the touchpad. Oh, and they’re upgrading it to Honeycomb later this year, with Marketplace.

Is it work it to have a 50″ Android tablet in your house that also does TV? I’m going to say… yes.

Have I ordered one? Yesterday. Best Buys are selling out of their stock because the response has been quite brisk. I wouldn’t sit on this too long. 2-day shipping free from Logitech.

  • http://www.techefficacy.com JD

Worth it if it gets upgraded to HC & ICS. Any word on promised upgrades to the Revue?

  • Anonymous

    does it have root??? haha

    • TomHolmes

It is supposed to be rooted. Check this out… http://gtvhacker.com/index.php/Main_Page

      • Anonymous

My soldering skills are lacking, too bad there wasn’t a software root option. It would be something cool to mess around with since its only 99 dollars now depending on what you could actually do with it rooted

        • TomHolmes

Yeah the rooting process looks too daunting for me, but if you do have the stones to root this thing with soldering skills required, make sure you don’t set it up. It can only be rooted before it updates.

As soon as someone adds DVR functionality, I’m in.

    • Crazydog

      Well they did buy SageTV…

    • TomHolmes

      See this: http://blog.logitech.com/2010/10/08/logitech-revue-works-with-your-current-cable-or-satellite-provider/

You can search your DVR recorded content only on DISH DVR’s but you can control your DVR no matter who your content company is, through the Revue.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

With all the networks blocking Google TV, it’s pretty much not worth it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/toddlower Todd Lower

Good deal for $99.  But still…is it worth it?
