Samsung 4G LTE Slider Makes a New Appearance, We’re Doubting This is Verizon’s Version of the Galaxy S II

“Please, oh please don’t let it happen,” is all I can seem to tell myself after seeing the latest photos of a Samsung slider that appears to be headed for Verizon’s 4G LTE network.  And what I mean by that is, please do not let this be VZW’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S II.  I understand that there will always be a place for phones with a full keyboard, just don’t let it be what we currently have as our top phone of all time.

Actually, we’re pretty sure (at least assuming) this device won’t be anywhere near the specs of a Galaxy S II and will likely be more of a keyboarded Fascinate (or like the Epic 4G) than anything.  So far Verizon has only released 4G LTE phones that were essentially built with last year’s tech, so it makes sense to assume that this one will also fall into that category.  All signs on our end are pointing towards the DROID Bionic being their first real LTE beast (dual-core, 1GB of RAM, etc.) that will be backed by a massive marketing campaign.  My guess, is that this phone will be their late July or early August 4G LTE filler while they prepare the world for the release of the Bionic (which may not drop until 9/1).

Oh, you can tell that this phone is running an old version of TouchWiz and not the one seen on the SGS2.  That Messaging icon and the shaded home dock are dead giveaways.  This specific phone also happens to be sporting a 5MP rear camera (SGS2 has 8MP) and a 1.3MP front cam (2MP on the SGS2).  So yeah, this isn’t looking at all like some mysterious dual-core slider beast from Samsung, but instead, just another rehash from 2010.

This device first popped up a couple of weeks ago and is now clearly in the hands of testers – we could be seeing it very soon.

Anyone interested in a 4G LTE slider?

i seriously wish i could get this. i love my droid charge, but having an insanely nice full keyboard like that AND 4g would just complete my life. AND an 1800 mah battery?! if only….

So DroidLifers. My 2 year is up in two weeks. I’ve had the WORST luck with Moto devices failing on me. I’ve been through 4 Droid 1′s (still love them) and 5 Droid 2′s (they stopped giving me Droid 1′s). I bricked one, so that was my fault but thats because Moto locks down Droid 2 so much. So, as much as I want the bionic (even though its not out yet), scratch moto from the list, and what phone on Verizon should I get if I upgrade in two weeks?

I have to show some appreciation to you for bailing me out of such a setting. As a result of surfing through the the net and obtaining recommendations which are not powerful, I figured my entire life was over. Existing devoid of the answers to the issues you’ve solved through the website is a serious case, and those which might have in a negative way damaged my entire career if I hadn’t encountered your blog post. That knowledge and kindness in playing with all the details was very helpful. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t discovered such a point like this. It’s possible to at this time look forward to my future. Thanks for your time very much for this professional and sensible guide. I will not hesitate to suggest your site to any individual who should have counselling about this topic.

Ugh, verizon keeps coming out with the crappiest phones.  May be time to think about switching.  Getting bored with my DX.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

Yeah…if this thier sg2 variant (which, since sprint’s version has been routed and looks like the normal one, eouldnt surprise me) would make me sad indeed. I have been waiting on the sg2. Sorry…no need for a kb as I type 10 times faster on a screen. And, I don’t want a thick brick in my pocket (keep it clean). This makes me sad.

Saw that. This is definitely NOT vzw’s version of the sg2. Just an lte epic. I suppose there are those that love mid-range.

  • jbonics

Verizon’s rep that gets them there phones IS SLACKING. You know he’s sweating

  • Joshua Dudash

i hope its not… Just give us the original design with the exynos processor!

I seriously hope this ISN’T the SGS II on Verizon. I really enjoy aesthetics and this phone is kinda ugly.

Just my opinion of course. But I’m also not one that’s much for physical keyboards. No good.

I hope its not vz version of galaxy s2. ICS is not goin to have any buttons at all so y keyboard?

    • Anonymous

That doesn’t mean that devices running ICS cant have buttons. Back at Google IO they announced that newer phones from the major manufacturers will receive 18 months worth of updates, which would include ICS. Since that’s the case, it has to have support for buttons or else every release of 2011 wont be able to run 2.4

      • Pete

I understand that. I have droid x and i would love to have ICS on it but personally i m not a fan of keyboards.

TBH its a pretty gay looking keyboard

  • Lawrence Spikes

meh, I will wait on the bionic

Droid-life don’t know shit, that’s why they get all there info from other sources, so don’t give me that shit about  a good friend told me this, that knows a lot about that, I don’t want to bring this up but what is all that about when you said “don’t be surprise if it gets release anytime soon” Please explain that? “Bionic”

  • Jason Purp

Awesome to know that Samsung phones on Verizon apparently won’t be getting TouchWiz 4 for whatever stupid reason. Such bullshit.

  • SlickNick

Maybe he meant Galaxy S2 when he said 9/1. You’re acting as if he wasn’t the one who told you August 4 in the first place. Go swallow a knife. Droid-Life is the truth.

    • Anonymous

He wasnt aa leaked screen shot was. it isn’t like he told us anything he only relayed info from other sites.

      • SlickNick

Yes, several other sites and great sources all placed in a cebtral location saving you and me plenty of time and clicking. I can search the web and forums till my pinky breaks (from holding up my OG droid) but instead Kell and DL do the work for me.

        • SlickNick

And DL IS the source of so many other sites’ info. Not to mention developer interviews and relationships, mad amounts of downloads, root love, and I even suspect Kellex works for Verizon or has a tight insider. Man anyone who doesn’t give Droid-Life props can just die. Peace out!

    • tjmonkey15

I’ve also come to realize that the less moving parts the better.

  • OG Droid

What the crap? I want the bionic or sgs 2!!! Not this junk!!!

  • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

I want the GSII that the rest of the world has. If possible with in the next 19 days, so I can upgrade to an awesome phone.

    • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

Speaking which. What VZ phone should I get DroidLifers?

  • Lars

I sure hope this is VZW’s version of the SGS II.

    • Jake

Me too. The arrow keys help with activating mouse hover elements on sites. I also like using the browser keyboard shortcuts (refresh, search, home, etc.). Many Flash video sites let you use the arrow keys for fast forward, rewind and volume control. Of course there’s no keyboard to take up most of the screen. Keyboard controls for games are also much better than having your thumbs covering up the screen.

      • DroidGuy

Too bad too many people fail too understand how a keyboard can enhance their Android experience. Must be Apple’s influence.

        • Rikpa

I bought the original Droid the day it dropped. Used the slide-out keyboard for the first week….Have not used it since! Forget it’s even there! Who’s getting the GSII?

      • DroidFTW

I use the browser keyboard shortcuts on my Droid all the time. It’s nice to actually see the surrounding area when you’re typing (ie. seeing what you’re replying to). Mouse hover activation is a pain without arrow keys or an optical pad (which seems to be missing on newer Android phones).

        • Selas

When Android phones used to have optical pads, I was hoping Google would add an optional (activated through a menu option) mouse pointer to the stock browser. A mouse pointer would not only be able to activate mouse hover elements on websites, it would also make controlling Flash content a lot easier. Right now, the keyboard arrow keys and the current implementation of the optical pad won’t let you to activate mouse hover elements or click on any controls in Flash videos/sites.

Why can’t people realize that a keyboard provides more than just simple text input. Think outside the box, don’t live under a rock, be imaginative, don’t be narrow-minded, etc, etc.

The optical mouse pointer idea would be a great Android browser feature too. All too often I give up trying to watch a Flash video or navigating a Flash based site because a touchscreen just can’t handle it.

      • Les

I use keyboard shortcuts all the time too. In addition to the ones mentioned, there are cut, copy, paste and go to the start/end of a line. Keyboards are for power users.

If this isn’t the SGS 2 then I’ll continue to wait for a slider with non-last’s specs.

    • Anonymous

      That’s exactly what I was thinking…

      • Inkster09

Love the name ronin… my sons middle name

    • Kevin

I have to say going from my OG Droid to the Tbolt wasn’t exactly a 100% upgrade. The benefits of a physical keyboard are just too great. My next phone will be having both LTE and a physical keyboard.

      • Saucers

I completely agree.  Talking with a friend last night, he thinks physical keyboards are a complete waste, etc etc. but I sorely miss mine. If VZW’s SGSII goes the way of the Epic 4G on Sprint and they add a (good!) keyboard, I’ll be extremely tempted to find a buyer for my Thunderbolt so I can pick this bad boy up.  ESPECIALLY if they give it a lower full retail price like the Droid 3, although I’m not counting on that.

      • Anonymous

I hate you guys because you are right. I told myself that my next phone would be all touch screen but mostly because I really want to get a good cover for it to make it last. However, after 1 year with my Droid where it was always naked and fell out of my bicycle at 17 mph once and after seeing the Droid 3; A Dual Core LTE 5 row physical keyboard phone is looking mighty appealing.

  • Anthony Alves

First it was the Evo > Thunderbolt… now it’s the Epic > This samsung phone.

    Really Verizon?

  • http://profiles.google.com/nerdydesi Nerdy Desi

Too bad you feel that way Droid-Life. I’d LOVE to have a Galaxy S2 with a physical keyboard. But I suppose I’m sadly in the minority. Too many people want anorexic phones these days.   : (

    • Djstar2k2

im with you on the keyboard part but it seems nowadays high end doesnt say keyboard like the G1 and the og Droid.  ahh the magiacal stevo! crazy how the main driving point behind the icant do days is disappearing and now the standard of high end android is what icrap does do lol. guess thats why every none android tech site says icrap is the standard bearer and oems prove them right and uncle googs goes along with them wow!

      • Anonymous

Google doesn’t make phones so it’s not them.

        • Djstar2k2

really so uncle googs has no control?  so the G1,G2 and og Droid had keyboards only because the oem’s say fit?  wow umm sorry pal but at the end of the day uncle googs has the final say android is their’s.  and im certain googs can get any oem make what they want or do as they see fit.  and if you dont believe me search droid life for skyhook and youll see how uncle googs tanked that deal they had with mr moto

          • Anonymous

No they dont. Unless it is a nexus then they say what is going into it otherwise they dont say it has to have a keyboard or what not. Otherwise there would be more keyboard phones or more phones with the same os and no skins. So sorry pal you are wrong!

    • Anonymous

Me too.  I was considering the D3 or the MyTouch 4G Slide, but neither of those has LTE.  This Samsung LTE slider, however, has risen immediately to the top of my list…

    • http://www.whatsyourissue.tv/ HeathCliff Rothman

After having an Original Droid since the beginning (two years?), I am slowly coming to the realization that I want a keyboard.  I’ve managed without, and adjusted, but I type much slower than I did in the Treo/ Blackberry era.  I couldn’t wait to get rid of the Blackberry, get a bigger screen, web browsing, etc. etc.  And things have moved so fast, and it’s been like a toy store, with all the features and app.  I currently have the Thunderbolt.  All that being said, I’m experiencing slow creep of missing the keyboard again, and having my fingers whizz as I type an email quickly, with those little raised button-keys – not to mention the spellcheck with Blackberry after you finish the missive.  I don’t find the glass keyboard as easy or fast, no matter which keyboard I use, and currently I’m using the new splitscreen one, which is pretty good.  It’s still a struggle.  So, notwithstanding the bias of this site against keyboards, I am WAITING for an LTE 4G with all the feature/ front/ rear camera, big screen, etc., WITH a keyboard.  I will SO be there, and sell the Thunderbolt.

  • Bewara2009

Everyone calm down the Bionic is differently coming August 4th or so, don’t listen to this article. Sorry droidlife but lately you you have been acting strange for the past week, am thinking this will be my last post on droidlife, since they are not being honest on their blog!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

And how do you know this?

      • Jake Bailey

Leaked photos, Bionic on VZW site, FCC documents, Best Buy flyers.  Take your pick.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

Yeah remember the first Verizon LTE phone, the Thunderbolt? How many delays and release date speculations were there for that phone? I think the preorders at Best Buy started a good month before the phone got released and they didn’t even know when it was coming at the time. At HoFo insiders were saying release date for the Bionic was always late August or early September so it makes since I think.

          • Anonymous

But the TB wasn’t sent back to the drawing board. I mean i guess we will find out in a few weeks i dont think moto wants to wait any longer to release it because they know it is losing steam the longer it takes to get released.

          • Kensims82

With a few weeks left until Aug. 4th and the supposely large marketing campaign they’re going to do for this phone, I don’t see it happening. I’m now looking for a late Aug. to early Sept. release. Who would market a phone of this much hype for a week and a half. Better yet, no one has even seen an OFFICIAL picture of it from Verizon. (Not a Bestbuy leaked flyer that doesn’t even have a date itself.) Sorry to say Beware2009, Aug. 4th is not happening.

          • Anonymous

supposedly is the only thing that you are going on. It could most likely be another quiet launch like most of the android phones since verizon will most likely put a lot of its money and resources into the new iphone. Just saying anymore if its not an iphone it doesnt get much advertising.

      • Tylerzimmick

Droid 3 really should have been LTE instead of this Epic rebranding for Verizon.

  • Anonymous

if this is the Verizon version of the epic 2 wonder if it will have the same 1.2 Ghz processor? Hope theu beef it up a little make it dual core and you got yourself a winner.

Doubtful, it’ll probably have similar specs as the Charge but with a keyboard.

      • Donamello

Can you not share anything then?  It seems kinda douchey to throw a casual mention of the Bionic not dropping until 9/1 and then being very vague about it unless you’re hands are tied.  Even then, you’d think there was some kind of news you could provide….

        • James_Ever

This isn’t the first time that this date has been mentioned why all the dumping crap on Kellex? Howard Forums has been saying this date for awhile now and they’re spot on with practically every major device released. Pretty sure Kellex has good reason to put that down, otherwise he wouldn’t have bothered.

ikr? Other sites are being stupid about it. Honestly I think its just a 4G version of the Epic 4G on Sprint. Just a 4G slider for Verizon which Im sure people will love and buy

          • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

BIONIC needs to come out. I just hope it isnt over-hyped and undelivered. I mean this thing was seen at CES and has gone through multiple “enhancements” and has to run up against the GSII and other high end Android phones coming out in the fall. Also not to mention the next pure Google experience phone that will run ICS.

      • Anonymous

If you are going to make a claim about a phone release(bionic) you should atleast back it up. Every one in the know was saying aug4 ish not Sept so where did you hear sept? Jw

        • Kensims82

Man, this Sept. thing is really getting to you huh? You know there are other things in life you can be doing until this phone comes out right. Because it’s not going to come out, until it comes out. No matter what date you want to hear.

Great comment captain obvious. Im pretty sure everyone is doing somethijg maybe you on the other hand arent but it is just a phone.
