DROID3 Finally Announced by Verizon, Available Online Today and In Stores July 14

The DROID3 went on-sale last night online and through Verizon’s telesales, but we can finally call it official now.  The next beast in the DROID series has been announced by VZW and is as expected, $199 on 2-year contract and $459 at full retail.  It’s sporting a dual-core processor (more than likely an OMAP4), 4″ qHD screen, 5-row keyboard, front and rear cameras, HDMI mirroring, 1080p video recording, and Android 2.3.  It’s not 4G LTE, but it should is packing some nice specs and should definitely be considered.

Still no word on the bootloader situation – we’ll likely know in the next day or so.

If 4G phones and rate plans cost the same as 3G, then why buy 3G?

    • Anonymous

beacuase none of the 4G phones appeal to me. Show me a Slider that looks as good as the D3 and Im ON it. otherwise, Im taking my D3 w 3G w a heavy sigh of disappointment.

  • http://twitter.com/howzball Mike

I’m considering this phone for myself now and swapping with the better half when the Bionic finally gets here. She still loves the keyboard and I’m in need of a new phone big time right now, my Og Droid is got runaway screen like a mofo and is almost unusable at this point.

  • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

Tomorrow is D3 day for me too!!!!!

  • commonsense

This phone would be perfect if it had 4g but since it doesn’t its already obsolete!

  • Adam

Not meaning to be that guy, but you have an extra should in the second to last sentence. Just a heads up :)

  • RaptorOO7

Ordered mine today with the extended battery and door.  My Charge will be out the door on Saturday.  I look forward to CES 2012 to see what the real crop of 4G LTE ICS phones have in store and if Moto can’t get their stuff together by then I have no doubt HTC, Samsung or others will have great products out.

So dual processor & Gingerbread, but no 4G?! Uhhh… What gives???

    Locked Bootloader!!!

It’s not “unlockable” like the Motorola Xoom. Beyond that, I have no
idea how hard it might be to unlock. Not a topic we entertain on this
    site in general.

Just ordered one myself.  Can’t wait to get it tomorrow.  Can’t wait to play with it.  Been waiting two years now for the DROID 3!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

Finally Verizon starts releasing phones with Gingerbread and not Froyo. Now I am curious to see how locked down this device will be.

  • Anonymous

I am still not amused by the qHD pentile display.

  • J Dub

Waiting to here about the bootloader situation. I want custom kernels on this beast of a chipset. Look at the OMAP in the D1. That thing has been pushed to 1.3 Ghz on some phones. Seeing as how it came stock at 550 Mhz I think thats a pretty good OC. I want to see the same thing done on the D3. Unlock the bootloader and let devs go wild with kernels and vanilla Android.

  • Anonymous

Anyone know if this is a pentile display?

I really want to upgrade from my OGD, but it’s not going to happen unless I find another similar quality IPS or possibly SAMOLED display.  I didn’t really believe the pentile looked that bad, till I saw them in person – they are nowhere near as sharp.

  • http://twitter.com/erikbond Erik Bond

I think I’m going to wait til it gets in stores…opportunity to save some more money and really decide if I want to trade-in my Droid Charge for this….but it’s looking really, really tempting right now.

  • EC8CH

Sweet… this should bring us one step closer to the release of some real phones on VZW

you know the Bionic or SGII

  • Doc

Curious if anyone thinks the price will be cheaper on Amazon/Best Buy/etc? I have a NE2 to use so I can order it through Verzonwireless for $150. Not sure if I should wait until next week or get it now.

    • Anonymous

I’m sure it will be amazon and those sites are always cheaper. If you can wait a week or so then I’m sure you can get it cheaper through them.

    • Anonymous

Hit up costco. They are cheaper than going through verizon even with your ne2

would you be so kind for us to get a screenshot of it so some of us can try and get those prices honored when speaking to telesales?

My upgrade isn’t officially due until 7/11 so I cant get an upgrade price to show online, and telesales are willing to push an early upgrade but it’s still 199$.

Another Moto fail phone. Locked bootloader, Blur, Pentile screen, no 4G.

Oh well, at least Moto can be remembered for the OG Droid. They haven’t done much since.

    • Anonymous

Boo hoo hoo. If you dont like it why are you commenting on an article about it? Move along troll not everyone is in a 4g area and many may not be for quite some time

      • Anonymous

That’s why we comment on articles to give are opinions. I also agree, that with a locked bootloader, this will fail for the Dev community. It may not fail for everyday user.

    • Anonymous

      Another wise ass comment fail.

      • Anonymous

You fail for your comment. Didn’t realize you were the comment mod.

        Why bother making your comment?

    • boo hoo

I could care less about unlocking bootloader.  Blur??????  My D2 works fine….assuming it has Blur as well.  Pentile Screen  whatever.  I have no issues with my D2…assuming its Pentile screen.  lol.  4G…..who cares.  I have 3G and travel all over the country…..EVERY WEEK.  I have no complaints about the 3G and am content with using the 4G when it’s everywhere and ready in every phone.  Too many cry babies over the little crap that the majority don’t care about.

  • Rp780

Forgive me if this as already been asked. I trying to decide between Droid 3 & Bionic if bot have 512 mb of RAM what makes the Bionic so much better?

    • DroidzFX

Nobody is sure is about the official specs of the newset bionic revision so putting a number on the memory is just speculation. 4g is gonna be the biggest factor but it could be also clocked higher. Without knowing the newest specs everything is up in the air.

      • Rp780

Thanks…guess I’ll have to wait till Aug/Sept to see.

  • Anonymous

    I don’t need 4G but I would like 1 GB DDR2…

  • Waknatious

That’s a gorgeous phone.  So disappointed it’s not 4G… I really wanted this to be my next.  Sad.

  • http://twitter.com/bobukcat Bob Kloentrup

Did we know it was going to be a world phone? I was surprised to see the GSM Bands and Global Ready stuff in the specs. If my D1 wasn’t working pretty well on GPA15 right now I might consider buying a D3 then selling it on EBay and buying a Bionic for full price later.

    • TomHolmes

Yes we’ve known it would be a world phone for some time. Not a big feature for me, but if you need it, you NEED it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ThinkPete Peter Souza IV

Got mine ordered for overnight delivery tomorrow.  :D

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AQ5HWJRNNOGYAM7ZPLXVC4EJ5I Nadine Barrett

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

  • Kierra

I love the look of the new blur. Anyone else still “rioting” against the look  probably are just doing it to be douches.

    • tjmonkey15

I kind of like blur too.  I have the Droid X with 2.3.3. Do you know if the Droid 3 blur is that much different?

      • http://www.facebook.com/ThinkPete Peter Souza IV

It’s quite a bit nicer — it’s the same that’s on the DX2, which I owned for about 10 days before sending back.  Couldn’t cope without a keyboard and those physical menu keys were a pain.

      • Moto_AgentXT59

yes its much different..lots of different 3D animations and a new lock screen

    • Anonymous

of course people will bitch and moan about it because thats what people do on the internet and they cant act on their own they just go by what other people say. Same thing with the pentile screen trolls.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

I have no problem with Blur but in general I want the option to be able to remove a manufactures UI.  I feel as if it drains my battery and I would love to have the option of making my device pure.

Believe me Blur has come miles since it was first released. In my opinion it goes competes directly with Sense and in some cases wins.

    • Inkster09

Ok fine it looks pretty cool. Just wait a cpl weeks when that blur starts eating through your phone to slow it down and make it laggy. Sure it’ll be snappy at first…but it’ll be same please blur. Lag lag lag.

  • Tddawg

For people that don’t like 4G right now, this is a great phone to get. It won’t be 4G fast but i’m sure it still will have some speed to it. Personally i’m waiting on the Droid Bionic/iPhone 5 situation to choose my phone but if both of those phones sucked i might just end up getting this.

  • Anonymous

Just give me the updated Blur with an unlocked bootloader on DX. Seriously, how many versions of Blur can Moto have?

  • And1

I got mine for $149 on upgrade price, and bought a second one for the wife at full price $459. I have used a Droid X for one year now, and my home button just broke two days ago. I miss the feel of a keyboard so I am excited to get a slim slide-out keyboard with 5 rows.

4G is not important to me because it is not available in my area yet. I am sure it will take another year before all the bugs are worked out of 4G and battery performance can handle it.

So for now, I am a Droid 3 owner. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. I even paid for overnight shipping.

    • Anonymous

Im tyring to upgrade but the 199$ price is really bothering me.
would you be so kind for us to get a screenshot of it so some of us can try and get those prices honored when speaking to telesales? The wifey’s OG Droid Screen went black and she’s been out of a phone for over a month.

My upgrade isn’t officially due until 7/11 so I cant get an upgrade
price to show online, and telesales are willing to push an early upgrade
      but it’s still 199$.

Was up  last night after the DroidDoes post, clicking and clicking then I went to bed. Finally this morning I just got done ordering it I will have it tomorrow!! Yes!

  • Mctypething

“Still no word on the bootloader situation” – well why don’t you try to figure out the word instead of reporting things after the fact after you see it somewhere else. At what point does this site become a spider site of things you can find on 60 other android blogs on the net.

    • Waknatious

Dude, don’t be a dick.  No one’s forcing you to be here (best droid site on the web, btw)

      • tjmonkey15

        I agree

    • Adam

Excuse my French, but if you don’t like it leave the damn site ass hole. This is the best site on the Internet.

  • Anonymous

Found out just now that D3 is going for $149.99 for upgrade eligible customers. At least that was what I saw today on my account. Anyone else getting the same result? Anyways, FYI. I’m still waiting for the Bionic or SGS2. And no, that price does not count my NE2, so essentially I can get it for about $99.99

    • Anonymous

Do you have a corporate discount or something?  Try adding it to your cart and see if the pricing sticks… last night a couple different prices were showing up for me but once in cart it went back to $199 (before my $50 NE2).

      • Anonymous

I tried it, and the price sticks! no free shipping though…. and my corp discount only applies to monthly billing, not phone purchase :0(

        • Anonymous

That’s awesome.  Yeah wish VZW had thrown us a bone and tossed in free overnight shipping on this one.

  • Casey Rose

I just ordered mine, got it for 169.99 with my upgrade. No free overnight shipping for me, but it was only $13. Stoked to get my new toy!!

  • Anonymous

no 4G  and only 512 mb of RAM = fail…….just my opinion

    • chaosrv

The first version of the Bionic only had 512mb as well.  I remember this being one of the key differences between it and the Atrix.  Now on revision 3 we have no reason to assume it will have anything other than the same 512 mb.  Until proven otherwise, should we consider the Bionic half a fail?

      • Anonymous

The Bionic has webtop and it’s been upgraded to meet competition, I thinks it’s safe to assume it will have 1 GB.

  • Anonymous

    RAM???

  • Anonymous

And next the hands on video walk through so we can see what this bad boy is capable of doing and understanding the person in the video.

  • Droiddoesyourmom

haha, if you get this you won’t have unlimited data.  and you’ll be stuck on slowg

    • Anonymous

With Verizon’s new crippled data plans, the last thing you would want is 4G. That’s like buying a Ferrari to drive in a parking lot.

    • Anonymous

If you’re already on an unlimited plan you’ll be grandfathered in.

  • Anonymous

Anyone want to buy a Thunderbolt? I like my TB but I got it for the 4G thinking the city I live in would be getting 4G sometime soon. Turns out it won’t be for AT LEAST a year. Would like to switch to the D3 instead.

        • http://profiles.google.com/apostrafee Luke Johnson

yeah i dont know what they were thinking there….hopefully the new and improved bionic has more cause initially it was gonna run 512….that would be so dumb…regardless physical keyboards just dont do it for me

    • Inkster09

Who cares it still has blur and vzw bloat on it. Its going to start lagging and bugging soon enough.

      • Inkster09

By the way the blur STILL looks ugly as sin.

        • Kierra

Nope, you’re probably just holding on to that and thats fine too :)

          • Inkster09

Ok actually saw video on new blur its pretty cool. But here comes the lag and other stuff due to vzw bloat and the other things vzw STUFFS into their devices

          • Inkster09

4G is marketing hype – to sell phones, and to force you to pay more for data

      • Droiddoesyourmom

you clearly haven’t used 4g.  forget about streaming stuff.  consider downloading apps:  opera mobile 11 is like 10MB.  Would you rather wait 2-3 minutes for it to download or download it in 10 seconds?  I really am not joking, that is the difference.  I was on SLOWg yesterday downloading apps and i wanted to shoot myself.  Luckily I entered a 4g area while downloading and everything finished in seconds.

        • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

Why don’t you be a team player and do your heavy downloading on wifi?  People taxing these wireless cell phone spectrums is the reason we’re now seeing tiered stuff…

        • http://twitter.com/woody24 Dustin Wood

You are someone who obviously grew up post 2000 internet. Those of us pre 2000 internet find 3G blazing fast. I remember when downloading a 10 meg file took 30 minutes. Uphill. Both ways.

      • Anonymous

3g and 4g data cost the same so you arent paying any more for 4g.

      • Dsf

how is 4g a marketing hype? verizon 3g speeds average 0.70 Mbps across america.  verizon’s 4g network averages over 8 Mbps.

I can agree that it’s a marketing hype on all the other major networks like AT&T and T-Mobile but with Verizon you’re actually getting something new.

We all know that you’re just jealous because you wish you had 4g

      • http://profiles.google.com/apostrafee Luke Johnson

        512

      • Anonymous

according to the China Press Release of the Milestone3, itt’s 512MB RAM, someone or somewhere mentioned it’s DDR2 (or was it just DDR) so that’s spose to make it sufficient. I would still feel better w 768MB RAM, but preferably w 1GB DDR2 to be sure it’s future proof for the next 2 yrs. I dont want to scarpe along like I did on my OG Droid w constant tweaks just to make sure it can handle current software.

as you can tell, my info isnt solid, but it’s a start.

  • Anonymous

I don’t see any mention of WebTop/laptop dock compatibility.  This was rumored to be included functionality from way back… anyone know if it’s there?

    • laptop docking please

      • Anonymous

Same here but there’s no mention of it in the User Manual, on the Verizon site, or on the Moto site.  Not looking good…

    • Stelv81

It probably doesn’t have webtop compatibility. That requires an additional 512mb chuck of ram. The Atrix has half of its 1gig of ram just dedicated to the lapdock.
