Swype Releases Version 3.0, Tablet Support And Tap Correction (Updated)

UPDATE:  The 3.0 update is now available. Enjoy and let us know what you think.

Swype just got done announcing version 3.0, bringing with it some very neat features including tablet support, tap correction, and horizontal word choice. After looking for it on the Swype site, we couldn’t find anything, so we checked in with our contact over there – Community Relations guru, Brian Resnik who had this to say:

So, we’re going through some last minute checks to make sure everything is rock solid before we push the new version live.  This is a big launch for us, and we want to make sure all of the problems people have had in the past have been duly addressed.  Particularly, we’re making sure that the annoying “license failed on reboot” bug is permanently squashed.  We’re currently uploading the latest packages to our servers, switching the website over to the latest version, and doing a final round of testing before we flip the switch and start pushing out the new version.  All said, we should have v3.0 ready to download in about 1-2 hours

He also handed us a very nifty video which showcases all of 3.0’s new features presented by Swype’s Director of Product Development, Brian Yee. You can check it out after the jump.

So now would definitely be the time for all of our amazing readers who are a part of Swype’s Beta program to prepare for the newest Swype goodness. You can check to see if the beta is available here, but it looks right now like their servers couldn’t handle our power.

Cheers Brian!

i changed my browser settings on my asus tf and it downloads and works great, haven’t played with it because I have no wifi at work

One of the cool things about DL is app reviews. After reading about FlexT9, I got it for my Thunderbolt and will never go back to Swype, or slideIT. That thing just rocks… Also, I was really iffy about buying Thumb Keyboard for my transformer after using the swiftkey beta for a few weeks… again DL helped push me over the edge and again using TK I won’t be going back to swifkey… (or swype) long story short; keep those app reviews coming!

cant add words to dictionary on Tbolt , damnit

    • Cole

Nvm i figured it out , it says add to dictionary ? not ADDED to dictionary

  • Yetsko

still doesn’t work on the thunderbolt.

  • Jameson

Mine won’t install correctly … It says to go back and uncheck Swype in the keyboard settings, but I don’t have the option to do that

When I open the installer, it doesn’t even get to the point for my to enter my email/password

    • Jameson

I guess I’ll add that I’m running the OTA Gingerbread on Droid X

This new version of Swype takes care of the only big advantage I think FlexT9 had over it…the word suggestion box above the keyboard instead of that silly popup. I tried FlexT9 for a while after getting it on the Amazon free app offer, and though I think it was excellent, it seemed to bog down every now and then, whereas Swype never does. FlexT9 would especially be slow to bring up names when typing in a field that could bring up suggestions from your contacts. Swype doesn’t have that issue. Then there’s the whole not needing internet access advantage that Swype has. Still don’t trust giving that right to a keyboard.

seems that Xoom owners running a Tiamat kernel or rom are SOL for now…when entering swype beta credentials in the installer, it comes back with “There was a data error, likely due to a bad network connection.  Please try again”. This personally happened to me running Tiamat 1.4.4, Xoom 3G.

  • Dfazzini1

Did anyone notice the flash of 4 pictures of a phone around 1:44? It’s the Sprint Nexus S.

    • Dfazzini1

I think it shows some kind of editable user dictionary.

  • Anonymous

Not sure if this is better than thumb keyboard or not.

I can shrink the keyboard down to run on half the screen but its still too big for my thumb to reach some of the keys towards the middle.

  • Adam

Does this new beta still does not auto insert spaces on sense sms? Cause its not doing it for me.

    • Anonymous

Swype rep says that this is an issue with the messaging app and not swype. he said to try handcent.

  • Lwvyruz

I just downloadrd it on my zoom and it seems to lag pretty bad especially since the normal keyboard has no latest so ever. Are others having this problem and/or is there something I can do to get rid of it because I would really likely use it but the lag makes it very impractical

    • Anonymous

you might want to uninstall and reinstall, because it is working nice and smooth on my xoom. When you do reinstall, make sure to choose the English/Spanish module, it takes up less space and i assume memory as well.

  • Fg2srt4

installa as phone version on my gtablet running honeycomb. But it still works. Just has a white skin and is full size.

    • Brian Resnik

GTablet is 1024×600, WSVGA, not 1280×800, WXGA.  Honeycomb-customized version is currently only available for WXGA tablets.  Sorry :(

      • Fg2srt4

That’s ok. I can still swype so its still faster than the chicken peck. Just trying to make sure I didn’t do anything wrong.

  • Biggie

Got the update on my OG and it’s niiiiiiice.

  • john

ahhh why wont it let me install the swype installer!!?? it says my xoom is not an android phone when i click the link??? is that even possible???

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1119788184 Tobie Azeez

cant get it to work on my xoom.

  • Y2kflhr

does not recognize my asus tf

    • Eric

      nor my Xoom

      • Brian Resnik

More info please.  What’s not working?

    • Scott

Go into your browser settings and under advanced, go into user string. Make sure tablet is selected. I had mine on desktop and Swype wouldn’t recognize my Transformer. It said I didn’t have an Android phone. But when I changed it to tablet, I was able to install it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

working on xoom for anyone yet?

    • Brian Resnik

More info please.  What’s not working for you?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1119788184 Tobie Azeez

when  you click the link its says not an android phone.

        • Brian Resnik

This is a browser settings issue. You need to change your browser’s “Browser Agent” setting from “Desktop” to “Android”

  • Bwh0002

Can’t get it to work on my droid inc.

    • Brian Resnik

More info please.  What’s not working?

    Awesome Enough Said!

  • Ewos1990

Uhhh what if we have a DX and have Swype pre installed and can’t turn it off to install a new version?

    • Brian Resnik

Then you’re out of luck, unless you’re rooted.  We can’t update preloaded versions.  Beta doesn’t play nice with preload installs.

      • Mneighbo

I’m rooted. What do I need to do to get this?

        • Brian Resnik

Instructions for rooted users are available on our forums.  Seek and ye shall find :D

  • Ray

Gahh, I know that DX already has Swype but it would be nice to get some updates.

    • John

Ya..wish we could try this on the DROIDX :(

      • http://twitter.com/fenrisswolf Pablo R Arevalo

You can, as long as you are rooted.  There are some nice instructions online, possibly even on the forums here.

    • Anonymous

Rooted DX, liberty, just got it now and used it for this.

  • Anonymous

Just installed it…the horizontal word choice is so much better than the pop-up style.

i just have to say that swype is whats been missing on my Xoom!

  • Anonymous

swype on tablet blows swiftkey out of the water!

  • csseale

What do they flash at the 2.16 mark in the video.it is very quick and I can’t pause it quick enough. They are talking about upcoming projects when. they flash it

  • Mneighbo

I tried, got them email, but it told me I don’t have an Android phone. Um, yeah, I do, Droid X. Guess being rooted with a diff ROM makes it not Android anymore? Oh well.

    • Mneighbo

Wow, apparently I can’t type either. I meant THE not them. Lol

    • Brian Resnik

Check our FAQ.  This is a browser setting issue.  http://beta.swype.com/android/faq

      • Mneighbo

FABULOUS!! Thank you. I had my Dolphin Browser on Desktop, not Android. Thank you!!

      • Mneighbo

Nope, I can’t uncheck or uninstall Swype.

    Swype
    v3.0 BETA released!

    Here
    are the details:

    Swype
v3 introduces two major new features: Tap
    Correction and Horizontal
    Word Choice List

    Our Tap
Correction engine utilizes many of the concepts that
make swyping so accurate. Seamlessly go from typing to swyping and
    back without missing a beat!

    The Horizontal
Word Choice List replaces our popup word choice
window, giving users an experience more in-line with evolving
Android standards. It also makes dictionary control and word
    selection faster and easier.

    Swype
v3 is available for devices with HVGA, WVGA, FWVGA, QVGA, WQVGA,
    WSVGA, qHD screen sizes

    Introducing
a special Honeycomb-only WXGA version for Android tablets, with
features like “moveable keyboard” that you won’t find
    anywhere else!

    To
see which languages are supported on your device, check the language
    and resolution table

    Improved
licensing: Swype will no longer be disabled after a
reboot on some devices; added support for devices that don’t have a
cellular radio (wifi-only tablets); no more license failures for
    CDMA devices in airplane mode.

    Simplified
registration by allowing users to authenticate their email address
    directly through the installer

    Too
many other improvements to list! Download Swype v3 NOW to explore
everything the next generation of Swype has to offer!

    Limited
End User Support – mostly via our forum

    If
your phone came pre-installed with SwypeDO NOT download this
    beta (it won’t work)The
bummer part is this last part. I think a lot of peeps have it
    pre-installed.

  • tjhrulz

Adding animals to a video makes it 200% better always. (If cat 300%)

does anyone have working swype on the thunderbolt?

    • Anonymous

I do. Works great for me.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, it’s all i use on my Thunderbolt

      • Anonymous

But it doesn’t auto space or capitalize even though I set it to. Are you guys having these problems too?

        • Brian Resnik

What device are you on? And what ROM are you using?  And what application are you trying this with?

  • Anonymous

I thought the dog was going to swype since it is “easier”

  • Anonymous

Lmao at the list of things wrong with the Swype servers. Any chance that they are down because of everyone trying to get the new beta?

  • Anonymous

Looks like it was delayed… From Swype’s site:

    “Oops. We Swyped too soon.

    BETA DELAYED BECAUSE:

    a) We forgot to buy vowels

    b) Our beta build server crashed

    c) Upper management kept accelerating the beta schedule

    d) All of above !#@$!&”

    • John

      i choose “b”

  • ChuckDz3

FlexT9 might be the most underrated ‘swype’/autocorrect keyboard that can compete and potentially out perform swype and swiftkey…

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/PP2KC2NKYXJ5AUNAJWRZTBRPUA Matty G

Maybe it was my OG, but flexT9 always sucked on it.  The swype function didn’t perform nearly as well as the real thing. What are you running it on?

      • ChuckDz3

Really? I have had no problems what so ever. Smooth swype function and word prediction has been much more accurate compared to swype. I’m still rocking the OG running PE Pv6

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kane-Stapler/597191406 Kane Stapler

With this version it goes beyond swype. I installed on my xoom and it is horrible. Swype is my everyday keyboard for my droidx, and i’ve gotten VERY good at it. But this is terrible, no matter how slow and perfect i do some words it wont even put them as a suggestion. Such as my name “kane” and “world”.. Its terrible and unusable.

      • Anonymous

those words work fine on my xoom. you can add words to the dictionary quite easily.

      • Brian Resnik

        Swype rep here…

This is VERY strange.  Can you please try uninstalling and reinstalling?  Are you using a custom ROM or anything of that nature?  We tested this version EXTENSIVELY on several different Xooms here at the office and have never experienced this issue.  I’d like to know more.

  • Ben

What’s the deal with the phones @ 1:45?

    • John

lol ya i noticed that too
      ss of it:

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kane-Stapler/597191406 Kane Stapler

Nice.. i tried for about 2 mins to get that

        • John

lol…ya took me a while too

      • http://www.facebook.com/deliciouswithsauce David Molina

        how did u catch that?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kane-Stapler/597191406 Kane Stapler

Why won’t swype let me sign in to my account?

  • Anonymous

    im sticking with swiftkey X

  • http://twitter.com/Jason13L Jason Lassourreille

What is the image at 1:44 of the phones that flash on the screen? I can’t seem to get a good frame of them.

    • http://twitter.com/capn774 Sean O’Keefe

multiple pictures of different settings on nexus s

love love love the tablet integration. This is preinstalled on the Thrive, right? I may hold off for that.

  • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

According to the Swype website, the Beta is down.

  • blazingwolf

To bad it’s not actually available yet. The Swype servers are down right now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=525322128 Eric Canoy

swype servers are down, beta on hold

  • http://twitter.com/matthod Matt Hodson

Now we just need it fixed so it works 100% of the time on Sense. My Thunderbolt wants some Swype. Can’t complain as it is in Beta and free.

    • Brian Resnik

v3.0 will fix that.  Give it a shot :P

  • http://twitter.com/dotKevin Kevin Stapleton

Do phones that had Swype pre-installed (DX, Droid 2) get the update?

    • http://twitter.com/ericalj erica

Unlikely. They usually post on their site that if your phone came pre-installed with Swype that you SHOULD not install the beta version.

      • tjhrulz

If you get rid of the original you can install it though and it works perfectly. Somewhere on the forums for swype there is a how to but it is pretty self explanatory.

  • Franklin7777

Swype is totally borked for me on CM7 on my DInc, mainly thinking it’s not registered and therefore not working all that well.  Has this been fixed recently?

    • Jesusmacabee

mine is working just fine, but I had the same thing happen. try reinstalling the swype installer

      • Franklin7777

I tried that, still had the same problem.  Maybe I’ll try again once this release is actually out.
