DROIDX Gingerbread Update “Soak” Test Starts Tonight

We were told earlier in the week by Verizon that the DROIDX Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update would start rolling out today, but it appears now as if only members of the “soak test” through Motorola’s support forums will see it initially.  We had assumed that the soak would have started days ago to test and prepare for the mass update which would start today, so this is a little surprising.  And of course, there is that chance soak test members are just being grouped together with non-soak test members, and the rollout will happen as planned to a bunch of you throughout the weekend.

Here are a couple of notes from Motorola about the GB update:

  • The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning. West Coast members and night owls may be up to see it.
  • It’s a good idea to keep your phone charged if possible and plugged in overnight. You don’t have to keep it on, but you can.
  • If you are rooted, you must flash back to the standard Droid X software to receive the update. (Even then we can’t guarantee the update will work.)

Interesting little note there about being rooted.  I would hope that anyone running leaked software would know by now that you would need to roll back in order to accept it.  I’ll point out again though that we’re hearing awful things about root with this update.  If you want to stay rooted going forward, you might want to wait until the devs have a few days to crack on this thing.  Would hate to see all of you hoping to be on “official” software and not see root for the rest of your device’s life.

Cheers B and everyone else!

So, even if we accept this soak, we should be able to SBF back to 2.2 and root again, right?

    • John

that’s one of the big questions that is unkown at this time…we’ll find out soon enough

Nobody is getting the update today unless you are in the soak test group.

    • hkklife

All we need is one update.zip uloaded somewhere.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dieselxdan danny nguyen

Did anyone get their OTA update today?????? I certainly did not.

Where can we do a manual DL fireware???

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

The soak plus a random group can pull the download at 11:59:59 then slowly over the proceeding days until the 1st in which the download will be open for everyone to pull

  • ams165

I’m on leaked 4.5.588 non rooted.

How do I get back so I can receive offical update???

    • Mneighbo2

Unfortunately you have to SBF back to Froyo. Directions are all over the net. Just Google SBF back to Froyo from Gingerbread. I just had to do that. Sucks!

  • Chad

Just got the update. Anyone else? My friend still hasn’t gotten it.  Want to know how this is being distributed.

    • Leering

      Proof?

    • Bunie

I will post when i get it. :D

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

I agree i’d like to see a little proof.

  • jbdroidx

You guys are seriously a joke…I get that phone geeks get all hot and bothered when they get information about a test…but wow, don’t be a dick and post when you agree to a non-disclosure agreement. At least I know the caliber of person we have running these sites.

    • Leering

Who said he agreed to it? I’m pretty sure he gets emailed stories likes this.

    • Leering

Also don’t get all mad because you want to feel special with your “SUPER SECRET” phone test.

    • Anonymous

Before you starting calling someone a dick, why don’t you ask them if they signed the NDA. Nobody is forcing you to use this site, so good riddance.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jrbonser Bob Bonser

I have come to believe there is ZERO reason to root my phone anymore.  There is nothing that I need to do that I can not do un-rooted.  Bloatware doesn’t bother me.  Doesn’t take up a lot of room, and if I don’t want to use it, I don’t.  I had my X over-clocked while it was rooted and now that it is un-rooted, I see absolutely no speed difference.  I will gladly accept the OTA once it comes down.

BTW, I am not saying that rooting is bad or that one shouldn’t do it, just stating that I personally don’t have a need for it anymore.

    • Anonymous

      Several reasons to root:
      – Bloatware can take up a lot of memory (especially HTC’s)
      – Bloatware services run and use power
      – Bloatware services run and can obtain data about you that you don’t want to give out
      – Bloatware makes a mess of the app drawer

      • Roberto Taylor

        ^^^
And THAT is the reason why it’s called Bloatware.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jrbonser Bob Bonser

I have never run out of memory…Android handles it just fine shutting down services that are not needed.

    • Jessie

The only reason I considered rooting was for the screencapping apps since connecting it to the computer is a hassle.  Otherwise I don’t have a problem with stock.

  • Rlaarson_mn

I for one am not going to accept the OTA. I already have 573 leaked GB on my unit and its working with no issues, is fast, is stable, is rooted and should I wish at any time it is tetherable. No advantage to going through all of that upgrade process. After looking at the Droid X2 screen compared to my Droid X screen I am also going to pass on the upgrade at this time. There is just not that much of a difference for me to put down $200 plus one of my two Verizon upgrades. Think I will wait for the Bionic or what ever they will end up calling it.

Gotta love these last moments as an update approaches. Everyone starts to get a little nutty as if the next 72hours is impossible to live through. Naturally forgetting the last 6 months..

    • John

      lol ya

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

I’ve got a Droid X with software version 2.2.1….I’ve used Z4Root to root the phone but I haven’t put ANY roms on it whatsoever, so basically all I have is superuser permissions to get rid of cache and all that crap with no performance enhancements. Will I be able to just unroot using Z4Root and be ok to receive the update in a week or so, or am I screwed? Ive got all the bloatware and crap on the phone just incase it scans for all of it too so I’m good there.

    This just in:
The only “soak test” tonight will be with my woman’s lady parts after some fondu and a “hot butter and mayonnaise” rub down.

  • Wbdrummer

What? I cant hear you over the sound of me wanting an ice cream sandwich! :P

  • Anonymous

Remember when we were all super excited about Froyo being released finally? That seems like a lifetime ago and GB is much better.

    • Anonymous

And on Monday, we’ll anxiously be awaiting Ice Cream Sandwich

      • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Monday? I am waiting for it now. GB is so early 2011.

    • Jim Dandy

Fast forward to next year around this time. That’s when things will get real interesting.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, been on GB for a couple of months now.  More than likely, this time next year, I’ll be on whatever newest phone is up (and stock/unlocked), with 10-core and holographics.

  • SugaShane

Wait, whaaat? (said like a bimbo blonde,) rooted users won’t be able to get the update?

  • http://twitter.com/kevsos Kevin Sosa

My DX is stock rooted, do I need to unroot if I want to receive this update?  (Not that I’m looking forward to lose my root, just asking).

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on this!

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdrianLumani Adrian Lumani

If you are rooted, you must flash back to the standard Droid X software to receive the update. (Even then we can’t guarantee the update will work.)

o ok thx, ya i was gonna say i am not rooted or anything

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=530488485 Jenny Smith

i hope they do the push this weekend, that’d be great, question tho, i see on the screen on that pic above that is system version 4.5.595, my droid x says 2.3.340, so y is mine different

    • Skeetch79

because that was the last GB leak. you are on stock froyo awaiting the official OTA GB 4.5.596

    • Skeetch79

because that was the last GB leak. you are on stock froyo awaiting the official OTA GB 4.5.596

  • Jeff

The DX3 will come out before they finally release this OTA. These OEM’s are all just terrible with this.

  • Skeetch79

Why when the instructions say stock Froyo people still think to ask whether they will receive the update while on any of the GB leaks or any version then stated necesarry?

This happens with any of these software updates – whether OTAs or custom ROMs. The forums and discussion boards are filled with comments and questions – the same ones over and over – “I am not on what you say I need to be on, but will I still get the update?!”

All of the directions and instructions that are posted are clear as day – why all the mass confusion??? It would be so nice for the forums and discussion boards to not be filled with senseless questions from people that can’t  read or understand english.

    • Eric Callahan

Nothing in the post about non-rooted users who installed the leak.  Sorry to offend you with my senseless blather sir.

  • Kamee Mitchell

What if you already the Gingerbread V2.3

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Well it’s a leak, not the real OTA, and no, you won’t get it.

      • Kamee Mitchell

How can I back it up?

      • Kamee Mitchell

How can I back it up?

  • Droidfan

Patience is a virtue.  Happy the Droid X is first  MOTO to get the update. This should hold me over till I upgrade to a 4g MOTO. I still feel high end Verizon MOTOs give you the best shot at upgrades.

    • tjmonkey15

I agree.  As much as people complain about firmware updates (and the lack thereof…), I think Motorola has been doing a good job with the Droid X.

    • Kamee Mitchell

      Will Droid X upgrade to a 4g?

      • mustardhomie

        no…

        • http://www.facebook.com/Monkdn Ray Baker

Is there one sooner than the bionic?  —  and I mean for VZ so if your talking atrix NM

      • mustardhomie

        no…

      • Droidfan

No, afraid not.  In fact, I thinks its a disappointment the Droid X2 isn’t  4g.  Looks like the Droid Bionic will be the first Verizon 4g MOTO.

      • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Yeah, and it will turn the LED into a front facing camera as well as adding a dual core processor. It’s one hell of an update.

        • Kamee Mitchell

Ok, how are we going to get this upgrade?

          • http://www.facebook.com/5.second.minute Kit Tihonovich

            That was sarcasm Kamee.
            We’ll never have 4G on the X.
            Sorry!

          • Kamee Mitchell

I didn’t think that they could upgrade us like that!

  • Ozzzmosis

im running .588 and not going to sbf back to froyo.

    • Davros

.595 is as close to the real update as you can get (for now). My DX soft bricked yesterday and I finally had to learn how to use RSD lite. Its actually really easy. Took me about a half hour to learn and get my phone back.

      • Ozzzmosis

im just saying im gonna accept the ota if i get it. everyone says that i have to sbf back to froyo. im just gonna see what happens. if it bricks, it bricks.

  • http://profiles.google.com/potentialender james netzer

Think this will roll out to the Droid X2?

    • Roberto Taylor

Not right away. They’ll be rolling it out to the DX first and probably in a couple of months they’ll roll it out to the DX2.

      • Droidfan

I would be very surprised it DX2 doesn’t get it within the next week.

        • http://profiles.google.com/potentialender james netzer

That’s what I was thinking. They are so similar. But maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Use us as the guinea pigs then follow the blogs on all the problems then fix it for the X2. Why pay a R&D company when you have us.

  • Wil Dobson

so, i am stock droidx froyo with root access due to z4root. I’m tempted to leave it rooted to see if it updates anyway

    • John

you’ll be fine. it’ll just break root.

      • None

you mean use z4 to unroot?

        • John

naw i mean the ota will break the root.

        • John

      What?

  • Scott

What if you installed Droid X bootstrapper but never booted into recovery? The hijack file was never put in /system/bin, it’s sitting in some preinstall directory.

  • Juan_ortega92

Ima make sure I get the first batch :)

  • Raptor007

So where is the DX2 Gingerbread update?  Do those users have to wait a year to get it?

DL is not under any obligation to maintain confidentiality unless they are part of the MFN.

    • BULL3T

nowhere on this site does it say they have been contacted my Moto to abide by a “confidentiality request”……Moto posted about the soak test on there own forums Droid Life just relays what information they hear. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/pcriz Perry Meg

If you must have the OTA but ends up that it cannot be Rooted (highly doubtful) just Google the term “DROID X SBF” .

    • Tina

It is possible that they will change the bootloader so on that you can’t sbf. Although this would be stupid as they would end up with a lot of warranty claims. Better to wait for a pre-rooted zip, or confirmation that gingerbreak or sbf work

  • http://www.facebook.com/jerryhuster Jerry Huster

Hey Kellex…you said before that if we’re running .588 that we should get the update…what are you hearing about this?

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

No, Froyo unrooted. No other versions. No Roms, no leaks, no root, no excuses.

    • http://twitter.com/pcriz Perry Meg

Unless you are on 2.2.1, you will NOT get it… You must have all stock apps, no custom recovery

      • Roberto Taylor

Do you have any proof to support this? According to P3Droid if you’re running the stock 4.5.595 version (non-rooted) you’ll be able to pull the update.

        • Skeetch79

he tweeted to say the rules have changed, only users on 2.3.340 will get it.

          • Roberto Taylor

Well I’ll be damned! Time to SBF again… :-(

        • http://twitter.com/pcriz Perry Meg

P3DROID later recanted his statement via twitter.. The only path forward for the OTA is to be on Froyo with all apps and stock bootloader.

      • Anonymous

so we have to uninstall clockwork mod?

  • Rccrod

Ok so I flashed the first GB leak and then SBF back to Froyo. Will i get the update or is that still iffy? i never rooted my phone just flashed the first update.  I dont know anything about this kind of stuff hahaha.

    • http://twitter.com/pcriz Perry Meg

If you still have the custom recovery (clockwork) then you probably won’t get it..

      • Rccrod

cool thanks for the info. No i didn’t use clockwork i used one of those applications that sbf’d back to froyo everything is stock i guess. i haven’t restored anything.

    • http://twitter.com/pcriz Perry Meg

If you still have the custom recovery (clockwork) then you probably won’t get it..

  • garrett

serious question. i was rooted running liberty rom on 2.2. i sbf’d using madrstock to stock 2.2 will i be able to recive the update?

    • Anonymous

should be able to, but just curious, is there an update already waiting to take you to 2.2.1?

  • http://twitter.com/SeamusOmid Omid Meradji

Tonight eh? Ah well, waited this long.

  • Anonymous

Why would anyone take this OTA unless they are a developer themselves? Especially if their cup runeth over with rooted goodness….. the leaks are very usable, and rest assured devs will have new and better updates based off this OTA much faster than it took Moto to roll out this “soak test”

  • Eric Callahan

What about non-rooted users running leaks like 4.5.588?  Will we have to roll back too?

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdrianLumani Adrian Lumani

      yup yup yup

    • Ozzzmosis

i’m in the same situation as you.  from what i read no one really know the answer to that. i’m just going to accept the ota and see what happens.

  • http://twitter.com/LiquidRetro Jon M

If I use z4root to unroot a Froyo phone, uninstall super user is that good enough?

    • Anonymous

I don’t think you even have to take it that far.  I’m pretty sure as long as you’re on 2.2.1 (or w/e stock would be) and you haven’t renamed or removed any bloat you should be fine.  I’ve never had a problem accepting the updates they sent out while rooted.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AdrianLumani Adrian Lumani

Just get the leaked version if you want it so bad.  I can promise you there will not be any hidden/amazing feature in the official release compared to the leaked.

    • Jim Dandy

Big shout out to the bootleggers!!

    • http://twitter.com/UbernerdLord Christopher Settle

But I heard the official version comes with a Droid Life pony!

      • http://www.facebook.com/AdrianLumani Adrian Lumani

0_0 OMG CANT WAIT NOW! Flashing back to froyo!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

The only thing extra you may get in the official is more bloatware from VZW :)

  • AtanRaca

@VZWSupport told me this morning that the update would be available today… wonder whats up with that..

    • Anonymous

      11:59:59pm is still today.

    • Anonymous

      11:59:59pm is still today.

  • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

So if you are rooted on Froyo but have not changed one thing, it probably won’t install?

    • Anonymous

Only problem is if you have a custom recovery.  If you are just rooted and that’s it, you should be fine.  You’ll lose root though.

    • Anonymous

As long as you are stock with root, you should still get the update. It will just wipe out your root.

      • Brett Nowak

So I renamed a few bloatware so they wouldn’t load, do I need to rename them before the update?

        • Anonymous

Yes it needs to be back the way it was, stock. Everything.

  • Anonymous

Maybe I should be glad the D2 isn’t first in line for the update. By the time it comes to me, I’ll know whether it can be rooted or not.

Of course, I don’t root now, but I like having the option.

  • Anonymous

I kinda disliked how a ton of readers got the update during the last soak, kinda defeats the purpose >.<

  • http://twitter.com/AndVidReview AndroidVidReview

This is ridiculous!!!!!! Why can’t they just push it out now to everyone!? What are they going to learn over the next 2 or 3 days that they don’t already know from months of testing?

    • Ginosylum

Will you people EVER learn how this works?  Happens every time an upgrade gets pushed… there is a thing called bandwidth.  They can’t push to everyone at once.  They roll it out over a couple days to make sure every phone gets its properly.  Grow up and be patient. We are talking a couple DAYS!

      • CJ

Bravo! All this angst every time an update is imminent is most annoying.

      • EC8CH
      • Anonymous

They could still give us the option to to do this manually instead of OTA.

      • John

true. but many of us want it before they pull it…like they’re well-known for these days

    • Mike

What’s going to happen to you by not getting in the next 2 or 3 days that hasn’t happened from months of waiting? Calm down, they might know more about what’s going on behind the scenes than us.
