Amazon has a limit on the number of “unique” devices you can access your music and files through. I found this out the hard way yesterday and had to call them for support. No where on the site does it mention this but, if you happen to reach your limit, you will find out when you log in an are unable to access your stuff. I believe it said the limit was 8 devices or browsers. From speaking with the guy at Amazon, he said that they go by cookies. If this is the case, Amazon is going to lose a lot of business. It took a couple of hours for their system to reset the number of devices so I could access my files. On top of that, the guy sent me an email (at my request) about the device limit. Unfortunately, he sent me an email about cookies and the fact that they had to be enabled to use Amazon [blah blah] but the article made no mention of the device limit and really was not applicable at all in regards to this issue.

I absolutely LOVED the cloud player until this happened. Here’s hoping Google won’t pull anything shady like that.

mp3 files have no user identifiable information or licensing in them. they are DRM-free (as they should be). With that, whatever you upload, no one can determine if they were legally obtained or not.

If anyone’s looking for a Google Music Beta invite, I found a blog giving them out for free. I figured that the waiting list would be too long, so I tried the blog out, and got my invite about an hour later. Nice.

Would it really matter? I mean, they don’t have full cooperation w/record companies and therefore it won’t sync to any MP3 purchasing services. In essence, wouldn’t they just be releasing a service that allows you to access your files – legal or illegal – through their cloud service?

I’m assuming if you get music illegally then you wouldn’t want to push those files to Google. I could see thousands of people doing that.

Google currently leases cloud space jointly for Picasa, Gmail, Google Docs for $5/yr for 20 Gigs. I can only imagine they will make that same space available to the music service as it currently works across all of their services. With 20,000 songs for free already, plus the $5 I’m paying, I should have plenty of room for my photos, docs, music and everything.

Google seems like it has the advantage over Amazon. Amazon charges $20 / yr for 20 gigs. That’s totally reasonable, but if Google is giving you 20,000 songs for free, and they are currently selling 20 Gigs of storage for Picasa, Gmail and Google Docs at $5/year for 20 gigs… looks like google is the way to go.
