Motorola DROID 3 Parts Show Up at Supplier, Targa Name Listed? (Updated)

An apparent OEM parts re-seller has posted up what appear to be DROID3 screen and top half kits, which we’ve taken and compared to the few D3 pics that are in the wild.  Yep, I’d say these are definitely the same thing, now we’re just wondering why this site is already selling them?  We weren’t expecting to see this device until late summer, but if you and I can already go out and buy pieces for one, I’d say that Motorola might be closer to having this ready than anyone thought.

The odd thing, is that they mentioned the name Targa alongside the DROID3, but we’re almost positive that is the codename for the new Bionic and that the D3’s is Solana…or should we flip flop those?  The Solana has been spotted with a model number of XT862 which would match up much more closely to the naming scheme for a keyboard-less phone like a DROIDX which the original pictures of the Targa resemble.  And as you may recall from the original DROID and 2 we saw model numbers of A855 and A955, so it would be odd for Moto to switch up that series now, wouldn’t it?

Update:  A reader (Cheers Ryan!) has pointed out that the same parts site is showing the original Bionic as having the model number XT865, which is the same number we saw back at CES and is definitely the old one.  Could be legit?

Update 2:  As more readers and our homes at Phandroid have pointed out, the site has gone through and done a full comparison for us of the original DROID, DROID2 and this new version.  4″ screen is definitely go:

And I didn’t think I needed to point this out, but yes, that is indeed a front-facing camera up there and not just another proximity sensor:

And of course, we can always fall back on the theory that this site is simply using the name “Targa” to better place itself in search engines and this is all just one ugly coincidence.

Things just got a lot more confusing.

Cheers Reymond!

This would just about place this right at the end of a lot of OG Droid owners contract period. Seems interesting to me. This would def be a decent upgrade from an OG. Unlike the D2 which was not that big of a leap considering what the OG is capable of.

I’m deciding between this and the Bionic

  • Djstar2k2

ahh i remember when the og was right on time and perfect. i just hope the slurr captive buttons r like the g2x say skinned but run stock hell ill trade lte support for vanilla

  • Bruceleesdad

i dont get: a) why 4g is so important if theyre throttling everybody at 2 or 5 gigs or whatever.
    b) what it matter if the bootloaders locked. wont they root it anyway like they do everything else?

    • Anonymous

Yes, it will still probably be rooted, but a locked bootloader essentially prevents custom roms. A lot of people like to use roms made by the developer community online because they are often faster, include better features, exclude bloatware and other crap people don’t want (like Motoblur), and can improve battery life. They are also much more customizable. There are a lot of advantages to an unlocked bootloader for people who like to seriously make their phones exactly what they want them to be.

I’m starting to think this is the device that could replace my OG.

An LTE D3 would be very very nice

  • cloak420

i wish they would come out with a nexus M for verizon with dual or quad core, front cam, nfc chip, and y not 3d without glasses

  • Anonymous

So can I get one and slap it on my og droid?? :)

Listed as Targa? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

  • http://nottheeternaltao.blogspot.com/ jimstoic

The Droid 3 really needs to be out by July, when everyone who bought the original Droid in November 2009 will be eligible for a subsidized upgrade. If there’s no new keyboard Droid then, there will be defections from Motorola to HTC and Apple.

Wake me up when the bootloader is unlocked.

  • Luketastic1

Min. 1gb ram, dual core, stock (although if it was Motoblur I would compromise and wait for some unlocking…yay LPP) + front facing camera + Physical keyboard = buy for me!

  • PyroHoltz

I don’t think I could have said it better myself (except maybe use LTE in place of 4G, I hate to propagate the mislabeling of 4G).

This phone looks like a total beast, I do want!

I think I’ll be waiting for the DROID3. I love the real keyboard.

  • Ryan

The proximity sensor on the droid1 (and probably d2) is in the upper left. The two holes on the upper right are the light sensor and led

D3 is going to be a beast hoping it will give the Droid line and Android another great push in taking down Apple

  • Bigwalrus23

I’m looking forward to this phone i just fell more comfortable using a physical keyboard than touch

  • Jaime

Since the model number shown was XT862, could it possibly be the GSM version of the droid AKA Milestone 3? I believe the milestone 2 has the name XT720

  • Doc

The source link has further interesting information and comparisons to the OG & 2. Looks like front facing camera is confirmed and not just a sensor. Though I think they are wrong about the resolution. Looks like screen size was enlarged without really increasing phone size!

  • Anonymous

Just looking at this phone, I can tell it’s going to have great quality. It looks really good. I’m impressed so far. Like I always said, no one can touch Moto. ;)

  • Sjm614

Why does the front of whatever this phone is looks a lot like an iPhone???? I smell another law suit…

  • Barczakmark

If it’s unlocked, it might just be the phone that keeps me on Verizon!

  • Anonymous

    It’s not supposed to.

  • Anonymous

Weren’t expecting it until late summer? Reliable insiders have been saying that if it gets released in Q3, that would mean the release date was pushed back. Mid to late Q2 is the estimated arrival at this point, meaning early to mid summer.

    • hkklife

Will it be a EVDO or an LTE handset? This looks to be THE device to snag all of the launch day OG Droid 1 users who are finally able/ready to upgrade.

      • Anonymous

Looks to be 3G only. No LTE.

CAN WE PLEASE STOP SWITCHING AROUND THE ORDER OF THE 4 BUTTONS AT THE BOTTOM?

I swear to god this is so annoying it makes me want an iphone

    • DanSke

I agree, but that will probably never happen, not when manufactures get to dictate what goes where. To be honest though, how many different phones do you use on a day to day basis to where it matters?

And why would you want an i*phone though? I mean its only one button, don’t give them to much credit, you’d have to work pretty hard to screw that up. Hahaha

    • http://twitter.com/bd7349 bd7349

All of the latest motorola phones have the same order of the 4 capacitive buttons, however other the order of the buttons on other manufacturers is not the same as Motorola’s, so it really depends on the manufacturer.

If you don’t believe me, look at all of the latest moto phones. Droid X, Droid 2, Droid Pro, Atrix, and now the Droid 3 and possibly the Targa.

      • http://twitter.com/Will_Sympson Will S.

I prefer the way my OG Droid is .. Back, Menu, Home, Search.. In the perfect order i use the most.

        • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

The only problem I have with my OG’s buttons is when I hand the phone to someone (wife, mom, etc) they seem to constantly hit the “Back Button” when grabbing it. With this layout, they would hit the menu, which is less annoying.

          • The Om3ga Man

There it is! Also when you need the menu button while typing on the keyboard you do not have to reach as far on the D2

          • Ryan C

but on the D1 when slid open, there is a menu button on the keyboard and the back button is the closest touch button. much better than the D2 where you have to reach over 2 touch buttons to hit back. i know there is a back button on the keyboard but still, i much prefer the order and the actual icons of the D1. i like the home and menu buttons better than the weird home and the squares for the menu on the D2.

          • The Om3ga Man

There it is! Also when you need the menu button while typing on the keyboard you do not have to reach as far on the D2

        • The Om3ga Man

They changed it on the D2 due to folks complaining about the button layout when the keyboard was opened on the OG Droid.

    • Anonymous

Agreed, after using my OG droid for a while and when I went to use other peoples android phones it completely threw me off. Although it doesnt make me want an iphone…

    • The Om3ga Man

It’s is the same as the Current D2 so what is the complaint here?

  • The Dave

    This is messed up.

Hopefully a sign of Moto panic to get something released that doesnt suck eggs.

    panic = releases

I can’t help but feel that Apple is going to try to sue Motorola over this design :(

    • DanSke

If its rectangle in shape and has round edges, I’m sure they would because Apple invented the phone of course. >.<

      • Anonymous

They’ll even manage to throw in the slideout keyboard design into the lawsuit -____

  • Ejleverett

So I am going to assume that this is going to be LTE and I am praying to God that this will be Vanilla Android and have an unlockled bootloader AKA A DEV Phone on Verizon!

    • http://profiles.google.com/matt2783 Matthew Seth

I think you’re going to be disappointed… All signs point to it being 3g only, running motoblur and a locked bootloader.

      • The Om3ga Man

Motorola may be seeing the light (and the reduced revenue) and may unlock the bootloaders on the new phones.

I doubt this is lte..have you noticed how thick the lte phones are?

Throw in a keyboard and a decent battery and this phone would have to be massive to be lte.

  • http://twitter.com/killahrey Ramon Toscano

Dang this got posted up real quick, lol.

It does look quite appealing coming from an og droid, but not enough appealing to get rid of my new thunderbolt.

  • Interstellarmind

    looks ugly.

    HTC for the win!!!

OG Droid will always be the best phone I ever had, jsut because it was my first android. but so far, the tbolt is the phone i always wanted!!

  • Anonymous

O yes this is a phone I can look forward to! More pics, more specs coming soon I hope let the HYPEBESTING begin! Now I feel like I have something to look forward to to replace my d1… maybe, as long as its unlocked!

    • Azndan3

Sorry guys, its going to be locked.

      • Anonymous

how can you make that kinda statement when the last motorola device to be shipped was the XOOM and it has the option, direct from the manufacturer, to either keep your bootloader locked or unlock it. Also the last statement direct from Motorola stated that they would like to work with companies (i.e. Verizon and ATT) to come up with a solution so that bootloaders can be unlocked with out compromising security. So unless you have some secret knowledge that you want to share i feel like we have a better chance of a lockable/unlockable bootloader.

        • Anonymous

The Xoom had the option to unlock the bootloader because it was a Google experience device. In order to be the launch tablet for Honeycomb, Motorola had to make concessions to Google’s way of doing things. It’s similar to how things were with the original Droid since it was the first phone released with 2.1. Unless the Droid 3 is the first phone to ship with a new Android OS version, I would expect the bootloader to be locked and for it to be running Motoblur. All indications are that this will likely be the case. This is particularly true if Verizon has anything to say about it.

  • http://twitter.com/Payaso_113 Nightmares

    IS IT 4G?

    • http://twitter.com/killahrey Ramon Toscano

      most likely only 3G

      • http://profiles.google.com/corey.norman Corey Norman

What makes you think it is “most likely only 3G”? My thought is that they need to fill a line-up void with a physical keyboard 4G phone. Plus, it’s dual-core capabilities would be under utilized on 3G.

        • http://twitter.com/bkwolfe Bryan Wolfe

          I bet $100 it is 4G.

          • Sced06

            It’s not 4G

        • Anonymous

The dual core processor has more to do with the OS and the hardware running that than the radio, so it won’t be under utilized on 3G. Reliable insiders have been saying for quite awhile that it will be 3G only. If it hasn’t already been made clear by the Thunderbolt along with the delay on the Bionic, 4G on phones isn’t completely ready for prime time. They need more completely capable phones out there until the kinks all get worked out. If they were releasing nothing but 4G phones in the near future, Verizon’s record of reliability would suffer tremendously as more and more people experienced considerable problems.

And I should point out that these pictures from this parts re-seller are not renders. If you hit up the source link, you can see the backs of all of them…these look as real as you’ll find anywhere.

    FIRST!!

And it does look nice. Hopefully not that ugly blue like the 2nd Droid.

And also, it better be a big step up from the 2nd, because the 1st and the 2nd Droid were way to similar.
