DROID Targa and DROID3 Make First Appearances, DROIDX2 Again as MB870

Now that we’re done hypebeastin‘ the HTC Thunderbolt, it’s time to get back to the family of phones that truly drives us to do what we do everyday.  Some photos of the new DROIDs made the rounds last night and included a new player which has been codenamed Targa.

The Targa picture above appears to just be a mockup, but mockups are usually pretty good indicators of what the final phone will look like.  And this is one of those that we’re hoping is spot on because this phone is hot.  You can see that the plan is for it to be a 4G LTE device on Verizon, has at least a 4″ screen which we’ll assume is qHD, front and back cameras, and a super sleek body that emulates the DX, but a heck of a lot smoother.  No word on official specs or release date, but we’re not buying into the current rumor of it coming out by X-mas.  We’re thinking we could see it way before then.

First look at the DROID3:

Ahhh the 3rd version of the original that started it all.  I’m liking this new thinner top for a slideout.  The D2 was incredibly heavy, so we’re hoping this new version will come in at a much lighter weight while also sporting a 4″ qHD screen.  It appears to have a front-facing camera, but that could also just be sensor.  And what about that new slanted lip?  This is definitely an upgrade over the D2’s look.

And the DROIDX2 again:

Well, we’ve seen pictures of the DROIDX2 already, but now we know for sure that Daytona is indeed the codename for it and the model number is MB870.  It’s also running 2.2.1 with the new Blur at this point, so hopefully that changes to Gingerbread come launch.

Thoughts?  This is a lot to take in on a Tuesday morning.

“it’s time to get back to the family of phones that truly drives us to do what we do everyday” um i’m pretty sure htc phones are just as capable if not superior in certain cases.

We’re talking about the “DROID” brand here. Incredible 2 is included in that. :P

  • Anonymous

Droid 3 with Motoblur buttons? That doesnt sound too good.

    • DBK

Where do you see MotoBlur buttons? The D3 is off.

  • core

i don’t get why there’s not softkeys on the X2.. wait.. i don’t get WHY there’s an X2 when it’s squeezed under the bionic and now the targa there don’t seem to be a need for this device. moto saturated they own line up it looks like.

  • Anonymous

Blur is fine and actually necessary for the non-tech consumer who wants a more integrated experience than stock gives. What we need is an unlocked bootloader for the rest of us to have our way.
At this point I think “Vanilla Android” is this community’s equivalent of “the WiFi’s”. So many people complain about it and never run it and therefor don’t really know what they are saying. No, that custom ROM you are running is not “Vanilla” and if you are stock then you really have no place complaining. /rant

Great working chopping up the info and pics. I have to say I preferred reading this over the Engadget article.

  • dshizzel

The D3 definitely looks wider based on the placement of the soft keys. I held my D2 up next to the picture, and I’m betting it is indeed a 4″ screen.

  • Stephen D

If the Droid 3 isn’t locked, I know my next phone.

  • Stephen D

Who else noticed the Targa’s camera…13mp. I thought the next gen SOCs only supported up to 12mp. Impressive. That bulge is acceptable then.

    • Anonymous

Where does it say 13 MP??????

  • http://twitter.com/Payaso_113 Nightmares

    Meh

This isn’t the droid i’ve been looking for.

  • Gg101

Do we have any idea what differentiates the Targa from the Bionic? Why would moto make 2 large screen LTE devices?

well they just posted a pic of the D3’s keyboard on HowardForums and it has a dedicated number row! I’m defintely think this is my next phone.

    Dear Moto,

Please leave the “Chrome to Phone” to Google. I like my phones black, my Android Vanilla and my bootloader unlocked.

    Michael_NM

PS: Maybe I’ll just tether my X to my XOOM for 4G…

      stupid

I like the way you “signed” yours. :-)

    • ASDF

Yeah you really need to rethink your reply strategy sir, these are getting silly and widely unnecessary. But on an on-topic note; I’m really hoping that the Targa will just be a Bionic without LTE…I live in rural Iowa so I doubt I’ll see 4G until sometime around 2025. But a dual-core, 4+” screen, and beastly camera would be a suitable replacement for my DInc (which I adore).

      • Whoever

The back of the Targa says 4G LTE on it.

not positive, but I believe the rumored specs for the DX2 have it with 3G, dual core, 4.3″ screen and decent camera (not sure if it’s the same or improved from the DX)

    • Anonymous

I feel the same way about chrome and American cars. It makes everything look cheap, not classy.

      • Anonymous

WOO WOO hold your horses, there Timoh lol I agree on most American cars but not the the American Muscle, Camaro, Mustang, and Charger. And, I do agree that Moto is hurting in the device design stage, and need to listen to the consumers :P Yes Chrome to phone :P

  • Mike

I was just saying the other day I wanted some D3 news and here it is. I’d like to see what the keyboard lolike and some specs but so far things are looking good.

  • RW-1

At least they haven’t switched soft button locations again on the D3 … :)

  • http://twitter.com/sparkimus Bret Williams

D3 is looking pretty nice. I don’t know how I feel about that chrome bezel though, reminds me of my old EnV2.

  • Alvinm 77

Not gonna lie this phone is sexy. Moto would get my money if it was unlockable. I think this should of been the DX2 as well. But oh well. Tbolt for the unlocked win!

  • Kevoskee

After getting my thunderbolt on Thursday, I will wait until december to get a more matured dual core phone. Hopefully the Targa is a beast and it looks to have a 13mp cam, CRAZY GOOD

  • GoNoles

Honestly, locked bootloaders is the entire selling point for me. I won’t buy another phone with one.

  • Anonymous

targa looks great. i’d buy this over the bionic based on just looks. but did anyone notice the date on the targa? from last year. so maybe it will be out sooner than later. lets hope!

  • http://twitter.com/DipdCrown Shawn Williams

TARGA REALLY SOUNDS FAMILIAR, hmmmmm, ohyea! TEEEEGGGRRRRAAAAAA!

  • Lucky04

Targa looks cool, but why is the dat eon the phone 1/18/2010? So was this a concept phone, or just an idea? Or is the date simply wrong? I’m sold on the Bionic fo rright now, but i’d love to know more about this device :)

  • Bunie

I see no Front-Facing Camera on the Droid3. I see a speaker, and an indicator light thingie.

  • Mrhug3

Thinking the bionic was gonna replace my DX. Targa pics have me thinking otherwise. Besides, my xoom has stolen the spotlight in my rotation. I just might be able to wait…. Might be able..

  • http://twitter.com/DipdCrown Shawn Williams

The Motorola Targa looks like a beast! Too bad it will most likely have Ninja Blur. But will the boot loader be locked down? Moto needs to be true to the original Droid and return Vanilla Android to the D3.

    • Wes

I’m almost positive the Droid 3 has Blur (the lock screen gives it away, and, if I recall correctly, Moto only uses that style of menu button on phones with Blur).

      • DBK

The D3 is off in the picture above. Where do you see a lock screen? The lock screen is shown for the Targa only. That would mean the Targa has blur, as well as the DX2. And since one of them is supposed to be vanilla Android, that would just leave the D3. Which means I just found my next phone.

Targa should be Christmas, or it’ll be stepping all over the Bionic.

Oh sweet, hope the Droid brand is alive and strong come upgrade time (March 2012 since I got the Droid X at launch), gonna have some amazing stuff out by then so I’m trying to withhold phone envy with these new releases :P cuz at this rate, next year’s stuff will blow all this outta the water!

    • Fresh

Doesn’t next years stuff always blow this years stuff outta the water…?

      • http://twitter.com/Arthur_Mane Arthur Bailey

Although I love my Droid 2. It definitely didn’t blow the Droid out of the water. So in most cases you’d be correct but this time I think not.

You mean the DX3 with quad-core processor and automatic butt wiper?

      • Calculatorwatch

Why would I need an automatic butt wiper? That’s what I have an iphone for :)

Note: I don’t actually have an iphone

      • Anonymous

Little frustrating they’d make minor upgrades to the X and rebrand it as a sequel, who is Motorola trying to copy, Apple? :P Weirder still how they axed the shutter button, I hate using caeraphones without one haha well we’ll see what comes next, til next year I’m more than satisfied with my Droid X :D

I decided to just by a DSLR a long time ago. The Droid 1 by far has the best camera for a phone I’ve ever used. But if I’m reviewing or even wanting to take a real picture, I grab a real camera. Speaking of. I’m in the market for a new DSLR, what would you guy’s recommend?

          • Waknatious

You’ve got to be kidding. The camera on my wife’s DInc is way better than the one on my OGD. Way better. It’s the one thing I’ve never liked about this device.

          • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

Really. I love mine. You have to do some adjustments and dive into menus but you can get some great pics out of it. Their is also a really amazing macro feature. I’m not saying it’s the best camera, just better then I’ve used on a phone.

Please God. Let there be a front facing camera on the x2. LTE will also be nice. Thanks God ;) Really tho, IMO the DX is one of the nicest looking devices to far. Put everything that’s going to be in the Bionic into the x2, I will be the first in line. Or even maybe the DINC 2. We should see it next month since the OG DINC is not in the droid line up anymore. Anyone know if the DINC 2 will be LTE?

Whats the point of the X2?

        • Boarder

I understand that the DInc2 is going to be a 3g version of the thunderbolt. No LTE expected.

Its my next phone. We better get root on it fast though. I hate the new BLUR. Love me some stock!

    • Anonymous

Do you really care what it is called? If you like the Targa then buy that when it is out. The name of the phone doesn’t actually impact the product itself.

      • Anonymous

I think he means they should have just left out the X2 and sold this phone as the successor to the DX, or at least that’s what I would have done. I mean it looks like a upgraded version of the DX, while the DX2 looks pretty much the same.

      • Anonymous

neither does the look of a phone…but you cant convince some people otherwise

But you knew there would be other options when your bought it… It’s not like you thought they would end device production with the Thunderbolt, I hope.

To be less of a dick than my other post though. If you really wanted to upgrade later I’m sure you’ll have no problem selling it off and buying a new android device off contract.
