So… I allowed Verizon to update my Droid to FRG83G. But now I want to root my phone to get tethering. The latest root software on this site seems to only work for FRG01B. Did I screw myself? Is there a newer UniversalAndroot available? Thanks!

Since no one responded, I did my own experimenting, and discovered the answers to my questions above, and offer them here for anyone else seeking same.

I did *not* un-root before accepting the FRG83G update, and it updated without a hitch.

Upon updating, though, my root privileges were lost (as I expected), but I was quickly able to re-root the phone (running FRG83G) using the instructions here on DL:

I’m now happily rooted on my original DROID running (otherwise) stock Android 2.2.2 FRG83G.

Is there any way that you can post instructions on how to root from this version. I already have the update and I want to regain my rooted status. My phone used to be rooted and I miss it.

I just let my OG hang out at the “Your system is up to date” screen for a couple minutes and the new update came through again. Worked this time. On Friday morning when it first tried, it rebooted to 2.2.1 like others are saying. Fine now on 2.2.2.

Yep, that happened to me as well. I had an old update.zip file in the root of the sdcard where I had manually installed a previous update, so maybe that was the problem. Was yours totally stock before the update try?

Same problem for me. Can anyone advise? I went for the manual pull, and it still says my phone is up to date. Rebooted 3 times and still no change.
