Agreed. It has potential but at this point it’s only a little more useful than an iPad, which is itself just a giant ipod touch. This will only be worth its cost once it gets some more apps, ones that are productive.

If you buy this on contract you only have to wait 14 months before you start saving money. You might not be able to buy the first quad core tablets, but you’ll be close. To explain/show my math:

$600 + 24*$20 = $1080
$800 + 14*$20 = $1080

So any more months on the non-contract version and you’ll be spending more than the $1080 for the contract version. I’d say that’s pretty reasonable unless you’re planning to spend $800 a year on tablets. Also, if you can cancel your contract for less than the full value of the remaining months you can save money even earlier. Or transfering your contract over to a new device you bought at full price would probably work too.

What happens with the pre-order is that Best Buy asks you to plunk down 50 on a gift card as a commitment for the pre-order and you can use the gift card towards your purchase or something else.

Fail? HaHa. Rooted Droid X+JailBroken Untethered iPad…I think I can wait. The Droid X does everything I need for On The Go. The iPad does my e-mail and my RSS feeds and general browsing. I think I’m good.

I’m definitely buying one this Summer, but hopefully by that time, the full retail price will be $699 or even $599 with no contract, which would make it even sweeter. But regardless, I’m still going to buy one.
