Charts: The State of the DROID ROM-o-sphere

On Tuesday we asked our readers which ROM they were currently running on their rooted device and almost 800 people responded.   The number of ROMs mentioned blew minds yet also introduced many of you to something you may have never heard of; it was a great success.  The information though, while amazing to look at, quickly became a little overwhelming as the numbers piled up and we were left wondering what to do with it all.  And then one of our readers (@HeliosAI) approached us, asking to take on the task of sifting through each comment, sorting them all by ROM and device, and then displaying them in a set of beautiful graphs.

Ever wanted to know what the most popular ROM was for the original DROID, DROID X, DROID 2, Incredible or Galaxy S?  We have them for you below.

*ROMs that fall under “Other”:

  • OG Droid: Gimpsource [2] MetiCkMod [2] FroyoMod [1] Froyo Kangerade [1] C-ROM [1]
  • Droid X: Runic Blurry [1] Rumm Rx [1] Modified Blur [1]
  • Droid Incredible: Ultimate Droid [1] Uncommon Sense [1] Super Z Enhanced [1] Redemptive Rom [1] Redemptive REVOlution [1] Magnolia [1] Warm two point two [1] Warm Z two point two [1] Carbonite Sense [1] IncRom [1]

Now before you all say it, we understand that we could have also asked people to display if they were “unrooted and stock”, but that wasn’t the poll. This is just a fun way to look at the variety of ROMs that are out in the wild. Enjoy!

Everyone drop a huge “Thanks!” to Jon for putting these together.

And feel free to check out his blog Binary-Impact to show your support.

Im fairly new to the rom game. I wasnt really sure which rom I wanted, but I knew I wanted to run something with some gingerbread in it. In the end I went with the blue rubix 1.9.7 focused with addons which seems really stable. The only thing I didnt like was the fact that I lost my DX camera app but fixed that pretty easily. Pretty darn happy with it hope it gets more love. O yeah one complaint, The battery is 5% off so if it says you have 80% you really have 75.

I was not impressed with liberty 1.5 for d2
imo fission is a much more polished rom at this point in time.
with all the momentum liberty has though, it ought to improve quickly. I suspect I’ll be back after a few more releases

These chart would be considerably more useful if they were column or bar charts.

Its interesting to compare these, especially the variety on the D1 and the DInc, but yet how the Galaxy S’ are almost completely equal between several different ROMs.

  • Brian

This post got me to make the switch from CM7 nightlies (which I want to love, but just weren’t playing nicely with my OG Droid) to Project Elite (which is running like a dreeeeeeeeeeeeam).

  • CyDetrakD

liberty is the closest we can get to cyanogenmod on the d2/dx so its no wonder it wins by a landslide.

I didn’t vote in the poll, but Fission is about 1000x better than Liberty.

This Project Elite sounds awesome. Too bad I don’t have my spare Droid to try it on anymore.

THIS IS WHY ANDROID IS TERRIBLE!!! FRAGMENTATION BLA BLA BLA!!!

  • Brady

    Wow – go Liberty!

I always go back to PE, it’s stable and fast, the coolest thing is how the Dev layed out step by step the proper way to install a ROM. I’ve followed those instructions for every install, and they all run better now. I am currently running Sourcery 2.0, I’m surprised there aren’t more people using it, it brings alot of great innovations to the table…and runs great, fast (1.2 Slayer) and stable (sticking with Sourcery…..for now). If you haven’t tried it, you should. Kudos to all Devs…they do fabulous stuff with the ROMs, everytime something new comes out, I try it…it’s like getting a new phone with every release.

OT, but the newly updated SliceIt! just asked me for superuser permissions. weird. why in the world would a game need those… Did it happen to anyone else?

  • Anonymous

Im surprised Project Elite has such a big following, Ive never used it though. I’m sticking with the CM7 nightlies :D

  • JRummy16

One person is still running Froyo Kangerade.. lol

  • JRummy16

    Haha.. very cool

  • J Dub

Looks like I need to try PE.

  • Edtre36

    no chart for milestone?

  • Thefrugalshopper

I flashed PE thanks to this site and it’s easily the most stable, fastest, and best battery life of a ROM I’ve tried.

  • Anonymous

    What is miui?

  • Sham

Go Liberty. This poll pushed me over the edge to break my custom rom cherry going from stock rooted to Liberty. Totally love it on my DX.

  • SwedishPimple

I’m not rooted (thinking about it), but isn’t it unfair to crown PEte the champion when CM has 26% when you combine 6 and 7?

    • Toine216

True. If a full CM7 was ready to download then you’ll see a totally different poll.

  • Anonymous

Lol Liberty wins by a freaking landslide. Oh and I’m currently running Liberty 1.5 on Liberty yellow :D

  • bigdroiddog

i am upset c-rom did not get much love, its an amazing fast rom,one of the most stable i have flashed since the early days of sholesmod

  • Laz

I’ve been running PE on the OG Droid ever since it was brought up on this site. Best ROM I ever flashed IMHO.

  • Anonymous

Forget that comment, i feel really rey-tod-ed….

  • Anonymous

Very cool, am i missing something or is there no graph for the OG??

  • (v)urphy

Wow, awesome…time to see what Project Elite is all about :)

    • Anonymous

I started the year with PE and went back to it after trying many other ROMs. You just can’t beat the stability.

      • (v)urphy

        Flashing as we speak :)

  • duckphan

WOW! These are amazing! Thanks guys!

  • Phaeacian

Very cool… thanks for putting this together! I didn’t know about Project Elite before, and now I’m loving it… OG Droid for life!

  • SoDroid

PE is great on the OG. Glad to see it getting the love it deserves!

  • Kevoskee

wow, the rooting community for the Droid series (and Galaxy S) is phenomenal. Big thanks to all of the devs out there pumping this stuff out with quality, and huge thanks for Droid-Life.com for bringing more and more users to the “Church of Rooting Goodness” :D

  • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

The Galaxy S results blow my mind with how evenly distributed they are.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Trent-Russell/11831390 Trent Russell

you do realize that was 12 people right? But props because your last name is heuer.

  • Anonymous

I would be interested in seeing the percentage of those who DIDN’T root their Droid (OG) versus those who did. This chart doesn’t appear to include that.

    • Anonymous

Because anyone with an OG Droid that’s read more than three articles on DL has it rooted.

      • Anonymous

it didnt even take me 3 articles…

Actually, I don’t have it rooted. I did with Z4 before the newest build broke it, but was just stock and overclocked. I haven’t really missed it enough to go through the procedures (as my computer is a Mac and apparently that just doesn’t work).

It’s cool, but my phone still works great, and I’m not into theming and stuff like that.

Droid X Liberty (1.5) was too over customized from me. I didn’t mind my phone said Verizon Wireless. Why does it have to say Liberty? Yea I know I can change it, but I shouldn’t have to. It’s funny, we all hate on Blur, but when I go back to the stock camera gallery and camera apps, I want to run for the hills, I almost forgot how terrible they are.

    • http://twitter.com/AstronautJonze Tony D

That’s why I switched over to Apex. Don’t get me wrong I love Liberty, but little things like having an incoming call in your cardock not switch to landscape mode made me want a little more blur in my ROM. Now that I think of it, that was actually the only reason I switched to Apex. I’ll probably switch back if Liberty adds landscape support for incoming calls in the car dock.

BTW does anyone know of an app or script that will force an app to switch into landscape? i have the SiriusXM app and the one thing that sucks is the lack of landscape.

      • Mort

I’m really surprised that there’s not a mention of ApeX in this article.

I can’t believe your actually complaining about the verizon wireless/liberty customizable text?!?! what the H is wrong with you?
complaining? if i was a dev….i’d just walk away right now from it all cuz of r-tards like yourself.

  • http://twitter.com/cgibby Corey Gibson

There is a reason PE has the biggest slice. It’s just plain awesome.

  • Anonymous

I knew I like PE for a reason. Apparently so does everyone else.

So much variety for the OG!
