HTC Thunderbolt Hands-on Video and Gallery

We just spent some extra quality time with the HTC Thunderbolt and are drooling over the display on this thing.  The Super LCD screen on this almost looks like it can’t be real.  We thought it was a dummy unit at first glance until we saw the Sense clock flip over.  It feels amazing in hand, is still ridiculously fast even without a dual-core processor, and should be taken seriously.  We should point out that the device was actually running on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, and while the video doesn’t show it was as fast as advertised.  Oh, and I think you’ll enjoy the new Sense experience.

Full video and gallery after the break.

Wow, this was the first time I have ever heard anyone from DL’s voice. Oh anyone else pre-register for this phone yet?

  • Interstellarmind

i’ll wait for a phone that has the following:

    4.3″ screen
    4g LTE
    dual core chip
    1 gb ram
    8mp rear, 5mp front
the sleek design styling of OG and/or DX

my money stays firmly in my wallet until then (winter 2011?)

my two cents on bionic: ugly and chunky looking, but the real deal breaker is the 512mb RAM.
thunderbolt: looks good, kickstand (is this patented by HTC? moto needs to get a kickstand on its phones ASAP) rocks,… but no dual core is a deal breaker.

Still love this phone over blur and it compares to the bionic….1926 to 2486 benchmark scores…. THATS SINGLE CORE TOO!!!!

Here is my question: Is 4.3 inch screens the ‘new’ standard? Being none of the new Verizon phones are of the 3.7-3.8 inch variety can we assume they’ll be keeping HTC Droid Incredible around for quite some time? Maybe the DInc ‘ll get the New Sense and Gingerbread!!!

  • Murphy

What happened to the HTC Lexikon??

    • Anonymous

good point….was wondering that too, but i like the thunderbolt better.

  • Anonymous

Can we get some spec’s up on the blog? Processor, RAM, storage, Screen type, Software, connectivity, you know all that stuff we need to know to decide. I know some of it is up there but lets get ALL of it up there.

  • Thesaber2000

Why on earth are none of these phones running gingerbread(2.3)??? i’m very dissapointed. if only my OG Droid had a tegra2 and 4g then it would be great.

  • Ajseiser

Yes, 4G will be fast. BUT, if you still have a crappy processor and crappy memory I find it hard to believe that it will be faster than my D1 running at 1266htz. It will be a cold day in hell when I give up the OG.

  • Allaroundglobe

Even after watching all this HYPE and being soooo impressed with this phone, now I’m considering just waiting even longer for 4G to come to my hood (location) and just getting the HTC Incredible for a discounted price. I mean, whats the point if I don’t have 4G right? It doesn’t seem worth it, yet. I mean, I’m upgrading from a LG Dare, soooo…idk, I’m still torn!!

    No front camera?

    • viewthis66

it has one. top right corner next to the long speaker… i think.

    • Tyler Piercy

Yes. All Verizon LTE phones have front cam.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Spyrojoe Brad Brock

Dual core be damned! This phone is just so much sexier than the Bionic and will definitely get me to break up with my iPhone.

  • Octotron

Ok.. so this is the one for me.

  • Napoleon

I sooooooo PASS on this phone… I think I will hold out for the BIONIC or maybe I’ll just jump ship to Sprint and wait out for the new edition of the EVO!!!! Verizon all I can say is SMH!!!

  • Napoleon

Would it have killed HTC to include HDMI along with DLNA on the Thunderbolt?!? I mean sheesh not everyone has a DLNA TV or DLNA router to use this feature!!!!

    • Anonymous

there are some micro usb to hdmi cords though, im still trying to find one…. :(

  • Anonymous

sorry double post, guess my fingers got happy

When will this phone be avaliable for purchase?

    • Mike

DL and Engadget both report that VW told them “first half, possibly as early as March”. I don’t really consider the end of March as early, but that’s what they said.

  • Anonymous

Droidlife this is by far the best hands on video of this phone I’ve seen thus far. In fact, I was not impressed with it til viewing this video. You guys rock, thanks for the great coverage

  • Anonymous

Google logo on back, viewed it in a engadget hands on video

  • Amanda

Is that metal on the phone?? cant really tell..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=545634778 Alan Paone

Its a shame it lacks the edginess of the incredible. that thing was cool looking.

  • Anonymous

No dual core, no higher res display and no hdmi. This should have came out last summer with the Droid X. It’s like HTC only waited for LTE and nothing else. The Bionic is the one to get on Verizon, at least right now. And the Motorola Atrix is the best Android, scratch that, the best smartphone to date.

    • angermeans

Why is the Atryx the best phone? It has a smaller screen than the Bionic and is only an HSPA+ phone plus not to mention ATT really messed that up with that horrid launcher and I am willing to bet they will gimp the phone and no downloading of anything outside the market. Plus do I even have to mention ATT and how far they are behind they wont have their next gen LTE in place until next year this time. Is all that really worth 512 more RAM I think not, but I guess to some.

      • DBK

Finally! I was afraid no one understood that. You sir have just redeemed my faith in humanity. :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/borgey401 Andrew Borges

        I agree with you 110%

  • Anonymous

What is with htc spelling out “menu”. It’s kind of annoying that they insist on being different with their soft keys

  • Anonymous

everyone is making a big deal about dual core. this phone is a thing of beauty, im so ready to ditch tmo worthless ass and get this sexy beast for myself.

    • DBK

Considering what phones are capable of now and what they will be capable of down the line, that extra core is going to be needed.

I agree that this is a nice phone and is great for those getting into the Droid/Android game.

      • Anonymous

then again i do have til august for my tmo contract to be over, if htc come out with another phone with the same phone design, same display size with better spec and htc sense then that will be another story. let see what they bring out for mwc.

        • DBK

Agreed. Although I could do without the kickstand. :)

  • Dellbx

Does it have Bing or not?

I hope it is Google all the way…

    • Dellbx

Never mind…just saw the Google search widget…we’re good… dumping my DX for the Thuderbolt

  • http://twitter.com/gb3 George Burnett III

    Drooling!!!!1
This is one sweet piece of hardware… I just wished it had physical buttons like the DX.

    • Dellbx

And I just hate the physical buttons on the DX…go figure…

    • Anonymous

The physical buttons on mine are starting to wear down

      • Erasmussen14

Ditto, I can barely turn my screen on and off on my DX.

However, I’m gonna sit on it for awhile, the phone does everything I could ask of a phone to do, and getting something slightly faster would be nice, however the advantages would be outdated in a weeks time.

  • Cgmartin33

Lmao…was that Tim doing the Vannah White and Kellex shooting? Im soo fricken jealous of you guys right now. You guys must be in heaven. I am impressed by the smoothness of this phone. With all the “dude” and “sweet” comments it sounds like you guys are too…just dont get hammered and get matching back tattoos (what does mine say? Duuude) ;)

  • Mrpicolas

as i see alot of mixed comments on this phone those of you that wanted a 4.3 inch device on vzw with an unlocked bootloader and the new sense from htc this is a viable choice this phone is the evo as it should have been and on a great network so if the tegra 2 hype isnt your thing this device should be on your list depending on data pricing for 4g lte i may be picking this device up as always stay tuned for more goodies from ces as we tackle tabs tomorrow

    • Anonymous

Anyone else read that and kind of “hear” Mrpicolas saying it all in one breath? Maybe fainting from lack of oxygen afterwards? :-)

      • Anonymous

Haha now that you mention it I realized my reading sped up towards the end there. My brain needs periods man!

    • angermeans

I have to say I agree with you this phone is a nice piece of hardware and if Tegra 2 wasn’t announced this would be the phone everyone is talking about, The dev support will be great as it is a known processor and a lot of ROMs will be interchangeable where as the Bionic will most likely be locked down. This phone will sell well for sure and this and the Bionic will bring Verizon and their LTE network through the first half of the year. I will also be picking this phone up and depending on how blur works (and I sure hope they spent more time making Blur a lot less buggy) I will be picking up the Bionic as well.

      • Anonymous

Ditto, this will be my 1st half of the year device, by late summer early fall hoping more dual core options prevail.

  • Cgmartin33

    Lmao!

  • Anonymous

sounds like someone is using a nikon d3100? continuous auto-focus hd video ay?

  • Waknatious

Wait…. why does this say “even without a dual core processor”? If you google “HTC Thunderbolt specs” it’s listed almost everywhere as a Tegra2 device. WTF? That’s a deal breaker for me… I’m not buying something that I have to use for 20 months and by default WON’T RUN HONEYCOMB. #fail.

    • Anonymous
      • Waknatious

Ok thx, but I’m not your “foo”, son.

    • Anonymous

YOUR WRONG! HONEYCOMB FOR PHONES! HAS NO SPECIFICATIONS…THIS PHONE AND ALL THE 4G PHONES JUST RELEASED WILL GET GINGERBREAD AND HONEYCOMB!!!….BTW THIS PROCESSOR IS THE 2ND GEN, A LOT FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT WITH BETTER GRAPHICS, AND CAN RUN AT 1.2 GHZ IF HTC DECIDES TO UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE OR YOU HACK IT…ITS BUILT AS A 1.2 GHZ THOUGH.

  • joker

This phone looks garbage and the screen looks garbage along with that what resolution is that it looks worse than my og droid

    • Anonymous

      y are u so negative to this, your like a moto fanboy…and i have a dx…i had the incred….it was perfectly fine…

    • DBK

Were you watching the same vid we were? This new version of Sense is amazing. The screen itself look great, and the resolution looks fine. Your either blind or stupid (or both).

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

The new sense whats new to it? It is the same thing as my girlfriends incredible? Please tell me washed out looking screen.

    • Anonymous

you must be joking, no pun intended

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

I agree releasing this phone without dual core is a mistake and the new sense looks nothing special my gf incredible does the same thing with profiles and what not. I think the worst part about this is HTC is so lazy that they just gave VZW the evo. I dont know but as a consumer and an HTC fan this is bogus this phone should of came out a long time ago maybe september october. But oh well thats why we have choices right and for people to say your a fanboy is stupid everyone is entitled to their opinion you all must be HTC fanboys? right or stupid or blind (or both) He is not saying for anyone else not to buy it. It is just his opinion. To be honest look at that screen really?? I dont think this phone is something to hooray about it is alright but just doesn’t seem like HTC focused on anything to upgrade it enough. Like I said Evo was awsome and if it would of came out along with the evo on VZW would of been a lot different

  • Anonymous

does anyone think there will be another phone like this with dual core in a few months?

  • Anonymous
  • Anonymous

what is the resolution? and the processor (be specific)?

I’d like to see it overclocked. :)

    • Anonymous

wvga, 2nd gen ms……snapdragon 1.2 ghz processor ONLY RUNNING AT 1 GHZ….AND THOSE ARE THE BENCHMARKS WITHOUT THE EXTRA .2….CAN BE PROVIDED IN AN UPDATE….OR OF COURSE HACKING….

      • Anonymous

        i like it. :D

  • Anonymous

Hey, are there any cables of micro usb to hdmi i could use when i get this phone….my droid x has micro hdmi….this doesn’t and my even though new…tv…doesn’t have dlna…..it’d just be easier if someone could point me in the direction….the samsung cables…would they work on this? or a converting cable? But otherwise i love this phone!!!

  • DBK

I gotta say that new Sense looks pretty sweet…..

  • Jpippo4

Am I the only one who thinks the BIONIC (I quiver in fear when I hear that) looks ugly, bulky and cheap? I mean I’m not buying phones because they look cool cough i*phone cough, but all the other droids are really cool looking phones.

But the T-bolt’s sense UI is looking pretty nice.

    • Anonymous

look, good things come in time…..bolt….metal…everything except no dual core— though 2nd gen snapdragon….so its very fast….768 ram so very fast….new sense….dolby sound…kickstand…..sense….

The bionic….has accessiories…though i don’t know about the bolt….tegra 2….faster ram….hdmi out…..blur…but thats worse than sense…i mean its better than my droid x but not as good….but im getting both from selling my x and upgrading….

The lg phone….its really good, just im not lg or samsung or frankly motorola as all seem to DELAY updates so badly….htc has sense and they still push updates first….please don’t gynx me lol….

The sammy phone has actually everything and you can download movies and music….but….the form and materials….not the best….otherwise i would buy all of them if i could…

      • DBK

An even more god-awful version of Touchwiz (which I didn’t think was possible) is the UI of choice for the Samsung Unknown……will pass on that one.

      • joker

really becasue my droid gets updates pretty quick there buddy

        • Anonymous

yah but thats stock android….thats not what im talking about….and on new and old phones moto has decided to opt out 2.1 to some…i mean im still buying the bionic and the bolt regardless…..just i dont like blur and to me htc is the fastest updater…

      • Anonymous

How much do you think.the droidx would sell for, just curious? Maybe, ill sell mine

        • DroidzFX

          Im……not………sure……….maybe ……….300$

          • Anonymous

            cool, thank you

    • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

I’m not in love with that phone. I think they should have tried to make it look more like a Droid X. Not like a cheap but rugged phone.

    • KleenDroid

Motorola veered off the path after the Droid 1 with their awkward experiment with Blur. Moto has a knack of crushing a phones potential with their attempts of improving it. HTC seems to have a better grasp on the situation. Motorola is quickly becoming second or third pick. Droid branding is hugely successful but Motorola is doing their very best to destroy it. Google publicly made a statement that they believed those that wanted control of their phones with root and rom flashing should have it. Motorola is the only one that has an encrypted bootloader preventing the freedom that Google wants us to have.

I loved Moto with my Droid 1, then they replaced it with a D2, and I now have an X. Because of their encrypted bootloader I can’t help but feel I’ve gone backwards. Moto dropped the ball big time because they had me hypnotized with the Droid branding and of course my complete enjoyment of the D1. But I am no longer a happy Moto customer and look forward to the new phones that HTC and Samsung bring to the table. All phones seem to have a better user experience than Moto phones now. And most importantly they don’t have encrypted bootloaders.

Way to ruin a good thing Motorola

      • tommytmt

Wow kleendroid that was an amazing statement! Pretty much summed up exactly how I’m feeling about Motorola recently …

      • Anonymous

Except the G2 has an even more locked down version of a boot loader.

    • guest

I always thought the iphone is ugly

    That was pretty fast.

  • Kiriuskris

I still feel heartbroken about this phone. I had such high expectations for it.

  • http://zombine.com Dr. Zombine

If I had any UI slapped on my phone from the start, it would be Sense. From only being meh before, I really like this phone from what I am seeing.

Don’t know how I feel about no dedicated camera button.

  • Colereini

Does anyone know if it has swype pre installed?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Upstreammiami Ronald Valdes

dude what camera did you record this with ?

  • Murphy

I wonder if at launch will it get the DROID moniker. If memory serves me right the Incredible came DROID-less until they updated the packaging. Hmmm, it’s definitely either this or the DROID Bionic. I’m not sure about the name though….ugh decisions, decisions. Dual Core w/ Blur or Snapdragon with Sense….

Friend: “Hey what phone is that?”
    Me: “It’s the DROID Bionic!”
    Friend: “Bionic??”

    • http://www.facebook.com/borgey401 Andrew Borges

nope you’re completely wrong. it always had droid branding.

      • Murphy

I realize that…but when it first came about it was just “HTC Incredible”, even said so when it booted up. Correct me if I’m wrong but a new boot animation was added to reflect the new branding.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SGR7XA63VN7HSVJJOP7WTTKTCQ Michael

          What dictated the DROID branding?

      • Joemega2010

it was just HTC Incredible, verizon decided to include it in the “Droid” franchise at the last minute, and after the shipping delays, it began shipping with a “Droid” packaging, while my Incredible, which was bought on release day included the standard Verizon box.

    • Timbabwe

I hope it does… I think it will be lame if only Motorola makes DROIDs… HTC has been there since the beginning with the DROID Eris!!!

  • Jpippo4

I can’t believe I’m considering buying a phone that doesn’t have droid in the name…. This may be the one.

  • Ugarocks2012

AWESOME i want one now. my incredible is finally outdated

    • Bwbecker

haha. I just finished the video and had the EXACT same thought. This is the first phone that would make me consider ditching my Dinc

      • angermeans

I second that and I will miss this Droid Inc as it has been a great phone and is still (with Verizon network) the best phone out right now. The only phone I loved more than this (and just slightly) was my Nexus One.
