Why in the galaxy would an R2-D2 have a physical keyboard? That's soooo Old Republic.

it's actually $149 in Verizons BJ's stores and remember, it comes with the multimedia dock for home. Put a case on the ugly thing and save yourself $50 on a Droid 2 and $30 on a dock

I am a huge Star Wars fan. I grew up watching the movies, reading the books, comics, etc. I also own a Droid X and LOVE the Android platform.
Evidently, no one did any marketing research. These phones are UGLY and I don't care what bells and whistles you put into them. They will not sell. They would be better off giving them away – if people will even take them.
I am no marketing expert, but why not a theme more relevant to the modern age? Why not find a current movie, design a phone to be used on set to feature in the film, give a few away at the grand opening, and then release that model for Christmas? I think that would definitely have gone over better.
Ah well….these R2D2's will collect dust no matter what the price.

$200 for the phone that comes with the docking cradle is a great value but I am not sure they marketed it the right way. The general public most likely didn't know it came with it, why it was $50 more than the regular, didn't want to pay more for just a star wars theme and just went with the regular instead. Not to mention the Global coming out kind of killed both but really doomed the R2D2. The Global launched for $200 and that dropped the original D2 to $150 leaving the R2D2 at $250, so this only made sense and should have been done sooner. But again they fail cause I personally would take the Global capability and 1.2Ghz CPU over an older model with included docking cradle.

I think that VZW marketing underestimated the “geek/shaming” factor. It's one thing to like Star Wars, as I do, but it's quite another to want to display it like some kind of perceived geek-badge on your cell phone. In an adult/professional setting, it wouldn't enhance credibility. They should have just sold R2-painted phone cases or skins/decals, so that those who don't mind the badge can get it. And those who change their minds can remove it from their $200-600 investment when they get sick of it.
