Goodbye Original DROID, Officially “Out of Stock”?

Sad, sad day indeed.  The original Motorola Droid is now listed as “out of stock” on VerizonWireless.com.  We had received word that this had happened a few days ago, but were unable to produce the same image and continued to hold out some hope that it was a regional thing.  It’s not.

It was a good almost 9 month run wouldn’t you say?  Time for it’s replacement.  A locked down beast.  The Droid 2.

Cheers Zer0 Cool!

  • Jevfr

Still shows in stock for me.

  • So what's happens with an insurance claim now if u r unfortunate enough to have one? Don't tell me we r sol. Do I. Now have to treat my droid like a new born baby.

    • Olgarcu7

No when you do an insurance claim, they have a different inventory than big red. Called today and told them i lost my phone and i would have to do an insurance claim and if they still had some in stock for me to get a replacement or would i be getting a different phone. The rep informed me that the insurance had plenty in stock, they were just out at the store.

    • Cpt Mike Beard

Yes. So shake it briskly when it won't stop making noises.

  • Ketto

Is it even confirmed that the Droid 2 will be locked up like the Droid X?

  • we need some taps playing during this article

  • Jmswim35

When I go to the website it doesn't say that it is out of stock…?

  • Justin

    4 out of 5 stars?
“i only gave it 4 stars cause it can't please my girlfriend”

    • Mine does. ??? Have you downloaded *ildroid? 😉

      • Justin

        I checked it out, interesting

  • dylan84

Still in stock for me in Asheville, NC

  • dannyyang524

Damn. It was this phone that started the big Android explosion! Sad to see it go! 🙁

  • Sooner or later, Motorola has GOT to pull their heads out of the asses and quit encrypting their bootloaders. They'll only learn once we refuse to support them with our money, choosing HTC, LG, Dell, or Samsung Android devices instead. If we don't send Moto a message, Droid 1 will be the last truly open-source phone from Motorola. {{-_-}}

    • Justin

please motorola, save us from ourselves!

  • jiggaman508

I feel like the droid is the godfather of all android devices lol….i will take my droid to the grave 🙂

  • Stephen D

:'( I still love my Droid. I won't give it up until the Droid Pro comes out.

  • Scottholstein

So the Droid X will never be unlocked? Not even a hack? Can anyone speak accurately to that question?

    • Justin

      Maybe yes no

  • Jus4mee

    I'm in LOVE with my DROID………My Big DAdDy!!….my 1st.

  • I will always treasure the times I had and will have with my D1. I feel like there wont be another phone like it. As far as the fun factor is concerned. I do hope Verizon brings some sort of galaxy phone to the table

  • RIP!!!!

  • Littlemanjdm6

    Chicago still has them

  • Ramelo27

I Love my Droid 1. Holding on to it for a long while. always will be loved amd in our hearts.

  • …playing Taps…
    goodbye to a great phone….

  • aczm1988

Ok im not sure what the deal is but i just got this screenshot from verizon.com and the droid1 (at least for me) is not sold out ppl. Heres a link to the screenshot

  • Littlemanjdm6

Still in stock online and at the stores – Chicago.

  • AnDroidSepTIX

Im a little surprised they dont keep the phone available for a cheaper entry level introduction to a smartphone. Basically to get people not willig to make the full jump to the newest smartphone. But its make business sense just to force people to buy the newest most expensive phone and not leave them with an option. But my droid continues to live through my girlfriend. I just switch the roms on it and it drives her crazy.

  • kluuuz

in mexico the droid 1 have like 3 weeks…. i contract it for 2 years 🙁 lol

  • balthuszar

i'm in eastern iowa, and i dont get the “out of stock” image when i go to http://www.vzw.com

  • tiptoptommy

    Noooooooooooooooooo it cant be!!!

  • I just got my droid end of Jan now droid 2 coming out at this rate I predict droid 3 coming out early 2011

  • Wow a sad day indeed! I just got a replacement Droid 1 on Friday. At that time the Verizon Rep told me there was 1,000 in stock.

  • Tjs

    Real nice.
Less than a year. I got mine last November and now with over a year left on my contract, which I pay insurance on,I won't be able to get a replacement Droid. Just some something less.
I was born with an a**hole. I don't need Verizon.

  • JosueD

The Droid to me is still awesome, Its my 1st Android phone, It showed me want Android is really capable of, I think we can all say Droid1 4 Life!

  • Neo1738

    2 things

  • Porschephile2k3

Off topic, but I finally turned to the dark side and rooted. Flashed in FRG22 and said I would give Froyo one more chance. That is after finally finding a PC where RSD Lite recognizes my phone. Flashed in the 2.1 update 1 SBF file from Pete's website, got nervous since I couldn't reactivate my phone, deleted data and cache, breathed a sigh of relief, got my 2.1 back (yay). I kinda hesitated but what the hell, followed great instructions from kellex on flashing in the SP Recovery SBF file and never looked back.

I was then on the fence whether to flash a rooted 2.1 or 2.2, so I decided to go with FRG22. I'll say this, after all the complaints I posted here about Froyo, FRG22 and FRG01B are night and day! My phone seems to be running cooler than it did with the OTA build. Battery level seems to be better too, but speedwise, I think they'[email protected] the same. I woke up this [email protected] to check the temps and my phone was at 67 degrees when normally or would be at 85 while in sleep mode. Plus now I have my Ninja buddy in my app drawer. I have yet to see how everything else works, but so [email protected]
Looks like Froyo and I can be friends after all. /me shakes Froyo's hand.

  • Lincoln, NE has still got it.

  • Evermour

I woke up happy and now im sad = i wont forget the DROID. It was the best phone i had ever had. I felt like a kid opening his presents when i had mine. It was awesome.

  • Guy Franco

good by my friend go with the robotic Gods 🙁

  • Still allowing me to add it to my cart here:

It sees my location as Tampa, FL.

    • droidaholic

      Same here: North Carolina

do you think they're doing it by areas or something? were both in the east

    • You are able to add it to your cart but verizon wont ship it out to you. We do not have any in stock anymore

  • Yeah but have you ever read up on how much these phones cost to produce? Not a whole lot.

  • Swould333

Still shows up on when i pull up the verizon wireless site in Winston-Salem,NC.. maybe it is a regional thing or they haven't updated the site here….

  • Gardner24

I just checked verizon and its not gone. LONG LIVE DROID

    • scruggie

  • AndroidAddict

  • ugh long live the droid but I may just trade for a DX or DI when my droid gets lost

    • Pbonello90

      Same, I'm in Minneapolis

  • snafu009

So what will the next Android dev phone be, what with the Nexus One and the Droid now dead?

    • The nexus one IS the next dev phone.

    • Why should there have to be a dev phone? They should ALL be dev phones. I hate how Motorola is telling its customers who wish to use custom ROMs to look for another phone. Epitome of arrogance; very Jobs-like. {{-_-}}

      • Anonymous

I don’t think everyone wants root access to the phone. I think some people like the custom Android skins (Sense, Blur, Sony’s UI, Touchwiz, etc.). I prefer full control and vanilla Android which is the general formula a dev phone adheres to. I, for one, do not mind the variations that exist, and I will look for my next phone to have stock Android with the easiest “hackability”.

        • That’s a silly argument. No disrespect to you but the fact that even ONE PERSON in the Android customer base wants a fully customizable phone is proof that Motorola needs to be servicing that one customer. Motorola is shutting people out in the cold, and most of the Android community has done the same. Don’t do that. That’s what iFans do whenever Steve Jobs makes a decree. We can’t become that. We can’t reduce people who prefer the root to second-class Android citizens. That would make us no better than the Evil Empire. We’re supposed to be the Jedi Order. The more Jedis we have on our side, the better. Motorola needs to either realize that or be removed from the Open Handset Alliance. How dare you tell customers to buy from another manufacturer? {{-_-}}

  • eddieonofre

Sadly the Original Droid the one that started the Droid revolution and that launched android to popularity is now out of stock. ANd believe me dudes seems that with all this boot loader locks and blur and skin over stock there wont be a phone that truly replaces the Original Droid. I'm happy with my droid and will stay with it until the end of the end of its days

  • Gardner24

I will always love my original droid sorry to see it go. 🙁
There probably won't ever be another phone like it with open bootloader free for custom roms

  • scruggie

does this mean ausrion is now giving droidx or incredible for broken droids? my droid has been broken for about a month now and ive been waiting on the droid x to exchange it

    • Robsmith Nikon

I remember when insurance for a cell phone was $1.00 a month… I wonder what happened.

      • ANTONkoolaid

Umm what happened is we are dealing with $600 mini computers now and not brick Nokia handsets.

        • Robsmith Nikon

I was referring to the obvious insurance fraud which has driven the cost of insurance up. Replacement cell phones have always cost a ton of cash. It doesn’t really matter… it was an idle thought.

          • scruggie

for the record i in no way am attempting fraud, my charging port is broken and doesnt charge so i had to buy an external battery charger to get by until they start exchanging the droidx…just clearing that up

          • scruggie

alright guy…just to clear it up, i dont care if you care….just clearing that up

    • ANTONkoolaid

Going through the same situation as you.. as soon as someone can confirm Asurion is replacing the Droid with Droid X I'm pulling the trigger. I'd definitely prefer Droid 2, however.

      • scruggie

why would you perfer the droid 2?..to me the keyboard just gets in the way i never use it

        • ANTONkoolaid

To each his own, I suppose. I love the keyboard and use it over any on screen option. Basically, I love my Droid and Droid 2 is basically the exact same thing with a 1 Ghz processor. Would definitely not mind that 8 MP camera, HDMI out and 4.3″ screen though…

          • My Droid 1 has a 1.2 GHz processor.

    • I will let you know shortly…just called in a replacement on my Droid yesterday. Should be shipping this week. Fingers crossed!

      • scruggie

good luck, your braver than me

      • Baked14

I got a replacement droid friday. It was one of those “like new” Droids. I still havent used it. im selling it for $350. I think im gonna get the droidx

        • Ibowtoandroid

You do know that if you don’t return the old one, they charge you $550, right..?

          • Los

just tell it was stolen my bros phone had a broken screen and he sold the phone to one of his friends and told assurion that it was stolen over the border

          • JohnPA2006

I’m pretty sure that wont work, when you tell Verizon the ESN upon trying to activate it for someone,
Verizon reps, will see in their system lost or damaged.

    • A1texn

They generally replace broken phones with rebuilt stock. I had an original Q (silver) that was no longer available, so when I lost it in the lake I was expecting a black one, but they sent me a rebuilt Silver Q.

      • scruggie

yeh i get that. there was a report on here a few weeks ago about asurion running out of droids to rebuild and with them going out of stock theyd turn to giving incredibles/droidxs to replace the broken or lost droids

    • Gigi Stickel

No. Assurion is giving the Devour or the Iris or something….lesser phones. So frustrating. So not cool. You pay for insurance expecting to receive replacement. Wish someone would be accountable. How can it be right that a Verizon corporate store can still sell the Droid at their store…but the “only company” that insures, Assurion, is out of stock for possibly 6 weeks! It should be illegal to still sell the phone until the insurance company has stock of replacement. They will not give you Droid2 or DroidX. I have called 5 times already today. Anyone interested in filling a class action lawsuit against Assurion/ Verizon Wireless? Seems like a waste of time over a $500 phone…but may be entertaining to take a stand against such business practices.

  • First, and this sucks also
