I tested the DX over the weekend and was shocked at the sluggishness compared to my D1/1G/2.2. I think removing the bloatware and of course Froyo will fix most of the problems.

I see no reason that the folks who prefer Verizon shouldn't have the same level of control should they desire it. Sure, plenty of people don't give a rat's ass about custom ROMs but likewise, most are happy to keep whatever version of OS, browser, etc.

Great work! I've got an Evo but the Droid X is another excellent phone and I see no reason that the folks who prefer Verizon shouldn't have the same level of control should they desire it. Sure, plenty of people don't give a rat's ass about custom ROMs but likewise, most are happy to keep whatever version of OS, browser, etc. comes with their computer. For the rest of us who like to always be updated and running everything we can, custom ROMs are a godsend.

I've never rooted a droid. All my friends have done it to theirs. Will this brick my phone, due to the eFuse, that was mentioned a while back or will it be similar to the way that was figured out recently?

If it's safe I am totally going to do this when I get it on the 8-4 release

Ok – I'm new to the Android world – but what good does a rooted phone do if you are unable to use it because of an eFuse switch? If the eFuse switch prevents you from using a different ROM what is the point of rooting it

I hope you arent holding your breath for that. Milestone hasnt been hacked yet, and its been over 7 months. Rooting it was always expected, just like Milestone.

It’s awesome news for the owners of the Droid X. Now about that pesky custom rom thing
It doesn’t surprise me that its AllDroid and XDA since the X isnt an HTC device, and thats what XDA seems to mostly develop for.

Not trust something open? Open source just means that people don't hijack backdoors. The security in Linux is second to none. Apache servers, google... Most web stuff is open source. As for Viruses on linux, because to run anything that could harm your system requires permission, you have to give access via a password every time. This is why viruses wont work. Also, by default ports in Linux are close till you give permission to open them. This is why port sniffers have a hard time with linux.

Long story short, Linux default security is very tight and because of the permissions it is hard to allow a virus to run. The fact that it is open source means when a problem is found anyone can fix it. Makes it nice not to have to wait for a service pack to fix issues.
