Finally, the Droid Life Incredible has been Rooted

The unrEVOked team has released a one click root/recovery tool for the Droid Incredible that makes the process pretty seamless.  Well, once you have proper drivers and other prep steps taken care of that is.  So while we had a few minutes today (sounds weird on the Droid X launch day right?) we decided to take the plunge and see what kind of trouble we could get into.  Process complete.  The Droid Life Incredible has been rooted.

We’re working to get you video and written instructions by tomorrow.  You are going to love this.

  • Kolin L Brown

everytime i run unrevoked it always comes up and says that reflash.exe has stopped working….any suggestions?

  • J Folk53

I walked in to a wallMart 2 weeks ago and shazam, they had them in stock. went to a verizon corp store and they told me it would ge several weeks before they had any. Go figure!!

  • http://twitter.com/hesky9 Hesky Ji

still waiting for the instructions for rooting

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Russell/587025649 Steve Russell

OK, so I keep hearing and reading that unrEVOked came up with a one click root for Incredible but when you go their site, Incredible is not listed? What gives?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Russell/587025649 Steve Russell

    oops. double post. sorry.

  • str8havoc

If you don't root you might as well buy a I*hone.

  • Thenaughtyprofessor

    So where's the instructions?

    • Chris Nimon

took me awhile to figure it out but I downloaded unrevoked3 from the link above to my desktop. unzipped it to the desk top. opened that file and opened the internet explorer file which had directions for installing the bootloader. then I opened the reflash file and followed the on screen instructions. In all this took me about 15 minutes and I was rooted.

  • Dmrnhs

I just rooted my incredible but now I hear that an ota with 720p is coming. Do I need to unroot prior to installing the ota or do you know if the ota is root safe.

    • thunder

No you don't need to unroot. Rooting the phone only does not inhibit your ability to receive and install an OTA. Only if you have a custom ROM that “turns off” the OTA will you not get the update.

  • spinfysh

It looks like I've rooted my Inc as I see the Super User icon in my apps. How do I install/activate mobile hotspot? Thx in advance for the help.

    • thunder

you will need a custom rom that has that feature available. rooting the phone by itself does not add or take away any applications or functions of the phone. Rooting only allows for you to have full access to system files and the ability to apply custom ROMs and install applications that require root access such as Titanium Backup, etc.

  • jakebowenecu

Will this same thing work on Eris my wife has an eris running stock 2.1 that has been running slow lately. I would like to root it and put a custom ROM on it for her but can't find a good tutorial for it any suggestions?

  • Paulash

Can I unroot once I have root access?

    • Paulash

I just want to know because my understanding is that rooted phones don't get the OTAs, correct?

      • thunder

No……only custom ROMs that turn off OTA's will prevent you from getting updates. Rooting in of itself will not prevent OTAs

  • trombone dixie

    @ Kellex

when will the video and written instructions be posted?

  • http://www.technologycharge.com Sachin

When it's rooted, will I be able to completely remove HTC Sense?

  • Bansheestar01

How do I get The unwanted app. off my Droid X

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1699579526 Blake Jacobs

i'm new to this. i'm not opposed to 'rooting' my phone, but can somebody explain why i would want to do that?
what benefits does that give me over just using the version as sold for regular user retail consumption?

  • Jonathan

Okay.. when i try and click in the unrevoked link, it pops up, but doesnt let me click on anything! ..?

  • Scotty89

yes, bash me for this as I'm still stupid to a bunch of this rooting and ROM stuff. If I root now, I can't get the official OTA update, right?

also, I read here while ago that the custom ROMS are exactly like the official update, right?

one more thing, is it easy to go back to stock? you know, just in case something happens and I have to take it back.

lube it up and go easy on me…I'm still newish to all this.

    • Tyler

Why would you want the official OTA update if you're rooted?

      • Scotty89

i'm not rooted, yet. thats why I'm asking the questions. I've rooted my wife's Eris and it made it a ton better. I wanna do the same to my Incredible but not 100% sure if I want a custom ROM or Official…..seems like if something screws up my phone with an Official one, I can raise hell at someone. Custom ROM screws up my phone, I'm screwed.

this is a problem I'm trying to get some reassurance on.

        • digitalicecream

Scotty89 I just rooted mine and to be honest, aside from knowing that I can; right now I really have no need to do so. My understanding is that to UNROOT, you have to do a factory wipe. I don't have confirmation on this yet. Once you do a factory wipe, you will get the OTA update to 720P video and other goodies, then you can use unrevoked to re-root the phone as needed thereafter. Per some digging in XDA Forums.

      • digitalicecream

Are there stable ROM's out for the dInc?

    • Jonathan

I also need help.. i never really thought aboutt rooting my DI, but i kinda want to now, i just have no clue what so ever on how to do it.. or what files to download..??

  • rebelz13

    Where are the instructions???

    • Stephen

Dude, I'm sure you're excited about this, but youre gonna have to wait until tomorrow…Kellex is a busy man and said he'd try to get the write up for it by tomorrow. If you want to just go for it though, click the revoked link.

      • Mrpicolas

lol we all are just remember we all have families and have to see them sometimes and since we dont have evos video calls dont count lol

    • digitalicecream

      (wait for the OTA first)

Here's what finally did it for me:

Set phone to CHARGE ONLY mode
Removed HTC Sync, HTC Driver installer, Doubletwist from pc
Download “recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-inc.img” and open it from within OCR WITHOUT phone connected to pc
Connect the phone and cross my fingers, and watch the program do its magic..

sit tight! when the program says its done, its done! close the program and run a Nandroid backup from within the recovery mode. Once complete reboot the phone and you're all set.

  • rebelz13

Where do I find the instructions to root?

  • rebelz13

So I see that its been rooted, but where is the link to the instructions????

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Martin/1253853948 David Martin

kellex, did u install the CM6 nightly build?

  • Jeff99

is there a 2.2 froyo build for it yet?

  • palomosan

Finally I can root my Dinc, but first I'll wait for the official Kellex video.

  • Ace Z.

Congrats to all Incredible owners, it's time to taste freedom! Off topic, but I went to the Verizon store here in NY and played with the new DROID x. Let me tell you, the screen and the display is incredibly sick! As I flipped through the home screens, it was a bit laggy, but that's a software issue and once they fix that, wow what a superphone! Too bad I can't get one so I'll wait.

  • Ewhitak

This makes me want to ditch the droid for the inc. well maybe not yet.

  • Komodos

could someone plz answer a question for me? does a movie that I put on my sd card have to be a certain file type?

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

      Mp4's work good :-)

      • Komodos

        thank you!

      • droidaholic

Tim you got to help me out real quick. pretty simple question. i would just like to know before i do it.
taking my phone back because of touchscreen problems. was rooted with froyo and just installed the update.zip for stock 2.0.1. went fine and im on 2.0.1 but my baseband is still the brand new one. 43. something.when i update to 2.1 will it install the new baseband or keep the one i have. just wanted to know because i can easily root with 2.0.1 but harder with 2.1
        thanks so much

    • Dito_Muertez

well, no. Specifically it doesn't have to be 1 certain type. There are a few different types of files the droid can play. Which means, on the other hand, it does have to not be certain types. Your video's record as 3gp. So that would make it the best choice. Unfortunately it's a bit of a rare type.

You could also download apps that will let you play mp4, mp3, wma, aac, and a few other formats.

      • Komodos

awesome, thank you all for the help

    • ipod_ur_mom

download the rockplayer beta. Its a divx player and so far its played all the divx files i've thrown at it.

  • digitalicecream

It opens your phone up to future possibilities. like Froyo by august, senseless ROMs and an entire community of tweaks. I don't feel the need to OC my phone as my challenge is still battery life/drain and the processor is plenty fast… a side note: I see the top speed on my processor utilization at around 800Mhz not 1Ghz… maybe thats just me. But I did want to have the option to do all of the above so I rooted this phone.

  • Eric

What took you so long Kellex? LOL

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/I37YLWJRR4XCAJJIXULRSXABZQ Eduardo

I got a question is there a way of overclocking without rooting?

    • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

      no

      • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

Thanks for answering that….I don't know if I could have composed myself as well as you did on that one lol

        • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

          I try my best

          • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/I37YLWJRR4XCAJJIXULRSXABZQ Eduardo

            Thought so

  • Lakernutz

So how many of the X's are going to be returned and replaced with the incredible now that this release is available and the news of the efuse self destructing your phone. I'm considering it and I don't even get my X unil tomorrow. But I think I may have trouble pulling the trigger once I see that huge screen. Kinda like once you own the 60 inch LCD you dont ever want to have to go back to a 50 inch.

    • digitalicecream

LOL. I will trade you my incredible for a new X. I've even rooted it.

    • Budiwzer

Not here. I've been using the unrevoked tool on my Incredible since June 23rd. Not sure why this is making big news as being “new”.

  • Yagermeister

Since I have a Droid, I have not had my eye open for Droid Incredible ROMs. Are there any since you are rooted now?

    • digitalicecream

      not yet. WIP.

  • Jeff

Not to change the subject but if I go ahead and get off the fence and root my D1 and then the OTA comes out, if I go back to stock will the OTA still be availabe or do I miss out on it all together by rooting?

    • jiggaman508

As long as you return to stock it will be available

      • Jeff

        thanks for the quick reply!

        • jiggaman508

anytime, that's what's great about this community and this site…. Congrats on root kellex, about time lol…

      • DroidTre

so for example, say i return to stock just for the froyo update (whenever that day comes). Will i still be able to root it back with froyo on it?

        • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

If they find a root for it then yes. I say root your phone now, just incase they cant root 2.2.

          • DroidTre

thanks! i may end up doing that and just switch back to standard whenever froyo comes out.

          • Tyler

terrible idea, what happens if you can't root 2.2 and they deny you 3.0?

          • Scotty89

this is exactly the stuff I'm looking for when asking my questions. Now I'm back on the fence about rooting my Inc.

          • Ldrbuck1

Also, why loose root and go back for 2.2. Any custom rom you flash will be 2.2 and have everything Froyo has.

Unless you are looking to regain your voided warranty!

    • DroidTre

^ I was wondering the same thing because I'm getting real close to saying screw it and root my D1 as well. Anybody…….

  • poeddroiduser

Sorry to go slight OT, but was wondering from the 2.2 rooters,

Is there a significant performance gain as predicted with 2.2?
Did the FM radio rumor come true?
Any other neat features unlocked/added? Blue tooth dialing?

Just wondering what exactly I have to look forward to! Thanks in advance.

    • Flyinion

Well, at least per linpack and quadrant I see significant gains. Overall feel is much snappier as well. Part of that for sure is running on an 800Mhz kernel but even before that it was improved. If you look at a quadrant results list where it compares your speed to a bunch of different reference results, my droid at stock speed came in 4th from the top of the list, with the 800Mhz kernel it's 2nd. Notice the reference point for the stock 2.1 droid is way near the bottom. I'd say big improvement.

    • Tabrad

HUGE difference. My overclocked @ 800mhz froyo droid gets a score of 1038 on quadrant, whereas my friends 2.1 droid incredible gets a 508

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

Can it be overclocked? How are the Quadrant scores?

    • Tabrad

On an earlier article a 2.2 DI got 1357

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

        thanks for the reply

  • digitalicecream

            HEYO!

      • fbords

how does this work with future upgrades (like froyo when it comes out)? Will we need to use a custom rom to upgrade so we dont lose root?

  • Flyinion

nice, I'll have to pass this on to my boss. He's got an Incredible.

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

excellent!! if the process if seamless, then I too shall take the plunge.

    • digitalicecream

      seamless. go for it.

      • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

is overclocking the inc from 1ghz to 1.2-1.3 worth it? besides that, what other “must haves” does rooting provide?

        • digitalicecream

It opens your phone up to future possibilities. like Froyo by august, senseless ROMs and an entire community of tweaks. I don't feel the need to OC my phone as my challenge is still battery life/drain and the processor is plenty fast… a side note: I see the top speed on my processor utilization at around 800Mhz not 1Ghz… maybe thats just me. • aarynk

Nice!!! was going to try on a buddies Incredible tonight but will wait for your awesome video tutorial!!!!

  • Lethalprophet

so…what about the bootloader? now that it's rooted, will custom roms be able to be installed?
