DROID X Receives OTA Update Just Before Launch

An 18MB OTA update has been pushed to Droid X devices running in the wild.  We have no reports as to what this update includes but is likely just a bug fixer.  It does update the phone from version 1.13.516 to version 1.13.604.en.US which really means nothing to any of us.  And no, it’s not Froyo.

Speaking of Android 2.2, chances of it hitting the Droid today are pretty slim.  There are rumors floating around now that it has been pushed back to the first week of August.  Here we go again?

Well Who would be dumb enough to root a Droid first, without knowing what they were doing and second go and tell Verizon about it??

In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say…a locked boot loader probably won’t prevent me from buying the Droid X.

Motorola said they didn’t like it that way because it opened up TEST registers taht could be used for rooting the device..

There is a problem with drawing too much current from the power management chip during low power mode, so it has to be run in like debug mode. Motorola also said they didn't like it that way because it opened up TEST registers taht could be used for rooting the device..

I'm just trying to further support the development of open source android and by putting my money into Motorola they should follow along, like HTC and the rest.

i know exactly whats in the update, or at least one thing thats in it. There is a problem with drawing too much current from the power management chip during low power mode, so it has to be run in like debug mode. Perhaps it's due to the camera issue? Could always compare before/after the update.

I got my Droid on my birthday and if we get the update before or in December it'll be like a Christmas present…sort of.

  • Bonez

I wish this baseband worked better my signal still sucks I actually think that it might be worst

  • cizzlen

Needless to say a locked boot loader probably won't prevent me from buying the Droid X. I'm just trying to further support the development of open source android and by putting my money into Motorola they should follow along, like HTC and the rest.

Just a few posts earlier we got CM6 released :) Those are the post we love to see. 2.2 has been available for weeks now. Tired of waiting for updates? Join us! Team ROOT….(droid-life.com) We will all help you feel at home!

  • cizzlen

I haven't heard many people bricking their phones and trying to get them replaced as far as I know. I'm sure Verizon reps would simply inform the customer that they can't do anything since it's automatically salvaged at that point.

Besides when we chose to root, we acted at our own risk and responsibly. I wouldn't have gone root if there wasn't this great online community behind all of it. So the scenario that Verizon doesn't want headaches from it's significant amount of “dumb” Droid users doesn't actually exist then does it? Who would be dumb enough to root a Droid first, without knowing what they were doing and second go and tell Verizon about it? We know exactly what we are doing and Motorola needs to stop the BS about protecting their customers, it's kind of an Apple move amidst the whole open source project.

Just unlock the bootloader. If it was such a strict policy why was the Droid an exception?

  • 1bad69z28

I am placing my bet of Halloween, any takers lol

  • 1bad69z28

Hey I was wondering how come there is not a Arm band for the Droids like the Iphone. You know when you go to the gym or running. Something elastic that can fit the most of the Droid phones. For all of the active Droid fans out there ha ha.

  • 1STP_KLOSR

what launcher is that in the photo?

    • Brendan

      looks like ADW

  • http://www.facebook.com/RoyR80 Roy Rader

    I have 2.2, thx JRummy… :-p

  • Cz

Haha the beauty of a rooted droid. >:D no waiting around for cool updates when you already have them !

  • 1STP_KLOSR

what launcher is that in the photo?

  • Jeff

Maybe waiting for these updates to Android wouldn't be so painful if you people quit broadcasting what your “reliable sources” say. When it comes it comes….just enjoy the phone as is..there's much to enjoy.

  • Jhatton

Yea, why not. they f**cked over the 2.1 update, kept everyone waiting and waiting for the release. Why would they get the 2.2 out in time as always. Someone needs to get thier s**t straight

  • http://www.facebook.com/michaeljmcgrath Michael McGrath

Anyone have any idea of when Verizon's Galaxy will be out? Gracias.

    • EggoEspada

      Guessing by August the latest..

      • http://www.facebook.com/michaeljmcgrath Michael McGrath

Yeah, I just didn't want to get the X and be stuck with it because they released the Fascinate on the 16th of August. Worst case, if I hate the X, I'll just return it early and then wait an extra week for the Fascinate.

  • AnDroidSepTIX

Who cares about the OTA UPDATE!. Isnt that the point of being rooted? Not having to be attached to MOTOs TIT waiting for the next drop of milk. So we are lactose and tolerant and have to drink the synthetic stuff. Its just as good maybe even better. Plus we get to choose what flavor chocolate, vanilla, strawberry… Thats just the image that pops im my head.

    • http://www.facebook.com/michaeljmcgrath Michael McGrath

Ha, homey, it's “lactose intolerant.” Not being a d-bag, just giving you a heads up so you don't sound foolish to others. Unless you were going for some awkward joke about how you're somehow related to lactose and are a very tolerant person.

  • djenks24

No worries, CM6 running great, and now I'm waiting to get the droid x until I see if it will be rooted or not. Thats a deal breaker for me.

  • Trophynuts

maybe its an update so that you have to hold the phone a certain way to make calls……….

    burn

  • Trug

Anyone else notice the launcher? You guys think they changed it or whoever owns the X just downloaded a different one?

    • 1STP_KLOSR

anybody know what that is? I would whatever that is when i get my X

  • http://twitter.com/storm34x Daniel Archibald

I say Big Red needs to stop toying with us and just deliver the OTA update. NO more broken promises. I have a friend who worked on the droid x(shadow) project and he was one of the lucky employees to get the 2.2 update and I have played around with it already on his droid and all I can say is it's AMAZING! Fast, wifi tether is there too

  • Droidzilla

Maybe it's an update to unlock the bootloader . . .

    Hey, I can dream, right?

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/GLUZVXJIFZ65KX37RJYHNHCIRA John-

And risk bricking all those phones by making such a drastic firmware change?

    • http://www.facebook.com/pandies Patricia Holley Andrews

      wishin…. :(

How many DX do we think Best Buy will actually get in? Will they really be able to satisfy round 1 preorders? (I know round 2 they have said are up in the air).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cesar-De-La-Cruz/31004288 Cesar De La Cruz

      I. Called my local best buy n they said they are expecting 20. I'm number 8 on the preorder list. But for some reason I'm still nervous.

      • thescreensavers

If you get get me a sku, I can get my friend to look it up in the Computer on RSS

        • craig1989

That would be awesome! The SKU is 1035822. The store I ordered from is store 422.

If you could get a general idea of how many Best Buy has I'm sure people would love you!

  • Mrpicolas

droid x update hmmm wonder what they forgot?

  • Michael_NM

Slightly off-topic, but for those of you getting your Droid Xs tomorrow, don't forget to support Droid-Life by getting your Xcessories from the Droid-Life store!

    • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

werd! support the best android forum around…

    • nick o

its not wednesday its tuesday the dx comes out on thursday!

      • Michael_NM

        Oops… Thanks, I've corrected my comment. :)

    • kellex

Hey thanks for the store shout out!

    • http://twitter.com/DerekWeber Derek Weber

      There's something on your nose…

      • Michael_NM

Haha! Yes, I do wear glasses. :)

    • Mrb

Would love to but like with any new phone, not a whole lot of accessories are out there.

    • YankInDaSouth

Speaking of Xcessories – anybody know of a good arm band for Droid 1? I saw the one on this site and it's not really what I was hoping for. Would like to get one that the Droid slides into while still being able to use the touchscreen well. Does such a beast exist?

  • OldNuc

Lets start the 2.2 on Droid-1 pool. How far can it be pushed down the road. I say no OTA 2.2 until Sept 6, 10 or later. Maybe Santa will bring it.

    • Michael_NM

I vote for 9/22. It's the last day of summer… If I recall correctly, late summer was the “promise.”

      • OldNuc

It should be here by Christmas at the latest. But it will not be here “real soon now” for sure.

  • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

I think I may have to move to a samsung phone. JK I love my droid

    • nick o

idk the fascinate is looking NICE!

      • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

Maybe if I get a new phone.

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

just saw a post from droid landing…houston on the horizon. but im 20 miles out from downtown houston, so im hoping it lands somewhere in the suburbs

Kellex, have you heard anything regarding 2.2 update for the Incredible that supposedly will take place on 7/16?

    • kellex

Incredible 2.2 on the 16th? That's news to me.

    • Bort

Based on the “we have a problem” Tweet awhile ago, I think it will be down by NASA

      • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

if it is…i won't bother. that's a forty minute drive.

    • thescreensavers

Well you would need to wait for them to give you a tip of the general area of where it would be in Houston and then you would drive to the area, then when they give cords if your lucky your already close by!

    • EggoEspada

I don't see the 2.2 update coming that early. The Mobile HotSpot and 720p HD Recording is a different story though…

  • http://twitter.com/deadfrog82 Nicholas Olek

Motorola in general pisses me off.
