NemoPlayer Force Close Fix

If you were one of the unlucky risk takers who ran into issues with the NemoPlayer, then here are some steps which should get your gallery fixed without having to completely factory reset your Droid.

Instructions for non-rooted users…

1.  Uninstall NemoPlayer.
2.  Mount your Droid to your computer.
3.  Copy every single file on your SD card over to a folder on your computer.
4.  Delete the “Android” folder.
5.  Unmount your Droid and go into Settings>SD Card>Unmount SD Card>Format SD Card.
6.  When that finishes, mount your Droid to your PC again.
7.  Copy back over all of your SD card files to your Droid.
8.  Unmount your Droid.
9.  Done.  Fixed.

Instructions for rooted users…

1.  Restore a backup or flash a new ROM.
2.  Done.

Thanks to @jamerson90 for the fix!

  • Camaros_Kill

man I just formatted my card for a different reason 2 days ago! Sux when you have 10 gigs full of stuff on it. W.e tho…thanks for the fix!

  • tisha

This player has jacked up my gallery too. I am not good with computer s or smart phones. When you say move everything to my computer, is there a way to move everything at one time, or do I have to move each file individually?

  • fgonzo98

Is it possible that this app converted all my videos into quicktime files? Suddenly the same videos I've taken with my Droid, cannot be played on my Droid…

    • fgonzo98

seems the video player does not work now…after all this, I'll have to do a factory reset!!! ???? Damn!

  • machinegun68

I tried this and now my Gallery is broken. I can use Astro and see all my pics but Gallery does not see them. Any ideas?

  • JHallSr.

Problem solved. I did a factory reset. Actually, first I deleted thumbnails and the Android folder from my SD, then I did a factory reset. Luckily Google backed up all my contacts without me having to do anything. All I had to do was reinstall my Apps from the market, which was no big deal and now my gallery is fixed. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

  • fgonzo98

ok…all in process now…(un-rooted droid) so, what is the purpose of the 'Android' folder? Should I make a new Android folder?

    • fgonzo98

ok…hmmm…when opening the camera appp, I get 'Preparing SD card…' and when I open the gallery I get 'loading'….any ideas on what the deal is? my pics are definetly on the SD card

      • fgonzo98

        patience…all good now

    • Jamerson90

as soon as your sd card is formatted, it will make its own. That is Android's cache folder. its on your sd card so it doesnt take internal memory

  • JHallSr.

Would a factory reset fix this problem and if so would I lose 2.1? If so how would I get the update again?

    • Jamerson90

Just use your computer. the problem is a hidden corrupt file on the sd card

  • blackcatroad

after I wiped and installed a new ROM (what the heck, right? that's why I rooted!) and reloaded the apps from Ti (yes I uninstalled Nemo first before making the backup)

everything was fine until the phone went to the lock screen. once unlocked, everything was back in placce including the damaged gallery. doing the long fix now.

any suggestions on what went wrong?

    • Jamerson90

wiping seems to reset the apps, but if you dont format your sd card in the way above, it will still try and call that corrupt file from your sd card that destroys the gallery

  • JHallSr.

I've tried everything listed here except for using a computer on a non-rooted Droid and still the same problem. If anyone figures out how to fix this without formatting my SD our using a computer (i don't have access to one) please email me at justinhall85@gmail.com

Thanks for the help, sorry to keep posting here but i don't want to lose the pics of my kids as well as all the other stuff on my SD card.

    • Jamerson90

you have to use your computer and back up your data, then delete the android folder, format, and replace the data. it will work then

  • Ricky

Ok now that the Nemo thing is all over and done with I still need a great video player? Do I have to go back to Video Player?

  • Keith

Ok i still have problems after doing this, my gallery just says “loading” forever.

I think I did everything to the letter on this. I did notice that formatting the SD card literally was only 1 or 2 seconds it seemed, but it was definately blank when i was copying stuff back over except the lost.dir directory which was re-created. I also had deleted the android directory as was suggested.

    Any thoughts?

    • Keith

It finally started working after 3 or 4 attempts, seems ok now other than I did get one more random force close after testing for several minutes, but I'll chalk that up to the app since it wasn't constantly repeating.

      • Keith

FYI, not sure if it's normal but it appears my gallery force closes every time upon returning to the home screen.

        • Jamerson90

I dont seem to be getting that fc issue

  • Hep

Yeah, that was a huge pain in the …! Nemo was kind of cool, but the force closes were killing me. Then when I found the gallery was busted…that was nice. Did a backup restore last night to fix and warned others not to install. Oh well, someone will get a multimedia app up and running soon I'm sure.

  • ashok

thanks for the fix. i was getting worried there.

  • Chris Nimon

didnt even realise there was a problem till I read this. Glad DL and @jamerson90 found a quick fix. GOOD JOB!

  • JHallSr.

I've found this forum to be really helpful. This is the first time I've had a problem. I won't root my droid because I can't afford a new one if i brick it. So here's my question, is there any way to fix this gallery problem without a computer? I don't have one nor do I have access to one. I don't want to format my SD as there are pics of my kids on it that I could never replace. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give.

    • shane0790

This is the only way to fix it that I found, but there might be another one somewhere. I really have no idea if we can find the file remotely with your phone, as it is a hidden corrupted file

    • OldNuc

Yes, read throught the comments here. You delete the .thumbnails files. And, follow the link in the original post of the player to Droid forums and read that thread for the details of what to do. You can fix it with Astro in the phone without loosing anything.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/4EPXEO5USRVZDTHFOF6R5CDDVQ Jonathan

Thanks for the fix. Droid-Life is awesome, and obviously software and roms are always at your own risk. Don't sweat it.

    Keep the good stuff coming.

  • DeeMat

ty kellex. That is the same process i used last night and everything is back to normal. Hey, it gave me a chance to clean some of the junk in my sd card!

  • john

    THANKS!!! worked perfectly

  • Mike

sorry about the RANT post Kellex….I was just frustrated…NOT YOUR fault AT ALL!
Thanks for all the hard work, effort, and for providing us with GREAT Droid insights and info!!
I will try and temper my frustration in the future!

Keep up all the GREAT assistance!

  • A Woodson

    Another fix:

Open up Astro (or any other File Explorer app)

Make sure to select View Hidden FIles option.

    - delete the contents of DCIM.thumbnails
    - delete the contents of Androiddatacom.cooliris.mediacache
Also check your camera folders for any “.thumbdata” files, and delete those as well.
    - Reboot phone

    • JHallSr.

I tried this and it didn't work for me.

    • shane0790

That was the first thing I tried before this. Wouldn't work at all

  • Gail

I LOVE THIS APP!!! How does it mess up the gallery? My gallery is working just fine.

    • nkhex19

This is a really cool media player but I won't download again until the Gallery bug is resolved. For me the Gallery issue didn't happen right away. Give it a little time and it will probably happen. What it does is causes your Gallery to force close everytime you open it and even when you uninstall NemoPlayer it still causes Gallery force closes. So beware. Hopefully you won't get that issue.

  • Gail

So how does NemoPlayer mess up the gallery? I downloaded it, and my gallery works just fine. this is the BEST multiplayer EVER!!!!

    • shane0790

I think you mean multimedia :) and it places a file on your sd card the gallery wont accept, and it goes into a fc loop

  • teejaytm

Ok so if Im rooted, I just try a different ROM and do I have to wipe data/cache when I do a new ROM?

  • Paul

Can I highlite all the folders on phone card then transfer them or do i need to transfer all seperate?

    • shane0790

      yes to the first

  • rjoudrey

This player appears to be memory hog, not worth the hassle.

  • Paul

Did anyone just remove it from the phone? if so did it work?

    • shane0790

If you removed it before your gallery broke, it looks like its ok, but if your gallery breaks, you have to do this to get it working again

  • Chaz

    Good morning Droid life!

    • kellex

      Good morning!

  • iammebane

see everyone…. our boy has come through again….its so disappointing to see people jump all over kellex, fro something he had no control over…. do you actually think that he downloaded this, got a f/c loop to his gallery, and say f&^%k it, i will post it anyway??? come on !!! i had the issue with my phone, i had a backup, problem resolved for me. even if i did not have one, i knew that he would have a fix for us soon.. thanks again kell!!!!ex, i really appreciate what you do

  • Paul

Why can't I just remove the folder from my card on the phone? Are we not doing the same thing?

    • shane0790

What we're doing is not only deleting that folder, but deleting any hidden files on the root of your sd card. I tried just deleting it first, didnt work

      • Paul

Thanks for your help shane7690 works just like you said, thanks again……PAUL

        • shane0790

Hope all is well after this fix. I havent had a problem with my gallery since I did this last night.

  • Mrpicolas

Yay me that was not fun LOL… oh well thanx for the fix

    • shane0790

Tried that when I was figuring out how to fix it, wouldn't work

  • JHallSr.

I don't have a computer so my question is, would just deleting the Android folder from my phone and restarting it fix the problem? I am non-rooted. Also I noticed the FC's didn't start until I turned my phone off.

    • kellex

I tried it and no go. For whatever reason, this NemoPlayer is hiding some corrupt file that can only be erased by formatting the card. You could try backing up all of your favorite stuff through DropBox if you don't have a computer.

      • Collin

What about looking for hidden/system files in /sdcard/?

  • J Glenn

A much easier method: Get RealPlayer instead. Much better UI and far better video player. Video automaticaly fills the screen, something that even the stock Droid player can't even do.

    • shane0790

I've been sworn against realplayer since before it came to the android platform. I hated it on my computers. lol

  • http://twitter.com/dj_blackcat G

This is probably a dumb question
But is there a chance someone will figure out a way to mod the app to make it work on the droid?

    • shane0790

The guy who released it didnt even know it had that bug, so hopefully he will try to fix it

      • http://twitter.com/dj_blackcat G

Hopefully he does, this sounds like an awesome app.

  • http://twitter.com/wmsco1 wmsco1

    Looking GOOD Lewis !!(Kellex)

  • Samuel

should i delete the “Android” folder in my copied backup on my computer or the “android” folder on my droid?

    • kellex

I would delete the one on your computer. The one on your device will be wiped when you format the card.

      • Collin

So… in effect, you're just deleting the “Android” folder off the SD card? Why not do that straight from the computer or from Astro? Has someone tested this without actually having to format the card? (If I could get the APK, I'd be willing to test this myself. I'm not afraid of a little FC; I've got plenty of backups.)

        • blackcatroad

Tried simply removing the Android Folder via Astro just for the heck of it. No go. Same issue.

        • shane0790

second the notion of that not working. I tried that before I tried this method. This was the only way I could get it back

  • evltwn

If you are rooted, and have a back up of your current ROM, just restore it. That should do it for you. Sorry to all you non-rooted Droids…come over to the dark side.

  • Michael_NM

Dr. Droid's prescription worked great! Thanks also to jamerson90! A little bump in the Droid-Life journey, but no worries. To those who complained earlier, ketchup might help the crow go down easier.

If this is the worst thing that ever happens to my Droid, it still beats my last phone (Omnia) on it's best day.

As I said earlier, keep up the good work Dr. Droid!!!

  • nkhex19

Thanks for posting the fix Kellex & jamerson90, I was disappointed to see how people reacted the way they did after all you do for the Droid community (Which most of us really appreciate).

Just a FYI people, whether its DL or any other site, if you install any kind of app ESPECIALLY if its an apk or “Ported” there is a high chance it may have bugs/glitches. EVERYTHING you download is at your own risk. Kellex has gone out of his way countless times to hook us up with all kinds of custom goodness for both rooted and non-rooted users. I know the Gallery issue was inconvenient to fix, (well mainly for non rooters) but that's the risk we take when we download anything. If Kellex and Xeudoxus knew about this issue you know they wouldn't have posted it to download. If you are ever unsure about installing anything then you should wait and let others test it then and see if there is any bugs/issues. Many of you should know by now ANY modification/download you do to your phone you run these kinds of risks. Thanks again for DL!

    • Michael_NM

Amen!, +1, Well said, etc. DL and Dr. Droid rock!

    • blackcatroad

+1,000 – Kellex, nkhex19 said it perfectly. If it weren't for your wonderful directions/videos I'd still be stock, but I've been enjoying the rooted life because of Droid-life.

      Thanks for everything you do!

    • kellex

Thanks for the kind words. Just hoping that we got everyone fixed!

      • blackcatroad

fixed? I just look at it as a chance to try another ROM ;-)

    • http://www.best-registrycleaner.net Best Registry Cleaner

I love how the rooted users only do one thing.

  • Ed

I love how the rooted users only do one thing.. and non-rooted have a bunch of stuff to do. ;P I love being a rooted user. :D

    • Jamerson90

too bad I didnt have a recent rom backup :P

  • trav

i followed the directions correctly but now my gallery just sits there and says loading…its been doing this for 10 minutes. What did i do wrong? help!

    • emanuelC

it might take a while, depending on how many photos/videos you have

  • alex9483

Followed the above instructions for non-rooted. Seems to have worked, but oddly after checking my gallery two sequential photos do not show a preview, only a blank screen. When I hit them to enlarge they are there, just not in minature for the preview. Strange.
    Thanks Kellex and Jamerson90.
Just one question to be sure it's done right: steps # 3 and 4 are in the right order and not supposed to be reversed, correct? I mean I copied the android file before deleting per instructions. This means the exact contents of the file were copied back to the SD card after formatting, so nothing was actually deleted. Is that correct?

    • nkhex19

The issue you were having with the photos not showing a preview is a bug I believe with the Eclair Gallery. I have a couple of videos that do that. I am rooted so I'm not sure about doing step 4 before step 3,

      • Jamerson90

I dont seem to have that problem at all. I thought i might have it after the fix, but it all came back up

    • shane0790

No problem. and as to your question regarding the steps, they could have very well been reversed, but when I was experimenting and trying to fix it, that was just the order I accomplished it in. I wanted to make sure I had all the data backed up. To tell you the truth, I made a second folder identical to the first that way I would have all original data, and one modified data. When you copied it back, what you copied back was everything you had minus the data cache for different android applications that are stored on the SD card to save internal space

  • Ludacrosse05

I installed NemoPlayer on my nonrooted Motorola Droid, saw this post, uninstalled it and opened my gallery… I don't see anything wrong with the gallery though? What exactly is happening? I never actually opened NemoPlayer, maybe that makes a difference?

    • nkhex19

If you never opened up NemoPlayer I think you will be fine. What was happening is after it was installed if you went into your Gallery it would instantly just start force closing everytime you went into Gallery and even uninstalling NemoPlayer it would still cause your Gallery to Force Close.

    • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

Maybe your lucky, I would wait a little. I thought the same thing, but then I kept opening and closing the gallery and got the fc loop. Hopefully though you are lucky.

  • poeddroiduser

My apologies, I didn't realize the problem was this serious. I had no luck getting it to find media files I downloaded today so removed it anyway. Guess I need to complete the process in the AM.

    • shane0790

Its no issue man. That's why we explain :) welcome to Droid-life :)

      • NZT

Thank you for the directions on the fix!

        • Jamerson90

          You're welcome :D

  • tareq

So should I download the app or not?

    • nkhex19

No, this is a fix after you've downloaded it and then have the Gallery issue. I would wait until its updated and then download it.

  • http://twitter.com/ASeparateFirst Jeffrey Murray

Argh. And I didn't even like the app. Not about to reflash (Haven't backed up in almost a week – I will immediately after this), so I'm fixing it the hard way. About time I cleaned up my sdcard anyway.

Thanks for all the help Kellex, I won't let this one snag stop me from taking your advice.

  • Marcelle

My first post… yeah it screwed up my galley but ” Droid life ” has been so informative and helpful since launch, how can I really complain. One bad app won't spoil my day. Thanks again D.L…. I'll simply restore a backup and I'll be ” back up! ” cheers :-D

  • poeddroiduser

I have another way, this thing didn't work anyway.

    1 Settings
    2 Applications
    3 Manage Application
4 Nemo Player (it is near the top of the list, not alphabetical)
    5 Uninstall App
    6 OK!

  • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

Rough day man, I feel your pain. Way to be on top of it though and post this fix. Not the best for nonrooters, but gets the job done. Good thing I was installing the nex them bugless beast anyways.

    • shane0790

doesnt work like that. even after the uninstall, there is a hidden file on your sd card that breaks the gallery. that file is in your Android Cache folder

      • carig

I uninstalled and my gallery still seems to be working. Is it just a matter of time before it breaks? If I clear out my cache folder will that help?

        • shane0790

Well, I tried that but it wasnt that simple. I cleared all the data and cache on just the gallery app, and that didnt work either. Following those steps was the only way I could get it

    • kellex

      Smile.

    • shane0790

I'm rooted, but I wasnt about to wipe data and cache again. too late at night to do that :)

      • http://allaboutdroid.wordpress.com sremex

You don't have to, I just restored an old backup, used titanium backup to get all my data for my apps back, then updated, it did take 30 min though so I would just wait until morning.

        • shane0790

my last backup is last week, so I almost would have. and its not even on the CM 5.0.7.1, its on The Shiz (which I quickly went back to CM). Once i figured out that the problem was on the root of the sd card, i quickly figured out that I wouldnt have to do any flashes of roms or backups

          • blackcatroad

@shane – I'm kinda in the same boat. how did you fix yours? did you follow the directions above or what?

          • shane0790

Well, I actually made the directions. Lol. everything i did is right up there. steps 3 and 4 are basically interchangeable, but that was just the way i accomplished it

          • blackcatroad

D'oH! My bad. Thanks for the quick response. (and the directions)

          • shane0790

lol. you caught me just as I woke up :) and you're welcome

          • shane0790

The problem emerged when a hidden file emerged on the sd card that was related to both the Nemo player and the gallery (the nemo player had a gallery). This method is simply removing that hidden file that they won't let us see or touch. Its kind of like the way I take virus' off computers that won't let me delete them. Simply put them on a flashdrive, and format it.

        • Jamerson90

Well, I figured out that this involved something on the sd card because the
gallery worked when I had it unmounted. Just went from there and toyed with
the sd card files, transferring back and forth. Then I tried the format and
          it worked perfectly
