Droid 2.1 Update Coming Today

I know, I know, here we go again.  After all the Android 2.1 delays can you believe we are attacking this again?  Reports are popping up from all over the Android world pegging today as the day that the Motorola Droid will finally start to receive the 2.1 update it has been waiting for.  As you’ll see down below, another 1,000 test updates were sent this morning which will be followed by the larger rollout starting tonight at midnight.  So does this mean we’re finally becoming official 2.1 members?

Here is what we’ve got so far…

The Droid upgrade page now lists a new build (ESE81) rather than the ESE53 build which we had been led to believe was coming…

The update PDF has also changed to this new build…

This email was also posted at Howard Forums…

And our guy confirmed that there are only 3 screens still.  Sorry folks.

Our source at Verizon just sent over this screenie.  It’s official people. And while I can also see that it says ESE53 on it, trust me when I say that this is real.  If you think it’s shopped or fake, then please leave this site as you should know me better than that by now…

More updates coming…

      • http://www.facebook.com/mayurp24 Mayur Patel

I cant tell any difference in performance! but im still tryin to find little tweaks and what not!

        • garbagedick

can you post a video of it in action to the site later on today?

oh ya nice april fools joke kellex…..

  • NikolaiVolkov

I have spent too much time setting up cyanogen mod (and being unbelievably happy with it) to unroot just for this. I do however look forward to cyanogens latest based off this new build. Dont know how much it means to jump all the way from 53 to 81 but hopefully this is just the beginning of even better rooted roms

  • flavorman55

for those of us who have rom manager what would be the point to go back to stock? wont we just be able to download the new ese81 build cyanogen or ultimate roms aweek from now anyway ;-O

    • http://twitter.com/Durrock2000 Derek Weber

Good point. Who needs Verizon and their slow ota nonsense.

    • garbagedick

like most people here, we want to believe you. it's been a hard month or so. any chance you can take some video. almost all cameras have a video mode

    • Eric_Sorensen

I noticed the time the picture was taken is 5pm, on 3/30. Is the time wrong on your camera or phone? What part of the world are you located?

      • http://www.facebook.com/mayurp24 Mayur Patel

I took it on my samsung glyde! Im in VA!

  • shcommish

How do you save the file again? I have been searching on this web site to find the directions again and can't find them. Could you repost it please?

    • garbagedick

after the update downloads, dont restart, click the home button and the update.zip is on the root of your SD Card

      • shcommish

And then what do you do to share it?

        • garbagedick

email the update.zip to kellex from your phone, or hook up the phone to your computer and copy it onto there, then email it to kellex

        • garbagedick

were you able to get it copied?

going back to stock bc of the ESE81 build specifically made for droid.

the new ROM's based off this build will be pretty sweet.

  • Napes

If we use Rom Manager to return to the Stock 2.0.1 ROM, does this also restore the recovery to SPRecovery?

    • tpags

No. You will have to download DM updater again after back at stock to get SP recovery.

      • Napes

This is where I'm confused – don't you need to root your phone to use DM Updater? It seems like a catch-22.

    • http://twitter.com/JStandiford21 Jason Standiford

you can either flash sprecovery with dm updater or with rom manager.

      • tpags

If you just want to go back to stock and wait for update, do the stock option in rom manager. You dont need SP rec to do that. Later if you want SP rec. just go through the steps with DM updater. And yes you need to be rooted to use DM updater.

      • tpags

No matter what as soon as you go back to stock you will have the stock recovery. Neither sp or clockwork. After you go to stock you will have to root again to get sp..

        • Napes

So just to confirm (because I'm slow) if I use Rom Manager to go back to stock, I would be unrooted and have the stock recovery. I would not need to make any additional changes and would be ok to receive the 2.1 update when it comes through. Right?

          • tpags

yes. when you do that just to make sure go into settings>about phone and see what you are running. If it says 2.0.1 you are good

          • tpags

Go up in the videos tab and like the fourth video down Kellex has a video on how to do it.

  • rocketdaddy

Here's hoping somebody posts a file to download soon.

    • 2147cs

      Exactly………..

      • 2147cs

        Tic-toc-tic-toc…..

  • gsxr750

Yea I got ahead of my self lol

  • df7003

well even if i wanted to revert back to stock i couldnt because for some reason everytime i try to flash clockworkMod recovery with rom manager it says an error occurred while atempting to run privilged commands so sucks for me im stuck with CyanogenMod 5.05 because the download rom tab is dark. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know intill then no choice but to run CyanogenMod 5.05

  • http://twitter.com/dj_blackcat G

I personally don't see any reason why to go back to stock, except maybe if the phone needs to be sent in for some reason, since the guys (and/or ladies) that come up with the custom ROMs do a terrific job at them and release updates and improvement much more quickly and efficiently compared to the corporations do.
Maybe they aren't as stable as the actual releases, but the developers actually listen when people send in feed back. Again just my thoughts on it, and I dont think flash could even change my mind.

  • Low023

This and Modern Warfare 2 map pack with Double XP starts today, what a good day.

    • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza

I'm actually more excited about the 2 map pack…but douple xp also? omg, i might go home early!!!!

add me on xbox… MEAT JAVELIN

      • rdunseith

Looks like they where having problems with the mappack when I tried earlier to dowload. Fixed now? If you want to add me.. lilrobio

Anyone know how many home screens come with this update? The Milestone just got 9 home screens with theirs.

      • rdunseith

I believe you have the option of choosing 3,5,7, or 9 screens. I could be wrong though.

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony Garza
  • machinegun68

    Whatever..zzzzz :)

  • 2147cs

How about uploading the file from your sd card?

  • gsxr750

Dont see the live wall paper either

    • bksone74

its on the PDF describing what's to come with the update…

    • Pete

some fool has already uploaded a screenshot on androidforums, he failed to snag the update.zip though.

    • tpags

Its funny that the support forums manager in their forums says”That report that was posted was “leaked” or “fabricated” information so it could someone else making a joke at your expense. Certainly I hope people wouldn't be that cruel.” Wow you would think they would know. But maybe after all the false promises they are just remaining silent. If this is an early April fools joke someone needs to be kicked in the jimmy. Here is the site with the quote:https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/24677?start=1245&tstart=0

      • Michael

No wonder Matt (Moto forums manager) took the week off.

  • Jeff

Nobody else finds it odd that the big update is set to come on April 1st?

Until proven otherwise, I'm going to assume that this is an early April Fools joke.

    • Kevin

An April fools joke is something you play on your friends, not something a company plays on its customers. They wouldn't risk the bad PR. This is the case especially since there are so many Droid owners (enthusiasts really, so maybe not that many lol) out there that have been waiting (patiently or not) for 2.1. I don't know anything really on companies and playing April fools jokes, but I don't think Verizon would do this since they are pretty business oriented.

  • dwhang

i hope this is truee. if not aww wells im enjoying my cyanogen v. 5.0.5 with the htc ime keyboard so im having fun with my customized phone. i wonder if its worth it to unroot just for the update? think so?

  • Paul

I'm just going to wait and see for now… I like my rooted Droid, my 6 screens, overclocking… shouldn't take them long to root 2.1.

That said, some MOVEMENT on this finally is good news!

  • stranja

germany got 2.1 update today grrrrrrrrr

  • http://www.facebook.com/mayurp24 Mayur Patel

Just Got My Update! No Joke!

    • rdunseith

I can say I got it to but I would provide some proof so I don't look like an asshat.

      • Goosedroid

        Hahahaha…..asshat

      • rals

I concur with asshat comment lol.

        • tpags

He just said that a couple of posts ago. Dont tell us 10 times you got it. Show me the money. ASSHAT!!!
          lol Classic

    • http://www.facebook.com/mayurp24 Mayur Patel

I swear! How do i take a screen shot of my phone! I woke up took my dog out and looked at my phone and while i logged onto droid life and i got the update notification just like on the site!

      • bksone74

take a picture of it with a camera and email it to kellex. then we will judge.

      • rdunseith

Grab digital camera, put in video mode, take blurry video, post to youtube, provide link here, then say you have a milestone.

        • http://www.facebook.com/mayurp24 Mayur Patel

          OKAY ON IT!

          • rdunseith

I guess sarcasm is not your forte'. If you DO have a milestone and not a droid. Don't bother!

        • Ace Z.

          LMAO!

      • duckphan

Nobody believes you. Innocent until proven guilty.

        • Chris

I actually believe you seeing as you have your facebook link and quite possibly your real name posted.

          • rdunseith

So did that other guy that burned us.

      • WTH2.1

Sorry for the hostility but we've all been burned before. Get those pics in and let the masses make an altar of you or a voodoo doll. Depends on what's on the pics.

    • kellex

He's not lying. He sent me the pics.

      • rdunseith

        Awesome!

  • djenks24

You all owe me a big thank you. I finally got sick of waiting for the update and rooted on Sunday. (Thanks Kellex for the instruction) Now I get to learn how to go back to stock. :)
Hopefully the new build will give us something to get excited about. As long as it runs smooth I probably won't root again until I see something awesome show up or my phone gets laggy. Although with Cyanogen and Ultimate Droid, we will probably start seeing new roms in a couple of days.

  • Ace Z.

I swear god if I'm not one of the 10,000 user to receive the update I'm going to flip out.

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

Get ready to flip out then….Chances of being in that percentile are actually quite small considering how many Droids are being operated in the US.
      But, you never know :-P

  • rneal_ra

I'm not going back to stock until I hear if there is any reason to. Running cyanogenmod and I am really pleased with it. I would hate to go back to stock, get the update and be disappointed. What are your plans?

  • jerbush91

Well I just rooted my Droid the past weekend and must say it was the best decision I have made. I am loving the Smoked Glass even more everyday. Having said that I am happy to see the update OTA coming out but I will just wait for the time being and enjoy the freedom or my rooted phone. I am sure that just as fast as the Milestone has been rooted since the update the same will be happening to the Droid.

  • Michael

2.yawn… My anticipation has waned. Since we have access to all of the 2.1 features thanks to Kellex and his crew, I'm not sure that this update will be anything but a disappointment. I'll keep my fingers crossed for bluetooth dialing, but otherwise this is going to be just like finally getting read a Feb. newspaper.

<sarcasm> I am really looking forward to the pre-loaded Google Goggles though. It's such a pain to only have access to it through Android Market. </sarcasm>

As others have pointed out, this should be cool for the rooters/modders.

    • Octotron

An interesting point to look at is that all the roms are made based on a build not optimized for this device. I would update and then look to see what the devs can come up with for roms BASED on Droid's 2.1.

      • Michael

Good point. That's what I was alluding to. You've done a much better job elucidating it. :)

  • Avery42

hmm i dunno seems like i get more from my rom then this update. is there any reason to go back to stock and load this update?

  • Rodney Back

The Milestone 2.1 upgrade received the ability to unlock up to 9 home screens. I wonder if we will that same capability? Hmmmmm?

  • Ace Z.

Dammit, I gotta go back to stock *sigh*

  • Austin

anyone notice that 2.1 includes way more eye candy than is listed on that pdf?

    at least from milestone's 2.1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5SIM0AoRk0

it has a very nice updated bookmark system in the browser, completely revamped camera app, and a new music player?

    • Octotron

Something I noticed was that the Live Wallpaper was not interactive and seemed a bit clunky. I hope that it is more fluid on this build.

I am also wondering if we will be getting more then 3 screens here, I liked the option to choose how many you wanted right out of the box.

  • Mayur Patel

Its 12:32 PM and i just received my 2.1 Update! This is No Joke!

  • StarMerc698

I would like to say I'm excited, but until my Droid says I'm running 2.1, I'm not getting my hopes up.

  • Mayur Patel

its 12:32 and i just received my update! No Joke!

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

      Let's see it man….

    • Octotron

It is pretty uncouth to come here and lie. Provide some proof please.

  • darkcomartist

NIIICE!!!! I was told by a vzw yesterday that probably within a week the update would be available for download (not OTA) and I was hopeful but a bit skeptical at the same time. May be he meant that the OTA would be this week and next week it would be avaialble for download. Either way hopefully this means it's coming one way or the other. I don't care if they get the milk man to deliver the update as long as I get it!!!!!

  • lugzey

Should we wait and see or go back to stock to get the update? Actually enjoying the latest Ultimate Droid. Is it going to be faster or do we have to root to overclock again?

    • Falcon34

Good point! I didn't even think about the ability to overclock. Would we essentially lose the ability to use all our apps made for rooted phones? Or are most of the these apps out there just 2.1 compatible?

      • jerbush91

Most the rooted phone apps are built on the 2.1 SDK that was released months ago if I am not mistaken. I know Smoked Glass v6 is 2.1.

  • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

    I got a boner :-)
Q1 has pretty much come and gone. Let's see what they got!

  • xFenixKnightx

    Bout offing time! :-)

  • http://tllg.net/ Andrew

Lets hope nothing goes wrong so we can all get it! :D

    • Austin

I was one of the first 10,000 for 2.0.1 lets see if i'm lucky again

  • rals

I dont understand why people think flash and 2.1 are synonymous with this update. Adobe will get this out in June. I think we have deal with one problem at a time before we worry about flash coming to our devices.

  • Falcon34

I don't see any mention of Flash in the pdf. I would think this noteworthy if the update came with it.

    • rals

      • Falcon34

One simple reason I am looking for flash – those with rooted phones do not really have much else to look forward to. Flash is one of the only reasons I would unroot. Also, I would look to root as soon as I could even if I did update to 2.1. JMO

        • rdunseith

The milestone has already been rooted, so I don't see it taking a long time to root the droid.

          • Falcon34

I agree, but I think I'm going to wait to unroot until the 2.1 update has definately been rooted for the droid. I like my freedom with my device.

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

No Flash from what we know of from previous press releases. :(
      Maybe for 2.2 lol

      • tpags

Flash is either going to be available in the market or right from adobe.

        • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

Thanks tpags. Would be awesome if it came in the market :-)

          • http://www.johnpariah.wordpress.com/ Mr. John Pariah

it will be most likely straight from Adobe

          • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

            Of course……

          • tpags

About a month ago they said some phones were going to have the option to grab it from the market when it comes out. No matter what it won't come from Verizon. THANK GOD!!!

  • http://twitter.com/matthileo Matt Katzenberger

The email on howard forums still lists ESE53.

  • kulz

crawling along…not as excited about it as before but thank GOD they're moving along….in the right direction….hope its not april fools tho :x

  • Jason A. Grier

YESSS! Hey Kellex, can you post a link/tutorial on how to downgrade to 2.0.1 from the newest CyanogenMod with ROM Manager? I have the newest of both.

    Thanks!

    • bksone74

i agree… this would be very helpful.

    • tpags

There is a stock option in the rom manager.

      • Jason Grier

I saw the stock option… just hit that and go? Wasn't sure if there was any other things I had to do besides that

        • tpags

          Hit it and go.

          • Jason Grier

just did that and got firmware version 2.1-update1 sooo IDk if that actually did it…. guess obviosly not! haha

          • bksone74

question for you… after selecting Flash ClockworkMod Recovery i get a message saying “An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!” what do i do now? this keeps popping up.

          • tpags

check to make sure you have the latest rom manager and try again.

          • bksone74

i downloaded the latest version before trying it… still getting the same error…

  • NSBJJ

What is the difference between the ESE53 build and the ESE81 (besides the number)?

    • Octotron

A certain level of brick-your-phone is probably missing from ESE81.

      • teddyrucks

Damnit. They always leave out all the best features.

  • http://twitter.com/matthileo Matt Katzenberger

    Hurray for action!

  • Octotron

We have some movement here –

    http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/moto_d

    version on .pdf has changed
