The Nexus Player, Google’s first commercially available Android TV-powered set-top box, is live on Google Play for pre-order. As of right now, it states that shipments are not expected to leave the warehouse for another 3-4 weeks, but that could chance at any time.
Buyers may also want to grab the compatible Gamepad controller, priced at an additional $39.99.
Go grab it.

shes back in stock!
What OS does the Nexus Player run? Standard 5.0 or some custom build?
poor ouya
sold out 🙁
Today we can see many good games with better visuals in Andriod, like Modern Combat 5. Now what Google needs to do is making large game developers feel interested about porting games into Android. And thats how Google is planning to enter into console market. I dont know what will happen in the future but this is a smart move from Google.
Won’t let me even pre-order the controller. Seems like it is shipping first week of November. Just like the nexus
No HDMI pass-through? Lame.
Got mine. Sorry revue. You’re going upstairs to another TV or back in your box. You served us well.
I’ll wait for it to hit Amazon, tax and shipping on Play makes it worth the wait.
I need Ethernet. WiFi is why my Chromecast experience sucks.
Also want Amazon Prime videos.
In the meantime I’ll check out a Tronsmart that does more than the Player for less money and has Ethernet.
can someone tell me why I need this if I already have a chromecast?
And by need I mean as much as someone who obsessively buys tech products would need one.
Looks like the perfect device for people with non-smart-TVs.
The remote looks a lot like the Fire TV remote!!!
Game pad sold out? Lame.
Does anyone think that another OEM will make a better unit that will be out soon? The 8 GB of storage is kind of low, especially after the OS install. There is no word on if this takes expandable storage by USB. 1 GB of RAM is kind of disappointing too. Guessing these specs were to hit the price point of $100
This is an excellent point. Without a way to add additional storage 8 GB does seem rather small if you are into XL sized games.
Razer announced they would have a Android TV device “in the fall” however they have not released any specs or pricing. http://www.droid-life.com/2014/06/25/razer-announces-android-tv-powered-micro-console-focused-on-gaming/
Check out Tronsmart devices. They have more RAM and expandable storage, and fast processors.
The unit looks nice, but runs android 4.4. Want something with Android TV and can cast.
AllCast Receiver will accept your casts.
chinese.. tronsfail.
They’re helping drive down prices. That’s good for us.
Would have been nice to get free shipping. Any word on other sites selling this?
According to the Nexus Player site, they are only available for pre-sale on the Google Play store. I’m wondering if availability will open up after release.
“Could change at any time”?
They’ve updated much more in the store too. Moto 360 charger is listed as coming soon
Not sure if I should grab this or the upgraded Chromecast that passed through the FCC recently. I do a lot of YouTube and media casting, but don’t watch much broadcast tv, and don’t have or want cable TV. Opinions, anyone?
I almost just bought a 2nd Chromecast. Knowing the new Nexus announcement was coming, I held off thinking maybe we’d see a version 2 of the Chromecast. Glad I waited. I don’t need much more then a Chromecast but will pick this up with a controller to test it out. I wish they gave it an ethernet port.
I will not pre-order it though. I learned my lesson with the 2012 Nexus 7.
Wow, no ethernet port. That is kind of a deal breaker for me.
Does anyone know if an external drive can be attached to this? Can you download apps directly to this player, say the VLC player? What I’d like is to download an .mkv file and put it on an external drive or usb drive and have VLC player play it instead like a local streamer. Can this be done? I say again, can this be done? Answers! I need them!
It does have a USB port so you will likely be able to attach a drive to it. Or you could download PLEX onto it and keep your HD plugged into your computer and have the server running off that. This will more than likely have VLC or MX player or something like that which would play direct MKVs if you want as well.
Ethernet would have been nice
who uses an Ethernet anymore except for in PC where wifi is not available???
I hardwire whenever possible. My XBOX, Blu-Ray, and PC are all within 10 feet of my home router, why wouldn’t I wire them? It’s usually faster and very reliable.
People who hate latency
Normal people
Actually, the average person probably relies almost exclusively on wifi.
Actually, you’re wrong.
Actually he’s right. Remember, we’re not average. That sorority girl who gets Starbucks every day is average.
Every device in my house except my phone and my TV run off of gigabit ethernet.
I’ll drill a hole and run a cable for a stationary device before I use WiFi.
People who have their TV setup next to their modem. Why waste the small bit of latency when I have a small cord that reaches it directly, eliminates the 1-5% of bandwidth drop you are likely to experience via wifi?
If you plan to stream video from Plex, it would be better to have ethernet, especially if you use MKV format
If you plan to stream video from Plex, it would be better to have ethernet, especially if you use MKV format
I got a netgear nighthawk and can stream 1080p mkvs over wifi now. To multiple ROKUs too, if you have a good router, WIFI works great.
Derp.. powerline.
Honestly, with ac wireless, I don’t see much of a benefit to having ethernet. The only real, justified, complaints I have seen about the Chromecast being WiFi only have to do with plugins and apps on the local network producing poorly optimized (or completely unoptimized) video and not having enough throughput on the wireless network to push the video. Never mind that this should be solved by those apps, running this on an ac wireless network should address those issues. All other complaints that I have heard are really about a slow internet connection, which people just attribute to the lack of ethernet anyway.
ac wifi is useless in most households due the the requirement for G from appliances like printers and like. Fail comment.
What is a printer?
(This is meant in part to be a dumb comment, to counteract the moot point you made, but also a reference to the fact that I cannot remember the last time I have owned a printer.)
im planning pretty much to use this as a plex box, so ill have to wait to make sure that it’ll do HD audio (amazon fire doesnt)
Ordered!!!
guess it’s nice to have the variety of choices.
This needed HDMI in for passthrough.
Right now I cut the cord so I am not super concerned about passthrough, but passthrough was so clutch on the googleTV. I don’t know why they didnt continue. My guess is another manufacturer will make one with passthrough and ethernet, and I will wait until then. Otherwise the OS and everything else about it is great.
I also hope they still have a primetime app or something like that.
Definitely going to need some reviews before I decide on this.
But then again, it is only $99… So tempting, but I really was hoping for ethernet.
If it had ethernet I would have rolled the dice, now I’ll wait. I’m basically going to swap this our for a Roku 3 to add Google Play media even though I’m losing Amazon Prime video.
If the Amazon app is available to the Player, then it shouldn’t be a problem since they added Prime Video to it recently.
The Amazon player requires you side-load it. So I guess we’ll have to see if they allow 3rd part apps on it as well.
Do you guys keep your router near the TV? Honest question. I personally try to keep as much wiring away from view as possible. Glad this is wireless so I could be behind the TV (Maybe with an IR Blaster if supported.)
I do. In my apartment AT&T Uverse can only use one jack for television/internet so my router is right behind my television.
Yup, have a big enclosed entertainment center under my wall mounted TV, with my router inside it, and my game consoles, NAS, and TV all wired to my router. Anything that’s not portable is wired in my house. I have my cables all tucked inside the entertainment center and ran behind my wall to my TV, so there’s no visible cables.
Well now you don’t have a choice, it’s sold out. 😛
i’d be all over this if i didn’t have a chromecast.
i am so torn on this. i love my ChromeCast and unless i wanted to do some gaming, will this provide any advantage?
I’m in the same boat.
i dont see the purpose
It’s a set top box. What don’t you get about it?
that’s because
1. you have a chromecast
2. you like casting from your Android device
The reason is simple. this is for people who would like an interface to interact with.
Also play Games(PS4/xbox replacement), use Android Apps on TV
PS4 / Xbox One replacement? Not quite but I get what your saying.
I understand what you’re saying, but I just see this as a very small target market, and as a technology that will easily be integrated into TV/Phones/Chromecast in the near future.
The problem with apps on your SmartTV I think, is the reliance on the TV manufacturer to provide updates to these apps, right?
Maybe it’s not a big deal with your new LG, Sony or Samsung TV, but a Vizio, Westinghouse, or some other off-brand… Is there a PlayStore integration where the updates come directly from the developer? Is your TV supported with this app? That is probably the future but for now, at 99 bucks, I’ll give this a shot. I’ve spent more than that on drinks after work.
See Roku & Apple TV.
Might not be a smartphone sized market, but there are millions of units to be sold.
then you’re not understanding what he is saying.
Maybe you mean Xbox 360/PS3 replacement for people not interested in upgrading.
then why comment at all.
