DROIDX Gingerbread Update “Soak” Test Starts Tonight

by: | posted 05.27.11 | News

We were told earlier in the week by Verizon that the DROIDX Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update would start rolling out today, but it appears now as if only members of the “soak test” through Motorola’s support forums will see it initially.  We had assumed that the soak would have started days ago to test and prepare for the mass update which would start today, so this is a little surprising.  And of course, there is that chance soak test members are just being grouped together with non-soak test members, and the rollout will happen as planned to a bunch of you throughout the weekend.

A Closer Look at the DROIDX2 and its qHD Display, PenTile at its Not-so-Finest

by: | posted 05.26.11 | News

When the Motorola Atrix 4G first came out with its “qHD” display, we were all expecting it to be the second coming of some religious figure, but after being analyzed by sites like AnandTech, the term “PenTile” was brought into the light and quickly became the downer it word of the moment.  So naturally, when the DROIDX2 (our hands-on) was released to Verizon and sporting that same “qHD” display, we started digging into it to see what we could find.

DROIDX Gingerbread Update Available for Manual Download June 1

by: | posted 05.25.11 | Breaking, News

Word spread this morning that the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the DROIDX would become available to some starting May 27 (this Friday), but according to a VZW employee at their community forums, the availability of the manual “pull” update for those not prompted, won’t go live until the following week on June 1.  Feel free to start checking your phone on Friday through next Wednesday though, (Settings>About>System Updates) as you may be one of the lucky few who gets it early.

DROIDX Gingerbread Update is Ready, Verizon Releases Changelog (Updated: Friday)

by: | posted 05.24.11 | Breaking, News

The Gingerbread (Android 2.3) for the DROIDX is finally ready.  After 3 or 4 leaks, word from our sources that the .596 build had been finalized, and a “soak test” announced by Moto, Verizon appears to be ready to make it official.  The support page for the DX has been updated with new GB information, including the entire change log which we’ve captured for you above.  You are getting everything we saw in the leaks like the new blue Blur, ActiveSync fixes, and that snowy looking new fixed dock.  The update will weigh in at 112MB.

I should point out that we’re still waiting for a date and for the soak test to finish, but when these documents go up on Big Red’s site, it’s usually a good sign that we’re within a week.  So try to hold off from “pulling” at your phone’s system update page for now until we know more.  We’ll hopefully have more in the morning.  Sweet dreams.

Update: Verizon has notified the blog world that the update will be available on Friday (May 27).

Motorola Employee Confirms Gingerbread Update Headed to DROIDX, DROID Pro, DROID2 and Global, – Finally Fixes ActiveSync Issues

by: | posted 05.23.11 | Breaking, News

Motorola’s Support forums are alive today with talk of the impending DROIDX Gingerbread (Android 2.3) “soak” that we first reported on over the weekend.  Many users are worried that ActiveSync will still be broken, but Moto employees are assuring us all that it has been fixed this time around.  I’d have attempted to confirm this on all of the leaks, but I’m a Gmail man and will have to rely on all of your input for that in the comments.

What might be even more important though, is the confirmation that the rest of the DROID series that was introduced last year will also all be receiving 2.3 in the near future.  The DX is first (which is not surprising) and will be updated by the “end of the second quarter”, although we’re thinking it’ll be much sooner than that with user testing going on this week.  Afterwards, the DROID Pro and both DROID2′s will receive it some time “before the end of the third quarter.”  And to add to that thought, we’ve been told that almost all of the GB builds for these devices have been completed, but as always is up to VZW to approve them.

Update:  It looks like that Moto employee is probably receiving a firm spankin’ as his comments have been edited by the forums’ manager.  Luckily our friends at Phandroid grabbed a screenshot before it was changed.

Motorola Prepares “Project” for DROIDX, We’re Thinking Gingerbread

by: | posted 05.22.11 | Breaking, News

Our inbox just blew up with the email below, which we’re going to assume means that Gingerbread (Android 2.3) for the DROIDX is finally on the way.  We’ve known for weeks that the build has been finalized, so for Motorola to begin testing it with a select group of forums members is not surprising.

Dear Motorola Owners’ Forums member,

We are preparing a project for Droid X owners and would like to invite you to take part. We are now opening the project for registration.

Please click this link to take a short enrollment survey if you are interested. Please note that this is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites.

At this time, there are few details to share, but if you register we’ll provide more information. If you have any questions, please e-mail me here.

Thanks again, and we hope to be in contact with you soon.

I should also point out that one of the links that testers are being directed to definitely says, “Droid X May 2011 update soak” which we’re hoping means that GB will be here before the end of the month.  A few signs have already hinted at 5/26 as being a possibility.

Everyone ready for some official 2.3 action?

Cheers R, M, J, J, and M!

Want a DROIDX2 Early? Non-corporate Verizon Stores are Selling Them In-store Tomorrow

by: | posted 05.18.11 | Deals, News

Verizon made the DROIDX2 official this morning by announcing that the device would be available online starting May 19 (tomorrow) and in stores next Thursday (May 26) for $199.  However, if you wanted to walk out of a store with one in hand early, then you should head in to a non-corporate Verizon store including GoWireless and Best Buy as they will have them in-stock and ready for purchase tomorrow.  We’re not exactly sure why these other retail outlets were cleared to sell them early, but that appears to be the case.

Cheers G and @2Glock3!
