Video Overview: Samsung Galaxy S4 Hardware, Software Tour and Gallery

S4 overview

We finally have our hands on the new Galaxy S4 from Samsung. In this video, Kellex gives us his customary first impressions and software tour of the device. With the S4 running that same TouchWiz UI, but with Android 4.2.2 underneath and a ton of new proprietary software, this phone looks to be a major improvement over last year’s Galaxy S3.

For the full device gallery and software video overview, check below.

Update:  Added hardware tour as well.

I got to be honest…I’m not really impressed with this phone, I’m not hating but it just looks like an amp’d up version of the SG3. Nothing about it blew me away or wow’d me :-( My contract isn’t up until October so hopefully there will be something out worth upgrading to. Until then.I’ll be happy with my razr.

  • itsacardigan

Oh no….Another home button to be emblazoned.

  • Mark Mann

samsung better be careful, they’re going to get sued by apple again, releasing the same handset with a few minor software tweaks and calling it the next generation

  • Gforce

Lag??? Must be the Verizon version. They’ll fix that with an update..in 6 months.

  • uncle paul

The thing you guys are all missing here!,

    ACCESSORIES!.

We all know the next Nexus will have Dick-shizznit for accessories.

I just want a car dock as good as my old droid x ffs.

This will be a mainstream device and will have lots of accessories.

If we have unlockable bootloader then we can do whatever we want with touchwiz.

The features that I like are

Temperature and Humidity sensors – IR blaster – YES!

    The Game controller setup? YES!

Still waiting on Xperia Z – (no accessories)
Moto X phone (Vaporware at this point.)
HTC one, (too iphoney and wierd.)

what else is there? I would LOVE to see a Note 3 but the note just came out…
funny how everyone bitches about toughwiz, unless they own a Note3 and love it.

  • Michael G

Sorry. Still happy with my almost year and a half old GNex.
I’ll wait for Google to come out with their Moto X, or whatever it will be, device.

  • feztheforeigner

    Too shiny…

  • http://www.kizi2.com/ kizi 2

i am using Samsung Galaxy S3. I found very good use many of the features and applications are good and convenient for users.Especially install more applications from vendors google. But when galaxy S4 I will buy it to experience the new enhancements and upgrades from S4.

  • http://geniousatplay.blogspot.com/ Bikram Agarwal

I said it before, I’ll say it again. Last 2 nexus devices have ruined other devices for me. I’m never going for a device which has a physical home button and a company/carrier logo on the front. I want my device to look like a slab of glass, nothing on it.

    • Tim242

I’m in total agreement. But, no Nexus for Verizon : (

      • http://geniousatplay.blogspot.com/ Bikram Agarwal

Yea, that too. Not only verizon. I’m not buying a contract anymore. Unlocked and free is the way to go.

        • Tim242

I got a T-Mobile $30 prepaid SIM, and an at&t post paid SIM, no contract to test. T-Mobile is fine for here, but traveling outside of the city, not so much. At&t is fine for here, and better for traveling, but very slow HSPA+ in outlying areas. OK, but not worth postpaid price for 3GB. I have an unlimited Verizon plan that is out of contract. I was ready to cancel and switch, but their LTE is everywhere. I just can’t give it up. I am thinking about keeping the Verizon plan for reliability, and using the $30 plan to keep a Nexus. I have WiFi at home. I have a Note II that I bought full price. I don’t want to carry two phones, but I can switch up. Does this sound like a good compromise to you? Keep my Verizon unlimited out of contract, and spend $30 per month more to have a Nexus?

    This is the hardware tour.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

Didn’t they say they are trying to make driving safer? The hand waving features make sense if you’re browsing while doing other things. Not that anyone should be browsing and driving, just a practical use.

  • angermeans

I love the hell out of you Kellen, but that is far from buttery smooth my friend.

  • jcorf

The hardware is cool, I guess. Physical home button is lame & Touchwiz is still repulsive.

  • Diablo81588

Filled with gimmicky, half ass, bugged features that few will use more than once just to say “ooo ahhhh…”.

  • Chris King

But to tell the truth I am glad it’s starting to take more than a year to blow my current phone out of the water

  • Diablo81588

Still has the home button lag!

  • http://twitter.com/mrjayviper Jayel Villamin

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qh1hToZsm3c

“if it look’s the same, how will people know I upgraded?”

  • Brock

S4 is old, Samsung already started working on galaxy s5!

    • Austin Warren

      Looking forward to the S7

  • Chris King

Phone is fine, but for me I feel samsung should have brought more to the table with all
    The hype

  • chris125

Remember how everyone said the s3 was a disappointment and how ugly it was…. Well remember how well it sold….. Just saying….

    • flosserelli

Exactly. The S4’s appearance won’t stop those that couldn’t upgrade last year (on contract) from buying it. Once it hits stores, the S4 will literally fly off the shelves.

  • Dave Bowen

Why the Hell are they filling this phone with a bunch of crap bloat like navigation. S VOICE sucked on the GS3. We already have the best maps and nav on the market. My first thought was “this phone will be great once rooted”

    • Bionicman

thats the beauty of android, you can disable all of it or root it and have none of it.

  • http://twitter.com/iAjay33 AjayPitamber

this will sell well no doubt, i hope all those features get along with the battery, but i think they put a smaller battery in the s3/s4/s5 so that the note will have the monster battery.

    • Diablo81588

The note is physically bigger. Of course there’s more room for a larger battery.

  • Sam Sung

Not impressed. So far looks like a minor upgrade from the gs3.

    • Austin Warren

I’d hate to sound like the fan boy again, but minor? Read all the features and let me know again.

      • ERIC REED

You must be gong crazy right now trying to keep up with every freaking post on the site right now!!

      • Sam Sung

Sorry buddy. You are sounding like a Samsung fan boy. Saw the specs. As a gs3 owner I’m not impressed nor envious. These kind of upgrades are no different than an the Iphone 4s going to an Iphone 5.

        • Austin Warren

lol, i’m not even going to fight with you. I’ll let everyone else chew you up.

          • Sam Sung

lol bring it droid life! Just an fyi before I get chewed out, I’m an android guy. My gs3 doesn’t lag so the processor upgrade means nothing for me. I enjoy my camera (coming from a Droid Maxx) so more pixels don’t really bug me. And something tells me those gimmicky features are going to be a battery drainer. I deactivated the gs3’s gimmicky motion stuff.

          • Austin Warren

It has a larger battery for a reason.

          • Sam Sung

Larger battery or not I would still be deactivating those motion gimmick features.

          • Austin Warren

Stop calling them gimmicks, just say that you aren’t capable of using them.

          • Sam Sung

Damn lol. Don’t insult Austin Warren’s Samsung products by calling their certain features gimmicks. You mad bro?

          • Austin Warren

Not mad, but you just need to know the definition of a gimmick.

          • Sam Sung

Wow we both have extra time on our hands.

an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increase appeal.
            Source: dictionary.com

          • Austin Warren

            .

          • Sam Sung

That’s only your opinion though. I mean some people might say Siri is useful to them while others say they never use the thing. It’s all preference and opinion. You can’t get mad at that.

          • Sam Sung

LOL Austin Warren. What happened to your comments about me not knowing what a gimmick means or how these new gs4 features will be useful to EVERYBODY? Did you erase your comments?

          • Tim242

Austin, you are growing on me. However, smart pause and hand waving are gimmicky. The wave to take a screenshot rarely works on the Note II.

          • James Lapierre

            They’re f@cking gimmicks..nothing more nothing less.

          • Austin Warren

You must have a low IQ.

          • Bionicman

these “gimmicky” features are going to become the norm starting this year. its funny because once apple starts incorporating things like nfc, temperature sensors, glove support, etc, then it’ll be cool.

          • Sam Sung

Agreed! Glove support isn’t really a gimmick though. I think that’s a feature all touchscreen phones could benefit from.

    • http://twitter.com/BatsShadow Scott Webber

DNA compared to S3 -> 1080p is a huge upgrade. Maybe Super AMOLED will make that less true, but I doubt it.

  • Androiddroid

Now I must see what Motorola has to offer.

    • angermeans

That would be nothing for what looks like another year. Unless you like the Razr they might release another. In all seriousness at least Moto makes good hardware I’m sick of plastic garbage. Android OEMs have the money and talent (especially Samsung), but they still keep feeding us cheap plastic garbage phones. I do have to hand it to them HTC did a great job on the One and now that the rumor is it is coming to Verizon and in April (and this mediocre Samsung event is over and they have not impressed in the slightest) I might have to pick me up one. Not to mention why isn’t anyone talking about Samsung using yet another pentile display in their flagship phone? Didn’t they learn their lesson? This is what I am talking about with Samsung. You cant sell me gimmicks, make the phone look the same only larger and thicker (it looks thicker I could be wrong), and call it innovation. Not in my book. This was very underwhelming indeed I was hoping all these leaks the last couple days would be Samsung trolling the internets and blowing us away with the GS4. This was joke. The phone and the way the weird way they announced it.

      • angermeans

After re reading my post I have to say the part about Samsung learning their lesson makes no sense. They sold millions. Who am I kidding I guess Im the only one in the world that wont spend top money for cheap plastic phones with awful displays anymore because the competition finally offers something different. HTC wiped Samsung off the stage this year and yet the public is still going to love the GS4 and HTC will still not sell that many One’s. It sucks and I worry about Android to be honest with you. Samsung isn’t eating into Apple’s market they are eating into the other Android OEMs market share. No more Moto (at least right now), HTC went from selling millions to scraping pennies, and LG continues to create phones no one wants.

        • Austin Warren

Not everybody cares about hardware. Most people slap a case on it anyways. Innovation these days is in software, not hardware. HTC lost it all because they didn’t make anything worthwhile, and their non removable batteries, and no micro SD slot killed them. Motorola also isn’t a presence because they are only on verizon and their software used to lag like crazy until they got stock android a few weeks ago. There’s a reason for everything. LG also never release their stuff in the US market, and if it is, it isn’t great.

  • Jaron1226

How about give Samsung a freaking chance! No, it’s not the most beautiful looking device but it’s far from the worst. Who cares if looks similar to the S3? Personally I like the new design, and I’m more concerned about how strong those radios are, the over all performance, and the new innovative features that comes with it now.

  • C-Law

Kellen, can you go over lock screen widgets on ur next video?
I’m curious how they work on touchwiz and I noticed when u turned on the phone, both sides lit up like they do on aosp so I’m wondering if u have to swipe from the edge bc if u swipe from the middle, you’ll just unlock the phone

  • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

Think I will stick with my Nexus 4 and wait for the X phone or the next Nexus.

  • John Ippolito

Here’s the thing, I’m a Motorola guy but I wanted lte so I got the Thunderbolt, now i NEED a new phone and I can’t put up with this thing for another year, so I think this will have to do. I am very impressed with the GS4 tho.

    • Dennis Woodside

I’d advise you to wait for summer. Im the Moto CEO.

  • nagaraj

Don’t need no stinkin’ “life companion” …

  • ERIC REED

This thing is buttery smooth, like all phones today should be.
    Next sentence…
    Hey there’s some lag!!

    Thank you TouchWiz

    • Austin Warren

      I didn’t see any?

      • CIFchamp24

        did you watch the video?

        • Richard Yarrell

For pre production handsets definitely not the final product that will hit shelves soon this was very exceptional software. Clearly the Galaxy S4 makes the Galaxy S3 from a software and implementation of features standpoint pretty useless. This is what makes Samsung a household name nobody is better from a software standpoint. This will be the best handset in 2013 until the Galaxy Note 3 of course.

          • squiddy20

“Clearly the Galaxy S4 makes the Galaxy S3 … pretty useless.” Say it ain’t so! A year old phone being upstaged by its successor a year later?! Who’da Thunk?! Idiot.

          • ceejw

Samsung’s software strategy is great if you like the idea of having buckets of features, with very few of them being well thought out or designed.

          • JakeS41

You realize that Samsung said they are going to bring as many not-hardware-dependent features to the GS3 right? So your “clearly…” statement is clearly wrong. What makes Samsung a household name is marketing.

        • michael arazan

Nice to see touchwiz got rid of that dam annoying buttery smoothness. seriously this is why skinned android sucks

          • ddevito

            +10000000000000000000000

    • C-Law

Eh, not a big deal. I’ve seen this happen on my gnex and nexus 7 in widgets too and they don’t have touch wiz. It normally happens the first time you enter the widgets tab after a new rom or factory reset, I guess bc it’s having to build all the widgets previews. They probably just booted all those phones for the first time that day and Kellen was the first to click the widget tab

      • Matthew

So you’re saying UI lag is inherent to the base OS itself. That’s not any better. Worse, actually.

      • Nagini

Not a big deal?? Are you kidding me?! With the amount of power this phone has, it shouldn’t be lagging at all!

    • Bizzle

its not the finished product… its a test phone mate

      • ERIC REED

Thanks for the information…I was just pointing out a funny part of the video!!

    • n900mixalot

Even desktops have some. Next topic please.

    • http://www.y8friv.asia/ Friv 4

Thank you for making this content simple to browse and comprehend..

  • Verizon

This only makes me that much more excited for the X Phone. Especially with the latest rumors.

  • Tyler Casilio

    Price? Release Date?…………. Musical Event??

    • Austin Warren

      Q2 and $200-$250 most likely.

  • Matt

I don’t care about phones looking the same as the previous but in this case, the previous one was ugly with it’s fake metal look. Now this one looks similar but worse. That textured design looks like rhinestones. Very tacky looking.

    • Austin Warren

      What about the Nexus 4?

      • ChristianJohnson

Front looks the same, but the overall build is much better than the Galaxy Nexus.

        • possomcrast

          Glass back.

          • zurginator

He didn’t say anything about durability (which is fine, mine has taken several 4+ foot drops), but build. The phone feels like a million bucks, and that can’t be argued. It’s two solid slabs of glass with no creak or flex to be had anywhere.

          • possomcrast

True. I was referring to the 3 reviewers I heard cracked their glass back in a week from very short falls.

          • zurginator

I don’t know, I might just be insanely lucky with my phones? My S1 got thrown against a concrete wall, my S2 was dropped probably more than 80 times from about 4 feet, and my N4 has been dropped 6 times from about 4 feet, all onto concrete.

I don’t use cases or screen protectors, because I like a nude device. None of them have broken, but I really need to start protecting my phones from co-workers.

    • troy studnicka

Matt u r a dumbass. This phone is much sexier than the S3 and it’s better all the way around. But who am I to judge!!! It’s personal preference and I think this phone is nicer looking than the S3.

      • http://twitter.com/kepley kepley

he’s the dumbass when you’re the one saying “u r”? go hug a toaster underwater.

        • troy studnicka

U r is for (you are) for short dee dee dee!!!!!!

      • http://twitter.com/hexagram86 David

    • Richard Yarrell

Definitely better than crappy Nexus line devices and Motorola devices. Don’t hate appreciate nothing Google does with it’s Nexus brand or now with pitiful Motorola will ever top the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note family of devices. Stock android is pretty maybe elegant but it’s humdrum, boring and dull offers no enhancements what so ever. Nothing special that’s for sure.

      • squiddy20

“Don’t hate appreciate” …Says the retard “hating on” Google calling their devices “crappy” and “nothing special”. What a stupid hypocrite -_-

      • KyleWay

Stock Android>Any skinned version of Android. Period. Especially TouchWiz!

I’m betting that the first Moto Nexus device will blow everyone away. (They just need to sell off all of their back-stock before they get to new devices).

  • http://twitter.com/belogical2 Be Logical

Loving this coverage, great job guys!

  • Ibrick

    Holy gimmicks Batman!

I can’t imagine how stupid people are going to look hovering their hand over the device or staring at it all crazy eyed trying to get it to recognize your eyeballs.

It does look better though I spose.

    • Bionic

Now imagine the guys who will wave their dickss over it.

      • hashtagtroll

        #imaginationgonewrong

    • Jim

I see people already hover their finger above their screen.

As for the other “Smart” gesture gimmicks, at least you can turn them off. They don’t even seem to work well too.

      • Ibrick

The finger hover thing isnt too bad, but the switching browser tabs by waving your hand over the phone? Seriously? I can do that with a simple tap and swipe, all with one hand.

    • Austin Warren

I wouldn’t call them a gimmick, some people will find them highly useful.

    • hashtagtroll

      #jeditrainingsmartphone

    • snowblind64

Got to agree. The palm wave and eye tracking gimmicks are ridiculous. I can imagine how dumb people will look.

I also thought it was hilarious when Kellex mentioned the buttery smoothness and then moments later the phone mega-lagged at the 55 second mark in the software video.

      • Diablo81588

        That’s hilarious.

    • CIFchamp24

Its the same thing samsung does with their Tvs. Tried the gesture and voice control in the 2012 models and its awful. I get that they’re trying to intro some innovation but does it count when it doesn’t work?

    • BulletTooth_Tony

Let’s nobody try anything new because some nerds on the interwebs are going to pass judgement before they use it, and continue to sell their opinion without ever bothering to use it.

      • Jeff

A new good feature is different from a new bad feature. These “Smart” gestures are mostly new bad features especially since they don’t even work well.

        • BulletTooth_Tony

Who says they don’t work well? A 30 second video with the device tethered to a table, while the individual was holding the recording camera with their other hand and trying to dictate what they were doing to the audience? Yeah… that seals the deal. Clearly they’ll never work when an individual sits down with them to use them on a daily basis.

    • dylan84

Lots of gimmicks I would never use.

    • Nagini

      Holy lag, batman!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=120701197 Daniel Sharpe

    Lockscreen Widgets?

    • MentatYP

      4.2.2, so yeah.

  • R M

    Notification light?

    • adbFreedom

I saw an LED indicator setting when Kellen was scrolling through.. Like a built in light flow which is AWESOME

      • R M

That dancing rose colored light next to the earpiece? I think that’s the Smart stay/Scroll notification. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

        • adbFreedom

I was just referring to the setting option which would indicate there is a light somewhere, but I didn’t see the light

  • Austin Warren

    I like this. Great video

  • http://twitter.com/iAjay33 AjayPitamber

The galaxy note 3 will blow this away, might come with a bigger battery and similar features
    #stock android4ever :)

    • MentatYP

Let me know how stock Android works out for you when you get the Note 3.

Having said that, I’m excited to see what the Note 3 brings. At this rate of battery capacity increase we might soon be looking at a phone that can go a full week of light use between charges.

      • http://twitter.com/iAjay33 AjayPitamber

well the note 2 blew everyone away and i have no doubt the note 3 will do the same..i wish it came with stock but hey thank god the nexus 4 is there

  • Tom

Now that the GS3 is out and old news now. Time for the next phone. What are the upcoming rumored phones?

    • Austin Warren

      Nothing so far. and GS4*

      • Tom

Ya, sorry for the typo. Meant GS4 of course.

    • michael arazan

This is great news for those who have to pay full retail for their phones now, we can get an GS3 at lower cost and clearance sales now hopefully

  • KOBALT

    That didn’t take long

Fingerprinty is the flaw i see

    • KOBALT

If only they’d get rid of the damn glass screens.

    • Austin Warren

You can wear gloves and still be able to use it.

  • sean.yesmunt

tab switching actually looks pretty cool. not sure if I would use the scroll feature though

  • Greg

if it had vanilla android with all the special Samsung features I would be sold.

    • sean.yesmunt

patience my friend roms are coming

      • Greg

I have had my go with roms, I like to keep it factory stock now. Too many battery life issues when I put roms on my gnex

        • http://twitter.com/BatsShadow Scott Webber

You must be picking the wrong rom. I always got far better battery with roms than stock.

Did you see the rumors on Androidandme. c o m. Are those remotely true, regarding the X phone?

      • Bionic

Im not saying some of that couldnt come true but that article had no basis and no evidence to base the rumors on. So ill say this, the article is lame and unfounded.

The features of the x phone are known to a very select few and we wont be exposed to them until may.

      • Bionic

But dont worry. Sarge has said the x phone will blow our minds.

        • nexusplay

Who is this Sarge, and where can I find him.

          • Bionic

Is there a way to PM on here?
