Taking ROM Submissions for Custom ROM Friday!

custom

With the number of devices ever growing, it’s hard for us to keep track of the individual ROM’s and hacks for each phone. At this rate, it’s simply impossible. Back when we all had the OG DROID, life was good. But now, it appears to be time to outsource this task to you, the community. To make sure we are giving you the best the developers have to offer, we are asking that you submit your favorite ROM’s for us to write up on our Custom ROM Fridays

CRF is a way for us to show device owners the best available work out there in terms of rooting and ROM’ing. If you have a favorite developer that is pushing out some amazing work, I’m sure we would love to hear about it.

To submit a ROM for tomorrow, please place a link and brief description down below in the comments section. It would be great if you gave us just a couple of highlights that people could see and we would know what we’re missing out on.

Here’s a brief example:

*Link to forum thread or download* This ROM is for the Motorola X Phone and it’s great because it allows users to change the color of their notification area and to turn cats into dogs.

Tomorrow, we will go over any submissions and write up a few to share with everyone.

Just installed Paranoid Android 3+ yesterday and loving it! This is the smoothest ROM I’ve used yet. And the fact that you can customize each app, is awesome.

Question: What is the best TouchWiz ROM for the VZW GS III? I just miss the camera otherwise I’d stick with a pure JB ROM.

Pure Google AOSP for Verizon Galaxy S III is a great lean ROM where it’s focus is JellyBean and speed. Stupid fast and very simple – no bells or whistles!

  • Tim Swann

I’ve tried out Liquid, AOKP, CM and another, but Project Elite (http://www.droidforums.net/forum/project-elite-nexus/189488-welcome-project-elite-gnex-section.html) has been by far the smoothest with just a handful of the right customizable options. It has a stock feel too. I won’t switch to any other ROM as my daily driver

  • Rockrdr

Team JBSourcery ROCKS..great ROM full customs, smooth, no issues..

Team Sourcery all the way. Switched over from AOKP months ago & haven’t looked back since. Endlessly customizable, & they released an experimental build (4.5.5) literally hours after 4.2.2 went up on AOSP. Absolutely brilliant, & the devs are fantastic folks & always easily accessible via their IRL. Now, all that said…. all of this Carbon hype has peaked my interest to the point that I’m doing a nandroid…. now ;p

I went from CM10.1 to Paranoid Android. It’s not perfect and there are some things I miss from CM, but it’s still my favorite ROM so far. I’m not sure I could go back to on screen keys. Whenever I take it out of Expanded Desktop I always think, “Yuck. How did I live like this?!”. I think they could find a more elegant way to display notifications and a way to automatically reposition the PIE when in landscape mode (navigating in video or games can be a little annoying), but it’s still a heck of a lot of fun. PIE+Stock Browser/Quick Controls+DashClock= An absolutely stunning Android experience that’s easy to use and set up.

Nexus rom with exceptional speed and stability.

  • br_hermon

I’m on Bugless Beast and I love that it’s stock and rock solid stable. Pete has slowed down on development (which I don’t hold against him) and I’m starting to get anxious for 4.2.2.

I see people say Shiny or Mmuzzy. How do both compare to BB. I’d say BB is the king of stock / stable, which of those other two give him a run for his money? Is one better than another? Is either just as good as BB, otherwise I may stick with that. TIA!

    • Steve Benson

Shiny is the new king of stock. I was a looooong-time Bugless user back to the OG Droid days and Shiny is even better.

  • Tyson Atwood

Mmuzzy 4.2.2 French Vanilla has been great for me. Only changes are those that should be stock anyway!

Shiny ROM for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. 4.2.2 JDQ39.

Shiny is widely considered the best “stock” ota like ROM available for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. For those that have been around a while, this is the new Bugless Beast. Shiny is essentially the way Google would have delivered it if Verizon was out of the picture. This ROM is built from AOSP and 99% bone stock. The only added deviation from stock is the hidden reboot menu. Everything else is pure Android 4.2.2, BUT there are a ton of flashable mods for those who like them. This ROM is unbelievably stable and smooth.

The developer, baldwinguy77 is extremely dedicated and knowledgeable. He takes pride in his work and his vision of what his ROM represents.

  • Jon

    Shiny!

  • http://twitter.com/Phaze08 Cody Revels

I personally prefer Xylon. Its available for the Nexus 4 and also a ton of other devices. (Search Xylon on Goo)
Its basically a combination of aokp, cm, paranoid android and some others I think.
I like it because it performs well, has nightlies for alot of devices and also because it has all my favorite cm and aokp cherry picks.
Another thing that I personally think is awesome is that most of the Holo light dialogs have been redirected to the holo dark styles in this rom.
It makes my theme look alot better.
Also the main dev of Xylon is I think 15! He does a great job, if you havent heard you should take a look.

AOKP PUB (Project Unicorn Butter) builds. Originally started by an official AOKP developer, it’s a ROM with all the perks and customization of AOKP but with a ton more speed and fluidness. The original developer has since taken a break, but it’s been picked up by Bigxie (also known as Fabulous on some forums). He was the developer behind the Apex ROM for the Droid X. It’s currently available for the Maguaro, Toro, Mako, and Manta builds.

  • muffnman

My vote goes to the MMuzzy 4.2.2 French Vanilla ROM ( 4.2.2 JDQ39) for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (keeping it true to its namesake)

I use it with WillyJay’s circle battery mod + T9 dialer mod.
It includes tweakable 4.2 style toggles in the notification drawer
    Expanded Desktop
Force Kill All (with nice animation)
    Enhanced Power Menu
    Native Tethering
    Stable
    Fast
    Great battery life
Nice selection of mods available to add in a la carte (so as not to bog down the ROM with unnecessary tweak options providing increased stability)

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762846

  • DaveTea

Atom for the Gnex (also non-themed for the N7). Extremely fast and fluid with a great customization options.

  • maratu

I’ve tried nearly every rom off both Rootz and XDA, and not one have made my Gnex feel better than ATOM:

    http://rootzwiki.com/topic/35925-rom-atom-422-v7-0220/

    • KleenDroid

I agree that Atom is a great ROM. I am running it on my Nexus 7.

I’ve not tried version 7 on my phone yet cause I am kinda hooked on Purity. I did download it though. For fun I might make a backup and give it a try. Last version I was on was 2.

  • http://twitter.com/arhamjamal IceandFire

XenonHD for nexus 4, 7, S and galaxy nexus because it’s cool and performs really well while giving an amazing battery life.

  • KleenDroid

Purity ROM for the Verizon Gnex.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108705

I also use the AK kernels which work great. The Purity Kernel is very nice.

The reason I greatly enjoy this ROM is wonderfully smooth and responsive it is. It is full featured. I prefer ROMs where the screen touch is very responsive. I hate it when a ROM is very good but the touch response isn’t perfect.

People should test out ROMs to see what they like best and not just go with what everyone else seems to be running. Some of the most popular ROMs are my least favorite.

I also like the Atom ROM.

Jelly ‘Beans’ Rom is what I’m running on my Verizon Galaxy Note 2. It’s s a great rom because it provides an AOSP themed experience but you don’t lose the S Pen features. The are also a number of mods and tweaks like sd swap, 50 gb Dropbox hack, and using any app in multi window.

Project Elite for the galaxy nexus! 4.2.2

  • EvanTheGamer
    • KleenDroid

Awesome! Question… You mentioned unexpected reboots. I’ve not been on any ROM that had unexpected reboots and I’ve been on most everything.

What have you been running that has unexpected reboots?

      • EvanTheGamer

I had BB 4.1.2 flashed for quite some time(several months), then like later on, I started seeing unexpected reboots every now and again. Whenever I started doing something, whether it being texting, playing a game, using an app, etc, all of nowhere, REBOOT. But then I noticed in Pete’s description it said that the ROM can cause reboots, so then I knew it wasn’t me that was causing the reboots.

  • http://czonin.deviantart.com/ Corey Zonin

My vote is for Carbon as well!

Shiny OTA-Like for the VZW G-Nex. It’s the new Buggless Beast… and 4.2.2 it s pretty awesome.

    • EvanTheGamer

Wholeheartedly agree about SHINY ROM! It’s the SHINIEST most badass custom stock ROM on the planet right now!

My G-Nex has been sporting Shiny for a week now and couldn’t be any happier about that decision to flash it. It’s incredibly buttery smooth and fantastic!

      • KleenDroid

LOL. How many other ROMs did you try before making this choice?

Its a nice ROM and I used it for a couple days.

        • EvanTheGamer

And your point? Shiny is easily the best stock ROM on the planet, and no one will change my mind about that, not even the likes of you, friend.

          • KleenDroid

? I have no desire to change your mind. Roms are a personal preference sort of thing and if you are are thrilled that is all that matters.

For myself I like to try almost everything and then make the choice of what is best for me.

I am thrilled that you are thrilled!

        • EvanTheGamer

Although, now that I’ve heard about Carbon, hmm….damnit! lol

You try Carbon yet? Any good?

    • http://twitter.com/Rant13 Christopher Anderson

Shiny is currently the best for Stock-Like ROMs on the G-Nex. Best one around if you don’t need extras. Super Stable, which is important as I only have a Daily Driver phone.

    • http://twitter.com/norsedakotan Chris Peterson

More thumbs up for Shiny! So glad I found it after BB development stopped.

    • chanstar

      Shiny for sure!!

    • Bigwavedave25

Agreed. Solid stock-like rom with only minimal customization to make things work. And work well it does. Only downside is for the Vz Galaxy Nexus only, not multiple devices.

      Selling factors other than stability:
-The Dev is the most informative and active of any custom rom that I have ever spent time on. The OP will attest to that.
      - Lots of flashable mods available if you want to tinker a little.

Seriously, people are down voting others opinions on which rom to run or try out, what are we in 3rd grade!?!

      • DaveTea

Yep. Pretty much why I dont bother with this site anymore, at least not with the comments.

    • http://twitter.com/AMiller31 A.Miller

Love it. Love Stock, Vanilla Android and this is a close as it gets. Great for us VZW Galaxy Nexus users wanting updates.

    • MrWicket

yep Shiny OTA! guess I should have scrolled down a bit to have seen this, guess I should have assumed it was already voted for since it’s awesome. :)

    • David Cosme Jr.

Well that sealed the deal for me. I’m downloading it now!

I agree with carbon. It’s the old liquid team that broke off and created this beats. Tons of customization, 4.2.2 based, and crazy fast. Oh, and it supports a ton of devices. Here is the generic link for a description/downloads for all devices on goo.im

        • tyguy829

i was on cm since the first nightlies of cm9, but cm10.1 got choppy on my gnex lately. Carbon kanged a bunch of CM’s features, plus added more while making it a lot smoother too. Highly recommend

        • Fattie McDoogles

I just switched. Its pretty nice. Its CM with a bunch of tweaks that let you really customize it.

      • Troy Myers

I’m on this train too. First aosp rom to play nice with my verizon s3. So happy with it

        • kane

Guess you haven’t used many roms then. I’ve used numerous Cyanomen stables and nightlies. Same with AOKP. I’ve tried Codename Android, CNA had the most bugs but all have worked fine. No rom is perfect nor will they ever be

I was running pa for a while but a lot of options seem to be missing so I switch back over to AOKP linaro builds and it has LMT built in which is the og pie app plus a lot more customized items within the pie. Also if combined with something like nova prime and PGM you can add gesteurs and not have any buttons even for turning your phone on and off

    • rodney11ride

do you run it in tablet mode? just curious on how people are running it? i ran it back a while ago when you could change each individual app… pretty dang cool.
