Ahh found out that CyanogenMod 10.1 (4.2.1) has an option in the Lockscreen Settings menu labeled “Maximize widgets” which does this. There is a slight bit of lag when the device wakes with this on though. Not a huge deal.

How do I get this to show maximized by default? I’ve tried everything I can think of and it still starts in minimized mode on my nexus 4 with the little icons to the right of the clock…

to get to my pattern lock from an expanded widget i need to press my unlock icon or an app on the widget then put in my pattern. If I have it not auto-expand I can just put in my pattern.

Very happy about the improved clipping fix, as I have a 3.7″ screen on my HTC One V and had to use the smallest clock to avoid the notifications being clipped off when it was minimized.

(unless I changed the DPI on the lock screen, but that made the unlock button too small)

Anybody else bothered by the clock being left-aligned instead of centered? I think it’s just the clock and date not being aligned that bugs me; both should be left- or center-aligned IMO.
