After 4.2 Update, is Your Nexus 7 Having Troubles Updating Apps in Google Play? (Update: We Have a Fix)

Last night, I updated my Nexus 7 to Android 4.2. After not turning on my device for some time before the OTA, I was met with lots of app updates in Google Play. Unfortunately, it looks there’s an issue between Google Play and Android 4.2 on the Nexus 7, as one of Kellex’s tablets is also having a similar issue. We’ve tried wiping data and force stopping Google Play, but nothing has worked yet. While we’re on the lookout for a fix, have any of you had this issue as well?

If you have and know of a fix, please let us all know down below.

Update: We love our community. After 30 seconds of this post going up, readers were pouring in with instructions on how to fix it:

Simply remove the Google account, reboot, and then re-enter your Google account. Takes a couple of minutes, but fixes the issue instantly.

Cheers everyone for your help!

Are you sure this is just a problem with Jellybean because My Droid Incredible 2 on Gingerbread was having the same problem this morning.

  • Had this issue while updating Apex but fixed immediately

  • JMonkeYJ

i’m not having that issue, but i’ve noticed that i can’t remotely install apps to my N7 from the play store on a different computer now. the option is there, but the app never gets installed. weird.

  • Are you sure it’s just a 4.2/Nexus 7 issue? I just had to do this on my Xoom running 4.1.2 also.

  • Diablo81588

Good thing it’s a nexus. We all know those are without problems because it’s PURE GOOGLE.

  • Greyhame

Anyone else think they should’ve implemented the two finger swipe down for quick settings and kept the single notification bar for 7″ tablets? Two separate shades is awfully cramped in portrait orientation…

    • Yes

    • nsnsmj

Yep, I agree. 7 inch tablets should have the notifications/quick settings work like they do on phones.

  • ddevito

I’ll wait for Google to fix it, thx

    • Seriously. so logging out and rebooting is too much for you? Wow.

      • ddevito

if this is the only bug reported – I’m also hearing performance slowdowns after the update. Logging out and rebooting won’t fix that – wise ass.

        • droidify

If you are going to wait for an update where people aren’t ranting afterwards about performance issues, you may be on 4.1 for life. Not trying to be a wiseass but people always bitch about bugs after updates whether they are real or imagined.

          • shadowjack

Actually, my N7 is working through earlier update and it’s slower for a while and the kinks work out.

  • LTE4G

Works fine except for MX Player apparently does not support 4.2

  • BigRed4X15

Did you manually update or was this an OTA update?

  • Just upgraded to 4.2 and upgraded four apps (Flixster, Google+, youtube, google play magazines) with no issues.

  • Rob

It’s been working for me. My problem has been that the Amazon App Store doesn’t want to stay signed in.
    (Nexus 7)

  • Manually pushed the update yesterday and have not experienced any issues with updates from the play store.

  • Jonathan Barnhart

This is not just a 4.2 issue. I have had it happen on my N7 running 4.1. The steps provided do work though!

  • EC8CH

I don’t think I have this problem, but I’ve noticed my N7 doesn’t do the CRT screen off animation on 4.2. I can’t remember if it did before updating, but I thought it did. Now it just fades to black.

    • ApplesNAndroids

Nope, N7 has never used the CRT screen off animations.

      • EC8CH

Ok, thanks. I couldn’t remember if it did prior to the update.

    • Greyhame

Same here. And do the icons look smaller I’m the dock?

      • EC8CH

now that you mention it, I think they do. I thought they looked different somehow.

  • matt

Has anyone else had issues recently with their N7 slowing down pre-update? I am still on 4.1.2 and am having trouble with wifi and lockups the last few days…. Not a clue what to do.

    • Greyhame

How much free storage space do you have left? When it gets too low (< ~3 GB), the device slows to a crawl. It's a well documented issue with no fix I'm aware of, unfortunately.

  • Liquidretro

    Everything is working here.

  • Bradley Ruiz

Mine is fine updated youtube, asphalt7 and sonic cd last night

  • Bill Slowey

I had the problem and I am still on 4.1. I was told to remove my account and re-add and it is working now. Did not have to wipe data or factory reset.

  • prestone1

    all good here

  • deserthawk

Sometimes if you do the Google Service Framework trick to force the update this issue will occur. You need to remove your Google account and sign back in in the system settings.

  • Alex Hernandez

If you’re having trouble just remove your google account from sync, totally remove the account then add the account back. It will then do the updates.

  • antwonw

I’ve only been having this issue when trying to update Google Earth.

  • RW-1

Believe it or not, on my Gnex, which I havent yet updated to a 4.2 ROM (MMuzzy FTW! Shameless plug here people… will likely update this weekend….) I got that error when trying a G+ update, I backed out and then it went through. As far as the N7 and N4 perhaps likely because of the SD card data changes, you might have to uninstall and reinstall ? Just a thought.

    • RW-1

Sorry, meant to ad that the error appears on the surface to be on their server end, but ….

  • Bob

Having the same error, but have not updated to 4.2 Still on 4.1.2

    • Bionic

      mine did it for both

  • c_topher_v

    No Problems Here

  • Hawk888

I have had some fail. Meant to try from home last night. Some have updated fine however.

    • Hawk888

Thought it had to do with my network at work, but I just tried again and I had more updates to do today and all went through, including the ones that gave an error yesterday installed fine. I have had some random things pop up. I’m non rooted, installed manually yesterday. Added another profile. Worked fine yesterday except those 2 updates, then looked at it this morning, there was a grey box in low left hand corner and it said Safe Mode. Not sure how it got into Safe Mode, said in both profiles. Rebooted, fine. Had a launcher crash a little while ago.

  • AnotherAndroidKid

my n7 32 is still telling me it is up to date on 4.1.2.

    • Brett Besa

Turn off WiFi, find Google Services Framework under Apps > All, hit Force Stop and Clear Data. Turn WiFi back on and search for the update. Might need to do this two or three times.

      • AnotherAndroidKid

Required a reboot too, but this worked. Thanks so much. Downloading and installing 4.2 now.

  • David_ATL

tried the “remove and re-add Google account” option on mine, and back up and running.

  • derek connolly

No problem here on 8gb nexus 7 either

  • adb.push.Freedom

Try removing your Google account and adding it back in … should work

  • zizzybaloobah

No problems on 32GB Nexus 7.

  • Bionic

yes, you have to clear the cache and data of the google play app and restart your nexus. i had to do it 3 times before it worked. also clear google services data.

  • This is an issue that occurs with flashing a new ROM sometimes just redo your google account and that should clear it up.

There is also a sometimes works way with clear app data for a couple google apps but I forget which ones

  • moelsen8

    you’re holding it wrong

    • 😛

    • Mike

      this. this right here.

  • Droidguy

What Error code is that? Something similar happened to me the other day although not on 4.2. It was fixed by removing your account from google play and signing back in.Hope that helps.

    • Droidguy

Edit, saw 2nd pic for error code just now :p

  • cvhovey

After removing Google account, shutting down, waiting couple mins, then power on … after re-adding Google acct and letting sync, it was good to go.

  • johnnX
  • pubmk

Don’t know about app updates, but my Nexus 7 seems to be slower since the update.

    • Greyhame

I flashed the image files and this thing has never been so smooth.

    • Booyah

      Mine works just fine.

  • Matt

I just got the update to 4.2 on my Nexus 7 and in the Play Store, Google Voice had an update. i tried updating and even uninstalled and tried to re-install, but getting this error:

“Google voice” could not be downloaded due to an error.(Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])

i am not rooted or anything.

    • Matt

removing and re-adding Google account fixed this.

  • Gritchu

I haven’t had any issues on my N7 with this update. Well… I personally have issues with some of the UI Design, but nothings wrong between my tablet and the play store.

  • duoexo

Nope all good. First thing that updated was NOVA launcher and a few other apps.
Now can someone tell me how to disable the lockscreen widgets?

  • No, but my eyes are having trouble with the travesty of the new lock screen widgets and the butt-ugly new clock.

    • Mack

I wish I could turn the lockscreen widgets off but I don’t think the clock is that bad.

    • Greyhame

Unfortunately I feel the exact same way. This is a definite regression. Like combining the volumes for notifications and phone calls, but 10x worse.

      • U do know that u have an option for separating the two volumes right?

        • Greyhame

On stock Android, there is not an option to separate the volumes for notifications and calls.

    • Also the weird bounce-back thing on pulling down the notification bar/settings. Also, swiping on the left to get notifications and the right to get settings comes off as quite non-intuitive. I never realized how much I swiped on the right side of my screen to pull down notifications until I started pulling down my quick settings all the time…

      • michael arazan

I’ve been reading people are having problems with Google voice search being non responsive on a lot of nexus devices on 4.2

    • tjk775

    • nsnsmj

I think the new clock looks great. I’ll give you lock screen widgets though. They seem a little half-baked right now. I’m sure they’ll be great in the next update.

Aside from lock screen widgets though, I think 4.2 is great. Oh, and the quick settings need to be toggles. tap to toggle the stuff on/off, and long press to go into their settings menu. It’s weird because Airplane mode actually does toggle on/off, while wifi doesn’t.

  • each3

Have anybody tried unlinking their google account then setting it up again. That is what I use to do when I couldn’t update my galaxy nexus

  • Mike

remove your google account, wipe data, reboot, re-add google account. should fix it.

    • Trying that now.

      • Mike

do it tim! and next time someone asks for a key lime pie easter egg, you better produce. no excuses! 😛

      • Anon

no need to wipe data or reboot. I had this problem this morning. All I did was delete my google account from my N7 and reconnected it.

        • Mike

See, this has happened to me a couple times. Each time I had to wipe the play store data and reboot or no dice.

    • moelsen8

isn’t that basically the same as factory reset?

      • David Becker

      • Mike

no sorry, i meant wipe data for the play store app. not a full device wipe.

  • Tommy Thompson

    Mines fine.

  • markgbe

i just checked and found two updates, one for google+ and one for play magazines.. both updated fine.

    Stock 4.2, rooted.

  • Anon

delete your google accoun from the device and then reconnect it. Should fix it right up.

  • I had a pile of updates after the 4.2 dropped last night and they went fine. Just had two more go through now. No issues.

    • EC8CH

      GO BISON!

Brock’s making me loose my hair though lately. Hope he snaps out of it before playoffs.

      • Hah, just saw this in my disqus notifications. Yeah, he’s looking better now!

  • DaveTea

Nope. All good on my 32GB N7.
