Download: Camera APK From Android 4.2 For Galaxy Nexus [Photo Sphere Included]

These developers remind me somewhat of Santa Claus. Yesterday, we were treated to an early build of the Swype-like keyboard from Android 4.2, and now, we have the official camera APK as well. After having it installed for only about 5 minutes, I can already say it’s a huge improvement over the last variations and I already know I’m going to completely fall in love with Photo Sphere. But enough talk, let’s get to installing it on your device.

Firstly, this zip is only available for Galaxy Nexus phones that are rooted. All others need not apply. Sorry. If you’re packing a rooted G-Nex with a custom recovery installed, follow the instructions below. Also, some people are reporting bugs with Photo Sphere – mine worked fine, but just know that there are issues for some.

Instructions:

1.  Download the 4.2Camera.zip (mirror) file.
2.  Place the zip file on the root of your phone’s storage.
3.  Reboot into your recovery.
4.  Just in case, make a backup.
5.  Flash the 4.2Camera.zip file. (No need to wipe anything)
6.  Once installed, reboot your phone.
7.  Lastly, enjoy it!

Worked okay at first. Now whenever I take a picture, the camera is frozen on that image and gives a notification that the application is not responding. I close the camera app and try to open but it gives a “Camera Error: Can’t connect to the camera”. Anybody have a solution?

If you are having force closes issues after flashing the apps, the solution came from this comment section, but i managed to solve more than just Camera and Galery Crashes in case you are going to flash all apps.

Does anyone have force closes when clicking on edit/crop?

  • Michael G

I have the force close problem when I try to use the photo sphere option. I’ve tried Root Explorer, ES File Explorer with r/w checked and when that didn’t work I just hooked my Nexus up to my computer and went straight into the root to change the file name and it still won’t let me. Almost like the file itself is read only but it’s not checked. Any suggestions?

This Works Excellent On My GNex. Thanks!

  • cray_z_eyez

if you have FC issues (login, google play services etc) delete the .odex file assosiated with it. I deleted gmsCore, gallarygoogle, and googleEars and it stopped giving me errors and everything works including the photo sphere viewer.

Everything works great!! Is everyone missing the option to share to google maps?

  • Ryan5609

The app and the gallery are working on my VZW Gnex with the latest BB ROM. But does anyone else get a crash when they tap on either of the icons on the bottom left and right when viewing the photosphere picture? I am not sure what the icons do, but I am sure they do something useful.

  • Ryan5609

Kind of a noob question, but how do you flash the apk from ClockworkMod? I put the file in the root directory, but how do I go about flashing it? Sorry I have only ever flashed ROM’s from the SD card. Thanks

  • PyroHoltz

Updated version from the XDA guys, fixes all the issues I was having with edit not working and FC.

does this work on ICS 4.0?

  • DanSan

lol now i have 2 camera apps and 2 gallery’s. easy to tell which camera to freeze but the gallery might be a different story

    • DanSan

nvm. freezed Gallery2.apk and it took away both the camera and camera. golden now.

  • James Richardson

I can confirm this works on the Verizon Galaxy S3. I am running stock rooted. All I had to do was unpack the zip file and find the “app” and “lib” folders. Remount /system as R/W and then push the apk file to /system/app/ and the two lib files to /system/lib/ then reboot. Phone locked up on first reboot but after second reboot it works like a charm.

How is this different from Microsoft’s Photosynth stuff?

Can someone help me get 4.2 camera on my Gnex I tried and its not working for me im running BB 4.1.2 10/31/12 Build date….

  • Michael G

Interesting. I tried it out a couple of times and it didn’t work as well as the video. I’ll read up on the technique and maybe get some better results. Love how innovative Google is becoming. I can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring.

    • kniceguy

I’m having same problem, haven’t figured out any fix yet.

  • Dylan Marck

BTW, Droid Life, I fixed the Sphere Viewer thing. Be sure to actually credit me this time. The apk link is at the original source at AC.
