Samsung Will Reportedly Unveil the New Galaxy S4 in February, You Don’t Say!

Let the games begin! Only three months after Samsung released the Galaxy S3 into our lives, we have the first Galaxy S4 rumor to mock. According to today’s rumor which is straight from company officials who wish to remain nameless, Samsung will unveil the next generation flagship Galaxy in February at Mobile World Congress. The device will have a 5″ display, LTE, and a quad-core processor. It will run Android, look similar to previous Galaxy devices with its rounded-corner rectangular shape, and compete directly with Apple.

Really? Anyone that has casually spent the last year or so in tech could have come up with this rumor and not even had to peg “company officials” on the end. The Galaxy S2 was launched at MWC and contained a slightly bigger screen than its predecessor. The Galaxy S3 was supposed to be announced at MWC, but Samsung wanted to wait to announce it until the phone was actually ready to ship. It also had a slightly bigger screen over its predecessor along with LTE and a quad-core chip. So now the S4 is going to follow the same path, get out of town!

First, all of this is about as obvious as you can get. Sure, it will likely sport an Exynos chip, LTE, and a similar design. Will the screen see a bump in size? Maybe, but maybe not. Samsung has a Note line of phones for the 5″+ market. Will we see it at MWC in February? I sort of doubt it. Samsung seems to have settled into the late Spring-early Summer release time frame. They’ll certainly have a presence at MWC, but that would only be 9 months into the life of the current Galaxy S3 and only a short couple of months after the Note 2 – it just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

So you’ll see this rumor everywhere today, but let’s try not to get too excited about it. A bunch of obvious info targeted at an even more obvious date.

  • Nathan Corachea

It says “wipe screen to unlock”

  • Dan

That phone is sexy! I’ll trade my GS3 in a sec..

  • Akashshr

It may seem odd for a company to talk up its next product so soon after the last one, but perhaps it’s a deliberate marketing move in light of a certain new contender OR Shows no confidence that the S3 is good enough to hold off competition! Really silly on Samsung’s part!

  • The Dude

    Begun, the rumors have.

  • Diablo81588

    Photoshop render.

  • fanboy1974

If I was a S3 buyer I would not upset. We are in full nuclear war and the only way to fight back is with bigger, better and faster devices. But let me buy the Note 2 okay Samsung.

  • Trueblue711

Samsung has to remember that delaying the S3 announcement and building up the hype is part of what led to the S3 to be as big of a launch and success as it was. Pumping out phones as quickly as Motorola isn’t going to help them at all.

Also, I don’t think the 5″ rumors are true, because it’s blurring the line between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series.

  • Southrncomfortjm

Samsung is designing itself into a corner here as they keep increasing the size of the screen. Will the Galaxy S5 have a 5.1 inch screen? I couldn’t see them going backwards in screen size, say to a somewhat more manageable 4.5″-4.8.”
Also, what’s with the two cameras on the back?

  • Buckoman

Soon there will be nothing left except screen.

    Revolutionary.

  • evltwn

Now that is an edge-to-edge screen. Like it.

  • ME

It looks like what the iPhone 5 should have been…

  • SAMBO

If the S4 looks anything related to the photo above, I’ll be VERY happy.

  • Paul

It’ll probably be their first phone with the much faster A15 based Exynos as well. None of this would be surprising.

  • Frank F

U know at first I wasn’t even going to read this article but then it got me thinking …why not? I mean its not that bad of an idea in that if ur going to try to compete with apple why not space out ur release date on flagship phone to give it more of its own spotlight …u know people who want apple are always going to buy apple and vice versa …for the undecided apple you might as well take away …well the new iPhone is only 3 months away …make it harder on them and allow ur product to shine alone for longer …in that view it makes sense

  • PC_Tool

Nexus version of this device…with the same looks please.

    Thanks in advance.

(See? I thanked them in advance…now they *have* to do it…)

  • jer85008

    I call BS.

  • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I could see a slightly larger screen, they would just have to make the current SGS3 an edge to edge and it would be around 5 inches or so.

  • Knlegend1

I hope this is a mock up because they are asking to be sued. With that said this thing is beautiful.

  • http://twitter.com/dubius David Du Buron

    I see a 3D camera…

    • Paul

The picture was drawn by someone who has nothing to do with Samsung. It’s just speculation of what it could look like (I seriously doubt they will make it 3D).

  • Jarrett Guma

    Rectangle with rounded corners!
    Rectangle with rounded corners!
Rectangle with rounded corners! Run to the hills! Here comes Apple!

  • paul_cus

    Yay, fake renders.

  • shavi

    Desing sucks!

    • JolleyMan

Please use proper spelling in your criticisms.

  • Answer2K1

I actually prefer the method of:
    Great phone/Great Screen Size (4.5-4.8)——>
Better Phone/increase the screen size without increasing the phone size ICS/JB is perfect for this——->
Better Phone/and NOW increase the phone size to increase screen size if you must (but still offer great options at smaller sizes).

  • AndroidGuy

I bet this is a fake rumor. February is too soon. I’ll laugh at this one.

  • mikeym0p

5″ becoming the standard for flagships?! What cruel world is this!
I hope this stays a rumor.

    • violator702

Wouldn’t be too bad if it has on screen keys.

  • T4rd

Lol, bad render is bad. Wipe screen to unlock..? So I have to use my whole palm to unlock it?! And two cameras?? 3D already debuted and died with the Evo 3D and Optimus 3D. No one wants two mediocre cameras on their phone.

Also, since we’re going all out on the render; where’s the slot that prints money and doubles as a flesh light..?! =p

    • r0lct

I’m interested in this flesh light feature, how does it work?

  • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

I hate the rounded-corner rectangular design. I hope they can make something with a sharper corner.

  • summit1986

… will come running ICS. :p trolololo

  • spunker88

Would be nice if they finally made the switch to on screen buttons. Also needs more room for the Verizon logo. :-)

    • moelsen8

they could probably just fit a small verizon logo in the navbar where the home normally is button is. wouldn’t that be something? :P

      • Trueblue711

Actually, Verizon used to do this on the LG feature phones. The nav bar was formed into their checkmark logo underneath the cell signal strength indicator. It was a very subliminal way to put their logo there.

    • T4rd

There’s room at the top left on the front. Verizon will probably squeeze a logo onto the chin too somehow like they did with the Note 2 too.. SMH..

    • mikeym0p

Imagine when phones go bezel-less they try to watermark our screens with the logo. I can easily see them trying to do that.

      • fixxmyhead

bahaha i was seriously thinking the same. verizon will find a way. do not underestimate verizon

  • BrianLipp

forget these 2013 rumors, lets get some Nexus rumors started! Specifically some non-Samsung related ones, because the new nexus this year better not just be a GNex 2 (especially not the one being rumored)

    • mikeym0p

I’m really hoping for Sony or HTC on the next one. The Experia T looks great!

    • danny

Seriously, if you’re just gonna post rumors at least post good ones

  • Scott Willenborg

I guess my S3 gets a Jellybean TW Rom in February!!!

  • evcon

    That render. Just stop.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bmyton Ben Myton

I am crazy curious where that render came from. It’s almost perfect in its awfulness!

  • Droid4All

What would be pretty epic: Make this the size of the GNexus, make it fully square, minimize edge bezels and bottom bezel, have on-screen buttons, end up with epic phone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/travis.oakshott Travis Oakshott

At least they are planning on using on-screen keys this time around. And edge to edge display.

  • carlisimo

Uh, who came up with that rendering? I doubt it technically infringes on anything, but the resemblance to the iPhone5’s rear panel is… unfortunate. And unnecessary.

  • Droid4All

Watch this beast randomly have 3 GBs of ram carrier style.

  • http://twitter.com/JSIN1605 Jason Mullens

    now thats a sexy device

  • ddevito

Android OEMs need to slow down. This is why people are jumping ship

    • John

I wouldn’t necessarily think that quite yet. Android’s activations are skyrocketing still.

    • http://twitter.com/JSIN1605 Jason Mullens

slow down so when you go to update you have older hardware?

    • rodney11ride

agree with the slow down but not the jumping ship.. after recent release of iphone5 i am seeing large numbers actually start to admit that bigger is better and are tired of iphones lack luster upgrade

    • Nick S.

      lul wut?

  • rodney11ride

thats what i call “edge-to-edge” display

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

That is what I call a ridiculous looking mockup

      • John

        HAH

      • rodney11ride

        for sure… just mocking motorola

  • ceejw

I do not understand the trend to keep making our phones bigger and bigger. I don’t want a phone with a 5″ screen. My Galaxy Nexus is already too big, I wish Samsung would make another Nexus the size of the Nexus S.

    • Diana

Tell me about it, these giant phones are a major turnoff.

    • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ Stynkfysh

I see it as the migration from a phone with computer functions to a computer with phone functions. The bigger screen facilitates more computer. I do (and want to do) so much with my device that I welcome the bigger screen.

    • mikeym0p

Or at least make phones that are spec’d the same but in different form factors.

      • ceejw

Agreed. The Droid Razr M is a good start. Hopefully we start seeing more phones with that form factor.

  • https://twitter.com/paladaxar Paladaxar

“It will run Android”!? You don’t say! :)

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Was hard to write that with a straight face.

    • angermeans

What about it will “compete directly with Apple” lol doesn’t every smartphone in some way compete directly with apple?

      • shane cone

That part that it looks like an iPhone 5

        • michael arazan

The whole reason they released this announcement was because of the iPhone 5, some say to try and muffle some of the thunder, that’s what some tech articles authors are saying, that the next best thing is right around the corner. So i figure if they release another nexus it won’t measure up to the sg4 in specs since it will come out before the sg4.

  • http://twitter.com/eddieruko Eddie Rivera

    one of the worst renders.

    • Jroc869, Cool story bro

Thats the first thing I thought, its like someone intentionally tried to make it look like the *phone with the flat edge all the way around and just the general design. Some idiots out there will actually think this is real and swear Samsung is copying apple again.

  • derpeh

    uh oh…rounded edges…we could have a problem here….

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

      can we not…

    • summit1986

      Two-tone back… uh-oh

      • Guest

i saw the metal and the glass, and I was just like: You better not start this again, Samsung

        • michael arazan

Samsung doesn’t have a logo for themselves or one on their devices. Maybe their Logo should be a worm, since worms eat apples.

          • jj

worm logo would be awesome. u know what would be even better. is a worm eating thru an apple logo would make apple hate it even more even after the samsung commercials

  • http://www.facebook.com/bmyton Ben Myton
  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I call BS on a 5 inch screen too… that will just kill the Note market that’s only now building it self up. And doing a good job.

    • InyRules

It will also alienate the consumers who aren’t into the tablet/phone hybrid. A lot of people I know (not scientific I know, lol) still feel the 4.3 to 4.6 inch phone is the sweet spot. Personally, I’d never want to go any bigger than my GNEX.

      • inzandity

I do like the screen size on my Gnex, but I will be jumping about the G-Note 2 train when it does come to Verizon. I think 5.5″ will be my absolute limit on screen size though.

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

hmmmmm that’s what you say now. Lets’ not forget the 7inch Original tab was a Phone outside the US

          • moelsen8

            seriously? i didn’t know that..

          • fixxmyhead

nexus 7 my other phone literally

        • fixxmyhead

not even. im already using my nexus 7 to make phone calls but only cuz im on the 30$ walmart plan and i only have 100 mins

          • InyRules

On that plan too! Love it, but the limited minutes always kill me.

          • fixxmyhead

well i dont use that many anyways but to solve ur problem get a nexus 7 and tether to ur phone, free minutes but u look like an idiot doing it lol. but u could always get a bluetooth earpiece

        • mikeym0p

Every year people say that, but we are reaching the limit in how small we can squish the bezel. I agree though, ~4.7 with on screen buttons is perfect and shouldn’t get any bigger for the average user IMO.

          • inzandity

I have been on the “bigger screen” bandwagon since I started using smartphones. 5.5″ would be my limit because that’s the largest I think I could possibly fit in my pocket. My buddy has a current gen note and it feels right about at the limit at 5.3″.

    • j

agreed. bs on 5″. note isn’t for everyone.

  • Butters619

Why would they go back to announcing it at MWC? Phone companies have moved away from MWC/CES announcements to better align with product launch dates. I think Moto learned this lesson the hardest with the Bionic.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Exactly.

    • JolleyMan

Have they released the Bionic, yet? On the plus side, I was waiting on the Bionic and opted not to get the T-Bolt since the Bionic was expected shortly after the T-Bolt. I think that was a good call. Then, I decided to wait on the RAZR since the Bionic wasn’t very impressive to me when it finally was released. So, the RAZR isn’t bad, but if I had only waited 2 more months for the MAXX… Ha!

  • Christopher Hsu

Give me one amazing camera vs two mediocre 3d cameras.

    • r0lct

It’s so when you talk ot your phone you can pretend it’s looking back at you with it’s eyes…

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

ON every blog ive seen this story I’ve called BS. It just doesn’t make any sense. The S3 will be their biggest selling handset yet, they won’t just cut into those profits prematurely. And Sammy is developing a habit of not showing Big Ticket items at trade shows, and rather use their Solo Unpacked Events. I don’t see the S4 until maybe Late June/July. With announcement a lot close to that time frame.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bmyton Ben Myton

    Seriously? “Wipe Screen to Unlock”?

    • Mclovin

      You beat me to it!

    • George264

It will only unlock with your personalized micro fiber cloth, you lose it, you’re screwed.
      INNOVATION!

    • angermeans

      S Wipe?

      • Diablo81588

        Just a copy of Apple’s A-Wipe.

        • Stevedub40

          A**-Wipe

  • kevintufts

Its going to be awkward to wipe with the screen everytime I want to unlock.
