1-Click Bootloader Unlock App Now Available for the Verizon Galaxy S3 in the Play Store (Updated)

Last night, a tool was released that allows for the Verizon Galaxy S3 to run an unsecure bootloader. It was victory for all, even those that don’t have a GS3. The champagne could be heard popping across the country, well, except for from those who don’t run Mac or Linux on their desktops. Windows users were left out for the time being, but as you would have to expect these days, another simpler method was in the works. That new method, comes in the form of a 1-click app that is available for free in the Google Play store.

All you have to do is root your Galaxy S3 first, then load this app up and click the massive “Unlock” button. That is seriously all you have to do. Devs are looking into a re-lock methods, so stay tuned for those.

Update: The app has received an update allowing for users to re-lock their bootloader if need be. Get on it.

you guys are funny with your bashing verizon comments. samsung is a supplier to verizon with this device. they could not release a bootloader unlock tool unless verizon had already approved of it first. they didnt go around verizon.

Installed CM10 on my Verizon Galaxy S3—Wow the performance is insane!!! Insanely fast.

For anyone looking to do the same follow the steps in this link

  • Itchy_Robot

The app description states that it requires root to install. Why?
I am so confused with the difference between root and unlocked bootloader. Can someone explain for the stupid people?

    • JoshGroff

Root gives you superuser (administrator in windows terms) access, an unlocked boot-loader gives you the ability to load homebrew ROMs without requiring them to be built around certain parts of stock (kernel and some other things, I’m not entirely sure.)

    • Z750

Root is like administrator (windows) You can do what you want within windows, but you’re still stuck with windows.
An Unlocked bootloader is like access to the BIOS (Pre-Boot) so instead of booting into Windows, you could boot into some other OS.

  • FortitudineVincimus

downloaded it to have it, not yet using it… yet

  • John Mozelewski

I’ve got gnex but happy to see s3 will get some awesome Roms now. I hope moto gets unlocked boot loaders from Google and they may have a phone as good as the og droid again

  • J Dub

Everyone post on their Twitter page about this. That’ll show ‘em. If they would have just been civilized and released an unlock tool like HTC has then they could at least control the unlock. Now they have no idea if you have unlocked.

  • Aaron Anderson

Thank God!! Cause I was not tryin give my phone up & go to sprint… Now to get a new battery cause the factory one sucks monkey balls

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bobby-Mei/789119685 Bobby Mei

Is there a one click root method for the GS3 yet?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000278863665 Charley Beeman

you are so dumb. SMH this is for the Verizon GS3, and you dont need something like this for any other s3 as they dont have locked bootloaders

      • honk

you are just as dumb to not know the difference between root and a bootloader.

  • trixnkix637

So what if we are already running the kexec version of bypassing the bootloader? Can we use this app or am I supposed to revert to something else?

  • Jeff

So you need to be rooted?

    • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

lol, wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. What do you honestly think?

  • Steve Douglas

Just curious can verizon for an ota update and brick or phone? Or are the ota something that you have to accept?

    “that was easy”

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

Easy!!!, Unlocked bootloader in seconds and now running CM10 Kexec-less Rom. I don’t see myself going back from this now unless something catastrophic happens to my phone where I have to take it back to Verizon. Still kinda confused on how to get it back to stock though if I need to do such a thing. Do I need to re-lock the bootloader first before I flash the stock firmware in Odin or what…..

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/Q2PJDGRUQ7FXJX5SEGFNWNKNHY Like

Where can I find that rom kid

    • JoshGroff

I’m pretty sure flashing you have to re-lock before flashing official software.

      • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

        not necessary at all.

        • JoshGroff

I know with HTC you do, so I figured other OEMs also implemented that feature, good to know.

  • Ethan

I can honestly say that I read the news and actually popped champagne in celebration (well, to put in a mimosa- I’m not THAT crazy)! Still, this is amazing progress and a HUUUUUUGE middle finger to Verizon. Suck it, Big Red; Love, your loyal customer base.

  • flosserelli

They should change the icon to a big fat middle finger.

  • Martin Bauer

This is GREAT ! – In Principle alone this is a win ! Plus now I can use a 3rd party app to S/R texts instead of GV ! awesome job ‘brothers in arms’ – Verizon – ‘Don’t tread on Me!’

  • jaybar

Literally the easiest thing ever, my phone instantly got 1000% better

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.schrauth Andrew ‘Dre’ Schrauth

They just updated this app in the play store to include relocking the bootloader as well! whoop!

  • http://twitter.com/TanookiTravis Travis Hendricks

So what exactly can you do with an unlocked bootloader that I can’t do with just rooting?

    • Steve Benson

For one thing, you can ditch the half-asses kexec method. Two, you can run legit ROMs and Kernels without the kexec workaround. Three, you can tell Verizon to F off because the Android community will never be stopped…..unless it’s a Moto phone

      • WrinkledForeskin

I wouldnt call kexec half assed, its all we had till now that actually worked.

  • lilkerv90210

Now all we need is a one click root/unroot method for the galaxy s3

    • ApplesNAndroids

There is a one click root. Also, I’ve found using OTA root keeper to delete SU and a system restore will delete all evidence of root.

  • harryballs1234

Guess Motorola is better at locking their bootloaders cause the razr has been out for almost a year and nobody has a clue….

    • JoshGroff

Motorola also uses some sort of crazy encryption. (not sure much on different encryption types, but I heard it’s incredibly hard to crack)

      • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

makes samsung look like a 2 digit encryption.

        • JoshGroff

After reading more on encryption, that’s ridiculous, they use 128 bit right?

  • burpootus

I hope the Samsung person responsible for leaking this doesn’t get caught.

    • https://plus.google.com/110773438514346746273/ tjhrulz

I hope he gets a raise

  • cmorty72

Shame nothing like this exists for anything Moto . -.-

    • fanboy1974

I up voted this 5 times and it let me.

  • Davros

Nice. Took 30 seconds to download the app and unlock. Now 100% happy with this phone.

  • fanboy1974

As a Nexus owner this is excellent news. I wonder what Samsung is going to do with those special unlocked S3’s they were about to sell. For one thing their not so special anymore.

    • cgalyon

Would not be at all surprised if they hadn’t even begun working on that and just accidentally leaked the bootloader. Easier for them and better for their customers.

      • JoshGroff

        Probably, Samsung is pretty sneaky.

Thank you !! Thank you !! Thank you !! Thank you !! Development community for you hard work and diligent !! #LongLiveDevelopers #LongLiveVerizonGalaxySIII

  • http://twitter.com/jinhao jinhao

somewhat misleading… i’m guessing you’re referencing rooting your phone as just the rom, right? root the rom, unlock (root) the bootloader

    • crane476

No. If you want the specifics, an insecure bootloader was leaked. This allows us to flash custom ROMS and Kernels without Kexec. So yes, the SGS3 HAS been unlocked, meaning the bootloader.

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30274025&postcount=317

      • Droosh

I guess when bootloaders are hacked to pieces by XDA members trying to exploit it it becomes “insecure?”

    • http://twitter.com/Ike_Farmer Chris Franzen

what the hell are you talking about…

  • Dohman

I wish I had something like this for my Bionic. oh why did I ever get that phone?

Don’t feel bad, I had one too.. Then I went back to tbolt until GS3

    • JoshGroff

      *cough* safestrap *cough*
Not quite an unlock, but a bypass works just fine.

  • http://twitter.com/TanookiTravis Travis Hendricks

Would this in anyway help me get my rooted GS3 some Google Now and CMW Recovery mode? I’m not allowed to load custom ROMs, that’s why I’m asking.

    • nyr2k2

The developer of this app has a custom recovery flash app as well, that has been out for some time. Look for it in the market, it’s called “EZ-Flasher.”

    • Droosh

Check XDA. There is a Good Google Now hack that works with stock 4.0. Word is 4.1 is just around the corner though.

    • http://twitter.com/TanookiTravis Travis Hendricks

Oh nice, both are good bits of news. Thanks.

    • crane476

CVPCS just released another CM10 nightly update for the unlocked bootloader. Just installed it. Its extremely stable!

    • Droosh

I’m rockin Synergy. IMO the AOSP ROMs aren’t there yet and I’m not ready to give up that much functionality. Try Imoseyon’s Kernels for eith TW or AOSP as well.

  • T4rd

Someone go post this on Verizon Wireless forums so it can be deleted =p.

    • JoshGroff

I’m almost tempted to do that. I posted requesting the IMM76L system image to be posted so I can revert my sister’s Xoom to stock un-rooted (wasn’t sure if it’s safe to revert to 3.2 from ICS) and got a PM stating that this isn’t the place to talk about hacking, and my post was edited removing anything that even mentioned root. You would think developer forums would be quite lenient with such things.

      • Anonymous

You are an evil hacker, sir. That means you are a bad guy.

        • JoshGroff

According to Motorola, doing anything but residing in their controlled box is hacking, kind of like some other company I know. (even though the Xoom was kind of made for that purpose…)

  • Futbolrunner

    Deez nuts Verizon!!

  • Nick

I unlocked the Bootloader with this app. Its the easiest freaking thing I have ever done.

  • Knlegend1

Wow now thats amazing. Way to stick it to verizon by putting it in the play store.

    • Droosh

And now Verizon isn’t even allowed to request that Google blocks it.

Anyone who doesn’t have an S3 probably shouldn’t be on this site anyway. They should rename this place S3Life

      • fartbubbler

people used to say that about the GNex too. It’s just the latest biggest thing.

      • KleenDroid

LOL… I hear what you are trying to lay down but this place will always be Gnex Life.

        • JoshGroff

I thought it became Nexus 7 life?

  • Big B

Only thing that needs to be figured out is re lock for warranty purposes.

    • Knlegend1

      screw it

        • Cody

          Ill allow it here.

    • nyr2k2

        • PC_Tool

Switched out the second one for a cigar hand. Still not sure though. I’m thinking that maybe the cigar hand pairs better with the glass of whiskey hand…

  • kwubba

Somewhere I think the Google & Samsung guys are laughing their asses off @ Verizon…and saying “Suckas!!!”

    • michael arazan

Google should leverage Moto against verizon to get their way with some things. Without Verizon’s ocd obsession with the Droid branding, they would be lost it seems.

      • Steve Benson

Verizon owns the Droid trademark, not Moto. I’m sure Verizon would try to pass off the Droid name on any phone if it came to that.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=689773330 Brian Tesoroni

Actually Lucas Arts owns the Droid Trademark.

  • 4n1m4L

Oh boy. The exploit is extremely risky, and now we have a one click method. I hope its reliable

    • Peter Fadi Elias

Can someone please explain to me what unlocking does to the phone? Does it mess anything up on the device? void warranty? please explain? I have heard this forever but never understood!

      • 4n1m4L

Root allows apps to have access to things that they shouldn’t, which is use full in some cases. Unlock allows custom systems and kernels to be installed. It is very easy with either root or unlock to turn your device into a paperweight. So know what you are doing first, or ask. Xda is helpful. It does void your warantee, but with Odin you can undo the changes you made.(carefully)

      • http://twitter.com/ThePhillipBee Phillip Bee
    • Droosh

It’s not an exploit and it’s not risky provided you don’t stay on stock and accidentally accept a Verizon OTA.
