I wonder if we’ll here anything about an updated, consumer-release Nexus Q at the October 29 NYC event (where the Google/LG Nexus 4, an updated Nexus 7, and the Google/Samsung high-end Nexus 10 will supposedly also be unveiled)…

They can access Play Store movies and tv shows, you just have to go through the YouTube app right now. The community manager of the Google TV Google+ page has been saying an update is immanent that will let you actually buy/rent content from the Google TV and put that content into a separate app just like on phones and tablets.

I’m not saying it’s especially likely that the Nexus Q will be re-released as a Google TV, because that would require a lot of work. Aside from the hardware modification to add an HDMI input, they’d have to merge the Google TV-specific code into AOSP, and Google TV is still running Honeycomb and isn’t open sourced.

But Google did kind of undercut some of their OEM partners with a higher quality product with the Nexus 7 recently, so I don’t think that would hold them back if they thought it would jump-start the floundering platform (which it most certainly would).

I think their biggest hurdle for GTV support on a device with full Play Store access is content licensing. I assume that’s why current GTV can’t directly access all the Play Store movies and TV shows. So I’m not holding out too much hope for GTV support. Especially if they priced it under $300, Sony and Vizio I would imagine would be pretty pissed.

there are a lot of companies out there that could take some customer service cues from this company. Stuff happens when releasing a new product, but it is all how you manage customer satisfaction after the fact.

i bet they can afford to do this because the number or pre-orders was small. on another topic – picked up a nexus 7 from staples this weekend and am loving it so far (though I have heard of build issues with some and hope mine isn’t one of them)
