Skype with Video on Android Updated: Thunderbolt, DROID Charge, Revolution and Others Now Supported

Hard to believe, isn’t it?  The HTC Thunderbolt, the device that was supposed to kick off the Skype with Video campaign back in March is just now receiving it almost a month and a half after it was released to the Android Market.  The Skype team didn’t just stop there though and actually added 17 other top devices including the DROID Charge, LG Revolution and Samsung Galaxy S II to the supported list.  It looks like they’ve adopted the same model as Netflix (slowly but surely), but we’ll admit that we are still happy that it’s making its way onto some of our favorite phones.

Oh, we should probably point out that if your phone is running 2.2, like the Thunderbolt and Charge, you won’t be able to use your front camera with it.  Not sure what exactly Skype is thinking, but that’s what we have.

Here is the list of newly supported devices:

Acer A5
HTC Desire (2.2)
HTC Desire HD
HTC Evo 3D
HTC Evo 4G
HTC Flyer
HTC Incredible S
HTC Sensation
HTC Thunderbolt – Verizon (2.2) (US only)
LG Revolution – Verizon (2.2) (US only)
Samsung Droid Charge – Verizon (2.2) (US only)
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy S II
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
Sony Ericsson Xperia ray

Why put out an app that doesn’t allow you to see the person you’re chatting with and use the front facing camera? Fail Skype.

  • Cole Biffle

fail…whats tej point of skype on my phone if i cant use my front camera =/

  • Andy

no front camera support for TB

  • Stork1847

I downloaded this but can’t get the front camera to work. Only gives an option for the back camera. Am I missing something or will that be a later update?

    • Joos519

      Use Tango instead.

  • Ajbeanblossom

The video images seem to backwards, the smaller video is the other person while the larger video is my back camera image.  Also, same issue as others stated that I can’t use my front facing camera on my LG Revolution.

Skype suck sweaty balls, use Tango instead.

My wife and i got so relieved that John managed to complete his studies while using the ideas he discovered when using the web pages. It is now and again perplexing to simply be offering strategies which the others might have been selling. And we all see we have the website owner to give thanks to for that. The specific illustrations you made, the straightforward website navigation, the relationships you help foster – it’s all astonishing, and it’s really letting our son and us understand that situation is entertaining, and that is exceptionally pressing. Thanks for the whole thing!

Skype!!!! You ass dwelling monkeys!!!!  Talk about being un-fashionably late.  I’ve been using Tango for a while now on my stock thunderbolt with 2.2, (it does have it’s quirks now and then, but it works).

Tango works over wifi, 3g and 4g.  Skype doesn’t have support for 4g…not yet at least.   You can use your front camera and it creates a list of the contacts on your phone that use Tango too.  Support for PC to smartphone video calls are cumming soon to all of your faces!!!!

    • LionStone

well, the leaked version by DL worked perfect for me on my TB until the last update and then broke it…bastards!!! Now the leaked version will only give me audio, no video…Gonna root soon

  • nolam

WTF!!!! ={ The Droid 3 has been out for almost a month and still no support for video!!!!!!!!!

  • Cameltoe4me2

the TB is garbage. cant wait to get rid of mine.

  • http://twitter.com/nashmax73 TomAss (TA)

No FFC until Gingerbread…..which TB won’t have until “some time in the 3Q” like was said about the 2Q?   Seriously Skype, WTF?

  • http://www.facebook.com/nathanielnewmanmusic Nathaniel Newman

Of course Inc 2 is not on the list.

I and my guys happened to be following the great hints located on your web page and all of the sudden I had a terrible feeling I never expressed respect to the site owner for them. My men became glad to study them and already have sincerely been loving them. Appreciate your actually being considerably accommodating and for finding this form of amazing guides millions of individuals are really wanting to be informed on. My personal sincere apologies for not saying thanks to you earlier.

  • 123

It is amazing. Why would skype even bother releasing half baked product.

Previous leaked version had support for front facing camera, official one does not.

It seems there is more to this

    Phone sex anyone?

    • Travis

i was thinking the same thing,  it brings a whole new meaning to that.   just think of the services people can sell on ebay now.  skype time.

Skype + Microsoft = no FFC

    • Peter Bartholomul

skype+Microsoft= Video chat on android. How well did the skype video chat work on some android phones before Microsoft bought Skype? I’ll answer it for you in case you don’t remember. There was no Skype video chat on android before Microsoft bought it. It wasn’t until after that Skype started updating the app and adding video chat to a few phones and then slowly increased the amount of phones that support video chat. If 2.2 doesn’t support the front cam with skype I highly doubt its Microsofts fault or Skypes fault. Sounds more like the manufacturer of the phones fault. I’m glad Microsoft bought Skype because they are at least doing their job and giving most of the customers what they want which is video chat. If you own a phone with 2.2 then just root it and install a gingerbread rom. I rooted my thunderbolt within 2 hours without a single problem. and installed a gingerbread rom in about 30 minutes and video chat is working

  • Travis

its works on droid x (Kind of)   you have to go into settings and turn on video calls,  i can see video, but they can not see any video from droid x.

  • http://www.facebook.com/strom13 Joe Strom

Still no support for the Mytouch 4g? Ridiculous.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22402860 Chad Paffhausen

The reason it is 2.3 is because Android did not support front facing cameras until 2.3.  Before that the manufactures had to write their own code to get it to work.  It would be a lot of work for skype to get their video to work with each manufactures own code for the FFC.  So instead they just support 2.3.

    • Rast

Someone tell me how Yahoo Messenger works perfectly fine with video with the front cam on Froyo, but Skype doesn’t.

      • Rizzidy

        Or Tango…

  • 0mie

Thunderbolt works fine running CM7 both FFC and Back work

    • Fattie McDoogles

lol i was just about to ask if it worked on any of the ROMs out for the Thunderbolt

  • Provenpanic

Wtf, no D3 support at all?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Apparently no Motorola support at all.

      • Travis

turn on video calls in your settings

  • Rysdwn

yes, the front facing camara doesn’t work on Thunderbolt. that sucks.

    • Peter Bartholomul

it works on mine and works perfectly. just root the phone and install a gingerbread rom. its easy

  • Guest

Just root your phone and you can get skype to work with the ffc!

    • Rysdwn

how can i make it work with FFC

  • Radgatt

I know it says HTC incredible s is supported but will it work with a Droid incredible 2 running 2.3.3?

    • http://nienhouse.net/ Tyler Nienhouse

I have the same question. Anyone know?

  • Gee

I would like to point out that this just gives I-diots more ammo, thanks largely in part to the fracturing of the OS and the failure for these moron manufactures to standardize. Don’t get me wrong i hates I-zealots, but we as a community should take a unified stand against this. If all current devices were launched on 2.3 we wouldn’t have this problem.

    • Anonymous

There is no fracturing any more than there ever has been, get a grip.  Want standardization?  Get an iPhone or WP7 device.  I don’t want standardization because in order to have that all the manufacturers would have to use the same hardware and Google would have to stop releasing updates.

  • Sdffj

Jeez u people are unbelievable u bitch and cry cuz u don’t have skype then it comes and now u bitch more get over it if skype was that big of an issue for u then buy a phone that has a working skype on it

    • Peter Bartholomul

i agree. i want to like this comment more then once but cant. and most of these people are bitching that front cam doesnt work on their phone with skype and they are blaming skype even though it’s their manufacturers fault and their carriers fault for not releasing 2.3. i just rooted and running a 2.3.4 rom on my thunderbolt so i’m not complaining. i love the update

      • Rizzidy

Wrong.  The front facing camera works fine in 2.2 if you use Tango.  This is just a bs excuse from Skype.

  • Guttatae22

CCan’t even update it on my thunderbolt Smh once again another day with this Damn phone HTC VIGOR hurry up

    • Peter Bartholomul

can’t update skype so you will switch phones? maybe a smartphone isn’t right for you? I don’t think you are smart enough to operate a smartphone if you can’t figure out how to update an app. Try going back to flip phones. You will probably be more happy but I somehow doubt that.

  • http://www.brandongoodman.com/ Brandon Goodman

    Where’s the Honeycomb support?  WTF?

  • Unexpected62

Ughhh Droid3 needs support……but more importantly, WHERE IS THE NEW GOOGLE TALK FOR 2.3.4!??!

    • Gee

There is an installer app you can grab from XDA im using it on my rooted Galaxy 7 tab

  • FortitudineVincimus

    No Incredible 2

    • Anonymous

It’ll suck if Skype denies the DInc 2 through the end of 2011.

Which Samsung Tab does it mean? The old one or the 10.1? Can anyone confirm if it works on the Tab 10.1?

    • Gee

It works on th 7inch provided you dont have the Verizon one (2.2), or if you do have it you put a custom/sprints rom on it

  • Anonymous

It’s really funny that the DROID Charge is on that list, because it wont even be receiving Gingerbread. The Charge is going straight to Ice Cream.

    • Gee

      Keeeep telling yourself that

      • Anonymous

Lol i know what you mean. Samsung came out at one point and said there was no reason to push 2.3 because its not worth it.

        • Gee

Well isnt that just “Fascinate”ing. It not like samsung ever just drops the ball on their products…

    • http://twitter.com/KansasJayhawker Jonathan Reid

      HAHAHAHA

    • Peter Bartholomul

yea but the Ice Cream will be melted before the Charge actually gets it.

  • Anonymous

if you guys can download google talk that supports video. it works on my OG Droid perfectly. I couldn’t believe Skype released their app with no video a while back. So I tried google talk. it works pretty well.

  • Nailsmails

Does not work on D3, allows the setting but black screens

  • Jason

Wonder why none of the mototola devices are on the list for support?

    • Anonymous

      They’re blurred out.

      • Gee

Buwhahahahaha That was well played sir

Would like to have this on my Droid 3 :/

  • EC8CH

Just in time for the TB…

Right before it gets “replaced” by the Vigor :-P

  • mayur

Totally useless only works with rear facing camera on my Charge. Can’t change anything settings to make it front facing either.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

Supposedly this update will only work on the FFC if you are running Gingerbread. If running Froyo it only works on the back camera.

    • Jason

I have read that on a couple of other sights. Gingerbread is a must for this to work correctly

  • Anonymous

    “HTC Incredible S”
Did anyone try this on the Incredible 2 yet?

    • http://twitter.com/djstarion Francisco Rodriguez

Yeah, doesn’t work on Inc2. Won’t let you video chat. The patched APK from xda works though.

  • Dknyc

Will this work with the thunderbolts ff camera? It data somewhere that phones running froyo can only use the rear camera.

    • Anonymous

Read the whole post. Says right in there that the TB ffc won’t work on 2.2.

      • http://twitter.com/thetechguru_net thetechguru_net

except of course that the leaked version from like 2 months ago works fine with the Thunderbolt FF camera (although it most likely was modified explicitly for the TB by someone at XDA and Skype wants one model for all devices, so is waiting for the standardized FF API in 2.3).

        • LionStone

Can you or someone cite which version? I tried to go back and get it after the last update (stock T-Bolt) broke it…when I got a version to take…it only gives me audio…when I goto video it FCloses. Probably time to root it I guess…

      • Jim Ortmeier

I had the Thunderbolt for a few months. Video chat with the front fact camera worked fine on the Yahoo Messenger app with the available Video plugin. So if the Tbolt can make use of the FFC on 2.2 with Yahoo, that means that it is possible and not a hard limit of the OS.

The stupid thing is my Incredible2  does not work with the Yahoo app (apparentlly isn’t supported), on either 2.2 or 2.3. So to me this means that this falls on Skype.

    • Anonymous

Read the whole post. Says right in there that the TB ffc won’t work on 2.2.

    • Anonymous

If Skype is important to someone all you have to do is root and install Gingerbread.

  • mmafreak22

so stupid, does not support front facing cameras on android 2.2, why?!?!?!?!

    • LionStone

Yea, they shouldn’t say Skype w/ Video now supports TB when it does NOT. It should not be on the list…

  • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Yeah, but the Thunderbolt and the Charge need Gingerbread to use the FFC, right? My Charge on GB works with it, but others do not. Come on, Skype.

Oh, and can someone with a Droid 3 tell me if Skype works with their FFC?

    • Droiden

Yes, Kellex should update to mention that you need Android 2.3 to use the front camera with Skype:

      http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/skype-two-way-video-chat-finally-arrives-on-most-android-handset/

      • Gee

You can read right? “Oh, we should probably point out that if your phone is running 2.2, like the Thunderbolt and Charge, you won’t be able to use your front camera with it.  Not sure what exactly Skype is thinking, but that’s what we have.”

        • Jason

From all my readings on this sight, it unfortunatly seems as though people read the headline and then just start typing away! It’s embarrassin sometimes “but that’s what we have.”  LOL

          • Gee

            Lol its all true

          • Peter Bartholomul

not just on this site. in almost every single app i’ve downloaded most of the apps have at least one phone that isn’t supported and they mention it in the description. I look at most of the comments and they are of the idiots who own that phone complaining that they downloaded the app sometimes even paid for it and it doesnt work. and they want their money back.

          • Jason

People just don’t know what there doin alot of the time, quick to complain about something that’s there own fault. How many times has droidlife warned peeps about watching what apps they download? People still don’t pay attention and than complain about Google letting it happen to them!! Hard to fix stupid lol

    • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

Doesn’t work. Just tested out my Droid 3 calling an HTC Sensation. I can see him (flipped) but he couldn’t see me.

    • JVKing12

Cant get video at all on my d3
