Rumor: Has the DROID BIONIC Been Cancelled? (Updated)

First of all, we want to make sure you are all clear that this is just one giant rumor at this point, but that we’ve heard enough behind the scenes to at least raise the question.  We have always tried to keep you guys in the loop when we start hearing murmurs of things, and this is no different.  Here we go…

While I can’t go into a lot of details on what I’ve been told, just know that word on the street suggests that the DROID BIONIC has possibly been scrapped completely or severely delayed for the Targa.  This is a subject that has been tossed around with our sources for a couple of weeks now, but things have really come forward in the last couple of days.

Update:  Looks like Howard Forums members are hearing similar things.

Update 2:  Mr. Panda weighed in the other day at AC forums… (Cheers Paul!)

The Bionic will not be cancelled and is well on track for the expected release date. The issues that alot of people are claiming are due to release to larger testing group. Does the device have issues?? YES.. will be kill a release? NO chance in hell.. Its a 4.3 inch display dual core proc device running LTE, so battery and performance tweaks are ongoing with Motorola on a almost daily basis.

Update 3:  Our Panda friend is now hearing that changes are in order…

A recent story came out about the much anticipated Droid Bionic from Motorola being scrapped.   I checked into it and yes there are legs to it, but the final nail in the “bionic” has not been hammered as of yet.

Take it all for what it’s worth, but also know that we have reached out to Motorola for comment.

Update 4:  You can pretty much ignore the paragraph below.

And to counteract this rumor, let me just say that the device not ever seeing a store shelf would surprise the heck out of me.  Other than the Atrix, this was THE device to see at CES this year and has been the #1 requested phone on this site since January.  Many of you are waiting to upgrade because you want this phone and no other and I don’t blame you.  Let’s just hope we have more details soon, but a delay sounds more likely to me than anything.

Keep it here…

I can’t say where. But I’ve heard rumors that the Casio – GZone Android phone for Verizon is also discontinued. Sad too since it was the only smart-phone destined to Verizon that was water-resistant and mil specs.

  • Sob157

Why doesn’t Moto and VZW go the route of the PC gaming platform and release a crappy, buggy, unfinished versions, and fix (partially) via OTA updates. Its the wave of the future!

  • Anonymous

It’ll get released. Verizon just sucks when it comes to releasing new devices…plain and simple. Look at how long the Merge is taking and that device is mediocre as hell! The Bionic is basically the Atrix with WORSE specs yet the Atrix has BEEN out and we still have no inkling of a release date for the Bionic.

You’re really working my nerves Verizon!

    • KO

Wasn’t the Merge cancelled months ago?

    • Tim242

The Bionic’s specs ARE NOT WORSE than the Atrix. The Bionic has the bigger screen. As far as RAM, the Atrix only has 512 Megs available for the phone, the other half is partitioned for dock use.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Its because of the 4g the atrix doesn’t have problems because there not on a 4g network…every company is having problems tbh I wouldn’t care if this phone was 3g..4g is overrated

      • LionStone

yea, if you are not in a 4G area….

  • NewsWorthy

Could it be: This is the phone I have been waiting for but there has been quite a bit of new technology being released and rumored since its announcement. My question is, will it lack some of the features the the other phones being released around the same time will have? For instance, NFC & 3D. Do I absolutely NEED either of these things. No, but as I said yesterday, this industry is driven more by our wants and not our needs.

“Could it be” that talks of scrapping or delaying the Bionic are a result of trying to pack it with all the competitive features it could lack for the summer release? Just my $.02. Not sure what it’s worth to you.

I’m pissed. I’m one of the ones waiting to upgrade from the original Droid. This article (http://exm.nr/f3zR08) told me all I needed to know to make the choice between the Thunderbolt and Bionic. But if the Bionic doesn’t come out Thunderbolt it is.

  • Fresh

… as a thunderbolt owner, half of me wants to laugh in the face of all the haters who constantly bashed the phone…

… however, the other half actually feels kind of bad having gone through this situation a month ago…

so i’ll leave you alone and hope the hypebeastin’ part 2 isn’t too painful

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

I didn’t know there were preorders, commercials, etc of the bionic

  • Spyderman89460

I don’t care how low I ha e to wait… I want the BIONIC! Even if the bootloader is locked. I still rock the OG DROID (rooted of course) but would gladly upgrade.

I am going to laugh my ass off if this thing has the same battery issues the Thunderbolt had, after all the haters were taking verbal dumps all over the T’Bolt and people who didn’t want to wait for the Bionic.

Maybe they had a Sammy tablet moment and realized the device they were going to release wasn’t going to stand out as the best (which I know is all subjective). Sure it had great specs, but by the time it was rumored to be released it would have many peers on equal ground. Hopefully this means when they drop their next Veri$on flagship device they want to clearly have the best (spec’ed) device out.

True or not, this helped push my decision to drop Verizon and go back to Sprint and get an EVO 3D when they come out

  • Interstellarmind

i *WAS* looking forward to moto’s bionic until i got a thunderbolt. i’m now going to wait until htc’s dual-core offering.

htc let’s me (so far, at least) load custom kernels and ROMs, no problem, and actually has a fully featured camera (check out settings – you can adjust saturation, contrast, exposure, etc). two things that moto is too stupid to implement. plus my STOCK tbolt is as smooth, if not smoother than, my liberty 1.5 (and then leaked gingerbread) OC’d at 1.3 GHz DX was. I mean, c’mon, moto… WTF? you lost a loyal customer here to the more “Advanced” and average user friendly HTC.

I’m so happy I took the plunge with the Thunderbolt now

No way Motorola cancels this phone…might be a slight delay if the i*hone 5 is delayed…but there’s no chance this doesn’t appear in my hands at renewal time!

  • Analogpenguin

Just out of curiosity, is this Mr. Panda (or “blackmannx” if you click through to the AC forums post) guy some kind of industry insider? Because a quick glance at his post and his websites doesn’t really explain why his word should carry any special authority.

Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to figure this out.

    • NeedtheBionic

Ya, apparently he was SPOT ON on the TBolt release, when everyone else was incredibly wrong many times.

That’s just an example though he’s had more

  • Wctaylor79

BWAAA HA HA HA HA.. Take that HTC haters.. ok.. not really.. Sorry just had to do that.. In all honesty I don’t feel that they will cancel this. The Bionic looked to be at CES and still will be a beast of a phone. Yes I have a TB, but that was a choice I made because I prefer HTC over Moto, but the Bionic will be a beast when it finally does come out.. in 2012.. lol. .ok sorry again.. but really good luck to those waiting.. I was all in the hypebeast for the TB and this begins the hypebeast for the Bionic. Hang in there guys your day will come too..

  • Davros / aka Chris Nimon

  • FortitudineVincimus

it’s all about the battery… that is what is killing this thing I bet.

in all the amazing developments that the UI’s, form factors, designs, dual cores, memory and such have made….. battery life still blows and makes no appreciable gains. in all current electronics, it seems to be the big yet to be cleared hurdle.

    • Anonymous

With Carbon Nanotubes in the making battery life will be the last thing we worry about once that hits.

Glad I got the thunderbolt. This device makes me worry, along with the locked device, along with the battery issues that may cause with a dual core device. I’m happy waiting till something better comes along. If im wrong im wrong. But Im glad I purchased the TB now instead of waiting around.

  • Anonymous

Lol at all those people who hated on the thunderbolt for this. They’re both great phones in my opinion. How funny would it be if 4g pricing goes up and becomes tiered? And then this phone does get scrapped on top of that. Not even gingerbread optimizes dual core yet anyway (or am I wrong?) And this phone was going to be locked down as hell.
So I’m sitting pretty nice with my ‘bolt. Cyanogen will be out very shortly, and I’m locked in to 30 bones unlimited for 4g for 2 years.

Funny thing about these rumors, Theyre rumors. The release date could be in fact in May/June all along, but its our obsession with getting the inside track that has people going bonkers over this. The db getting released a month or two later than the rumored date isnt a win for tb’ers. Theyll still get benchmarked slower than the new kid on the block. (and still be stuck with a 1400mah battery ; )

Even if the Bolt were sub par I would still choose it over another locked down Motorola device. While the new Blur is much improved over past versions, you have little to no freedom with the phone.

I would choose the D1 over a locked down Bionic.I left my D1 for a D2 and DX and regretted it but it was too late. Now I am in a T-Bolt and am happy again with true freedom.

However if you don’t care about being locked down none of this matters and it’s just a matter of what phone’s features you like best.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Hardy/10051816 Anthony Hardy

Is it locked down yes did the Droid X still get GB before most every other phone yes. I’ve been on the new blur and rooted GB for weeks on my X averaging 2400 in quadrant OC. One thing Motorola is unquestionably #1 at is is supporting their devices bug fixes to OS updates we get them first. When I sign a 2 year contract Support over those 2 years is a major consideration.

          • Anonymous

Yes Gingerbread and the new Blur are really good. And it should keep many people very happy.

But I still prefer my Droid 1 and my Thunderbolt. I guess if I had not started with the Droid 1 I would have been happy with what little the X could do. But please don’t misunderstand what I am saying, the X is an awesome phone.

Moto’s new vision statement: The OG Droid was an anomaly. Since then, we’ve tired Blur and locked bootloaders. We’ve tried an overpriced and unfinished tablet. We’re too impatient to wait for our own OS to fail. Perhaps this will help.

Bionic or Targa, doesn’t really matter, I don’t think moto is going to not release a dual core 4g phone for VZW. Since this thing is more or less a less-RAM atrix, which they released, there can’t be any technical problem with it. The only reason to cancel it that I can see is maybe they fear by the time it comes out it will seem too old and rehashed as a VZW atrix, so they want to use their “First 4G Droid” card on something more worthy?

I read somewhere (maybe here) that there will be an Atrix version (not bionic) for VZW. If that’s the case & if the bionic is going to be cancelled, that would be a good reason.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LEP2PO6BC524BBC4K5CRPFOJFY josh

I dont forsee the Atrix for Verizon ever. Reason being is Atrix=Bionic. The Atrix is going to sprint though.

        • Anonymous

I know the Bionic was supposed to be Atrix on VZW which is why I said not Bionic in my comment. I heard the Atrix is coming to another carrier but thats so far in the back of my mind that maybe it is going to Sprint & I saw something for VZW and just combined it. I wasn’t really paying attention to it at the time.
