Download: Stock Android 2.3.2 for Original DROID by Peter Alfonso

Original DROID users, it’s time to get your Gingerbread on and you can thank our friend Peter Alfonso for it.  With most of us accepting the fact that the OG will never see an official Android 2.3 build from Moto, Pete has taken it upon himself to make sure you get damn close.  His newest ROM is a stock AOSP 2.3.2 build which is about as new as you’ll see, but the plans are for this to be updated as Google updates, meaning you’ll definitely see 2.3.3 the minute it’s available.  And when I say “stock” I’m not messing around.  Sure, he tweaked some things here and there to give you a great experience, but on the outside, it will look just like an official update that you have received OTA.  Stock launcher, ringtones, wallpaper, boot animation and neural network live paper are all included, so this won’t feel like a “custom” ROM, but that’s the point.

The goal is for this to become a way to keep the hundreds of thousands of OG users running the latest Android build.  You’ll notice in the filename below a “GPA10″ which is the start of his naming convention.  As you see that number continue to rise, that will likely mean that you need to update to the latest build.

And if you don’t want that 100% stock feel, don’t worry as he’ll be adding features to Bugless Beast.

Thanks Pete!

Flash to your phone just as you would any other ROM.  Please make a backup!

Additional details and support can be found at Pete’s site.

So I tried it and have couple of questions.

    1. I used ClockworkMod ROM Manager to backup my current official Droid rom.
    2. I used ClockworkMod ROM Manager to flash the droid with the new ROM. I selected to Wipe data and cache. Got the new ROM and was able to boot up. Entered google account credentials got the contacts, but only paid apps. None of the none paid apps were displayed in the My Apps.
    3. Successfully restored old ROM and decided to flash without wiping data and cache. Successfully flashed the rom, but after the phone restarts is getting stock in boot animation.

How do I fix the getting stock in boot animation?

    • Soryimslow

      reboot into recovery and restore.

      • Astroprojector

restore what? I already restore original backup.

I tried to different ways. First does not loads the apps. Second will not boot. If someone tried flashing without wiping data and cache or flashed clean and was able to get all the apps, I would greatly appreciate your help.

        • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

did you buy TiBu…go back to your old rom and get it if you dont have it. Backup all of your apps there under batch. Put this ROM on your phone, download TiBu, then restore all apps with data. make sure under preferences you have restore market link also checked. I ran into the same problem, but once TiBu was done all of the apps showed up in the marketplace

as far as the apps go…i keep a list of the apps i have, its not hard to go back in and re-download them…

so far, camera doesn’t work.. .. i’m a sad panda

    • Rendar

I just tested the camera & vid camera on mine and they both worked fine. Don’t know what to tell you….
Could the camera be physically broken on your droid?

    • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Yup, mine’s working fine as well.

  • Deserteagle

I am liking liquid 1.1 gingerbread much better.

Works well installed on my OG.

  • Tumausmc

newb here, whats the best link for rooting instructions so i can run this rom?

    • Thesaber2000

There is a link on the bar at the top of the page(full site, not mobile) it says ROOT. Click on that, that should help.

      • Tumausmc

thanks for the direction, im currently mobile so i will have to wait till afterwork to play with it

I like Pete’s ROMs but I’ve been using Liquid Gingerbread. They just hit 1.1 this week, which fixed the camcorder. Now that LGB is fully functional, I don’t see the need to go back to stock Gingerbread, I wouldn’t want to give up all the extra tweaks that Liquid added. And for all the people who keep saying LGB is not real gingerbread, that is false. It is fully compiled from AOSP 2.3 plus CM codebase for some of the tweaks, plus Liquids original code. Phone info shows Android 2.3.2 – it’s the real deal people.

  • Tesseract 3

Just flashed it to my phone, it’s… awesome. Love it. Thanks for sharing.

  • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

For people asking how to do this, here’s my really high-level guide (please, people that know more than me — correct any obvious mistakes). I’ve just done this on my phone and it seems to be working fine. I used ROM Manager (free version will work for this purpose, but I recommend that you upgrade to the pro license, as I have):
1.) Download the ZIP file and place it somewhere on your phone’s SD card. Make sure you know where it is, and make sure the path to the ZIP file has no spaces or special characters in it.
2.) Open ROM manager and choose “Install ROM from SD Card”
3.) Locate the ZIP file on your SD card where you put it (with no spaces or special characters in the file name) in step 1, above.
4.) Select the ZIP file. ROM manager will then ask you if you want to Wipe Data and Cache (the answer is YES — check it off) and if you want to make a backup (the answer here is also YES — check it off).
5.) ROM manager will take care of the rest — it will reboot in to recovery mode, create a backup for you, and then install Pete’s 2.3.2.

What did I miss? Anyone else have additional insights to offer?

    Hope it helps…

    • FortitudineVincimus

make a backup of your current ROM first!!! if this pukes, you can always roll back. that is always step #1

      • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Yeah — step 4.) in the process suggests that you use the “Backup Existing ROM” option in the restore step… are you suggesting that it needs to be done before this process? I guess I could — but I find it more convenient to do it all in one step. Any thoughts on why that might be an issue, doing it that way? If so, I need to change my ways! Thanks for the info!

    • Scottholstein Sh

Phil, read over this problem. You seem to have some knowledge. I really need some help. I have been rooted for a year. Never had an issue like this. I attempted to flash a stock rooted image from ROM manager. Now I cannot boot in recovery with clockwork mod. All I can do is a factory reset. I can access my phone files and see zip files and backups that I have made. I have one that I just made tonight. But I cannot install a backup because I cannot get to clockwork mod recovery. I installed Universal Androot. It tells me I am already rooted. But I can’t get any of my apps to gain root access. I have a superuser icon and app…but it won’t give any programs root access. Universal Androot won’t unroot the phone either. I tried to rename one of my zip files update.zip and install from the factory reset screen. No dice. I need someone who has good knowledge. Not just someone from any forum. Please tell me…how can I get clockwork mod recovery back. Or should I do something else?

      • Thesaber2000

Sounds like your not rooted, even though you have the su app. I’m assuming you using a droid? What build? I don’t think androot works for frg22d and above. Have you tryed rooting using the rsd lite method?

    • BYU

so this means i have to put all my contacts and such back in the phone after correct?

Phil greetings to say I have OG DROID and i went purchased ROM MANAGER but its for rooted phones only so when i run the app is keeps getting errors I cannot boot in recovery or install zip file errors every where

  • Rendar

I’ve got it installed & running my original Droid. Really like it so far, but noticed 3 small things.
(Running SetCPU to OC to 800MHz)

    1) When playing music and using the phone, the music seems to skip a lot.
    2) Skype is available in the market, but will not install?
    3) The Slingplayer app does not appear in the market?

Anyone have any clue on any of these items?

    • Sean T Baker

I’m also having the skipping issue – does anyone else have this problem, or does anyone know of a fix?

      • Droidforlife

I had the skipping issue initially but then after installing a new kernel (I use P3Droid LV 1000MHz), no skipping!

        • Rendar

Yep. The skipping issue was definetly because of the kernal. I installed the kernal that Pete recommended on his website and now it’s working beautifully, not skipping a beat. The only thing I’ve noticed is a bunch of missing apps. (Skype, Slingplayer, NHL Gamecenter Live). Obviously, this is not Pete’s problem, I am assuming those apps have simply not been updated for Gingerbread? Stinks, I hope they get updated soon. If anyone has information on apps that don’t function with this ROM, please post.

How do u make a backup file on the OG Droid?

    • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

I just wrote up a quick “how to” above that speaks to making the backup and installing this thing. Hopefully that helps.

Has anyone tried this, that had previously been running CM7 Nightlies? I liked Petes other roms that he had out before they seem to be very smooth with good battery life, but these CM7 nightlies are also very smooth and i also like the new options that they have been implementing, like the new theme switcher.

Whoa wait, did milestones get stock gingerbread first? We had this last week! Suck it americans!

    • Anonymous

O wait have we had froyo a year before you wait did they ever release froyo for your phone?? O and we had Gingerbread on our phones ( OG DROID, NOT MILESTONE) about a week or two after the Nexus S was released.

What kernel can we use for overclocking? I’m rocking P3Droid on my CM6.1.2 install right now.

Do Froyo kernels work or does GB require new kernels?

    • Porkchop62882

yeah, I Need at least 1ghz. Anyone?

      • Porkchop62882

UPDATE: just installed P3 LV 250-1000 and it’s working great, will update if I run into any problems.

          Thanks Pork, that’s good news.

          • Porkchop62882

I’m getting terrible battery life on the P3 1ghz kernel, as well as the one suggested by Pete though Twitter. What kernel are you running? How’s the battery life?

anyone else having imap issues? i was able to add one account but when i tried adding a 2nd account it kept telling me the username and password were wrong. I installed k9 mail and used the same configuration and everything worked. Something seems off on the stock email app.

Pete you rock! Gingerbread is fast and working great!

    • http://parker-cs.com/MediaManager.aspx Kwparker80

I had that problem once with Gmail. Had to go to Gmail on my computer and searched the suppport info for the problem. It popped up a solution to reset something in Gmail. Clicked the link they provided and all was well after that.

can you point me to working steps for installing ROMS?

I also have super user on my phone and im not rooted!! What the Hell is going on?

Hoping this one will work well. I’ve been trying some of the CM7 nightlies (OG) and works pretty well, but I’m experiencing issues with my Exchange not refreshing. Yesterday tried the Liquid GB and I liked it a lot, and it looked like it was working for a while, then later in the day, Exchange stopped refreshing again. Anyone else having those issues with any of those builds?

    • Mike1825

Yeah I had the same problems with Liquid. Exchange wouldn’t load unless I rebooted the phone.

      • Anonymous

Didn’t have too much luck. Exchange seemed to have the same issues. Worked for a bit but stopped refreshing. seems to be a problem with anything gingerbread. If anyone knows a fix, that’d be awesome. Btw, I have wiped data/cache prior to install.

  • http://twitter.com/ThePeacedOut Phil Stout

Thanks Kellex, you gave my OG Droid a few more happy days! :)

Will the DX get Gingerbread love? Officially, I mean.

    • Anonymous

My personal prediction is it will get Gingerbread 2.4 later this year and that’ll be the end of its official upgrade life.

      • Anonymous

Well 2.4 is supposedly only adding dual-core compatibility so there is no reason for the DX to get it.

        • Anonymous

I think 2.4 will be the standard Gingerbread OS (I could be wrong, but I doubt it). Moto will wait for that, since they can then focus on development of the same OS for the X, 2, Pro, Bionic, and Atrix.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000475533643 Geoff Atteberry

actually, it adds support for dual-core apps on single core phones. so it would be relevant for the DX.

    • dmass

Ain’t no other way we’re going to get Gbread love if it ain’t official (unless they crack open the bootloader).

  • Kevoskee

Making the og still look good, trying it now!

Does anyone still have this old phone? It reminds me of Zack Morris…

    • EC8CH

Zack Morris is the $h!t… and so is the OGD

    • Wglisso1

Yes haha some of us got locked into a two year contract back in november of 2009!!! Just waiting on The Bionic , it will be here just in time for my upgrade!

    • Anonymous

Still have it, but it is on life support do to some unfortunate drops, including a few on slickrock this summer. The last two drops have scarred it with some dead, ugly pixels.

      • Anonymous

The Sean Connery Bond Droid is a freakin’ tank. My wife ended up breaking a Casio Boulder, but the OG has held up thus far (though she’s managed to somehow scratch the Gorilla Glass). Several drops and even a submergence. I should rename it Thunderball.

        • Anonymous

Yeah, I forgot, mine went for a swim in a rianstorm, too. It really has held up quite well considering how badly I have treated it. :)

    • JT

There are tons of OGs out there. Back in June, Droid was about 30% of all android phones.

    • Anonymous

I’ll abandon the OG Droid when Verizon gets a dual core, unlocked device from Moto, Sammy, or HTC.

Long live the Sean Connery Bond Droid!

yep i still got mine. stuck in my 2yr until next January

    • Stryker

Explain how someone in a 2 year contract can really have moved on from it (without paying full price for a different phone)

      • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

I’m on 2 year contract but somehow was eligible for upgrade after 1 year. I’m waiting for either Bionic or TBolt though. My OG is doing just fine, I don’t feel the need for intermediate upgrade to something like DX or Dinc.

  • Rick Lopez1

      yes it does

LoL. As dumb as it sounds that’s my favorite feature. LoL.

      • Anonymous

UD 3.0 was too buggy, so I went back to PE 4.2. The screen on and off animations are what I missed the most (even more than performance increases and battery life increases).
