Release: DarkEdge UI Theme by Xeudoxus

Since everyone feels like they were screwed over by the TAT Home preview, how would you feel about another custom UI for your Motorola Droid?  The DarkEdge UI from Xeudoxus and REALigion went public last night and so far looks incredible.

While the install of it was sort of a struggle, I managed to complete the entire process and I’m thinking it may have been worth the pain.  Well, except for the fact that Hootsuite is made completely useless by all of the black…Anyways, if you are up for an entire theme overhaul, DarkEdge is definitely worth the time and effort.

Full release info including download and installation instructions can be found at DroidForums.net.

Update: I’m going to do my best to put together some sort of video tutorial on this, but I’m telling you right now, it’ll be ugly.  It also might be an hour long hah.  Let me see what I can do in the next few days.

A couple of tips for you brave souls though…

  • Going from Bugless Beast to this was not successful.  My guess is a kernel issue.  I reverted back to JRummy and a standard voltage kernel and was able to get it to work.
  • Be patient.  Reboots seem to take forever, but usually will make it through.
  • Be really patient.  This took me a good hour and half because of the amount of steps it takes to completely finish this process.

Anyone else check this out?

Would love to hear thoughts, issues you ran into, or anything else so that those interested in checking this out can have a much smoother process than I had.

Just had the chance to install this theme…. So far I like it, its very fast with very smooth transitions. i had to change the wallpaper from the black one to another one that came with the theme( the one with the escalator leading into a mouth…SICK) If i had a camera i would do a vid to show how to set this up!!! Its not as hard as it looks.

How long did it take for your phone to reboot? Mine was going on for 15minutes and it still didn't load up.

Just installed a new kernel through rom manager, 1Gz instead of 600Mhz. Went fine, when you ope Rom Manager press menu and select settings then check advanced mode. Then go to download rom and go to Cyanogen and select P3Droid Kernels and select the one you want.

    • Steve-0

      Which ROM you runnin?

  • Brent

I took another try this afternoon after work and got it done, IF anyone is having troubles getting Fwt to work, I got Windows 7, RUN AS ADMIN. That's all it took :D.. Its a nice theme.. for some reason when kellex mentioned bein screwed bout TaThome. and the screenshot of all the “windows” open like Tat does, i thought that was how it looked. I was disappointed :( Oh well.. still a neat theme

  • cizzlen

Does not work with Ultimate Droid v10. Could not do Nandroid restore for the Quickstart it exited with satus 25…?

  • Rob

just want to know if the kernel this is based on has the wireless tethering?

    • aczm1988

Just set it up, it tethers just fine.

Are there any cool ROMs that DON'T require a data wipe?

    {{-_-}}

    • Tom

You could get regular themes… But you can come from CM and not data wipe

Do u have to b rooted for this?

    • Tom

Yes… Kellex did make sure to put the “Root (unlock)” label on this post.

  • droidroks

I'm not sure if someone asked this already, but will there be a version for other roms like BB1.0? Just curious. I might try another rom to put this theme on.

    • aczm1988

I had buggless beast on mine when i installed this theme.

  • http://twitter.com/vazguard Asher S.

This is a wonderful designed theme – I helped beta test and it was a great experience. That said after using it for a while I missed being able to read the screen outside. The thin, beautiful light lines on the black was almost impossible to make out in sunlight.

That said, if you want a classy theme that stands WAY out from the rest, check it out.

  • aczm1988
  • aczm1988

I had it done in about 30 mins or so, and i came from Bugless Beast 1.0

  • BostonB

I heard that they are working on putting this theme in Rom Manager so it might be smart to wait if the instructions scare you!

  • Brent

My try has failed , It never got past the M logo after installing themes.. I just wait for your video

  • gsxr750

How the hell do you install it over cyanogenmod?

    • nkhex19

Last I heard the Cyanogen version is still in beta so I know there is still a few bugs with it working on Cyanogen. Check out his forum on droidforums and I think it explains it all.

      • don

yea i did theres a zip but it says right here that kellex reverted back to jrummy and standard kernal and was able to do it.

        • Tom

I could not do it with JRummy, but I could do it with standard CM. It runs like a CHAMP. 800mhz is BLAZING FAST with Helix 1, it is quite insane. Who needs a DInc? Not me, this is plenty fast. My stock friend is jealous.

      • don

it is in beta version though but he reverted back to jrummy to it i think

  • realigion

Hey guys, I'm REALigion, the graphic designer on the project.
First off, I'd like to thank all of you for the great reviews.

Second, I'd like you all to know that we will be working on video tutorials, and Kellex you have my permission to do whatever tutorials you'd like for it. We're 100% for third-third-party (?) support, and sometimes it's the best kind!

For those of you that are REALLY intimidated, I recommend that you check out the Guide for installation that we have, as it has an alternative in it for users who just can't do it.

The instructions are very complex, but there isn't a workaround that we'd like to support (check out the guide to see the “workaround”). The theme has reached a level of complexity unachieved by any previous theme, thus all of the steps. It's theming third-party apps (why we need A2S) and it's working around MM's way of theming Framework (why we need FwT) and several very heavy-duty mods done by Xeudoxus.

    Thank you all again,
    REAL

    • Tom

I'm going to do this later, when I have time, but from the pics, I must give props to you. The design looks INSANE. I hope it works as good as it looks <3

  • http://twitter.com/jkroberts0 Jason Roberts

Oof…the process of applying this seem like an arduous process. Looks like I'm flashing back Cyanogen. Will have to crack at this after I charge my phone a little.

    • aczm1988

Its so worth it man i love the all black

  • kellex

By the way, I should point out that this uses a P3Droid kernel which comes stock at 600Mhz. I have yet to change it to anything more powerful and so far I don't think I'll need to. Amazing theme/ROM/UI/whatever this is. :)

    • aczm1988

Ya so far its fast as hell, im installing metamorph themes now, btw kellex what problems did you run into because once i had all the files ready i was up in running in about 30 mins not even.

  • aczm1988

Ok so i got it up and running and it looks great so far, applied it over top of Bugless Beast 1.0 and have had no issues at all yet. Heres my way i did it. (Have Yet to Apply everything yet just main them will update when done).

First go here and watch kellex's video to install sprecovery
    http://www.droid-life.com/2010/04/13/video-flas

Follow that video and then go here:
http://teamtmc.us/DarkEdge/DarkEdgeInstallGuide… ( Instructions on how to set it up)

Also all the files needed for this are here:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/43628

Will update when finished, by the looks of the page if u can read instructions you can do this theme. Easy as pie for me and no pro.

Also remember i came from Bugless Beast 1.0 i dont know if other roms besides the ones listed at the above page will work. As always make sure you got backups.

I also take no credit for any of this it goes to kellex & Xeudoxus & Realigion.

Let me know if it works.

    • aczm1988

Edit: I did a factory wipe/reset so most like the bugless beast was removed maybe thats why i was able to do it, not sure though but it did work.

    • aczm1988

Ok so im done and didnt get one error, everything is sweet so far and dont seem to have any lag, black everything lol. Definitely would reccoment to any1 who likes all black, its worth checking out.

  • Tom

I'm going to work on this when I have more time.

  • Rome

Theme does look sick. Avid would be nice but I am interested in the speed of the phone once this theme is loaded. I love trying out new kernels and roms. Going to be a challenge to get this to run. LOOKS AWSOME THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! I MUST HAVEEEEEEEE LOL

  • Paradisimo

Wow, that seems like an awful lot of work for a boring black theme. Am I missing something?

  • aczm1988

Gonna attempt this theme, will post feedback once completed (if completed)

  • Jordan

Does anyone know of a way I can get just a black notification bar? I don't want all of this black and I am not rooted. Thanks.

    • Erin

I'm pretty sure you have to root if you want a black notification bar

  • Jarred

Guys this theme is EPIC, there is NOTHING else like this, once you get it you won't be sorry. I can't wait for the pink.

  • foamman

I consider myself pretty tech savvy and adventurous but these directions make no sense. The first step/process has you nandroid restore the boot and system. First off, nandroid doesn't allow you to check off boot and system. You have to restore them individually. Secondly, it fails when restoring the system file. WTF…Three tries and they all failed.

  • Insomniac

Just finished installing this theme a little bit before reading this article. I have to say I really enjoy it. I went with the blue theme. It runs really smooth, and no FC's as of yet.

  • Marco

DROID survives spilled glass of white Zinfandel!
screen was off. I immediately wiped the phone glass dry of the wine with a paper towel, and made sure all other moisture was cleaned off the phone.
I took out the battery and slide open screen, exposing the keyboard.
I then placed the phone, battery, and backing in front of a fan overnight for it to dry completely prior to rebooting.
Next morning, placed the battery in the phone, and turned it on….IT LIVES!!!

Glad to see the phone isn't super delicate to liquids.
I gotta say, I was completey confident it would turn on.

  • http://twitter.com/droidcountry Chris

My biggest question is with regards to speed… Kellex, does this theme slow down the Droid at all? I'm getting used the speed of Bugless Beast, that's why I ask.

  • Adam

Seriously, want it so bad but those instructions are like greek to me.

    Makes me sad :(

  • dpu328

I don't use Hootsuite so I'm just taking a stab. does it have any custom or alternate themes that could be used with Dark edge?

    • kellex

DarkEdge is just a theme. It's not an actual ROM. They plan on having more themes with other colors as the highlight instead of gold.

      • jdon285

Wayyyyyy to much trouble to go through for a theme. It's nice and all but not THAT great.

      • dpu328

        Cool

  • Ace Z.

    This thing looks sick!!!

  • rals

Maybe a bit too dark just judging from the screen shots…especially out in the sun.

    • kellex

Just went outside, couldn't see a thing hah. But that's nothing new.

      • rals

LOL I was going to say that it's tough to see anything now in the sun, and make it all black now…you're going to have hellva a time to figure out what you're looking at. .

  • josh1980

    Hey Kellex,
    What gallery r u using?

    • kellex

      Oh the blog? Lightbox.

      • josh1980

Thanks for the reply. Awesome site.

  • nkhex19

This looks absolutely awesome!!! But I am with many people here who will await for a step by step video guide before I ever attempt to try this. I thought rooting instructions seemed intimidating, Lol.

  • Erin

This seems complicated. I won't be doing it unless they write an installation guide for dummies.

    • Mrpicolas

Its just manually putting together your theme just takes a little more time and s

  • dpu328

“OH THE MADNESS!” “WILL IT EVER STOP!?” Just when I think I am happy with a setup, something else comes along. “GRRR!!”

Woot! Your using the gallery I suggested to you :-)

    • kellex

      Yessir thank you. It's fantastic.

      • slackerjoe

What gallery app are you using? It's awesome!!

        • Ryan

I think this gallery is called Lightbox

          • http://twitter.com/standardsdt Dave Tarantula

            Yep, it's called Lightbox 2.

  • bchurch1006

How difficult is it to install this and other Custom UIs if you don't have the paid version of ROM Manager?

    • kellex

You do not do this through ROM Manager.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shane-Boddie/100000596311988 Shane Boddie

I really hope they give permission for you to post up a video of this. Maybe if we bombarded their email with request they'll let you….hmmm.

Show the support and importance of this site.

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

      Let's do it lol

    • kellex

You know, it appears that they have sort of changed their stance on support.

I'll see what I can do video-wise. This could be tough though heh.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shane-Boddie/100000596311988 Shane Boddie

You caught me just in time…lol. You can do it Kellex, we have faith in you.

      • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

Yea Kellex, we have the UTMOST faith!!! Do us all proud and take the title of torch bearer for Droid-Lifers everywhere! :-P
        Too corny? lol

      • Mrpicolas

Break the video into parts like in the directions then when done post

  • mortiz1978

    Kellex

Could you do a video on it???

  • stevers

can you do a video on how to install this one is tricky and i think it would help people alot

    • kellex

People did you read my post at all haha. They are asking for all support to go straight to their site for now meaning they would rather I not put out a video heh. I'll see what I can cook up though. This may be an hour and a half long tutorial.

  • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

WOW! That is OUTSTANDING! Thanks Kellex for the heads up! :-)

    • nkhex19

Lol, Yeah when I saw the instructions I was like ok nevermind, lol, I thought I was nervous about rooting my phone and those instructions were as simple as they got. If I was more comfortable using metamorph I probably would give it a shot but there is only a few things I've done with metamorph and I am still totally a noob at it.

      • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

Seriously. Metamorph? This stuff is getting complex! And then you need to purchase a few other apps from the market for that to even work. Yikes lol
It all just seems soo “3rd Party” to me.
BUT, if Kellex makes a video or the Devs realize that not everyone is a programmer and make a dummies guide, then I'll go for it :-)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shane-Boddie/100000596311988 Shane Boddie

          Same here.
